Preferences of packaged tours : a study of tourists in the Mahikeng area.

Mokabe, Mamotse. January 2013 (has links)
M. Tech. Tourism and Hospitality Management / The focus of this study was to determine tourists' preferences of the content of packaged tours in the Mahikeng area. Packaged tours are designed without really knowing whether such tours will be purchased. The preferences of tourists differ in terms of all the components of tourism incorporated into packaged tours. Preferences can be influenced by the reasons of travelling. Tour operators play a significant role in designing and selling tourism packages. It is therefore crucial for them to recognise the preferences of current and potential customers. Knowing tourists' preferences before crafting tour packages will enable tour operators to save money and will also contribute to the successful selling of packaged tours.

The Grootfontein aquifer at Mahikeng, South Africa as hydro-social system

Cobbing, Jude Edmund January 2017 (has links)
The Grootfontein aquifer is located about 20 km south east of Mahikeng, North West Province, South Africa, and currently supplies about 20% of Mahikeng’s water. Formed in weathered Malmani Subgroup dolomites, the aquifer contains good quality groundwater that could potentially supply more of Mahikeng’s water, as well as provide a strategic reserve of water for use during droughts. Over-abstraction of groundwater from the aquifer, mainly by irrigating farmers but also by the boreholes supplying Mahikeng, has caused the natural groundwater level to drop at a rate of about 0.4 m per year since the 1970s, leading to water level declines of as much as 28 m in parts of the aquifer. Although the Grootfontein aquifer is one of the best studied aquifers in South Africa hydrogeologically, efforts to address these declines since the 1970s have largely failed. This research combines hydrogeological evidence with social research (interviews and participant-observation) and the principles of Earth Stewardship Science to argue that the aquifer functions as a hydro-social system, and that institutional characteristics are the root cause of a collective inability to restore the aquifer to its full potential as a water resource. A sub-optimal and undesirable Nash equilibrium prevails, in which major groundwater users are unable or unwilling to reduce abstraction. The situation has significant cost and risk implications for the environmental, economic and social sectors, and contributes to insecurity, pessimism, inequality and mistrust. An effective local forum with appropriate powers, supported and mandated by the Department of Water and Sanitation, is needed to begin the work of dismantling the sub-optimal equilibrium to realise the potential of the Grootfontein aquifer. Such a forum would require a shared understanding of the hydrogeological mechanisms of the aquifer as well as its social and institutional functioning, since these influence each other in complex ways.

Causes and effects of non-payment of residential property rates in Mahikeng

Asianoah, Rexford Kofi January 2014 (has links)
One of the major sources of income to South African Municipalities is property rates. Income generated from property rates is meant to develop and deliver services to residents living in the said Municipal area. The main aim of the research was to identify the causes and effects of the non-payment of residential property rates, and also to develop workable strategies to maximise the collection of residential property rates in order to ensure developmental growth sustenance, specifically in Mahikeng Municipal area. Related literature was reviewed on the non-financial viability of Municipalities, maintenance of public infrastructure, service delivery and Municipal development plans in establishing the relationship with non-payment of residential property rates. Four hypotheses were set to guide the research with two testing positive with high level of confidence using the chi square method of testing. The research methodology employed in the research was mainly quantitative where the results and findings obtained from the questionnaire were statistically analysed. The research revealed that: The Mahikeng Local Municipality has failed to find the right medium to send rates bills to clients on time, is not taking active responsibility to recover rates debts, does not provide quality service delivery and the reluctance by locals to pay their property rates. The effects thereof, are the inability of the Municipality to deliver effective and efficient services, lack of maintenance of public infrastructure and development in the area. By implementing various options such as email, sms and the post to send rates bills to property owners, by employing different payment options, for example debit orders, transfers, bank deposits and discounts for property owners and embarking on periodic public awareness campaigns in educating the community regarding the importance of payment of property rates could serve as effective mechanisms to address the non-payment of residential property rates faced by the Mahikeng Local Municipality.

