Short-term effects of hydrated lime and quicklime on the decay of human remains using pig cadavers as human body analogues: Laboratory experiments

No / Contradictions and misconceptions regarding the effect of lime on the decay of human remains have demonstrated the need for more research into the effect of different types of lime on cadaver decomposition. This study follows previous research by the authors who have investigated the effect of lime on the decomposition of human remains in burial environments. A further three pig carcasses (Sus scrofa), used as human body analogues, were observed and monitored for 78 days without lime, with hydrated lime (Ca(OH)2) and with quicklime (CaO) in the taphonomy laboratory at the University of Bradford. The results showed that in the early stages of decay, the unlimed and hydrated lime cadavers follow a similar pattern of changes. In contrast, the application of quicklime instigated an initial acceleration of decay. Microbial investigation demonstrated that the presence of lime does not eliminate all aerobic bacteria. The experiment also suggested that lime functions as a sink, buffering the carbon dioxide evolution. This study complements the field observations. It has implications for the investigation of time since death of limed remains. Knowledge of the effects of lime on decomposition processes is of interest to forensic pathologists, archaeologists, humanitarian organisations and those concerned with disposal of animal carcasses or human remains in mass disasters.

Raman spectroscopy as a non-destructive screening technique for studying white substances from archaeological and forensic burial contexts

No / Raman spectroscopy was evaluated as a non-destructive analytical tool for the characterisation of white substances in burials. In addition, Fourier transform Raman spectroscopy was used to assess the conversion of hydrated lime into calcium carbonate. Fourteen samples of white substances from archaeological and forensic sites were analysed and characterised. The results show that not all white residues in burials are lime. Lime can easily be mistaken for other building materials (gypsum), for minerals (brushite) or degraded metal (cerussite). This study highlights the need for chemical analysis of white residues when encountered in burials. Analytical information derived from Raman spectra of white substances can further assist in the interpretation of the taphonomic processes of burials and their funerary context. Sugarcane juice extraction and preservation, and long-term lime pretreatment of bagasse

New technologies, such as an efficient vapor-compression evaporator, a stationary lime kiln (SLK), and the MixAlco process, compelled us to re-evaluate methods for producing sugar from cane. These technologies allow more water and lime to be used, and they add more value to bagasse. Extracting and preserving the sugars, and lime pretreating the bagasse to enhance biodigestibility, all at the same time in a pile, was demonstrated to be unfeasible; therefore, sugar extraction must occur before lime treating the bagasse. Sugar extraction should occur countercurrently by lixiviation, where liquid moves in stages opposite to the soaked bagasse (megasse), which is conveyed by screw-press conveyors that gently squeeze the fiber in each stage, improving extraction. The performance of a pilot-scale screw-press conveyor was tested for dewatering capabilities and power consumption. The unoptimized equipment decreased megasse moisture from 96 to 89%. Simulation of the process suggested that eight stages are necessary to achieve 98% recovery from typical sugarcane. The cumulative power for the screw-press conveyor system was 17.0±2.1 hp•h/ton dry fiber. Thin raw juice preserved with lime for several months showed no sucrose degradation and no quality deterioration, except for reducing sugar destruction. The lime loading needed for 1-year preservation is 0.20 g Ca(OH)2/g sucrose. Shorter times require less lime. After preservation, the juice was carbonated and filtered, and the resulting sludge pelletized. Due to their high organic content, the pellets were too weak for calcination temperatures used in the SLK. The organics must be decreased prior to pelletization and sodium must be supplemented as a binding agent. Long-term lime pretreatment of bagasse showed two delignification phases: bulk (rapid) and residual (slow). These were modeled by two simultaneous first-order reactions. Treatments with air purging and higher temperatures (50 – 57oC) delignified more effectively, especially during the residual phase, thus yielding higher cellulase-enzyme digestibilities after 2 – 8 weeks of treatment. At temperatures > 60oC, pure oxygen purging is preferred. Fresh bagasse was of better quality than old bagasse. Treatment with NaOH yielded a larger bulk delignification phase than Ca(OH)2. Long-term lime pulping of bagasse was unsuitable for copy-quality paper, but it was appropriate for strawboard and other filler applications.

