For the term of its national life : the Australian (imagi)nation.

Holliday, Brian January 1993 (has links)
This thesis is divided into two sections; a theoretical section which looks at the analytic construction of collective identities, and a section which applies the theory to two Australian novels. The first four chapters use the theories of Roy Wagner, Benedict Anderson, Jacques Lacan and Homi Bhabha to look at the often unconscious construction of culture and national, and at the process of hybridity to which those constructions are continually subject. The next three chapters examine Glenda Adamss Games of the Strong and Nicholas Haslucks The Bellarmine Jug showing how an unconscious development of Australian themes runs through the novels, regardless of a lack of Australian characters and setting. The novels show the complex, unique and frequently misunderstood position Australia holds between the cultures, nations and civilisations of the East and the West. The conclusion draws together the principal arguments of the thesis and highlights some concerns which they imply for Australian and its national imagination.

A tent of blue and souls in pain : creative responses to prison experience with emphasis upon existential and autobiographical elements within selected South African prison writings

Folli, Rosemary Anne 18 February 2014 (has links)
M.A. (English) / This dissertation aims to examine the nature of the unique creative response to the prison experience. Different modes of artistic expression will be analyzed to show that there is no single literary response to incarceration, and to demonstrate the truth of Oscar Wilde's assertion that "technique is really personality".' To this end, autobiographical and existential elements inherent in selected prison writings will be the main focus of this study, since the concern of both the autobiographer and the existential philosopher is with the dynamic, emergent personality. The totalizing prison situation is totalitarian in essence, since this kind of prison regime assumes responsibility for all aspects of the imprisoned human being, its aim being to annihilate the individual self. In the face of this threat, a human being often feels the need to assert his humanity and selfhood. The creative response can provide a means of reinstating the self. The autobiographer, who concentrates upon the 'becoming' self, must needs be a philosopher, existential in essence, in the search for the 'autos', the self, in relation to the 'bios', one's life. This is realized through 'graphe', language, which enables the writer to probe his/her depths and order his/her disparate experiences into some kind of balance, merging past and present. The fragmented world of the prisoner particularly lends itself to creative expression as the writer attempts to impose some order upon his/her broken life.

Etude théorique des mécanismes mis en jeu lors de la formation de monocouches auto-assemblées de molécules éléctroactives sur la surface de l'or Au(111) / Theoretical study of the mechanisms involved in the formation of self-assembled monolayers of electroactive molecules on the surface of Au (111)

Lassoued, Karima 21 September 2017 (has links)
In order to develop materials and devices with new properties, the development of self- In order to develop materials and devices with new properties, the development of self-assembled monolayers (SAM) is a topic of growing interest in the field of nanoscience. SAM are two-dimensional aggregates formed by molecules regularly spaced on a surface and bonded together by non-covalent forces. The field of electrochemical biosensors for DNA strand recognition is among the most recent applications of SAM. In this context, we conducted a theoretical study of the fundamental mechanisms involved in the adsorption of the quinone Jug-C4-thiol molecule on the Au (111) surface. The results were compared to the accessible experimental measurements from the "nano 2D" team at the ITODYS laboratory (Paris 7 University). First, the density functional theory at PBE and PBE-D2 levels was used to study the mechanisms involved (physisorption or chemisorption) during the adsorption of the isolated molecule on the surface of Au (111) and access to the most favorable site for each mechanism. The nature of the binding between the molecule and the surface was finely analyzed using density of states (DOS) calculations and differences in charge densities. Then, the assembly of the quinone Jug-C4-thiol molecule on the Au (111) surface was studied. This assembly of molecules was initiated by the formation of dimer configurations through the formation of intermolecular bonds (hydrogen bonding and π-stacking, etc.). The infrared spectra of the most stable configurations were simulated and compared with the experiment. And finally, the mechanism of exchange between "host" molecules (C12H25SH alkanethiols previously assembled on the surface) and "invited" molecules (Jug-C4-thiols) was explored with the theoretical tools. The analysis of the results revealed important structural and energetic informations on the formation of the mixed molecular monolayer.

Ölandskrukor : Romersk vardag - lyx på Gotland? / Ölandpots : Roman everyday items become luxury in Gotland?

Dalsbro, Åsa January 2017 (has links)
Two ceramic vessels of the Öland and Gotland type were in the summer of 2016 discovered at an archaeological excavation at the island of Gotland in the Baltic sea. They were produced with two different techniques of firing, resulting in two different colors of the surface of the pot. Ceramic vessels of the Öland and Gotland type dating from the Roman Iron Age are supposed to have been produced at these islands, but thin-section analysis of pottery found in Mälardalen in the mainland of Sweden show that at least some vessels are made of clay from Mälardalen. The type is distinct and differs both in form and composition of the clay from other ceramic vessels of more ordinary character. This type of ceramic vessel is supposed to be inspired of bronze vessels from the Roman Empire and ceramic vessels from both the Roman Empire and the Celtic area. In this thesis, the aim is to shed some light on the characters of this type of vessel with comparative and empirical studies of pots from Öland and Gotland. This is done by comparing vessels and described graves on the two islands. And for references a few pots from mainland Sweden is also studied. Is it possible to understand why the high-status pottery on Öland and Gotland differ from the rest of the Swedish mainland? Clearly, the wealth of the population on the islands was over average if we measure it in objects of foreign origin, compared with the Swedish mainland. Objects from the Roman Empire such as drinking equipment made of bronze and gold and silver coins made its way to the islands in bigger quantities than to rest of Scandinavia with exceptions from some local areas on the Swedish mainland. Ölandskrukorna introduceras i Mälardalsregionen under äldre romersk järnålder, men företrädesvis i elitmiljöer.
