Miniature gas sensing device based on near-infrared spectroscopy

Alfeeli, Bassam 06 December 2005 (has links)
The identification and quantification of atoms, molecules, or ions concentrations in gaseous samples are in great demand for medical, environmental, industrial, law enforcement and national security applications. These applications require in situ, high-resolution, non-destructive, sensitive, miniature, inexpensive, rapid detection, remotely accessed, real time and continuously operating chemical sensing devices. The aim of this work is to design a miniature optical sensing device that is capable of detecting and measuring chemical species, compatible with being integrated into a large variety of monitoring systems, and durable enough to be used under extreme conditions. The miniature optical sensor has been realized by employing technologies from the optical communication industry and spectroscopic methods and techniques. Fused silica capillary tubing along with standard communication optical fibers have been utilized to make miniature gas sensor based on near-infrared spectroscopy for acetylene gas detection. In this work, the basic principles of infrared spectroscopy are reviewed. Also, the principle of operation, fabrication, testing, and analysis of the proposed sensor are discussed in details. / Master of Science

Systems engineering processes for a student-based design laboratory

Garner, Michael Dax 24 August 2010 (has links)
A student-based university environment for engineering design and development is much different from a product development environment within the aerospace industry. Therefore, a different approach to systems engineering should be considered. By its very nature, a university product development laboratory thrives on creativity and rejects bureaucracy. Experience shows that continuity and discipline within a project is crucial for success. The practice of systems engineering enables technical project discipline. Systems engineering is the art and science of developing an operable system that meets requirements within imposed constraints. The purpose of this thesis is to describe the systems engineering processes and techniques necessary for a student-based project, and explicitly show how to implement these processes. Although attempts have been made to utilize a few systems engineering techniques in past projects, many students did not properly and consistently apply those techniques to the technical design work. The goal of the thesis is to tailor the NASA systems engineering processes to a student-based design laboratory environment and to apply the methodologies to the mission design of Paradox. The Picosatellite for Autonomous Rendezvous and Docking on-Orbit eXperiment, or Paradox, is the second of four missions to demonstrate autonomous rendezvous and docking with a picosatellite-class satellite. A strong technical contribution highlighted within the thesis involves developing an open architecture rendezvous targeting algorithm for the Paradox mission in the face of large mission architecture uncertainties. The robust targeting algorithm builds from previous work utilizing an optimizer based on the Clohessey-Wiltshire equations and an iterative Lambert targeter. The contribution extends the rendezvous transfer times by including a multi-revolution Lambert targeter. The rendezvous algorithm will perform successfully given any launch vehicle and target spacecraft vehicle supporting the notion of an open architecture to satisfy the mission. The development of the algorithm is embedded within the context of the systems engineering processes to clearly showcase the intimate connection between systems engineering processes and the technical engineering design of a mission. / text

Préserver la polonité en exil : les formes de mobilisation politique de l’Hôtel Lambert en France et dans l’Empire ottoman (1831-1853) / Preserving “la polonité” in exile : the forms of political mobilization of l’Hôtel Lambert in France and the Ottoman Empire (1831-1853)

Papiez, Katarzyna 20 September 2018 (has links)
This thesis shows the role of l’Hôtel Lambert, political party led by Prince A. J. Czartoryski from Paris, and his agency, founded by Michał Czaykowski, in Constantinople, in the struggle for Poland’s freedom. Through the comparison of the political actions taken by these two characters from France and the Ottoman Empire in the first half of the 19th century, emerges the analysis of the modus operandi of l’Hôtel Lambert, guided by the hope of reconquering independence of the oppressed homeland and to preserve “la polonité” abroad. This research is complemented by the study of the reception policy of the Sublime Porte, vis-à-vis the refugees of the Hungarian Revolution who seek asylum on the Ottoman territory, in which the conversion to Islam of some of these exiles holds an important place. Moreover, the analysis of the cultural transfer in the two host countries and of the socio-economic situation of the Polish refugees in the Ottoman Empire gives an in-depth view of the construction of the interactions of these exiles in their new societies. Another aspect of this research is centered on the creation of the Polish colony in the Ottoman Empire, social laboratory of “la polonité” in exile.

