Cloud computing aims to cut down on the outlay and operational expenses involved in setting up and running applications. To do this, an application is split into a set of virtualized hardware and software resources. This virtualized application can be autonomously managed, making it responsive to the dynamic changes affecting its running environment. This is referred to as Application Life-cycle Management (ALM). In cloud computing, ALM is a growing but immature market, with many offers claiming to significantly improve productivity. However, all these solutions are faced with a major restriction: the duality between the level of autonomy they offer and the type of applications they can handle. To address this, this thesis focuses on managing the initial deployment of an application to demonstrate that the duality is artificial. The main contributions of this work are presented in a platform named VAMP (Virtual Applications Management Platform). VAMP can deploy any legacy application distributed in the cloud, in an autonomous, generic and reliable way. It consists of: • a component-based model to describe the elements making up an application and their projection on the running infrastructure, as well as the dependencies binding them in the applicative architecture; • an asynchronous, distributed and reliable protocol for self-configuration and self-activation of the application; • mechanisms ensuring the reliability of the VAMP system itself. Beyond implementing the solution, the most critical aspects of running VAMP have been formally verified using model checking tools. A validation step was also used to demonstrate the genericity of the proposal through various real-life implementations.

Educators' Oral Histories of Tampa Bay Area Writing Project InvolvementSaturley, Margaret Hoffman 04 April 2016 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to describe and explain participants’ perceptions of Tampa Bay Area Writing Project (TBAWP) influence on professional learning over time. This study explored Writing Project impact on professional learning by accessing the oral histories of three educators who were involved in TBAWP between 1998 and 2004. The research question was:
• In what ways, if any, has long-term involvement in the Tampa Bay Area Writing Project impacted the teaching practice, career growth, and professional learning of participating educators?
This qualitative study employed constructivism as the theoretical framework. Analysis of study data resulted in specific findings. Educators’ stories revealed Writing Project participation significantly impacted their teaching practice, career growth, and professional learning. The lasting impact of Writing Project involvement was seen in the ways in which educators infused the concept of community into their teaching practice, accepted leadership positions within the profession, and ultimately went on to conduct professional learning experiences for educators.
Data analysis generated a conceptual model that examines the lasting impact of educator professional learning. Implications of this finding are significant for longitudinal inquiry of educator professional learning and for impact studies of long-term Writing Project involvement. In addition to providing exemplars of educator stories of practice over time, the study contributed to development of a fuller understanding of effective professional development, educator professional learning, and the lasting impact of Writing Project involvement.

To a great extent, the success of the Web of Data depends on the ability to reach out legacy data locked in silos inaccessible from the web. In the last 15 years, various works have tackled the problem of exposing various structured data in the Resource Description Format (RDF). Meanwhile, the overwhelming success of NoSQL databases has made the database landscape more diverse than ever. NoSQL databases are strong potential contributors of valuable linked open data. Hence, the object of this thesis is to enable RDF-based data integration over heterogeneous data sources and, in particular, to harness NoSQL databases to populate the Web of Data. We propose a generic mapping language, xR2RML, to describe the mapping of heterogeneous data sources into an arbitrary RDF representation. xR2RML relies on and extends previous works on the translation of RDBs, CSV/TSV and XML into RDF. With such an xR2RML mapping, we propose either to materialize RDF data or to dynamically evaluate SPARQL queries on the native database. In the latter, we follow a two-step approach. The first step performs the translation of a SPARQL query into a pivot abstract query based on the xR2RML mapping of the target database to RDF. In the second step, the abstract query is translated into a concrete query, taking into account the specificities of the database query language. Great care is taken of the query optimization opportunities, both at the abstract and the concrete levels. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach, we have developed a prototype implementation for MongoDB, the popular NoSQL document store. We have validated the method using a real-life use case in Digital Humanities.

QUANTIFYING CURRENT SEDIMENT DEPOSITION, LEGACY SEDIMENTS, AND PRE-IMPOUNDMENT VERTICAL ACCRETION AND CARBON DYNAMICS FOLLOWING DAM REMOVAL IN A RECENTLY RESTORED TIDAL FRESHWATER WETLANDDavis, Melissa J 01 January 2017 (has links)
Damming disrupts natural sediment flow to downstream resulting in legacy sediment accumulation. Legacy sediments have been well investigated in streams throughout the Piedmont region; however, there is no research of legacy sediments following dam removal in low-gradient Coastal Plain streams. Research objectives were to: characterize legacy sediments in a low-gradient stream restoration, quantify pre-impoundment accretion and carbon dynamics, and assess current sediment deposition rates via 14C analyses within sediment cores and sediment collection tiles. Carbon accumulation and accretion rates of modern tidal sediment have reached that of the tidal relic benchmark and current sediment deposition rates are similar between the natural reference and restored tidal wetlands. At this site, the pattern of legacy sediment accumulation and stream incision was reversed relative to previous studies in higher gradient systems. Results suggest in dam impacted Coastal Plain streams, legacy sediment may become a benefit rather than a liability for downstream tidal wetlands.

