______________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / The advent of Second World War brought relevant changes in the global art scene. For understanding the literature produced during this period, it is necessary to study the Counterculture, a movement that opposes to the dominant culture, which serves the Culture Industry as an important vehicle for the propagation and maintenance of the conservative and elitist establishment. Although the Counterculture is supported by a minority, it is fundamental to the understanding of contemporary literature because its posterior popularity contributed to the formation of the dominant culture of the twenty-first century: the postmodernity. This study compares two countercultural literatures: an American in the 1950s, known as the Beat Generation, and another, Brazilian, in the 1970s, called geração mimeógrafo. It is said that the Brazilian counterculture literature is an epigone to the U.S. To prove this assertion, this research uses the Theory Polysystem allied to a semiotic analysis of the poetry of Jack Kerouac, in the case of the Beat Generation, and the poetry of Nicolas Behr, of the geração mimeógrafo.

Moro, Carlo Frederico January 2010 (has links)
In the present work, the insecticide recombinant peptide Jaburetox-2Ec, derived from Canavalia ensiformis (Jack bean) urease, was studied, primarily by light and X-ray scattering techniques. Its tendency to aggregate in aqueous solution under different physical-chemical conditions, and its interaction with human platelet mimetic liposome membranes were analyzed. From the data relative to hydrodynamic radii, radii of gyration and mean molecular weight obtained from the peptide in aqueous solution, it was possible to observe a tendency for greater aggregation around pH 5.5, as well as an absence of aggregation at values of pH below 4.0 and above 7.0. No visible effect on the level of aggregation was verified with the addition of reducing agent or ions, whereas the exposure to oxygen in the air resulted in an increase in this level. The studies of Jaburetox-2Ec interaction with liposomes revealed a significant structural change in the membrane, which was shown to be more intense in higher peptide concentrations. Software-assisted theoretical fits were made for the experimental small-angle X-ray scattering curves aiming to quantify the changes in the physical parameters of the membranes caused by peptide action. The formation of pores in the membrane was proposed as an explanation to the results found.

Effect of Eurycoma longifolia (Tongkat Ali) on the prostate cancer cell line LNCaP

Abouhamraa, Hamza January 2013 (has links)
Magister Scientiae (Medical Bioscience) - MSc(MBS) / Eurycoma Longfolia Jack, also known as Tongkat Ali (TA) is a tropical plant belonging to the family of Simaroubaceae is widely distributed in South East Asian countries. The extracts of TA have been proven to have cytotoxicity, anti-proliferative and aphrodisiac properties. In vitro assays revealed cytotoxicity toward human breast cancer cell lines MCF-7, KB, CaOV-3, RD, DU-145and HepG2 human liver cancer cells and appear promising as a new chemotherapeutic agent against human cervical carcinoma (HeLa) cells. Although, there are extensive studies reported on its cytotoxicity benefits there are none pertaining to LNCaP human prostate cell line. Therefore, this study aimed at testing the effects of TA on LNCaP cells and prostate specific antigen (PSA) production. Materials and Methods This study investigated the effect of different concentrations of TA (0.0025, 0.025, 2.5, 25 and 250 g/ml) TA on LNCaP human prostate cancer cell line for 24 and 96 hours. The following parameters were investigated: morphology, cell viability (MTT), testosterone modulation, Annexin V-CY3 binding (Apoptosis), DNA fragmentation (TUNEL), caspase 3/7 activity (apoptosis), and PSA production. Results When observing the morphological changes of LNCaP cells exposed to TA, a clear increase in detachment and cell death via apoptosis as the concentrations of TA increased. The viability decreased significantly in both 24 and 96 hour treatment of TA at higher dosages (25 and 250 g/ml). The significant inhibitory effects on testosterone stimulated cell proliferation were seen at TA concentrations as low as 0.0025 μg/ml TA. At higher concentrations of TA (25 and 250 μg/ml), for all testosterone dosages a decreasing trend in proliferation was found. vii Testosterone concentrations of 10 nM showed maximum stimulation of cell proliferation for TA dosages up to 2.5 μg/ml. All concentrations of TA showed significant increase in apoptosis of the cells as dosages increased. A higher amount of DNA damage found at the highest dosage (250 μg/ml) of TA. The relative caspase 3/7 activation showed significant (P=0.0043) activation at the highest concentration (250 μg/ml) of TA. Relative PSA production resulted only a 5% increase with no significant difference at all doses indicting that TA does not change the cell PSA production and the decline in PSA concentration is due to LNCaP cells dying as a result of this exposure to TA. Conclusion In summary, the major finding of this study is that Tongkat Ali inhibits the viability of prostate cancer cell lines (LNCaP) through caspase-mediated pathway, as well as increased the level of apoptotic such as DNA fragmentation. In addition, Tongkat Alin also inhibited PSA production. In LNCaP cells, testosterone with the addition of TA does not increase the growth of the cells. However, more in-vitro and in-vivo studies are needed to establish the exact constituents of the extracts and their mechanism of action. Thus, this study opens perspectives on the use of Tongkat Ali preparations in the treatment of aging male symptoms, prostate cancer prevention or as additional treatment to standard prostate cancer therapy.