Control of stack emissions using hydrated lime injections during incineration of healthcare risk waste : a case study of Biomed in Benoni

Abstract in English / Incineration is still a widely utilised method for treating healthcare risk waste in the Republic of South Africa. As much as incinerators are needed, the fact that they are still a critical source of hazardous toxic air pollutants that are not easy to manage cannot be disregarded. The Ministry of Environmental Affairs has promulgated a new regulation for General and Hazardous Waste Thermal Treatment. This exceedingly stringent air pollution legislation requires that existing incinerators be modified or redesigned to meet the new air quality standards, or face closure in the event that they fail to comply. The regulation contains strict emission requirements for concentrations of stack gases such as CO2, NO2, NOx, HCl, HF, CO, SO2, as well as TOC and PM. To be certain that emissions are within the standard, incineration facilities are instructed to reduce the acid gas emissions and to have permanent on-line monitoring equipment for stack testing of regulated pollutants. Since the promulgation of the new legislation in April 2015, none of the incinerators in South Africa has been able to achieve the new requirements. This study, based on the quantitative approach, was conducted in search of a cost-effective method of controlling acid gas emissions from incinerators without major adjustments to the plants. During the study, 60 kg of sorbacal Ca(OH)2 was injected into a lime feeder every day. A variable speed drive was used to inject Ca(OH)2 into the furnace continuously at a rate of between 2.5 kg/h and 3.5 kg/h. The temperature was maintained between 850°C and 1200°C with the use of four gas burners. Two manual blowers were utilised to ensure a continuous flow of Ca(OH)2 into the reaction chamber and filtration system. Comparative analysis was done to compare gas emission levels before and after the use of hydrated lime. Descriptive statistics were used to compute the mean, frequency and percentages, while Wilcoxon sign rank test established whether hydrated lime was significant in reducing gaseous emissions or not. Wilcoxon sign rank test showed a statistically significant difference (P<0.05) in the reduction of all gaseous emissions using hydrated lime, except particulate matter where there was a significant increase in emissions. This technology was able to achieve high removal efficiency of 97% for HCl, 86% for HF, 83% for NOx, 87% for SO2 and 74% for NO2. The optimum temperature for SO2 and NOx was 1020°C. For HCl it was between 1190°C and 1200°C, and for NO2 it was between 1120°C and 1200°C. The amount of particulate matter increased along with the concentration of the Ca(OH)2 injections. Ca(OH)2 was found to be cost effective in the controlling and capturing of gaseous emissions. It is recommended that combustion requirements, such as heat, oxygen and turbulence, be considered to reduce the amount of gases generated during the incineration of healthcare risk waste. It is also recommended that electrostatic precipitators be used instead of fabric filters to improve the efficiency of capturing the particulate matter. / Environmental Sciences / M.Sc. Comparison of calcium ameliorants and coal ash in alleviating the effects of subsoil acidity on maize root development near Middelburg, Mpumalanga

