Application of mobile and Internet technologies for the investigation of human relationships with soundscapes

Mydlarz, C. A. January 2013 (has links)
This thesis presents a methodology for soundscape research, utilising consumer mobile and internet technologies. This has been used to gather objective environmental data, as well as subjective data from participants in-situ. A total of 323 untrained members of the public have submitted soundscape recordings from around the world. For the first time, participant choice has been factored into soundscape research, where members of the public decide which sound environments are investigated. Human relationships with their sound environments have been investigated, with a number of findings corresponding with those of other studies utilising entirely different methodologies. In addition, a number of new findings have been made to contribute to the field. The two extracted subjective principal components of ’Appreciation’ and ’Dynamics’ has shown a solid validation of the project’s methodology, due to their similarities with a number of other studies utilising different techniques of data retrieval. The distinctive groupings of the different soundscape types within this factor space defined by the extracted components reveals the perceptual differences between the soundscape categories: urban, rural, urban public space and urban park. The activity a person is involved in while making their submission has shown to be influential in soundscape appraisal, with relaxation and recreation situations resulting in increased soundscape appreciation. The reasons behind a soundscape submission have revealed significant differences in subjective response. The positive interpretation of the term soundscape has resulted in a majority of positive reasons for participation. Soundscapes that arise from a participant’s daily routine are generally less appreciated than soundscapes containing a particular sound source focus. The highest levels of appreciation were observed in soundscapes whose focus is on a specific activity that the participant is involved in. The interest that a participant has on their soundscape is seen to result in raised levels of appreciation.

Učitelé a mediální výchova

TRNKOVÁ, Denisa January 2019 (has links)
This thesis deals with the issue of media education and teachers who teach the class. The first part of the thesis is devoted to a theoretical definition of the cross-curricular theme of media education, its historical development and the gradual establishment of the topic in Czech curriculum and the subsequent introduction into schools in the form of a cross-sectional topic that concerns grammar schools and not only them. Attention is paid to textbooks, publications and Internet links and courses available to teachers. Part of the attention is devoted to the latest research on this topic. The research part of the thesis presents the results of my qualitative research, which outlines patterns of approaches, opinions and attitudes of media education teachers at selected grammar schools in South Bohemia. The thesis deals with the question of who are the teachers, who teach media education, whether they are already prepared for this topic from the university, or whether they had to educate themselves and what are their most frequent approvals. Only recent university graduates, unlike their older colleagues, have had the opportunity to become acquainted with media education in their higher education. Their older colleagues did not have it so easy and had to deal with this task and topic during their teaching. There are different views on media education among young and senior teachers. As a rule, every young teacher is enthusiastic and positively perceives the importance of media education.

News usage practices of Pakistani university students in the networked media environment

Nauman, Saadia Ishtiaq January 2017 (has links)
This thesis aims to examine the News Usage practices of young Pakistani university students in the networked news media environment. The development of internet and its subsequent technologies have played a significant role in the transition from Mass Media towards Networked Media and this transition has directly influenced news usage practices. In Pakistan, almost 99% of the sample population of this research has mobile phones. The introduction of 3G and 4G mobile technologies in 2014 and recent ICT policy initiatives suggests that there are plans to subsidize smart phones in the country, which will further boost the digital environment. The news users in Pakistan now have more choices to follow news from multiple platforms and via multiple devices. There is a networked media ecosystem around users and it is continuously evolving and consequently transforming the news media institutions and the users’ news usage experience. The practice of using news is changing and transforming the user’s news usage experience but the available theoretical framework did not adequately address this, until the emergence of the ‘Theory of Mediatization’. The four main contributors to mediatization theory have been Lundby (2014) Hepp (2009), Hjarvard, (2008), Couldry (2008) and Krotz (2007) .Building on their contribution, and including the valuable addition by Winfried Schulz (2004), I am applying the framework of mediatization to a cohort of university students in Pakistan to investigate their changing news usage practices in the networked media environment. I have adopted a mixed method approach, following the double sequential loops method.

Communicating Participatory Budgeting : Insights from Makueni County in Kenya

Hussein, Elmi January 2023 (has links)
Kenya's 2010 Constitution marked a significant shift towards decentralised governance and public participation as key drivers of sustainable development (Finch and Omolo, 2015). One of the primary strategies county governments employ to achieve this goal is participatory budgeting (PB), which empowers communities and devolves power to support inclusive and equitable development. Through the Communication for Development lens, this thesis investigates the discourse surrounding participatory budgeting in Makueni County, Kenya. The study examines the communication approaches the county government applies to promote public participation, explores the role of participatory communication in facilitating public engagement in PB, and assesses the inclusivity of participatory approaches. Additionally, the research delves into the opportunities and challenges of integrating digital tools into participatory communication for PB. This aspect of the study is particularly relevant in today's digital age, where digital communication tools have become an essential aspect of communication. The thesis also considers power dynamics, social context, and the appropriate use of digital tools to foster a participatory and inclusive approach for PB.The data collection methods to dissect the research topic included semi-structured, in-depth interviews with Makueni County officials and a focus group discussion with civil society and community members. The findings of this research reveal Makueni County has public participation approach that enjoys strong government backing and efforts to institutionalise PB within the county devolution governance. The county communication approach blends participatory and top-down strategies, dominated by a monologic, one-way flow of information. However, a participatory aspect is also present, facilitated by traditional community platforms and community mobilisation through media and digital tools. While digital platforms are employed, restricted internet coverage and a digital divide hinder their effectiveness. The findings also identify limited youth and civil society participation in the communication approaches further hinder inclusive participation in the PB processes. Despite these challenges, the study suggests that Makueni County's approach is promising for participatory communication. However, to achieve a truly participatory communication approach, the county government needs to refine its communication approach to enhance inclusivity and leverage digital tools to foster effective public participation. This could cultivate transparent, accountable, and participatory communication strategies, that could yield sustainable and equitable outcomes in the participatory budgeting initiative.
