"Sluta! Du får inte vara med!" : En normkritisk essä om pedagogens inflytande på barns fria lek i förskolanDeiters, Jenny January 2017 (has links)
Title: "Stop! You can't play with me!" A norm-critical essay on how the teacher influences children's free play at preschool Abstract This essay is based on two cases describing two children in a few different situations at preschool. These cases form the basis of a dilemma, discussing how involved the teacher should be in children's free play. The dilemma poses questions regarding the teacher’s actions when a child does not want to play with other children, as well as a child that seems incapable of playing with other children. The cases help highlight the implicit idea that children should play with other children. My purpose is to investigate what implicit normative ideas exists about children playing at preschool and to what extent they form my own notion about the necessity for children to be able to play. The method used in this paper is a reflective essay. This enables it possible for me to reflect on my role as a teacher and how I act in the different cases. The reflective part of the essay focuses on answering posed questions, with the basis of discussion being the Swedish curriculum for preschool and its influences. Further, the essay discusses the origin of my own ideas about how children should play originate from. The focus then moves to a sociocultural perspective, specially how children learn and develop when they interact with each other. This section of the essay also discusses norms at preschool, developed from an interpretation of the curriculum, as well as existing ideas about children playing and children as competent learners. Finally, the essay also discusses current research on children and how they play, as well as current research on the importance of involved teachers, put in relation to the two children portrayed in the presented cases. My conclusion is that the teacher is subject to the curriculum, and needs to act according to its content. A significant part of the work is creating a safe environment for the children. The curriculum of the Swedish preschool, and the implicit theories that help shape it, act as a guide to the teacher’s actions. It states that children should explore the world around them; hence there are norms about how a child should play. Keywords: preschool, free play, social interaction, norms, involved teachers, curriculum

Exploring the Relationship between Mental Health and Substance Use, Stable Housing, and Completion of the RISE Court ProgramSmith, Paisley Elizabeth 12 1900 (has links)
This thesis analyzes participants of the RISE Court program, a specialized court in Tarrant County, Texas, focusing on women involved in prostitution. The study investigates the intricate relationship between mental health, stable housing, substance abuse, and successful completion of the court program. Through a comprehensive analysis of participant data, the findings reveal insights into the intersection of mental health and the outcomes of participants in the RISE Court program. Contrary to the initial hypotheses, this study presents compelling evidence that mental health issues do not significantly hinder participants from completing the court program nor acquiring stable housing during their participation. However, the data strongly supports the hypothesis that participants with mental health problems are more likely to engage in substance use during the program. Notably, the study found that a substantial portion (71%) of the sample had documented mental health diagnoses, highlighting the pervasive nature of mental health challenges within this demographic. This research represents a considerable stride towards comprehending the complexities surrounding the criminal justice system's interventions for individuals engaged in prostitution, shedding light on the role of mental health in shaping their experiences within the RISE Court program. The findings have implications for the development of more effective, holistic strategies for rehabilitation and reintegration within specialized courts targeting this vulnerable population.

The objective of this study is to understand how street-involved youth in Montreal experience their intimate relationships. Most studies focused on sexual health and HIV infection risks. However, little is known about the meanings they give to their intimate relationships and how they are influenced by the street life. In this study, the relationship between intimate experiences and street experiences of young street-involved people is explored.
Inspired by the sociology of experience (Dubet, 1994), this study focuses on the construction of the intimate experience of street-involved youth, assuming a dynamic relationship between their agency and the social and material conditions of the street life. This analytical framework allows us to overcome the empirical works which present these youth as passive victims of precarious living conditions or as careless and reckless when it comes to sexuality. Individual interviews were conducted with thirty-two street-involved youth (18 women and 14 men) aged from 18 to 27 years old (mean = 22 years old). The testimonies were analyzed within a qualitative typological framework (Schnapper, 2005), allowing the construction of ideal types of intimate experiences in the street life, the “figures of intimacy”.
Five figures of intimacy in the street life among young people were constructed based on the testimonies analysis: criminal success, withdrawal, survival, commitment and confinement. Each of these figures offers a unique dynamic description between intimate experiences and street experiences of the participants. The analysis shows some overlaps between the figures. Youth from the criminal success and the commitment figures build a sense of belonging to a peer group in the street situation, while youth from the withdrawal and survival figures perceived the street situation as disqualifying and try to stay away from other street-involved young people. Also, participants from the criminal success and survival figures reported a subjectivation of the intimate partner through emotional commitment. In contrast, youth in the withdrawal and the commitment figures showed a tendency to instrumentalize sexuality in order to satisfy various needs. This study illustrates the importance of understanding the dynamic between intimate relationships and the street life to capture the diversity and the complexity of the life experiences of the street-involved young people.

