This dissertation examines the discursive terms upon which people come to understand their experiences with a yeast-related disorder known speculatively within biomedical practice as Candida. Following the critical interrogations posed by feminist and poststructural theorizings, I aim not to prove or disprove Candidas etiological case. My aim, rather, is to question what can be learned about the social workings of undefined illness through attending to how people talk about their experiences with Candida. I am concerned both with peoples experiences of Candida, and in how these illness experiences come to be structured in and through the wider discursive framings of biomedicine, gender and dietary discipline. As Candida continues to emerge as unintelligibleand thus disorientingform of illness, the urgency lies, I argue, not only in representing these often nebulous illness experiences, but also in questioning how these illness experiences come to be shaped.

Phased array antenna with significant reduction of active controls / Antenne réseaux à commande de phase avec une réduction significative du nombre d'éléments

L'objectif de cette thèse est d'exploiter les phénomènes des ondes de fuite pour améliorer les performances des antennes classiques à ouverture pour les applications spatiales. Ici, nous considérons des configurations planaires où les ondes de fuite sont excitées entre un plan de masse et un superstrat partiellement réfléchissant. Des réseaux de petites ouvertures sur le plan de masse sont utilisés pour alimenter les antennes considérées. Les structures avec superstrat sont développées en configuration réseaux simples ou réseaux à commande de phase, considérées intéressantes en termes de flexibilité du système pour des liens satellitaires de nouvelle génération.Pour étudier efficacement ces antennes, nous avons développé un outil d'analyse basé sur une approche spectrale avec fonction de Green. Cet outil permet d'analyser les structures proposées en prenant en compte l'impact du couplage mutuel entre les éléments sur les performances de rayonnement avec une réduction du temps de calcul et d'utilisation de mémoire.L'augmentation du gain des structures à ondes de fuite peut ouvrir la voie à la réduction du nombre d'éléments des réseaux associés, et donc des commandes en amplitude et phase. Dans une configuration à ondes de fuite, chaque élément du réseau rayonne avec une ouverture équivalente plus grande, augmentant ainsi l'espacement entre les éléments sans affecter le gain global de la structure. Comme largement expliqué dans le manuscrit, les solutions à ondes de fuite représentent par conséquent un avantage majeur pour les antennes du segment utilisateur.En plus de l'amélioration du gain, la technologie à ondes de fuite peut être efficacement exploitée pour synthétiser le diagramme de rayonnement, en choisissant correctement les paramètres de conception de l'antenne. Cette caractéristique peut être utilisée dans les réseaux à commande de phase, pour produire un diagramme d'élément qui minimise les pertes par dépointage et qui filtre les lobes de réseaux. Une procédure de synthèse pour des antennes réseaux raréfiés à ondes de fuite est ainsi présentée dans le manuscrit, ainsi qu'une nouvelle configuration de réseaux avec superstrat irrégulier. Ce dernier permet de réduire les lobes secondaires de l'antenne en utilisant une excitation uniforme. Cette dernière configuration montre clairement que la capacité de modifier le diagramme de rayonnement est la caractéristique la plus attrayante des antennes planaires à ondes de fuite, pour être utilisée dans des solutions de réseaux à commande de phase. / The objective of this thesis is to exploit the leaky-wave phenomena to enhance the performance of classical aperture antennas for space applications. Here, we consider planar configurations where the leaky modes are excited between a ground plane and a partially reflective superstrate. Arrangements of small apertures opening on the ground plane are used to feed the antennas under study. The superstrate-like leaky-wave structures are developed in array or phased array configurations, considered of interest in terms of flexibility of the system for next generation satellite links. In order to efficiently study planar leaky-wave arrays, we have developed an analysis tool based on a Green's function spectral approach. The developed tool allows to precisely analyze the proposed structure by taking into account the impact of the mutual coupling among the elements on the radiation performance of the whole antenna. In addition, it can handle extremely large structures in terms of wavelengths with a small computational effort with respect to commercial tools. In particular, the gain enhancement of leaky-based structures can pave the way to the reduction of the number of elements of the associated phased arrays. In a leaky-wave configuration each element of the array will radiate with a larger equivalent aperture allowing a larger spacing among elements without affecting the final gain of the whole structure. This aspect is particularly important in the case of phased arrays, where phase shifters and control cells are, typically, the most expensive components of the system. As extensively explained in the manuscript, antennas for user segment might find the highest benefit by using leaky-wave solutions. Besides the gain enhancement, the leaky-wave technology can be effectively exploited to conveniently shape the radiation pattern by properly engineering the design parameters of the antenna. This capability can be used in phased arrays to generate a convenient element pattern to minimize the scan losses and filter the grating lobes appearing in the visible space when dealing with periodicities larger than a wavelength. Therefore, a synthesis procedure for thinned leaky-wave arrays is presented in the manuscript. Also, a novel array configuration, the irregular superstrate array, is presented. The irregular superstrate allows the reduction of the side lobes of the antenna below -20 dB in the considered 2.5 % band, using a uniform excitation. This last configuration clearly shows that the shaping capability of leaky-wave antennas is the most appealing feature to be used in phased array solutions.

