Application of Fast Marching Method in Shale Gas Reservoir Model CalibrationYang, Changdong 16 December 2013 (has links)
Unconventional reservoirs are typically characterized by very low permeabilities, and thus, the pressure depletion from a producing well may not propagate far from the well during the life of a development. Currently, two approaches are widely utilized to perform unconventional reservoir analysis: analytical techniques, including the decline curve analysis and the pressure/rate transient analysis, and numerical simulation. The numerical simulation can rigorously account for complex well geometry and reservoir heterogeneity but also is time consuming. In this thesis, we propose and apply an efficient technique, fast marching method (FMM), to analyze the shale gas reservoirs.
Our proposed approach stands midway between analytic techniques and numerical simulation. In contrast to analytical techniques, it takes into account complex well geometry and reservoir heterogeneity, and it is less time consuming compared to numerical simulation. The fast marching method can efficiently provide us with the solution of the pressure front propagation equation, which can be expressed as an Eikonal equation. Our approach is based on the generalization of the concept of depth of investigation. Its application to unconventional reservoirs can provide the understanding necessary to describe and optimize the interaction between complex multi-stage fractured wells, reservoir heterogeneity, drainage volumes, pressure depletion, and well rates. The proposed method allows rapid approximation of reservoir simulation results without resorting to detailed flow simulation, and also provides the time-evolution of the well drainage volume for visualization.
Calibration of reservoir models to match historical dynamic data is necessary to increase confidence in simulation models and also minimize risks in decision making. In this thesis, we propose an integrated workflow: applying the genetic algorithm (GA) to calibrate the model parameters, and utilizing the fast marching based approach for forward simulation. This workflow takes advantages of both the derivative free characteristics of GA and the speed of FMM. In addition, we also provide a novel approach to incorporate the micro-seismic events (if available) into our history matching workflow so as to further constrain and better calibrate our models.

Applications of Level Set and Fast Marching Methods in Reservoir CharacterizationXie, Jiang 2012 August 1900 (has links)
Reservoir characterization is one of the most important problems in petroleum engineering. It involves forward reservoir modeling that predicts the fluid behavior in the reservoir and inverse problem that calibrates created reservoir models with given data. In this dissertation, we focus on two problems in the field of reservoir characterization: depth of investigation in heterogeneous reservoirs, and history matching and uncertainty quantification of channelized reservoirs.
The concept of depth of investigation is fundamental to well test analysis. Much of the current well test analysis relies on analytical solutions based on homogeneous or layered reservoirs. However, such analytic solutions are severely limited for heterogeneous and fractured reservoirs, particularly for unconventional reservoirs with multistage hydraulic fractures. We first generalize the concept to heterogeneous reservoirs and provide an efficient tool to calculate drainage volume using fast marching methods and estimate pressure depletion based on geometric pressure approximation. The applicability of proposed method is illustrated using two applications in unconventional reservoirs including flow regime visualization and stimulated reservoir volume estimation.
Due to high permeability contrast and non-Gaussianity of channelized permeability field, it is difficult to history match and quantify uncertainty of channelized reservoirs using traditional approaches. We treat facies boundaries as level set functions and solve the moving boundary problem (history matching) with the level set equation. In addition to level set methods, we also exploit the problem using pixel based approach. The reversible jump Markov Chain Monte Carlo approach is utilized to search the parameter space with flexible dimensions. Both proposed approaches are demonstrated with two and three dimensional examples.

A Smoothing Algorithm for the Dual Marching Tetrahedra MethodJanuary 2011 (has links)
abstract: The Dual Marching Tetrahedra algorithm is a generalization of the Dual Marching Cubes algorithm, used to build a boundary surface around points which have been assigned a particular scalar density value, such as the data produced by and Magnetic Resonance Imaging or Computed Tomography scanner. This boundary acts as a skin between points which are determined to be "inside" and "outside" of an object. However, the DMT is vague in regards to exactly where each vertex of the boundary should be placed, which will not necessarily produce smooth results. Mesh smoothing algorithms which ignore the DMT data structures may distort the output mesh so that it could incorrectly include or exclude density points. Thus, an algorithm is presented here which is designed to smooth the output mesh, while obeying the underlying data structures of the DMT algorithm. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.S. Computer Science 2011