The Highveld in South Africa has many acidic soils and several coal burning power stations. These coal burning power stations generate alkaline fly ash as a waste material and it can thus serve as an ameliorant to the surrounding acidic soils. A two year field trial was undertaken to compare fly ash and other calcium ameliorants to alleviate the effects of subsoil acidity on maize root development. The field trail was established on Beestepan Farm in Middelburg, Mpumalanga. It consisted of 24 treatments, each done in triplicate, rendering a total of 72 plots. The materials used were unweathered fly ash (CCE 10%), calcitic lime (CCE 77%) and Calmasil (a calcium silicate slag, CCE 99%). Calmasil and lime were applied at rates of 0-, 1-, 2-, and 4t/ha, while fly ash was applied at 0-, 7-, 14- and 28t/ha. These treatments were applied to an acidic sandy loam soils in the presence or absence of 4t/ha gypsum. Beans were harvested after the first season following the application of amendments and maize was harvested in the second season. Yield, root length, leaf and soil analysis was undertaken to evaluate the effectiveness of the different liming materials. The effect of the treatments on fertility indicators such as pH, exchangeable acidity, Ca and Mg was investigated. Results indicated that all liming materials increased topsoil pH, soil nutrient and base status and crop yield in both seasons. Calmasil was the superior liming material in all respects. Fly ash increased pH minimally but reduced exchangeable acidity by 12% and 24% in the first and second seasons, respectively. Fly ash increased topsoil Ca levels from 74 to 102mg/kg and subsoil Ca from 61 to 114mg/kg. Topsoil Mg levels were increased from 7.3 to 16mg/kg and subsoil Mg was increased from 9.4 to 13mg/kg. The consequence of these increased nutrients was the subsequent increased foliar uptake of Ca and Mg. The substantial increase in bean yield from 958 to 1724kg/ha and maize yield from 5569 to 7553kg/ha following ash application compared well with results obtained from lime and Calmasil application. This may partly be due to the presence of additional plant nutrients such as P and K in the fly ash. Dissolution behaviour of fly ash indicates that upon exposure to acidity the release of micronutrients like B, Co, Cu, Fe, Mo, Mn and Zn occurs, and preliminary data shows that there is comparatively little concern regarding heavy metal accumulation in crops. The application of 4t/ha gypsum had no effect on pH and decreased subsoil acidity only minimally however, subsoil Ca status and acid saturation levels were considerably improved which would possibly account for the overall beneficial effect on maize yield, increasing by an average of 1071kg/ha. It was not possible to make any conclusions relating treatment application and maize root length. This field trial has confirmed that fly ash can be used as an efficient liming material and that it compares well with traditional liming materials. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Suurgronde is ‘n groot beperking tot landbou wêreldwyd. Die Suid Afrikaanse Hoëveld het menigte suurgronde en verskeie steenkool-aangedrewe kragstasies. Hiedie kragstasies produseer alkaliese vliegas as ‘n afvalproduk. Hierdie vliegas kan dus dien as ‘n grondverbeteringsmiddel vir die aangrensende suurgronde. ‘n Tweejarige veldproef was onderneem om vliegas met ander kalsium-bevattende grondverbetereringsmiddels te vergelyk om die effek van ondergrondse suurheid op mielies op te hef. Hierdie veldproef was opgeset te Beestepan plaas in Middelburg, Mpumalanga. Dit het bestaan uit 24 behandelings wat drie keer herhaal was en lewer dus ‘n totaal van 72 persele. Die kalkmateriale wat gebruik was, is onverweerde vliegas (KKE 10%), kalsitiese kalk (KKE 77%) en Calmasil (‘n kalsium silikaat slak, KKE 99%). Calmasil en kalk was toegedien teen 0-, 1-, 2-, en 4t/ha, en vliegas teen 0-, 7-, 14- en 28t/ha. Hierdie behandelinge was toegedien tot ‘n suur leemsand met of sonder gips. Vliegas het die pH minimaal verhoog, terwyl dit die uitruilbare suurheid verminder het met 12% en 24% in die eerste en tweede jaar onderskeidelik. Vliegas het bogrond Ca vlakke vanaf 74 tot 102mg/kg vermeer, sowel as ondergrond Ca vanaf 61 tot 114mg/kg. Bogrond Mg was vermeer vanaf 7.3 tot 16mg/kg, asook ondergrond Mg vanaf 9.4 tot 13 mg/kg. Die gevolg van hierdie verhoogde voedingstowwe was die toename van Ca en Mg in die blare van die gewasse. Die beduidende toename in opbrengste van boontjies vanaf 958 tot 1724mg/kg en mielies vanaf 5569 tot 7553kg/ha na die toediening van vliegas vergelyk goed met die resultate van kalk en Calmasil. Dit is gedeeltelik toe te skryf aan die teenwoordigheid van addisionele plantvoedingstowwe soos P en K in vliegas. Oplossingstudies van vliegas dui op die teenwoordigheid van mikrovoedingstowwe soos B, Co, Cu, Fe, Mo, Mn en Zn. Aanvanklike data wys dat daar relatief min kommer oor swaarmetaal akkumulasie in gewasse is. Alhoewel 4t/ha gips geen effek op pH gehad het nie, en ondergondrondse suurheid minimaal verminder het, het ondergrondse Ca en gevolglik suurversadiging heelwat verbeter. Dit mag moontlik as verduideliking dien vir die oorhoofse voordelige effek van gips op mielie opbrengste, wat verhoog het met ‘n gemiddelde 1071kg/ha. Oorvleuende omstandighede het daartoe gelei dat geen konkrete afleidings gemaak kon word oor die wortel lengte van die mielies nie. Hierdie veldproef bevestig dat vliegas as ‘n effektiewe kalkmateriaal gebruik kan word en goed vergelyk met tradisionele kalkmateriale.