Computational Studies of Electrorheological Emulsions

In this thesis we report the results of investigations on the rheological response of emulsions to the application of the electric field. A front-tracking finite difference scheme is used in conjunction with Taylor-Melcher leaky dielectric theory to study the problem. The numerical results in different regions of the deformation-circulation map show that the structure formation in regions I and III can be hindered by the hydrodynamic effect. This is opposite to what is observed in the perfect dielectric cases and region II of the map. For perfect dielectric systems, where the electrohydrodynamics effects are absent, droplets form chain-like structures spanning the distance between the electrodes after the application of the electric field. Subsequently, the chains interact with each other to form columns comprising two or more chains. Point-dipole approximation is used to analyze the structure formation and it is shown that it is also applicable to region II where the hydrodynamic effect is weak and the behavior of the system is mainly governed by the dielectrophoretic forces. It is shown that the chain formation is not possible in regions I and III due to the competition between the dipolar force and torque on one side and hydrodynamic effect on the other side. In region I, the hydrodynamic torque prevents the chain formation by competing with the dipolar torque, which tends to align the drops with the electric field. On the other hand, in region III, the repulsive nature of the hydrodynamic effect opposes the attractive dipolar force and does not allow the particles to form stable chains.

Mechanism of Action of Caloxin

The plasma membrane Ca2+-pump (PMCA) is a Ca2+-Mg2+- ATPase that expels Ca2+ from cells to help them maintain low concentrations of cytosolic Ca2+. Four genes (PMCAl to PMCA4) encode various isoforms ofthis pump. Caloxin is a novel peptide that was selected for binding to the second putative extracellular domain of PMCAl. Caloxin inhibits the Ca2+- Mg2+-ATPase in human erythrocyte leaky ghosts which primarily contain PMCA4. The objectives of this thesis are to delineate the mechanism of this inhibition and to determine its PMCA isoform selectivity. Caloxin inhibition of the PMCA pump in erythrocyte ghosts is non-competitive with respect to the substrates Ca2+ and ATP and the activator calmodulin. This was expected because the high affinity binding site for Ca2+ and sites for ATP and calmodulin are intracellular whereas caloxin is a peptide selected for binding to the second extracellular domain of the pump. In the reaction cycle, PMCA forms a 140 kDa acylphosphate enzyme intermediate from ATP (forward reaction) or orthophosphate (reverse reaction). Caloxin inhibits the acylphosphate formation in the forward but not in the reverse reaction. These results suggest that caloxin inhibits conformational changes required during the reaction cycle of the pump. In COS-M6 cells overexpressing PMCA4, caloxin inhibited the Ca2+ -Mg2+ATPase but with a marginally lower affinity than in the erythrocyte ghosts. Caloxin inhibition was also observed in insect cells overexpressing PMCA2. Several unsuccessful attempts were made to overexpress functional PMCAl. The work on isoform selectivity would require high level of expression of various PMCA isoforms and problems related to this requirement are discussed. Caloxin appears to inhibit the PMCA pumps by binding to the second putative extracellular domain and thus affecting the conformation of the protein. Stream specificity and asymmetries in feature binding and content-addressable access in visual encoding and memory

Yes / Human memory is content addressable—i.e., contents of the memory can be accessed using partial information about the bound features of a stored item. In this study, we used a cross-feature cuing technique to examine how the human visual system encodes, binds, and retains information about multiple stimulus features within a set of moving objects. We sought to characterize the roles of three different features (position, color, and direction of motion, the latter two of which are processed preferentially within the ventral and dorsal visual streams, respectively) in the construction and maintenance of object representations. We investigated the extent to which these features are bound together across the following processing stages: during stimulus encoding, sensory (iconic) memory, and visual shortterm memory. Whereas all features examined here can serve as cues for addressing content, their effectiveness shows asymmetries and varies according to cue–report pairings and the stage of information processing and storage. Position-based indexing theories predict that position should be more effective as a cue compared to other features. While we found a privileged role for position as a cue at the stimulus-encoding stage, position was not the privileged cue at the sensory and visual short-term memory stages. Instead, the pattern that emerged from our findings is one that mirrors the parallel processing streams in the visual system. This stream-specific binding and cuing effectiveness manifests itself in all three stages of information processing examined here. Finally, we find that the Leaky Flask model proposed in our previous study is applicable to all three features.