Translating slang : A comparison of the translation of slang expressions in John Greens Paper Towns into Dutch and Swedish

Rosenqvist, Anna January 2016 (has links)
The study investigates how slang and spoken language markers in English in the Young Adult novel Paper Towns by John Green have been translated into Dutch and Swedish. An analyse of the expressions found in the first chapter of the novel, based on the method created by Lambert and van Gorp (1985), shows the translation strategies and the underlying translational norms. The results of the analysis of the preliminary data of the translations points towards adequate translation strategies. At a micro level, the results indicate more acceptable translation strategies regarding the translation of slang and spoken language markers, with slightly more source-orientation in the Dutch translation.

DIVISÃO DE POLÍGONOS IRREGULARES DO ELIPSÓIDE BIAXIAL NA SUPERFÍCIE DA PROJEÇÃO AZIMUTAL EQUIVALENTE DE LAMBERT / Irregular polygon partitioning on the biaxial ellipsoid on the surface of the Lambert azimuthal equal-area projection

Stanque, Edson Luis 03 October 2007 (has links)
This dissertation supplies the methodology of the measure (area) in the Earth model adopted for Geodesy. This model is the ellipsoid of revolution, in which the system of Cartesian coordinates, the curvilinear coordinate system and the polar coordinate system are described. The coordinate nature in the development of the surface measure calculation is discussed. The following demonstrations are illustrated: the ellipse equation, the eccentricity of the ellipse, the meridian section curvature radius equation, the meridian transversal section curvature radius equation and elliptic integral. It define algebraic geodesic line and geometrically. The juridical basis are the article 3º of Brazilian Federal Law 10.267/2001, which modify article 176 of the Brazilian Federal Law 6.015/1973 (Public Record Law) and adds to this article the paragraphs 3º and 4º, the paragraph 3º of article 225 of the Brazilian Law 6.015/1973 and the article 971 of the Código de Processo Civil (CPC), which require the coordinates of the corners of the real property on the Brazilian Geodetic System (SGB). The partitioning of the regular ellipsoid quadrilateral and the partitioning of the irregular ellipsoid quadrilateral located in the real property Pó de Serra is presented. To become this partitioning, it was used surface of the Lambert azimuthal equal-area projection, i. e., the curvilinear geodetic coordinates in plane coordinates has been transformed. The surface partitioning was determined using the method area equation of the Gauss trapezes connected with the equation of the straight line. The direct problem of the Lambert azimuthal equal-area projection and the inverse problem supply the methodology that become feasible the juridical exigence (articles 176 and 225 of Brazilian Federal Law 6.015/1973 and article 971 of the CPC). The methodology to the geodetic coordinates system with the purpose to calculate the partitioned areas of surface on the ellipsoid can be applied. The calculation of surface measure supplies the effective practice of the mencioned juridical basis.

Euthanasia and suicide medically assisted : does the French law can and has to evolve

Dupont, Bernard-Marie 07 July 2014 (has links)
Euthanasia can be defined as an act to cause directly the death of a human being, so that this death quickly happens and without suffering, with the intention to deliver that or the one who is going to die from an unbearable condition. The suicide medically assisted is often moved forward as a synonym, because in the case of the euthanasia as in that of the suicide, it is the will of the patient that has to express himself, and which is essential. In the case of the euthanasia, as in the case of the suicide medically assisted, the death is given by another person. In the French law, the euthanasia and the suicide medically assisted are not authorized. Under the pressure of media business, since a few years, patients, families, nursing, associations claim a right for the death chosen as medical reasons. In a way, is claimed an opposable right to be able to choose the moment of its own death. Others oppose the decriminalization and the legalization.Does the French law can and he has to evolve? It is this question that this thesis intends to answer, in two parts. In the first part, dedicated to the comparative law, are analyzed the Belgian law of June 22nd, 2002 which legalized the euthanasia, and the bill from Quebec N 52 of June, 2013.In the second part, having noticed the specificities of the contract of care, it is put that it required there to maintain the outlawed euthanasia, or more exactly than a specific law is not imperative upon the French legal tradition, which has to maintain the prohibition of the decriminalization and the legalization of the euthanasia.