Previous issue date: 2008-07-30 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The objective of this work is to report the experience we had in Cuba in the prevention area concerning adolescents involved in transgressions, with proposals that could contribute to Brazil, highlighting intervention and prevention as social policies, prioritizing children and adolescents. The present work does not intend to analyze and compare both realities, but to look at the Cuban experience as a potential intervention model for services in Brazil. Despite facing such distinct scenarios, in both economical and political terms, Cuba s contribution to Brazil and he latter s contribution to the former can open new paths in the social intervention area. Out trip to Cuba in 2002, when we took part in prevention groups and learned about the country s socioeconomic panorama, rural settlements, and service models in the health and education sectors, was determinant so that we could combine our professional and academic experiences. After an initial contact with Cuba through Professor Caridad Navarrete Calderon, we established a permanent dialog on issues related to children and adolescents, making it possible for her to come to Brazil in 2003 for the First Interdisciplinary Seminar on Social Intervention Brazil and Cuba, attended by several researchers and practitioners of the childhood sector, in which we could reflect upon and learn about the aforementioned service models in both countries. Going deep into this universe is both painful and challenging; it is looking ahead in a constant search for alternatives and being willing to change. We do not intend hereby to look merely reflexively at potential interventions we can do, but to have a deep look which evidences that changing is necessary. As Che has defined it: The world must not only be interpreted, it must be transformed / Esta tese tem como objetivo relatar a experiência na área da prevenção em Cuba com os adolescentes envolvidos em ato infracional com propostas contribuitivas ao Brasil.

PRACTITIONERS' VIEWS ON SERVICE NEEDS FOR JUSTICE INVOLVED YOUTHLlamas, Juan C, Chandler, Robin L 01 June 2017 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to assess practitioners’ views of service needs for juveniles involved with the justice system. In the United States, every year there are thousands of youth committed to detention institutions for delinquent acts. As a result, children as young as nine years of age up until adulthood have a difficult time integrating back into the community. In many instances, youth who have been involved with the justice system have a greater likelihood of recidivism due to their inability to adapt to their environment. Further, when youth enter the system, many times they are not receiving the adequate services necessary to decrease recidivism and in turn are faced with multiple encounters with the justice system and with untreated concerns and additional needs.
This study used a qualitative design, conducting face to face interviews with ten justice involved youth practitioners. Participants were asked to explore areas such as, service utilization, recidivism rates, effectiveness of treatment, and barriers to service utilization. The results identified mental health and substance abuse treatment services as the most important needs of justice involved youth. Themes that emerged as important factors to the utilization of treatment services were meaningful relationships, parental support, and mentorship. This study found inadequacies with the process of assessing needs and services within the juvenile justice system. The results suggest a need for better treatment services and competent practitioners to reduce the likelihood of recidivism.

