Lina e Lucio / Lina and Lucio

Suzuki, Marcelo 14 June 2010 (has links)
Lina Bo Bardi and Lucio Costa were brazilian important intelectual-architects of the 20th century. Their pathways, very differents in their principles and in their causes, have a lot in common on their effects. Relating the importance of their public actions in all the aspects concerning intelligence and architecture have been the object of lots of new researches, with renewed interest. In this aspect, we present our version of their actions, developed in art and in technique - antique or modern -, in political and social foreground, in everyday life and urban life, and, to say one word, architecture. The intention is to locate and identify the differences and the common points of actions in their trajectories and also make comments concerning what was happening among them or in spite of them. In their history context, the adventures and, most of all, the discontentments that they have been through - and they were many. But they reacted and carried on. The impassioned intelligence together with the cheer to labor on is impressive. The chapters that are named by specific works tend to be a bit zig-zagging. They jump from works to facts in the attemp to explain technical processes and historical facts in which this works are inserted.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Celia Regina Trindade Chagas Amorim.pdf: 55739492 bytes, checksum: f3ccf33de1f819555df1a55ca3454db0 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2008-06-09 / Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico / This work is entitled Jornal Pessoal: a journalistic metalanguage in the Amazon. The object studied is the alternative journal of the sociologist and journalist Lúcio Flávio Pinto. The periodical has been released for 20 years, in Belém, state of Pará. The hypothesis examined is that the journal presents journalistic metalanguage based in the principles of street journalism truth, ethic and liberty as well as of its practice. The generator problem of this investigation arose from the following question: why turning to the study of journalistic metalanguage through an alternative journal if the general press, considered as a journalism paradigm, contains metalinguistic elements? The main objective is to reflect on the importance of alternative media in the process of construction of a journalism effectively committed to society. The theoretical and interpretative basis involved the concept of metalanguage, a second language which analyses the first one, the object language. The theorists studies in the international field like Habermas, John Downing, Carnap, Jakobson, Barthes, Jesús Martín-Barbero and Nelson Traquina, besides Brazilian researchers like Bernardo Kucinski, Ciro Marcondes Filho, Perseu Abramo and Nelson Werneck Sodré were fundamental to explain, in the light of the communication theories, the press language and history, the phases and the proposed objectives. The methodology followed a qualitativedescriptive analysis of the periodical production, mainly the one emphasizing the journalistic language in its 20 years existence. From the 400 editions published, 40 were selected, that is, 10% of each group of 100 samples were extracted, in order to design a profile of the metajournalism of the Jornal Pessoal. This work is also included in the Communication area, a Journalism subfield, more specifically related to alternative media. At present, this expression has been more used in the researchers meetings in Brazil and abroad due to the possibility to shelter several alternative objects. The results achieved are relevant to the Communication field, once they present a new perspective to the alternative media, which must be free of prejudices as to associate those means to a minor, marginal, type of press. They also show the need of studies emphasizing the history of the press aiming at understanding the transformation process through which the journalistic production passed in the capitalism context, and finally, the singularity of this PhD research which was to examine, through the journalistic metalanguage expressed by an alternative journal, the excessive ethic nature deviations in the great Amazon press, mainly in Belém, state of Pará, which compromise the consolidation of a journalism concerned with the citizen / Este trabalho tem como título Jornal Pessoal: uma metalinguagem jornalística na Amazônia. O objeto estudado é o jornal alternativo do sociólogo e jornalista Lúcio Flávio Pinto.

