It was part of my identity, without it I didn't know who I was” : A qualitative study about how support efforts, labeling and stigma affected former criminal men’s identity formation

Ajob, Hilda, Ashaneh, Lilian January 2023 (has links)
Over a short period of time, crime in Sweden has increased and become a serious and publicized social problem. It is a complex process to leave a criminal environment that can often involve a number of different challenges. Cohesion and social ties formed in criminal environments can delay the process of leaving due to a strong identification with the group. Support and efforts by society are important for an individual to be able to change his identity as a criminal. The purpose of this qualitative study was to investigate subjective experiences of how stigmatization, labeling processes and support efforts affected the exit process in the development to a non-criminal identity. The starting point for studies was a social psychological approach that was studied through theories of social identity, stigmatization, labeling and exit process. Ten respondents from the dropout activity Criminal Revenge in Society (KRIS) participated in studies and interviews using semi-structured interviews. The results showed that KRIS's support efforts have a positive impact on the development of a non-criminal identity by contributing to a feeling of support and acceptance. The respondents who had not made a geographical separation experienced labeling and stigma in a larger sense. Stamping processes and stigmatization were found to have a negative impact on the development to a non-criminal identity in the exit process. The membership of KRIS has functioned as a protected environment from labeling and stigmatization that facilitates identity formation in the exit process.

The Political Economy of Retailing Sustainable Food: Green Consumerism and Sustainability

Toofan, Megan H. 12 1900 (has links)
In recent decades, the global impacts of unsustainable consumption and production patterns have become a leading topic of sustainability, and more recently, climate action discourse. At the policy level, green consumerism – an element of green capitalism – has been positioned as the pathway to more sustainable consumption and production (SCP) practices. Within this model, eco-labeling schemes are used to communicate various sustainability attributes, or conditions of production, to the consumer. This study set out to investigate whether SCP is achievable through green consumerism using a two-part case study that centers around the egg industry and specific hen welfare standards. The case study examines the effectiveness of egg eco-labeling schemes and related statements and images placed on egg packaging in informing consumers' purchasing decisions. It also examines the impacts of green consumerism on organic egg production in the presence of strong consumer demand for enhanced hen welfare standards. The results of the case study demonstrate that in the egg industry, green consumerism is not highly effective because consumers' purchasing decisions are often informed by vague and misleading information about conditions of production. Moreover, the presence of strong consumer demand has not resulted in enhanced hen welfare standards in organic production. In interpreting these findings through the lens of David Harvey's theory of the spatial fix, I argue that the true role of green consumerism is to facilitate a spatial fix to resolve the chronic crisis of overaccumulation in the conventional egg industry. Furthermore, that the limitations and contradictions within green consumerism (e.g. vague or insignificant eco-label claims) aid in removing the barrier of capital fixity so that the spatial fix can occur.

Konsekvenser av individens belastningsregister : En studie om brottsdömdas återintegrering i arbetslivet / Consequences of the individual's criminal record : A study on the reintegration of convicted criminals into the workforce

Abdo, Manal, Abdul Rahman, Nadin January 2023 (has links)
Introduction: The study provides a comprehensive overview of how it has become increasingly common in today's job market for employers to request criminal record checks during the hiring process. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine how the criminal record affects the employment prospects of individuals with a criminal background and to analyze the methods identified as effective in supporting individuals who have been denied employment due to their criminal record. Method: To address the study's objectives, a qualitative research approach was chosen, involving content analysis and document analysis. Results: Individuals with a criminal record face greater challenges in reintegrating into the labor market due to the stigmatization and labeling associated with having a criminal record. The results showed that individuals with a criminal record experience social exclusion, discrimination, and stigmatization. Furthermore, the findings indicate that these individuals are indirectly punished even after serving their sentence, as they face limitations in their opportunities for labor market reintegration. Society views them as deviant, further hindering the reintegration of individuals with previous criminal convictions and increasing the likelihood of recidivism. Therefore, it is important to implement strategies and interventions that focus on the rehabilitation and reintegration of individuals with criminal backgrounds into the labor market.