Towards Increased Strategy Involvement of Boards in SMEs : A qualitative study mapping obstacles and exploring solutions for boards' involvement in strategyJärbur, Martin, Nyström, Christopher January 2015 (has links)
Strategy involvement of boards in small and medium-sized businesses has not been given adequate focus in contemporary research. The main concern has been on exploring the phenomenon in large corporations, which means that the field remains fairly unexplored. The purpose of this study is two folded. Firstly we want to understand what obstacles boards of small and medium-sized businesses face for strategy involvement. Secondly we want to generate new insights and knowledge about how these obstacles can be tackled. In order to accomplish these goals we assume the following two research questions: Research Question 1: Are there any obstacles in the way for strategy involvement of boards in small and medium-sized businesses? Research Question 2: What solutions are there to overcome these obstacles for strategy involvement of boards in small and medium-sized businesses? The first question aims to explore and map potential obstacles for strategy involvement, whereas the second question addresses potential solutions. By utilizing a qualitative approach and interviews we want to better understand the context. Our goal of using this method was to reveal motives and opinions to get a better understanding of how small and medium-sized businesses deal with strategy issues. The participants held various positions within small and medium-sized businesses in Sweden. CEOs, directors and busy directors participated in semi-structured interviews. This study is based upon two frameworks. Firstly we constructed an obstacle framework consisting of five obstacles derived from existing literature. Secondly we made a solution framework, which includes potential solutions connected to the obstacles, also derived from contemporary research. These two frameworks were then used to see what opinions our participants held about them. The data were analyzed by performing a thematic analysis. The idea of using this technique was to identify themes participants held in common. We found some patterns among the respondents which led us to revise both of the frameworks. The main finding of this study is that the presence of a board role conflict seems to be very limited in the context of small and medium-sized businesses. We furthermore found that there are differences in how to solve obstacles in regards to firm size. Two of the suggested solution in existing literature was found to be irrelevant for small and medium-sized businesses. Namely that it is not necessary to get CEOs to embrace strategy involvement, and stopping CEOs from handing over deceiving information is not solved by changing incentives. We also found patterns of two new solutions which were added in the revised solution framework. The first solution involves having regular strategy sessions and meetings. The second solution suggests that it can be advantageous to replace directors uncommitted to strategizing.

Good practice framework for virtual learning environment in higher educationBin Fryan, Latefa January 2015 (has links)
Many higher education institutions (HEIs) around the world are investing in the implementation of different Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs) to support the teaching and learning process. However, there is a lack of detailed guidelines or a practical framework for the VLE system implementation without which an effective VLE system implementation framework, many of the full potential of VLE system cannot be realised objectives and benefits remain underachieved. A small number of frameworks specific for VLE system implementation are reported in the literature; however, these are not comprehensive in terms of covering the entire end-to-end implementation, do not consider all the key elements of a VLE system implementation and are far from integrated. Moreover, a practice-based framework that considers various organisational, pedagogical, and technological aspects and covers the entire end-to-end implementation, is not available in the current literature, and there is no complete set of guidelines to be used by HEIs to support and manage an effective VLE system implementation. Therefore, further research is needed for investigating various key elements and for identifying aspects of a good-practice framework for the implementation of VLE systems in HEIs. Particularly, an integrated good-practice framework that is comprehensive and integrates elements from existing literature and current practices or case studies would be a significant and useful contribution to this field, which highlights the importance of this study. Hence, research into investigating a good-practice VLE system implementation framework is important, and this thesis builds and presents a good-practice-in-context framework for the implementation and use of VLE systems in HEIs. This is done through identifying and exploring the key elements that build-up such a comprehensive practice-based framework for VLE system implementation through literature and good practices by considering various pedagogical, technical, and organisational aspects. These key elements include stages, processes, critical success factors (CSFs) considered, challenges (CLG) faced, associated risks, stakeholders (SHs) involved, and various tools, technologies, and methods, integrated with the VLE system. The key elements provide a deeper understanding of the fundamental issues and success factors underlying the successful implementation and sustainability of a VLE system. Initially, a conceptual framework was developed encapsulating various key elements of a VLE system implementation framework based on an extensive literature review and an analysis of existing frameworks and models, encapsulating various key elements of a VLE system implementation framework, where the elements were integrated and mapped with each other highlighting and depicting interrelations and interactions among them. The conceptual framework was validated by empirical data from the two case studies (of HEIs, at local and national level) to propose a refined, novel, and practice-based framework for VLE system implementation in HEIs, which also contains mappings to Technology Enhance Learning (TEL) strategy components. Thus, the proposed good-practice-in-context framework can be used as a tool to assist or guide HEIs to implement VLE system successfully. Finally, the proposed framework could lead to a successful VLE system implementation and it could also serve as an effective approach that not only facilitates enhancement in the learning and teaching experience, but also fosters end-user engagement and supports flexibility and customization according to the end-user needs of HEIs.