Uppsatsens har som avsikt att behandla ämnet könsfördelning inom ledningsgrupper i bolag.Detta genom att belysa de läckor som teorin “The leaky pipeline” tar upp som orsaker till attkvinnor i större utsträckning än män inte når de högre positionerna inom organisationer. Vilkametoder som skall användas för att nå en jämnare könsfördelning är en fråga som ständigtdiskuteras och debatteras. Det råder delade meningar om hur man bör gå till väga och ämnetär på många sätt högaktuellt. Då ingen av sidorna hittat ett tillräckligt bra tillvägagångssätt föratt lösa situationen anser vi att det vore intressant med en fördjupning i detta ämne. Vi harupprättat en litteraturgenomgång, teori samt en kvalitativ studie för att finna samband och eneventuell lösning.Syftet med uppsatsen är att med hjälp av individer på ledande positioner i organisationer få enförståelse kring orsaken till att kvinnor faller bort i sin karriär oftare än män, samt hur dettakan motverkas. Resultatet av vår studie visar de olika läckor som återfinns i teorin “The leakypipeline” och de tillvägagångsätt som kan användas för att motverka dessa. Vi identifierar deredan givna läckorna: exkludering, brist på motivation och stöttning från organisationen, menser även att läckan, brist på erfarenhet, bör finnas i teorin. Den läckan som beskriver bortfalltill följd av barnafödande och familjeliv ser vi blir svagare vilket tyder på att gamla strukturersuddas ut. / This paper seeks to address the topic “gender distribution in corporate management teams”and highlight the leaks in the theory "The leaky pipeline". Which methodsthat should be used to achieve a better gender balance is an issue that is constantly discussed.There are differing views on how to reach a solution. Since it is such a highly topical subjectthat is still not solved we felt it would be interesting to delve into it. We have chosen toprepare a literature review and theory to try to find a connection with the qualitative study wehave done in the context of the essay.The purpose of this paper is that with the help of individuals in leadership positions inorganizations gain an understanding of why women fall out in their career more often thanmen, and how it can be countered. The results of our study show the various leaks appearingin the theory The leaky pipeline and the procedures that can be used to counter them. Weidentify the already given leaks: exclusion, lack of motivation and jacking from theorganization, but also see that the leak “lack of experience” should be included in the theory.The leak that addresses failures due to childbearing and family life are become weaker,suggesting that old structures are being blurred.This paper is written in Swedish.

A simulation tool for the analysis and design of leaky wave antennas in laterally shielded planar technology with application to metamaterials

Leaky-waves have been a topic of increasing interest in the last years, with diverse practical applications in many different engineering fields. From periodic, FSS, EBG or even metamaterial leaky-wave based antennas to waveguide filters and higher efficiency energy guiding, they all share a common base structure: a travelling-wave propagating within a metal encapsulation, that can be open or closed, and altered by a planar metallization of periodic nature, from which the energy may radiate. Due to the fact that these antennas are usually electrically large and the periodic printed circuit requires a certain grade of complexity, 3D commercial software is prohibitively time consuming. Also, the homebrew methods developed up to this day are either not rigorous and accurate enough or unable to deal with complex periodic geometries. At this point, the evolution of leaky-wave antennas needs a solid, efficient and versatile tool where to base the future design research on. In this work a novel simulation tool for waveguide embedded leaky-wave antennas is presented. It is based on a full-wave Method of Moments applied to the spectral domain Green Functions for a rigorous modal analysis of the finite structure. The use of Subdomain basis functions allows the software to model complex periodic geometries, overcoming a main limitation, and the analytical nature of the method combined with its 2.5D approach, results in a significant computing time reduction. It is built on a modular coding philosophy and provided with a user-friendly graphical interface, and an intuitive working procedure, making the program not only fast and accurate, but also easy to use and extend to new geometries. Finally, it is remarkable the educational potential of this new analysis software, since it identifies higher order effects as bandgaps and multi-harmonic radiation from a complete and simple modal approach.

Switched multi-hop FCFS networks - the influence of traffic shapers on soft real-time performance

<p>In the past 10 years, the bandwidths and processing capabilities of the networks have increased dramatically. The number of real-time applications using these networks has also increased. The large number of real-time packets might, in a switched multi-hop network, lead to unpredictable traffic patterns. This is not a problem when the traffic intensity is low, but if the same network is used by a large number of users simultaneously, the overall performance of the network degrades. In fact, unpredictable delays in the delivery of the message can adversely affect the execution of the tasks dependent on these messages, even if we take into account the soft real-time performance.</p><p>In this paper, we investigate the effect of traffic shapers on soft real-time performance. We will consider a switched multi-hop network with FCFS queues. We will implement two versions of the network simulator. One version will be without traffic shaper and the other version will use a traffic shaper. By comparing the results (for average delay, deadline miss ratio etc.) from both the versions, we will try to conclude if it is really beneficial to use traffic shapers for soft real-time performance. Leaky bucket and token bucket algorithms are the most popular ones for traffic shaper implementation. We will consider leaky bucket algorithm for our analysis. We analyse different versions of the leaky bucket and present the trade-off’s involved.</p>