Eddy-covariance carbon balance, photosynthetic capacity and vegetation indices in a harvested boreal jack pine stand

Hawthorne, Iain 05 1900 (has links)
Eddy-covariance (EC) CO₂ flux data were analysed and annual carbon (C) balances estimated for a four-year period (2004-2007) following clearcut harvesting of a boreal jack pine stand in northern Saskatchewan. The site was a source of C to the atmosphere for all years, with annual net ecosystem productivity (NEP) increasing from -153 g C m⁻² yr⁻¹ in 2004 to -63 g C m⁻² yr⁻¹ in 2007. This increase was mainly due to gross primary productivity (GPP) increasing significantly from 78 to 200 g C m⁻² yr⁻¹ , while ecosystem respiration (R) increased only slightly from 231 to 263 g C m⁻² yr⁻¹ over the same period. In the 2006 growing season (GS), a field campaign was conducted to investigate the relationships between monthly destructive measurements of leaf area index (LAI) and daily measurements of the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and photosynthetic capacity (Amax). The latter was derived from 5-day, 16-day, 30-day and annual Michaelis-Menten light response analyses using daytime measurements of NEP and incident photosynthetically active radiation. Digital-camera data were used to evaluate the potential of using the rectilinear-lens vegetation index (RLVI) as a surrogate for NDVI of a young forest stand. Results showed that LAI was linearly related to NDVI and RLVI, which was largely the result of changes in the deciduous vegetation component across the GS. These results indicate that RLVI could be used as a surrogate for NDVI up to a GS maximum LAI of 0.91 m2 m⁻² observed in 2006. Measured mean (± 1 S.D.) GS LAI was 0.67 (± 0.24) m² m⁻² in 2006. LAI accounted for the majority of the variability in Amax at the 30-day time scale, while at shorter time scales air temperature was the dominant control. For 2004 to 2007, mean spring estimates of LAI were 0.25, 0.29, 0.38 (compared to 0.40 m² m⁻² from measurements) and 0.41 m² m⁻², respectively. Results suggest that a steady increase in the jack pine LAI component accounted for the annual increases in GPP and hence NEP over the four years. / Land and Food Systems, Faculty of / Graduate

Implementation and quantitative analysis of a real-time sound architecture

Voigt, Michael 06 April 2009 (has links)
Several available free software audio solutions were analyzed, and Jackdmp—a C++ reimplementation of the renowned JACK Audio Connection Kit—was selected as the most appropriate solution for a real-time audio architecture on DROPS. The JACK sound architecture provides the lowest processing latency possible on a desktop computer for a given set of sound card parameters. It reduces the latency jitter caused by software to zero and synchronizes streams at sample accuracy. A real-time admission scheme for JACK clients is proposed. The execution time of different typical JACK clients was analyzed with measurements to validate the assumptions the proposal is based on, but also to gain further knowledge about their timing behavior. The measurements showed that the condition set by Paul Davis—the time to process a client must be a linear function of the buffer size—holds for all tested clients. Jackdmp was ported to DROPS. The developed design of the port and its implementation is documented here. Measurements showed that—although the real-time performance of the Linux kernel is continuously being improved in the mainline and on special external branches—DROPS can provide a signaling latency that is two times lower on average than the values that can be achieved on the same machine running with a low latency patched Linux kernel. Thus, it can be stated that DROPS is well-suited for real-time audio processing and that the pursued path to use it as the foundation of a truly real-time capable audio workstation should be followed.

Hermansson, Johnny January 2009 (has links)
Ulf Lundell is one of the most famous songwriters and authors in Sweden. He has written fifteen works of fiction and they’ve all same theme – a lonely man trying to look into his own past life. They are all built on a character, writing from an I-perspective, having a bit of Lundells own biography in there’s personality.  The aim of his thesis is to find out how Ulf Lundell presents him self in his fictive characters, and will trace the authors development from a psychological point of view. The theoretic starting points are Lacans Freudian concepts “idealego”, “egoideal” and “the superego”, describing the psychological alteration at the author.                    The examination contains an analysis of Lundells novels Jack, En varg söker sin flock and Värmen, and throws light on the relationship between the author and his characters, and how it developes and changes with Lundells literary development. In this consideration are narrative theories a basic factor.   This work will also try to illustrate what has inspired Lundell in creating his fiction figures, and finally how he creates his own lived life on these literary characters.