Under detta arbete studeras en av Europas mest moderna cementfabriker med kapacitet att producera runt 2,6 miljoner ton cement per år. Syftet med examensarbetet är att beskriva variationen i utfallen av råmjöl och identifiera vilka orsaker till variation som är möjliga att minska. Oavsiktliga variationer av kvalitet i råmjölet kan resultera i bristande klinkerkvalitet, som i sin tur kan medföra en betydande intäktsförlust. Arbetet utgår från teorier om offensiv kvalitetsutveckling, Six sigma, processledning och cementproduktion. En metodkombination av kvantitativa och kvalitativa metoder har tillämpats för datainsamling och dataanalys, där den kvantitativa datainsamlingen baserats på historiska data från referensorganisationen. De slutsatser som redogörs för, är att processen som studeras har möjlighet till att prestera i världsklass. Huvudsakliga bidragande orsaken är metoden för styrning där systemet saknar styrgränser som leder till överstyrning. Även materialvariation vid byten av råmaterialslimpor är en betydande orsak till variansen i råmjölet. Förutsatt att styrsystemet kopplas på för tidigt efter ett genomfört limpbyte kan effekten av ett limpbyte förvärras. Vidare tyder resultaten på att 80% av den totala variationen i råmjölets kalkmättnad skapas av limpbyten. / During this work, one of Europe's most modern cement factories is studied, with the capacity to produce around 2.6 million tons of cement per year. The purpose of the thesis is to describe the variation in the outcome of raw meal and identify which causes of variation are possible to reduce. Involuntary variations in the quality of the input raw meal can result in a lack of clinker quality, which in turn can result in a significant loss of revenue. The work is based on theories relating to Total Quality Management, process management and cement production. A method combination of quantitative and qualitative methods has been applied for data collection and data analysis, where the quantitative data collection is based on historical data gathered from the reference organization. The conclusions outlined are that the process being studied has the opportunity to perform world-class. The main contributing factor is the method for control where the system lacks control limits that lead to over compensation. Also, material variation in the case of changes of raw material piles is a significant cause of the variance in the raw meal. Provided that the control system is switched on prematurely after a raw material pile change has been carried out, the effect of the change can be worsened. Furthermore, the results indicate that 80% of the total variation in the raw meal’s lime saturation is created by raw material pile changes.

