The "life and work" of South African Historiography

South Africa has had three periods of historiographical change. As South Africa has transitioned from colonialism, to apartheid, to democracy, historiography has been influenced by those in power. Post-1994 and with the onset of a democratic government, the Nation sought to create a new historiographical framework. However, as this attempt to build a National historiography developed questions could be raised as to whether this historiography was inclusive of a variety of sources? This dissertation looks at three areas regarding South African historiography. First, the current role of Churches in South Africa in fostering historiography. Second, the theological framework of "Ras, Volk en Nasie", the "Kairos Document", and the "Belhar Confession". Third, the depiction of South Africa by the Church of Scotland's National magazine "Life and Work" during 1975 – 1985. By looking at this time period, the thesis shows that as various strands of theology developed in South Africa, these changes had connotations within the Church of Scotland. Life and Work shows a distinct change in attitude towards the Dutch Reformed Church and the Black Consciousness movement. It argues that underrepresented stories about South Africa allow for a holistic historiography. Churches in South Africa have an opportunity to use their position within society to develop this holistic historiography and thus, historiography becomes a practical theological issue. / Dissertation (MTh)--University of Pretoria, 2017. / Church History and Church Policy / MTh / Unrestricted

The relationship between work and non-work support and work-life balance in Taiwan

The aim of this study is to explore the relationship between employees' supportive resource (workplace support and non-work support) and their work-life balance in Taiwan. The roles of work-life balance's four components (work-to-life conflict, life-to-work conflict, work-to-life facilitation, and life-to-work facilitation) in the relationship between support and employee outcomes (psychological wellbeing, turnover intention, affective- and continuance organizational commitment) were examined. Eight-hundred surveys were distributed to for-profit and non-profit sectors. After eliminating the invalid questionnaires, 658 valid questionnaires were used for further analysis. The findings of this study suggested that three kinds of support (organizational support, supervisor support, and non-work support) were positively related to employees' work-life balance. However, no significant relationship was found between the availability and usage of the work-life balance policies and employees' work-life balance. More importantly, it was found that work-life balance and four components mediate the relationship between supervisor support and all employee outcomes. The relationship between employees' awareness of the policies that organization offered and favourable employee outcomes is also mediated by work-life balance. Interestingly, the availability and usage of the policies were not found to be related to either employees' better work-life balance or favourable employee outcomes. It is thus recommended that emphasizing supervisor support might be a better option than introducing various work-life balance policies for employees to achieve a better work-life balance. Otherwise, the work-life balance policies offered have to meet employees' needs.

O processo de movimentação e relação com a QVT : um estudo de caso do Comando da 3ª Região Militar

O presente estudo de caso aborda temas como a Qualidade de Vida no Trabalho (QVT) intrinsecamente ligada à movimentação de militares. O propósito desta dissertação é analisar a QVT dos militares pertencentes ao Comando da 3ª Região Militar (Cmdo da 3ª RM), com o intuito de identificar e, consequentemente, minimizar os aspectos negativos, e maximizar a QVT neste ambiente. O segmento inicial situa o estudo e a formação do profissional militar na atualidade. Posteriormente, segue o referencial teórico, dissertando sobre QVT, sua origem e sua evolução conceitual na abordagem organizacional, tendo como ponto de partida a adaptação do modelo de Walton (1973) para critérios de avaliação da qualidade de vida, contendo questões ligadas às competências e atribuições do militar, distribuído em 25 categorias, na tentativa de análise da QVT, em que o maior destaque se apresenta na forma de dois aspectos importantes: o relacionamento e o trabalho. A análise contempla também a integração social no trabalho, e juntamente com a gestão formam os fatores mais críticos para a amostra em estudo, de 38 (trinta e oito) respondentes. Os resultados obtidos indicaram que o Cmdo da 3ª RM apresenta aspectos de QVT a serem melhorados. Combinações importantes derivadas da análise do conjunto dos achados deste estudo destacam a relevância do ferramental da qualidade de vida no trabalho, como instrumento de apoio à gestão de recursos humanos, sobretudo na medida em que potencializam canais de diálogo, entre comando e comandados. O trabalho justifica-se pela importância deste tema e pela carência de trabalhos técnicos nesta área, e aplica-se não somente a Organizações Militares como a qualquer organização, por incluir uma metodologia baseada em conceitos gerais de QVT. / This case study discusses topics such as the Quality of Life at Work (QLW) intrinsically related to military personnel transfers. The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze the QLW of the military personnel of the Command of the 3rd Military Region (CMD 3rd MR), in order to identify and consequently minimize the negative aspects and maximize QLW in that environment. Initially, the current educational background and training of military personnel are discussed. Later, the theoretical framework on QLW, its origin and its conceptual evolution in the organizational approach is presented, taking as a starting point the adaptation of Walton's model (1973) for criteria for assessing the quality of life, with questions related to skills and tasks of the military personnel, categorized in twenty-five areas in an attempt to analyze the QLW; in that model two important aspects are highlighted: relationship and work. The analysis also considers the social interactions at work and the management, which are the most critical factors for the sample being studied ‒ 38 (thirty-eight) participants. The results indicated that the CMD 3rd MR presents aspects of QLW that should be improved. Based on important combinations found in the analysis of this study, we can notice that it is very important to use tools to measure the quality of life at work to support the management of human resources, especially in order to improve the communication in the chain of command. The work is justified by the importance of this matter and by the lack of studies in this area and it also applies not only to military organizations, but to any organization, since it uses a methodology based on general concepts of QLW.

Quality of life experiences of parents of children with autism in Scotland

The purpose of this study was to enter the world of the parents living with a child with autism, wondering what quality of life means for them and whether their engagement with social work services makes any difference to their quality of lives. Understanding the quality of life experiences of the parents of children with autism is relevant for policy making and social work practice. Based in a Scottish context, the objectives for this research were as follows: To explore the parent carers' description of the term quality of life To describe the parent carers' views on their quality of life in the context of the services provided by social services within (departments of) local authorities. To understand the systems, processes and procedures put in place by the local authorities to support parent carers To explore the scope for changes, if any, in the present social work approach in order to enhance the quality of life of parent carers. The study adopted a grounded theory methodology informed by a symbolic interactionist theoretical framework. Data were gathered from three study local authorities in Scotland. The participants include an almost equal number of male and female parents (total parent participants = 23); and social workers and operational managers from three study local authorities (total number of social workers =12, total number of operational managers =3). This study utilised focus groups and semi structured interviews to gather data. Using the constant comparison method, three main categories emerged; namely 'new normal', 'on-going burden' and 'limited help' which contextualised the quality of life experiences of parent participants in the study. Oppression emerged as the overarching theory. Drawing on the parental perspectives on quality of life distilled in this study, the implications for further research, professional practice and education are explored.