A sociological critique of the legacy of the London 2012 Paralympic GamesKerr, Shane January 2015 (has links)
This thesis presents a sociological critique of the concept of legacy as it surrounded the London 2012 Paralympic Games. A sociological approach was adopted to challenge much of the spontaneous sociology that surrounds the ascendancy of legacy within the Olympic and Paralympic space. Legacy, disability and the Paralympic Games are the predominant structures of the research problem. The literature review attempts to present a sociology of the sociological approaches in these fields. Underpinning the research design is Bourdieu et al. s (1991) epistemological hierarchy which consists of and proceeds from the break , the construction of a conceptual framework to the empirical design. This hierarchy contributed to the repositioning of legacy from the pursuit of cause and effect, or rather away from the pursuit of legitimacy and illegitimacy, of London 2012 to a study of the proposed and imposed causes and effects, legitimations and illegitimations of it. Aligned to this repositioning is the primary collection of data through interviews with five different institutional fields: government, media, corporate sponsors, disability sport and disability institutions. The research findings present a positional analysis of the inter- and intra-relations of these respective fields. In the discussion key symbolic struggles and issues are presented for each field with particular attention given to the development of the positive leaning and legitimising best ever Paralympic narrative and to the commercial and political legitimacy of the London 2012 Paralympic Games. It is concluded that legacy is ultimately a symbolic struggle of different visions of respective agents and institutions that are unable to achieve these absolute visions or ends.

Previous issue date: 2016-02-29 / The effort spent in maintaining systems regarded as legacies is relatively higher than that of new projects development effort. Such systems should be kept in place because, in most cases, are difficult to replace, given the complexity of changing the interaction and the impact on the functioning of processes, ie, the system can not stop. Thus, maintenance or modifications represent a sign of success for a Legacy System because it means that it is still useful and worth investing resources to keep it updated and running. However, if changes are carried out due to an emergency on business dynamics, and proper documentation is not completed, problems involving control and management of future maintenance might arise. In this context, it is the Requirements Engineering´s responsibility, as a sub-area of Software Engineering, to improve processes by proposing methods, tools and techniques that promote the development of the Requirement´s documentation, so that the requirements are in accordance with the satisfaction of stakeholders, meeting the business attributes in question. The objective of this work was to apply the Requirements Engineering in Legacy Systems of Management and Costing Methods of Sales Proposals in the stamping industry. Through literature review, document analysis and action research, the study was divided into four phases considering the development of the Sales Proposal Management and Costing Method System and three maintenance stages performed with the application of Requirements Engineering. In the first phase, a group of artifacts was generated expressing all system features. In the second phase, a progressive maintenance incorporated new features based in the system´s backlog with requirements collected in the first phase. The third phase included a new stamping business area that was not present in the initial development. Lastly, the fourth phase included new maintenance adjustments that answered to the needs of the stamping business system. The results of the study phases proved that the processes described in the Requirements Engineering (RE) were present in the information gathering actions, analysis, documentation and verification and validation of requirements, bringing academic and technical knowledge on issues related to legacy systems, ER and Software Engineering. As a result, it was concluded that the Requirements Engineering can be applied to Legacy Systems of Management and Costing Methods of Sales Proposals in stamping company in the industry.

#NewsOnTikTok : A content analysis of the use of text elements by legacy news media on TikTokSalb, Sorrel Franziska January 2021 (has links)
With many legacy news media brands struggling to maintain relevance and financial support, they are looking to social networks to connect with new audiences. The video sharing platform TikTok has experienced rapid growth in recent years and has a strong user base of Gen Z users which are a demographic which legacy news media are increasingly attempting to engage with. A number of legacy news media brands have established a presence on TikTok and begun experimenting with different formats. While there have been a few more general analyses of informational content on TikTok, no research to date has focused specifically on how different text elements are used for conveying news. This thesis addresses this gap through investigating how legacy news media (newspapers and TV) are using text, closed captions, and captions on TikTok. Moreover, styles of communication and TikTok editorial tools used by legacy news media are examined in detail. These elements are explored using a quantitative content analysis which analyses 200 videos from eight popular legacy news media brands from the USA, Britain, and Australia. Social media logic and functions specific to TikTok are used as a framework to analyze the problem, with the results showing that most of the legacy news media accounts have somewhat adopted social media logic in their use of text elements on TikTok.