From hope to regret : the Populist Imaginary of Ecuadors Lucio Gutiérrez

Veitch, Lindell Lorne 09 December 2009
Framed within a discussion of populism, this thesis provides a critical analysis of the campaign and short tenure in office of Ecuadorian President Lucio Gutiérrez Borbúa. It outlines a multi-dimensional approach to populism that is characterized by five components: (1) personalistic leadership, (2) a heterogeneous coalition of support, (3) top-down political mobilization, (4) an ambiguous ideological discourse, and (5) a redistributive and clientelistic economic approach. Applied to the Gutiérrez case, the multi-dimensional approach highlights the viability and volatility of populism.<p> This thesis argues that Gutiérrez ascended to the presidency through the successful application of a populist strategy, which generated significant expectations among the public and his political allies. Yet, once in office, Gutiérrez populist strategy was unable to sustain the support he enjoyed during the campaign. The expectations he generated went unmet as he engaged in clear reversals of the populist imaginary created by his candidacy. His twenty-eight months in office were characterized by neoliberalism, corruption, and status quo political machinations that had sunk his predecessors. Tracking Gutiérrez transition from populist champion to political pariah using the multi-dimensional approach indicates that although populism can be an effective electoral strategy, it can also impose significant limitations on a government. Ultimately, the Gutiérrez case reinforces the important role played by the populist imaginary in determining the success or failure of populist leaders.

Depicting Affect through Text, Music, and Gesture in Venetian Opera, c. 1640-1658

Hagen, Emily 05 1900 (has links)
Although early Venetian operas by composers such as Claudio Monteverdi and Francesco Cavalli offer today's listeners profound moments of emotion, the complex codes of meaning connecting emotion (or affect) with music in this repertoire are different from those of later seventeenth-century operatic repertoire. The specific textual and musical markers that librettists and composers used to indicate individual emotions in these operas were historically and culturally contingent, and many scholars thus consider them to be inaccessible to listeners today. This dissertation demonstrates a new analytical framework that is designed to identify the specific combinations of elements that communicate each lifelike emotion in this repertoire. Re-establishing the codes that govern the relationship between text, musical sound, and affect in this repertoire illuminates the nuanced emotional language of operas by composers such as Claudio Monteverdi, Francesco Cavalli, Antonio Cesti, and Francesco Lucio. The new analytical framework that underlies this study derives from analysis of seventeenth-century Venetian explanations and depictions of emotional processes, which reveal a basis in their society's underlying Aristotelian philosophy. Chapters III and IV examine extant documents from opera librettists, composers, audience members, and their associates to reveal how they understood emotions to work in the mind and body. These authors, many of whom were educated by Aristotelian scholars at the nearby University of Padua, understood action and emotion to be bound together in a reciprocal, causal relationship, and this synthesis was reflected in the way that they depicted affect in opera. It also guided the ways that singer-actors performed and audiences interpreted this music. In contrast, post-1660 Baroque operas from France and Italy express affect according to the musical conventions of the Doctrine of Affections (based in the ideas of René Descartes) and aim to present a single, clear emotion for each large semantic unit (recitative or aria). This paradigm does not hold true for operas composed before 1660; thus, this vibrant repertoire requires a new analytical approach that respects its pre-Cartesian musical aesthetics. Early Venetian opera composers express not just one, but many affects in each semantic unit. In their operas, musical sound interacts directly with text and dramatic action on a line-by-line basis to produce an unprecedented fluidity of emotional meaning. Chapter II describes a new analytical framework based in this understanding to reveal the means that librettists, composers, and performers used to communicate emotion in this repertoire. Chapters V through X contain hermeneutic and musical analyses (according to the method described in Chapter II) of case studies drawn from Venetian operas performed between 1640 and 1658. These chapters illustrate how this repertoire uses a flexible but well-defined system of musical and textual markers to convey characters' emotions. This new approach unlocks an aesthetic system that privileges the fluid, real-time emotional reactions of the individual in accordance with Aristotelian emotional understanding. In Chapters XI and XII, supporting information gleaned from seventeenth-century acting treatises, reception documents, and conduct books enables an examination of the singer's role in depicting these textual and musical representations of affect in performance. These two chapters address seventeenth-century views on affective communication through voice acting and physical gesture, together with recommendations for today's singers who perform this repertoire. In taking a systematic approach to the identification of specific textual, musical, and gestural means for communicating affect in early Venetian opera, this dissertation offers a new approach to analyzing and performing its dynamic emotional content.

Rivera Rodriguez, Kevin Aarom 26 September 2024 (has links)