Writing Revolution: The British Radical Literary Tradition as the Seminal Force in the Development of Adult Education, its Australian Context, and the Life and Work of Eric Lambert

Merlyn, Teri, n/a January 2004 (has links)
This thesis tells the story of an historical tradition of radical literacy and literature that is defined as the British radical literary tradition. It takes the meaning of literature at its broadest understanding and identifies the literary and educational relations of what E.P. Thompson terms 'the making of the English working class' through its struggle for literacy and freedom. The study traces the developing dialectic of literary radicalism and the emergent hegemony of capitalism through the dissemination of radical ideas in literature and a groundswell of public literacy. The proposed radical tradition is defined by the oppositional stance of its participants, from the radical intellectual's critical texts to the striving for literacy and access to literature by working class people. This oppositional discourse emerged in the fourteenth century concomitant with nascent capitalism and has its literary origins in utopian vision. This nascent utopian imagination conceived a democratic socialism that underpinned the character of much of the following oppositional discourse. The thesis establishes the nexus of the oppositional discourse as a radical literary tradition and the earliest instances of adult education in autodidacticism and informal adult education. The ascent of middle class power through the industrial revolution is shadowed by the corresponding descent of the working class into poverty. Concomitant with this social polarisation is the phenomena of working class literary agency as the means to political and economic agency. While Protestant dissenting groups such as the Diggers and Levellers were revolutionary activists, it was Methodism that formed a bulwark against revolution. Yet it was their emphasis on self-improvement that contributed to an increasingly literate populace. Radical texts produced and disseminated by individuals and organisations and read by autodidactics and informal reading groups are seminal in the formation of a working class identity. Spearheaded by the Chartist movement, education became a central ethic of working class politics and the civil struggle for economic and political justice throughout the nineteenth and well into the twentieth centuries. The avant garde movements of the early twentieth century are analysed as a strand of this tradition. The narrative of the thesis then moves to the penal colony of Australia and explores the radical literary tradition's development there. Early colonial culture is seen as having a strong impetus towards a developing a native literary expression of the new land. Where conservative colonial literature struggled to differentiate itself from formal British literary models, the radical heritage and its utopian vision of a working man's paradise gave definitive expression to the Australian experience. This expression was strongly influenced by Chartist ideals. The British radical literary tradition is thus seen to have had a dominant influence in the development of a native radical literary tradition that strove to identify the national character. Socialist thought developed in Australia in concert with that in the parent culture, and anarchist and libertarian trends found a ready home amongst independent minded colonials. Yet, in preventing the formation of a native aristocracy the small radical population made a compromise with liberalism that saw a decidedly conservative streak develop in the early labour movement. There were little in the way of sophisticated radical literary offerings at first, but from the mid-nineteenth century a vanguard of radicals produced a thriving native press and other fugitive text forms. At the turn of the century the native radical literary tradition was vibrantly diverse, with a definitive style that claimed literary ownership of the Australian character. However, exhausted by the battles over WWI conscription and isolated by censorship, the Communist Party of the Soviet Union was able to subsume the vanguard position from the socialists. The Party laid claim to the Australian radical literary tradition, at once both strengthening it with the discipline of a Marxist ideology and diminishing its independence and diversity. Party literary theory centred upon the issue of class, developing a doctrine of socialist realism that communist writers were expected to practice. How well a writer adhered to socialist realist principles became a measure of their class position and loyalty. Drawing more from primary sources, the thesis develops an analysis of the intellectual development of the Australian post-WWII writer Eric Lambert through his experience of class instability during Depression and war. The study examines Lambert's decision to join the Party and his literary response to his experiences of war, the Party, the turmoil of 1956 and life after the Party. Lambert's body of work is then analysed as the unintentional memoir of a writer working as an adult educator in the radical literary tradition. Lambert's struggles, for artistic independence within the narrow precepts of Party dogma and with class tensions, were common amongst intellectuals committed to the communist cause. Like many of his peers, Lambert resigned from the Party at the end of 1956 and suffered a period of ideological vacuum. However, he continued to write as a Marxian educator, seeking to reveal that which makes us human in the humanity of ordinary people. It is concluded that, while the Party did much to foster disciplined cohesion, the mutual distrust it generated amongst its intellectuals suppressed the independent thought that had kept the radical literary tradition alive. Although the Party developed an ideological strength within the radical literary tradition, its dominance over thirty years and subsequent fall from grace acted to fragment and discredit that centuries-old tradition which it subsumed. An argument is made for a reinvestment of the centrality of the radical literary tradition in the education of adults for the maintenance of social justice and the democratic project.

