The choice of such a work as corpus is justified by the fact of having acquired great importance to the national literature and be considered a benchmark when it comes to the War of Canudos. The work of Os Sertões, not only gained importance in the field of literature, but also in other areas of knowledge such as history, sociology and anthropology, and is therefore considered a work difficult to classify. This is due to the fact Os Sertões, fiction, having as its theme an episode of national history, bringing the storyline production conditions of the time (the War of Canudos, consolidation of the Republic, the discourse of science deterministic in vogue in Brazil), as well as the hegemonic ideology of the XIX century. In this sense, we are interested by how Euclides da Cunha presents the character Antônio Conselheiro, considering that the discourses related to character, not only show the subject position of Cunha, but the discursive formation of the time, in regard to the episode Canudos and its leader. By means of the choice of some discursive sequences, we intend to present the way the author builds his character, presenting it and assigning it senses concerning madness, mystery, religious fanaticism and violence. Given that the focus of this research centers around the figure of the Conselheiro and, being inspired by a character in real life, to analyze the conditions of production of the work, seek other discourses, produced at the time of the War of Canudos, that could have collaborated in the production of meanings about the Conselheiro in the plot of the work, as, for example, the journalistic discourse wartime, the discourse of science deterministic in vogue in Brazil in the late XIX century, and early XX century and, finally, the political discourse, with a view to consolidating the republican regime installed in Brazil in 1889. In this study, Antônio Conselheiro will be treated as fictional character, built by Euclides da Cunha through verbal resources, in others words, although the Conselheiro of Os Sertões is inspired by the real-life Conselheiro, during the research it will be seen as a fictitious. The proposed analyzes are mediated in accordance with studies Michel Pêcheux (2009 [1988]), Orlandi (2007 till [1999], 2007b [1992]) and Mariani (1998) the main authors give theoretical support to the discussions. Analyze the effects of meaning produced around the work Conselheiro in Os Sertões is, generally, a glance at the processes of signification and it is direct link with the ideology in that way that imposes a given situation are the result the interplay of forces between discursive formations in dispute. / Pautado na Análise de Discurso de linha francesa (AD), o presente trabalho tem como objetivo analisar os efeitos de sentidos produzidos pela obra Os Sertões, de Euclides da Cunha, com relação à personagem Antônio Conselheiro, sendo a obra em questão o corpus desta pesquisa. A escolha de tal obra como corpus se justifica pelo fato de ter adquirido grande importância para a literatura nacional e por ser considerada uma referência quando o assunto é a Guerra de Canudos. A obra Os Sertões não adquiriu importância somente na área da Literatura, mas também em outras áreas do conhecimento como História, Sociologia e Antropologia, sendo, portanto, considerada uma obra de entremeio. Isso se deve ao fato de Os Sertões, obra de ficção, por ter como tema um episódio da história nacional, trazer no enredo as condições de produção da época (a Guerra de Canudos, a consolidação da República, o discurso da ciência determinista em voga no Brasil), como também a ideologia hegemônica do final do século XIX. Neste sentido, nos interessamos pela forma como Euclides da Cunha apresenta a personagem Antônio Conselheiro, tendo em vista que os discursos relacionados a personagem não evidenciam somente a posição-sujeito de Cunha, mas a formação discursiva hegemônica da época, no que dizia respeito ao episódio de Canudos e seu líder. Por meio da escolha de algumas sequências discursivas, pretendemos apresentar a maneira como o autor constrói sua personagem, apresentando-a e atribuindo a ela sentidos relativos à loucura, mistério, fanatismo religioso e violência. Tendo em vista que o foco desta pesquisa se concentra em torno da figura do Conselheiro e sendo ele uma personagem inspirada na vida real, ao analisar as condições de produção da obra, buscamos outros discursos, produzidos na época da Guerra de Canudos, que poderiam ter colaborado na produção de sentidos sobre o Conselheiro no enredo da obra, como, por exemplo, o discurso jornalístico da época da guerra, o discurso da ciência determinista em voga no Brasil no final do século XIX e início do século XX e, por fim, o discurso político, tendo em vista a consolidação do regime republicano instalado no Brasil no ano de 1889. Neste estudo, Antônio Conselheiro será tratado enquanto personagem de ficção, construído por Euclides da Cunha por meio de recursos verbais, ou seja, embora o Conselheiro de Os Sertões seja inspirado no Conselheiro da vida real, no decorrer da pesquisa, ele será encarado como um ser fictício. As análises propostas serão mediadas de acordo com os estudos de Michel Pêcheux (2009 [1988]), Orlandi (2007a [1999], 2007b [1992]) e Mariani (1998), principais autores que darão suporte teórico às discussões realizadas. Analisar os efeitos de sentido produzidos em torno do Conselheiro na obra Os Sertões é, de modo geral, lançar um olhar para os processos de significação e sua ligação direta com a ideologia na medida em que os sentidos que se impõem numa dada conjuntura são o resultado do jogo de forças entre formações discursivas em disputa.