A mancha preta dos citros causada pelo fungo Guignardia citricarpa Kiely [Phyllosticta citricarpa (McAlp.) Van der Aa], possui duas formas de infecção, conídios e ascósporos. Informações a respeito da importância dos conídios na epidemiologia da doença são escassas ou controversas. Visando uma maior compreensão sobre o patossistema citros-G. citricarpa (P. citricarpa), os objetivos desta dissertação foram: elaborar e validar uma escala diagramática para avaliação da severidade da mancha preta em folhas de citros; verificar o efeito da temperatura e da duração do período de molhamento na formação de apressórios formados a partir de conídios; observar por meio de microscopia eletrônica de varredura a germinação de conídios e a formação de apressórios sobre folhas destacadas de limão 'Siciliano' submetidas a diferentes temperaturas e períodos de molhamento. A escala diagramática com níveis de severidade de 1; 3; 6; 12; e 24% de área foliar lesionada foi validada por dois grupos de avaliadores, com e sem experiência na quantificação de doenças. Comparada com a avaliação sem escala, o uso da escala proporcionou melhor precisão e acurácia tanto para avaliadores experientes como inexperientes, quando considerada a estimativa média dos mesmos. Na maioria dos casos, os desvios entre estimativas e severidade atual da doença foram mais evidentes para os níveis de severidade entre 5 e 15%. A reprodutibilidade das avaliações resultou em valores de R 2 mais uniformes para a maioria dos avaliadores experientes. Diferenças consideráveis de precisão foram observadas entre avaliadores inexperientes. O efeito da temperatura (10 o C - 40 o C) e da duração do molhamento (4 - 48 h) na formação de apressórios formados a partir de conídios de G. citricarpa (P. citricarpa) foi avaliado sob condições "in vitro" e sobre a superfície de folhas de limão 'Siciliano'. A formação de apressórios ocorreu em todas as temperaturas a partir de 12 horas de molhamento, sendo os extremos de temperatura (10 o C e 40 o C) menos favoráveis à formação de apressórios. A temperatura mínima para formação de apressórios, estimada pela função beta generalizada foi de 3 o C e a máxima de 48,4 o C, ambas para 48 horas de molhamento. A formação de apressórios foi consideravelmente favorecida pela duração do período de molhamento, com o máximo de apressórios formados a 24 horas de molhamento, para a maioria das temperaturas. O período de molhamento constituído de 48 horas foi essencial para que os esporos submetidos a temperaturas de 10 o C e 40 o C, formassem apressórios. A superfície de resposta obtida pela multiplicação das funções beta generalizada e monomolecular apresentou um ajuste satisfatório para os dados observados na estimativa da porcentagem relativa de apressórios formados (R 2 =0,75). As amostras observadas em microscopia eletrônica de varredura possibilitaram a aquisição de imagens de conídios e apressórios sobre a superfície de folhas de limão 'Siciliano' em todas as combinações de temperatura e molhamento avaliadas. / Citrus black spot caused by Guignardia citricarpa Kiely [Phyllosticta citricarpa (McAlp.) van der Aa] presents two infection forms, conidia and ascospores. Information regarding the importance of the conidia in the epidemiology of the disease is scarce and controversial. Seeking a better understanding on the pathosystem citrus-G. citricarpa (P. citricarpa), the objectives of this dissertation were: elaborate and validate a diagrammatic scale for assessments of the citrus black spot; verify the effect of the temperature and of the wetness duration in the appressorium formation; observe through scanning electron microscopy the germination and formation of appressorium on outstanding lemon 'Siciliano' leaves submitted to different temperatures and wetness duration. The diagrammatic scale with severity levels of 1; 3; 6; 12; and 24% of diseased leaf area was validated by two groups of raters, with experience and without experience in the quantification of diseases. The scale provided better precision and accuracy for both experienced and inexperienced raters, considering the estimates average of them. In the majority of cases, the bias between estimated and actual disease severity were more evident for disease severity levels between 5 and 15%. The reproducibility of assessments resulted in R 2 with more uniforms values for the majority of the experienced raters, considerable differences of precision were observed among inexperienced raters. The effect of the temperature (10 o C - 40 o C) and of the wetness duration (4 - 48 h) in the germination of conidia and appressoria formation of G. citricarpa (P. citricarpa), was assessed "in vitro" and on the surface of lemon 'Siciliano' leaves. The appressoria formation occurred in all the temperatures starting from 12 hours of wetness. The extreme temperatures (10 o C and 40 o C) were less favorable to the apressorium formation. The minimum temperature for appressorium formation, estimated by generalized beta function was of 3 o C and the maximum of 48,4 o C, both for 48 hours of wetness. The appressorium formation was favored considerably by the wetness duration period, with the maximum of apressoria formed at 24 hours of wetness, for majority of the temperatures. The wetness duration period constituted of 48 hours was essential so that the spores submitted to temperatures of 10 o C and 40 o C, formed appressorium. The response surface obtained by the multiplication of the generalized beta and monomolecular functions provided a close fit to observed data in the estimate of the relative percentage of formed appressorium (R 2 =0,75). The samples observed in scanning electron microscopy made possible the acquisition of images of conidia and appressoria on the surface of lemon 'Siciliano' leaves in all the temperature combinations and wetness evaluated.

Indução de tolerância de frutos às injúrias de frio: aspectos fisiológicos e bioquímicos / Induction of fruit tolerance to chilling injury: physiological and biochemical aspects