Lambert, Myriam 24 April 2018 (has links)

Contribution to the modelling of the light field distribution within Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 cultures and its influence on cellular photosynthesis processes

Fuente Herraiz, David 28 June 2019 (has links)
Dicho manuscrito se titula "Experimental characterisation of Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 cultures productivity up on light conditions". Finalmente, se está desarrollando una cuarta contribución titulada "Individual pigment contribution to overall in vivo absorption in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 cells". / The present doctoral thesis, entitled "Contribution to the modelling of the light field distribution within Synechocystis sp PCC 6803 cultures and its influence on cellular photosynthesis processes", includes several works whose objective is to advance in the understanding of the light distribution in cyanobacterial cultures and in the effects of light on the photosynthetic mechanisms of these microorganisms. It is, ultimately, another step towards the integration of mathematical models on photosynthesis at the cellular level and at the scale of culture. First, to understand how a culture of photosynthetic bacteria behaves, it is essential to predict the distribution of the light field along the bioreactor profile, both at the level of total intensity and with respect to its photon flux distribution. The distribution of wavelengths present in the medium is important since many processes of photosynthesis are regulated by certain wavelengths and are therefore modulated by the spectral distribution - the colour - of the light. Taking advantage of the inherent optical properties of the culture, a mathematical model based on the self-consistent field concept was developed. This algorithm, named in the corresponding publication as Auto-consistent Field Approximation Algorithm (AFA), provides an estimation of the light field, including the spectral evolution thereof along the optical path-length, for acclimated cultures to different radiation values. This research was published in the journal Algal Research through the article entitled "Light distribution and spectral composition within cultures of micro-algae: Quantitative modelling of the light field in photobioreactors", in which the algorithm is validated with experimental data of two strains of study of the cyanobacterium Synechocystis. Although the results were satisfactory, the use of the Lambert-Beer Law with a constant attenuation value, cannot correctly model the part of the light field with less intensity, where the attenuation coefficient ceases to be constant and the behaviour deviates from the exponential. Therefore, it was decided to model the light field with a function that generalizes the exponential case through the use of fractional calculus. A Mittag-Leffler function was used that fulfilled the formal requirements and offered a better data fit than that obtained with the Lambert-Beer law. As a remarkable finding, it was determined that the value of this parameter, which characterises the Mittag-Leffler function, was the same for the empirical data of both studied strains. This work was published in the contribution called "Estimation of the light field in photosynthetic microorganism cultures through Mittag-Leffler functions at depleted light conditions" in the journal Journal of Quantitative Spectroscopy & Radiative Transfer. Thereafter we proceeded to use both research works to calculate the light field within Synechocystis cultures and relate it to its maximum productivity. Specifically, it has been studied, as an indicator of the performance of photosynthesis, the production of oxygen and the associated respiratory mechanisms under different light intensities. This research is in its final phase and the writing of the article is being finalised to submit it to a scientific journal soon. This manuscript is entitled "Experimental characterization of Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 cultures productivity up on light conditions". Finally, a fourth contribution entitled "Individual pigment contribution to overall in vivo absorption in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 cells" is under development. This research studies the amount of light absorbed by Synechocystis chromophores according to the type of employed illumination and calculates the concentration of pigments present in the cell. Finalment, s'està desenvolupant una quarta contribució titulada "Individual pigment contribution to overall in vivo absorption in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 cells". / Fuente Herraiz, D. No / Sedimentation of non-homogeneous systems is the typical phenomenon indicating the physical instability as a key measure to the quality control of the preparation products. Currently, the determination methods for the sedimentation of non-homogeneous preparations are based on manual measurement or semi-quantitative observation, lacking of either automation or quantitative dynamic analysis. The purpose of this research was to realize automatic and quantitative monitoring of the sedimentation dynamics for non-homogenous systems as suspension, emulsions at laboratory level. Non-contact measurement method has been established to determine the sedimentation behaviors in a standard quartz tube for sedimentation, with internal diameter and height 23 mm and 215 mm, respectively, with controlled temperature and light intensity. As high performance camera has been equipped, the sedimentation images with high spatial and temporal resolution could be acquired, which can continuously capture sedimentation images with the resolution of 2048 x 2048 pixel at a maximum rate of 60 slides/s. All the pictures were processed to extract the luminance matrix top-down along the fixed vertical midline of each picture, which implied sedimentation characteristics of the system at the moment the picture was taken. Combining all the luminance matrixes along vertical middle lines of the pictures, a time-luminance matrix profile was obtained. Digital image processing techniques were used to eliminate interference and establish a three-dimensional surface model of the sedimentation dynamics. Then, the derivative mutation algorithm has been developed for the intelligent identification of sedimentation interface with threshold optimization so as to quantitatively analyze the sedimentation dynamics with visualization. The sedimentation curve and sedimentation dynamic equation of the non-homogeneous system were finally outputted by numerical fitting. The methodology was validated for great significance in determinations of small volume samples, parallel control multiple batches, and long period of time automatic measurement.