Motivational and Social Network Dynamics of Ensemble Music Making: A Longitudinal Investigation of a Collegiate Marching BandJanuary 2015 (has links)
abstract: People are motivated to participate in musical activities for many reasons. Whereas musicians may be driven by an intrinsic desire for musical growth, self-determination theory suggests that this drive must also be sustained and supported by the social environment. Social network analysis is an interdisciplinary theoretical framework and collection of analytical methods that allows us to describe the social context of a musical ensemble. These frameworks are utilized to investigate the relationship of participatory motivation and social networks in a large Division I collegiate marching band. This study concludes that marching band members are predominantly self-determined to participate in marching band and are particularly motivated for social reasons, regardless of their experience over the course of the band season. The members who are highly motived are also more integrated into the band's friendship and advice networks. These highly integrated members also tend to be motivated by the value and importance others display for the marching band activity suggesting these members have begun to internalized those values and seek out others with similar viewpoints. These findings highlight the central nature of the social experience of marching band and have possible implications for other musical leisure ensembles. After a brief review of social music making and the theoretical frameworks, I will provide illustrations of the relationship between motivation and social networks in a musical ensemble, consider the implications of these findings for promoting self-determined motivation and the wellbeing of musical ensembles, and identify directions for future research. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Music 2015

Previous issue date: 2009-03-14 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The purpose of this paper is to report and analyze the concepts of the teachers about musical education and the teaching and learning processes applied at the Projeto de Bandas e Fanfarras de São José SC. A bibliography about musical education in musical bands was used and the theoretical reference adopted can be found in the pedagogical trends synthesized by Libâneo (1994). Three qualitative case studies were performed, and the research techniques used were observation, semi-structured interviews and questionnaires. From the analysis, one might observe that a few concepts of teachers on musical education are effectively the pedagogical practices. The musical teaching and learning processes vary according to each teacher s approach, who can use many different pedagogies even though they are not aware of the theories. The results also show the importance of the Bands and Fanfares Project in the life of participating children and young adults, providing a more complete formation as citizens. Furthermore, the possible contributions of this research to musical education are also presented on it / O presente trabalho teve como objetivo registrar e analisar as concepções dos professores sobre educação musical e os processos de ensino e aprendizagem de música realizados no Projeto de Bandas e Fanfarras de São José - SC.

Physiological and psychophysical responses of male soldiers to changes in marching gradient, speed and loadTodd, Andrew Ivan January 2002 (has links)
The present study sought to investigate the effects of changes in gradient, under apparently optimal combinations of speed and load, on selected physiological, psychophysical and biophysical responses of military personnel. Subjects (n = 32) were required to march under level (0%), downhill (-10%) and uphill (+10%) conditions. Under each gradient, subjects marched with the following speed-load combinations: 4 km.h-1 carrying 50 kg, 5 km.h-1 carrying 35 kg and 6 km.h-1 carrying 20 kg, a total of nine experimental conditions. Subjects were required to march for six minutes under each condition. Physiological responses (HR, VO2, R, Br, VE, VT, EE) indicated that subjects were not overly taxed by the three speed-load combinations during level marching, which elicited submaximal demands. Furthermore, the results revealed that downhill marching with heavy loads results in similar responses to level marching, while lighter loads may result in significant reductions in physical demands compared to level marching. The physiological responses to uphill marching revealed that subjects were severely physically taxed under these conditions, regardless of speed-load combination. It is unlikely that soldiers would be able to maintain these intensities for an extended period without undue fatigue. It is evident from the psychophysical responses (Rating of Perceived Exertion and Body Discomfort) that subjects perceived the heavy load conditions, regardless of gradient, to be the most stressful on the cardiovascular and muscular systems. The positive gradient conditions also elicited elevated RPE and Body Discomfort responses, while lighter load downhill conditions were perceived to result in the least strain.