Experimentos foram conduzidos com o propósito de investigar as respostas fisiológicas e bioquímicas associadas à indução de tolerância de frutos às injúrias de frio, e o envolvimento do etileno e do sistema antioxidante de defesa neste processo. Para isso, bananas Nanicão e limas ácidas Tahiti foram submetidas a tratamentos que estimularam a síntese ou bloquearam a ação do etileno e a tratamentos térmicos. No primeiro e terceiro experimentos, os frutos foram condicionados a 37°C por 10 horas, ou imersos em água a 45°C por 15 minutos ou a 53°C por 2 minutos, antes do armazenamento a 1°C (lima ácida) ou 6°C (banana). No segundo experimento, limas ácidas foram imersas em soluções contendo 1,0mM de metil jasmonato ou metil salicilato ou expostas a 1000nL L-1 de 1-MCP, antes do armazenamento a 1°C (controle). No quarto experimento, bananas foram expostas ou não (controle) a 1000nL L-1 de 1-MCP antes do armazenamento a 6°C. A temperatura e o tempo de exposição dos frutos aos tratamentos com calor influenciaram diretamente a geração e o acúmulo de radicais livres nos tecidos, o que repercutiu em diferente indução de tolerância à baixa temperatura. A aplicação de tratamentos térmicos moderados reduziu a sensibilidade dos tecidos ao etileno, promoveu maior manutenção da estabilidade das membranas, e resultou em menores índices de injúrias de frio ao final do armazenamento de ambos os frutos estudados. Entretanto, ficou evidente que, no caso da banana, a tolerância induzida pelos tratamentos térmicos é temporária, restringindo-se a poucos dias após a exposição à refrigeração. O estresse desencadeado pelo condicionamento dos frutos a 37°C por 10 horas foi severo, pois aumentou a geração de espécies reativas de oxigênio nos tecidos, favorecendo a antecipação do desenvolvimento das injúrias de frio em ambos os frutos. O tratamento da lima ácida com 1,0mM de metil jasmonato ou metil salicilato elevou, consideravelmente, a atividade das enzimas antioxidantes presentes no flavedo dos frutos e essa maior capacidade de remoção das espécies reativas de oxigênio foi acompanhada de significativa redução na incidência de injúrias de frio quando comparada ao controle. Adicionalmente, na lima ácida, o bloqueio da ação do etileno não suprimiu a sua evolução durante o armazenamento, consequentemente, a presença deste etileno residual reduziu a capacidade de remoção do peróxido de hidrogênio do flavedo dos frutos. Em contraste, a inibição da percepção do etileno e a supressão da evolução de sua síntese durante o armazenamento da banana foi responsável pela redução da sensibilidade dos frutos às injúrias de frio. A associação entre baixa temperatura e etileno favoreceu o estresse oxidativo, pois reduziu a capacidade de remoção de espécies reativas de oxigênio, induzindo eventos ligados à degradação das membranas celulares. Em suma, a efetividade dos tratamentos avaliados em induzir aos frutos tolerância ao frio está ligada não apenas ao estresse oxidativo, mas também a outros fatores como a presença do etileno no tecido. Possivelmente, a interação desses fatores com a baixa temperatura seja determinante na modulação da resposta requerida para promover maior ou menor tolerância ao frio. / Experiments were performed with the purpose to investigate physiological and biochemical responses associated to induction of fruit tolerance to chilling injury and the involvement of ethylene and antioxidant defense system in this process. Nanicão banana and Tahiti lime fruit were submitted to treatments to stimulate or to inhibit ethylene action and heat treatments. In the first and the third experiments, the fruit were conditioned at 37°C for 10 hours or hot water dipped at 45°C for 15 minutes or 53°C for 2 minutes before storage at 1°C (lime) or 6°C (banana). In the second experiment, Tahiti lime fruit were immersed in solutions containing 1.0mM methyl jasmonate or 1.0mM methyl salicylate or treated with 1000nL L-1 1-MCP, before storage at 1°C (control). In the fourth experiment, banana fruit were treated or not (control) with 1000nL L-1 1-MCP before storage at 6°C. The temperature and exposition time of fruit to heat treatments influences the free radical generation and accumulation in the tissues, causing differential induction of chilling tolerance. The fruit exposure to moderate heat treatments decreased the tissue sensitivity to ethylene, maintained membrane stability and resulting in the lower chilling injury index at the end of storage in both fruit. Nevertheless, it was clear that in the case of banana fruit, the heat-induced tolerance is temporary, and is restricted to few days after the cold exposure. The pre storage conditioning of fruit at 37°C for 10 hours trigger a severe stress, since it increased the generation of reactive oxygen species in the tissues favoring the earlier development of chilling injury symptoms in both fruit. There was a considerable increase in the activity of antioxidant enzymes in the flavedo of lime fruit treated with 1.0mM methyl jasmonate or 1.0mM methyl salicylate and this elevation on capacity to scavenge the reactive oxygen species was accompanied by significant decrease in the chilling injury incidence when compared to control fruit. In addition, in lime fruit, the ethylene perception inhibitor 1-MCP did not suppress the ethylene evolution during storage period; consequently, this residual ethylene did reduce the flavedo tissue capacity to scavenge hydrogen peroxide. On the contrary, the ethylene perception inhibition and the suppression of synthesis evolution during storage of banana fruit reduce the sensitivity of fruit to chilling injuries. The combination between low temperature and ethylene favors the oxidative stress, given that did decrease the capacity to scavenge the reactive oxygen species, which induces membrane deterioration events. In conclusion, the treatment effectiveness to induce cold tolerance to fruit was related not only to oxidative stress but also to other factors as ethylene in the tissue. Probably, the interaction of these factors with low temperature may be determinant in the modulation of response required to promote high or low chilling tolerance.