Consumer debt level of the Department of Health public servants in Mahikeng

Moaisi, Lesolobe Patrick 08 May 2014 (has links)
Studies as described in the literature review indicate that most South Africans are highly in debt. The South African Reserve Bank’s quarterly bulletin is one of the prominent barometers for measuring household debt in the country and over the last five years has been indicating a steady decline but still very high household debt among South Africans. Studies have also shown that this relates to poor financial literacy and consumer ignorance in applying basic financial management practices. This is discussed in Chapter two of the study. The aim of the study was to determine the consumer debt level of the Department of Health public servants in Mahikeng, North West Province. This study used a consumer survey to measure consumer indebtedness among public servants in Mahikeng. The results of the study support literature in that the study found that most public servants are indebted. The findings also showed that 63% of the public servants spent more than 20% of their income in servicing debt. Thirteen per cent of the public servants taking part in the study had been served with either garnishee or emolument orders. The results of the study seem to suggest that public servants working for the Department of Health in Mahikeng and taking part in the study were indebted. / Business Management / M. Com. Guidelines for management of post traumatic stress disorder among South African police service workers in Mahikeng, North West Province of South Africa

Maabela, Shirley Mmapula 02 1900 (has links)
Text in English / Police workers have to contend with a variety of traumatic incidents in their daily work. This includes work, personal and socio-economic stressors. These, if not managed, may lead to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The aim of this study was to develop guidelines to assist the South African Police Service (SAPS) organisation to provide appropriate interventions for workers diagnosed with work and non-work-related PTSD in the Mahikeng area of the North West Province in South Africa. The study further sought to assist the workers’ immediate family members to cope with living with a member diagnosed with PTSD. A qualitative research method was used. Data was collected using self-administered in-depth interviews. The study sample comprised of 19 SAPS workers and 23 family members. Data was analysed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20.0. The Excel computer program was used to identify and analyse common themes. A lower PTSD prevalence rate of 0.76% was yielded by the results. Work-related traumatic incidents were linked to possible PTSD development for most SAPS workers. Exposure to traumatic incidents might have had a substantial effect on participants’ health and social lives as most developed varying health conditions post to the PTSD diagnosis. Living with a member diagnosed with PTSD brought trauma, financial problems and constant worry among families. Families coped by supporting each other. The provision of counseling services and active participation in PTSD support groups and sport activities were identified by most participants as fundamental in coping with the effects of PTSD. The provision of sufficient integrated family counseling and life skills programmes by the SAPS organisation was identified as crucial by most families in coping with the effects of living with a member diagnosed with PTSD. / Health Studies / D. High school learners' perceptions of accounting as a career path in the Mafikeng area

Oben, James Ako 02 1900 (has links)
Summaries in English, Afrikaans and Setswana / The study was prompted by the decline in accounting enrolments and the ongoing criticism due to learners’ poor performance in the Accounting subject in South Africa. Given the increasing need for accounting graduates and, more importantly, qualified accounting professionals, this study investigated the preconceived perceptions participating high school learners in selected schools in the Mafikeng area had about the accounting profession at the time of this study. The study drew on a rich body of existing literature and adopted the social cognitive career theory of Lent, Brown and Hackett (1994) to explore the factors influencing career interests of learners in accounting as a career path. A quantitative research approach with a survey questionnaire, framed within a positivist paradigm, was used to elicit opinions from learners. The findings revealed that work satisfaction, earnings potential, self-efficacy, personal interest, offering Accounting as a subject and having an accountant in the family are among the factors that significantly influenced participating learners’ career interests in accounting / Die studie is aangespoor deur die afname in rekeningkunde-inskrywings en die deurlopende kritiek van leerders se swak prestasie in rekeningkunde in Suid-Afrika. / Thutopatlisiso e tlhotlheleditswe ke kwelotlase ya ikwadiso ya dithuto tsa Palotlotlo le go kgalwa go go tswelelang pele ga tiragatso e e bokoa ya barutwana mo Palotlotlong mo Aforikaborwa.