Analyse des Interaktoms des Mediatorkomplexes und seiner posttranslationalen Modifikationen in \(Saccharomyces\) \(Cerevisae\) mittels Massenspektrometrie / Proteomic Analysis of the Mediator Complex Interactome and it´s posttranslational Modifications in \(Saccharomyces\) \(Cerevisae\)

Uthe, Henriette January 2018 (has links) (PDF)
Eukaryotic messenger RNA (mRNA) synthesis catalyzed by the RNA Polymerase II is the central and critical process for the regulation of gene expression. Several decades of research unearthed many details about this essential process of high complexity and dynamic. The mediator complex turned out to be crucial for the regulation of Pol II mediated transcription, especially the process of initiation. It functions as an interface between the general transcription machinery and multiple DNA binding transcriptional regulators. Binding these regulators via its tail module and binding the polymerase II via its head module, the mediator forms a bridge between upstream activating sequences and the core promotor and initiates the assembling of the Pre-Initiation complex consisting of the polymerase II and the general transcription factors. However, particularly the last years of research suggest the mediator complex within many other functions including transcription elongation, gene looping and chromatin remodeling. Considering the facts, that the mediator (a) consist of 25 subunits, which are partially flexible associated, (b) shows a flexible intrinsic structure and (c) is highly and dynamically phosphorylated it becomes easy to imagineplausible that the mediator complex meets all this functions, by serving as a transcriptional platform. In context of this thesis, and it was possible to “illustrate” the mediator within its versatile tasks and functions by presenting the most comprehensive analysis of the Mediator complex interactome to date. By optimizing the conditions of cell lysis and co-immunoprecipitation it was possible to preserve even transient and labile protein-protein interactions. The use of metabolic labeling (15N) in the control experiment, allowed us to distinguish between specific and non-specific captured proteins. In combination with high performance mass spectrometry, more than 400 proteins and even complete protein complexes interacting with the mediator complex could be identified, naming RNA-Polymerase II, all general transcription factors the SAGA complex, chromatin remodeling complexes and highly acetylated histones. Furthermore, many candidates where identified playing a role in co-transcriptional processes of mRNA, such as splicing, mRNA-decapping, mRNA transport and decay. This analysis not only confirmed several interactions , already can be found in the literature, but furthermore provide clear evidence, that mediator complex interacts not only with the RNA-Polymerase II, but also with the RNA Polymerase I and III. Next to the high numbers of potential known and unknown interacting proteins, it could be shown, that the interactome is highly dynamic and sensitive to detergent.

A Deep Neural Network-Based Model for Named Entity Recognition for Hindi Language

Sharma, Richa, Morwal, Sudha, Agarwal, Basant, Chandra, Ramesh, Khan, Mohammad S. 01 October 2020 (has links)
The aim of this work is to develop efficient named entity recognition from the given text that in turn improves the performance of the systems that use natural language processing (NLP). The performance of IoT-based devices such as Alexa and Cortana significantly depends upon an efficient NLP model. To increase the capability of the smart IoT devices in comprehending the natural language, named entity recognition (NER) tools play an important role in these devices. In general, the NER is a two-step process that initially the proper nouns are identified from text and then classify them into predefined categories of entities such as person, location, measure, organization and time. NER is often performed as a subtask while processing natural languages which increases the accuracy level of a NLP task. In this paper, we propose deep neural network architecture for named entity recognition for the resource-scarce language Hindi, based on convolutional neural network (CNN), bidirectional long short-term memory (Bi-LSTM) neural network and conditional random field (CRF). In the proposed approach, initially, we use skip-gram word2vec model and GloVe model to represent words in semantic vectors which are further used in different deep neural network-based architectures. In the proposed approach, we use character- and word-level embedding to represent the text that includes information at fine-grained level. Due to the use of character-level embeddings, the proposed model is robust for the out-of-vocabulary words. Experimental results show that the combination of Bi-LSTM, CNN and CRF algorithms performs better as compared to the other baseline methods such as recurrent neural network, long short-term memory and Bi-LSTM individually.

The Formation of "Outsider" Through Labeling and Sentence Lengths for Immigrants of Hispanic Descent.

Smith, Jeremy Jason 19 August 2009 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of this study was to determine if individuals who supported denying citizenship to children of foreign parentage and making English the sole language spoken in the United States held the opinion that a sentence length over 15 years was appropriate for non-U.S. individuals. Other purposes were to determine if individuals with high religiosity or who carried a lethal weapon also held the opinion that a sentence length over 15 years was appropriate for non-U.S. individuals. Pearson's Chi-Square was used to determine if a significant relationship existed between the independent variables and the dependent variable. The data indicated that a significant relationship existed between the length of the sentence imposed on non-U.S. individuals by those individuals who supported denying citizenship to children of foreign parentage, who want to make English the sole spoken language, individuals with high religiosity, and individuals who carried a lethal weapon.
