STRATEGIES OF DISCONNECTION: A SHORT STORY COLLECTION

Unknown Date (has links)
Strategies of Disconnection is short story collection focusing on memes or rather the intersection of modern internet meme culture, meme theory, and Christianity, capturing the realities of an era of memetic upheaval (in 2016 the search term “Meme” overtook the term “Jesus” in popularity) when the digital and the spiritual seem to overlap, both contending for attention. Memes are culturally analogous to genes, both serving as entities driven toward survival and reproduction. Yet, and entities analogous to genes, memes find themselves contending for survival. These stories inhabit the perspective of memes as characters attempting to acknowledge existence alongside their genetic counterparts: An unnamed creator who falls for Lucy, the first set of hominid bones, an actor who avoids notoriety after having played the role of god, and internet troll Anon, who lives on 4chan. / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (M.F.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2020. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

Sékula, Ricardo José January 2016 (has links)
Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Comunicação e Expressão, Programa de Pós-Graduação em Jornalismo, Florianópolis, 2016. / Made available in DSpace on 2017-04-18T04:20:17Z (GMT). During the 2014 Brazil's electoral period memes have become a usual and fun way to comment on the various events of the political, media and journalism scenes. Serving various interests, they have become mechanisms of attack and defense, to disseminate ideas and information - true or falses - criticism and support the actions and political figures. In this context, it worked for both the polarization of public debate as to subvert the messages. Without ignoring the role of memes in order to propagate hegemonic ideas and stereotypes, this research investigates in what ways they can work as an exercise of counterpower political and media discourse. For this, tenses significant developments of the term "meme" in their co-relationship with concepts of power and counterpower, frame and parody. Memes on electoral debates for the 2014 Republic Presidency held by Rede Globo and the G1, the first and second rounds, are its empirical, totalizing 1,555 memes. Based on the idea of scene (MAINGUENEAU, 2008) and political discourses as masks game (CHARAUDEAU, 2008), it is proposed to build a memetic scenography of the debates, through which its possible to see the sense of deviations proposed by memes in relation to speeches that are based. Beyond the joke, it is observed that their use also pervade the reframing of discourses, the characterization of the actors involved in the process and the holding of new angles of information.

Mathematics in Popular Culture: An Analysis of Mathematical Internet Memes

Benoit, Gregory January 2018 (has links)
Popular culture has had a great deal of impact on our social, cultural, and political worlds; it is portrayed through different mediums, in different forms, and connects the world to ideas, beliefs, and different perspectives. Though this dissertation is part of a larger body of work that examines the complex relationship between popular culture and mathematical identity, this study takes a different perspective by examining it through the lens of mathematical Internet memes. This study was conducted with 31 secondary school participants and used a two-tiered approach (in-depth focus groups and an individual meme activity) at each of the five school sites visited around New York City. Multiple sources of data were used to reveal that students are receiving messages about mathematics from memes in popular culture. In particular, participants described six core themes from the meme inventory: (1) stereotypical views of mathematics; (2) mathematics is too complicated; (3) no effort should be needed in mathematics; (4) mathematics is useless; (5) mathematics is not fun; and (6) sense of accomplishment from mathematics. Participants were also given free rein to create hypothetical mathematics memes. Findings demonstrate that not only are memes being used to depict mathematical stereotypes, thereby reinforcing negative messages, but also support social media practices (liking, commenting, sharing, and creating) that reify negative messages about mathematics with little to no resistance from opposing perspectives. In general, participants described mathematical memes in a specific manner that demonstrates them having influence over students’ mathematical identity but not entirely on the way one may think. Future research implications include explorations of the “new” online mathematical space students are utilizing; to wit, what makes these specific memes go viral? What are common misconceptions? Are commenters learning from their mistakes and other answer responses? Implications for practice include the creation of formal spaces within classrooms and communities for students to debrief their thoughts and sentiments about mathematics, as well as informal opportunities for educators, students, and community members to engage positively about mathematics: because without these interventions the messages found in memes, whether positive or negative, are potentially legitimized through popular culture’s presentations. Moreover, the results of this study also show that students are unaware of the processes and proficiencies of mathematical learning. More specifically, teachers and others must help students understand knowledge is not transmitted by copying notes or that teaching strategies need to account for students being apprehensive to ask questions in a mathematics classroom. Memes can also be used to explore mathematics content, through error analysis and explanation of concepts.

Reír para no sufrir: la pandemia del Coronavirus a través del humor de los memes en el Whatsapp / Laugh not to suffer: the coronavirus pandemic through the humor of memes on Whatsapp

Balarezo-López, Gunther 12 1900 (has links)
One of the most practical and fastest ways to spread messages with humorous content is through the cell phone with the WhatsApp application. Among the most common messages sent are memes, a sarcastic and ironic form of humor from reality. These messages have gone viral during the coronavirus pandemic as a way to face adversity with humor. In this sense, this work aims to describe the memes about the coronavirus that were spread through the cell phone during the days of social confi nement in Peru from March 16th to June 30th, 2020. It was found that people's creative capacity has no limits to express their opinions on the problems that arise. It can be concluded that in the face of the adversity of this disease, one of the ways to deal with it is through humor, to make the problems that arose on a day-to-day basis more bearable.

Memes na internet: entrelaçamentos entre educomunicação, cibercultura e a &#39;zoeira&#39; de estudantes nas redes sociais / O. Memes in the Internet: interlinkages between Educommunication, digital culture and the interaction of young students in social networks

Calixto, Douglas de Oliveira 20 September 2017 (has links)
This work investigated the relationship of young students with memes in digital culture. Appropriated on a large scale by children and adolescents and circulating intensively in social networks, memes became a central element in youth routine. From a field research carried out at the Julio Marcondes Salgado Municipal School, north of the city of São Paulo (Brazil), we developed a qualitative study on the functions of memes -- one of the main narrative expressions on the Internet --, discussing the representations and meanings attributed by the students for these new cultural products. We also present, as part of the results, a proposal of genres and subgenres to categorize how memes works as a language. With a theoretical prism articulated between the studies of Educommunication, cyberculture and youth culture, the objective is to discuss what memes are, how they synthesize the changes in transit in contemporary society and, consequently, the possible unfolding of this new communicational reality to the educational routine.

Memetic analysis consists in extracting from texts and images the memes behind the discourse; in this case, the Mormon discourse. The memetic analysis is preceded by the definition and discussion of the concept of meme, with special attention to the distinction between the concepts of meme and idea, the latter being defined not according to dictionaries, common sense or traditional theories, but according to the theory of memes itself. Distinction is also made between the concepts of viral meme (or mind virus) and non-viral meme. After the memetic analysis, the results are used in order to analyze the conflictional relationship and the rivalry between Mormons and Protestants and to explain the strong growth of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in many parts of the world.

Memetizando e midiatizando: memes como estratégia discursiva evangélica / Memetizando and midiatizando: memes as an evangelical discursive strategy

Regiani, Herivelton 02 February 2017 (has links)
The work takes a communicational approach to internet memes, understanding them as devices that take place in the process of mediatization of society (BRAGA, 2006; FAUSTO NETO, 2008; VERÓN, 2014). It discusses the concept of meme (DAWKINS, 2001) and its theoretical developments, situating it in the context of media ecology (SCOLARI, 2010). It gives special attention to the discursive aspects involved in the production and appropriation of the imagery memes, which are re-signified through operations that involve frames, dislocations and re-frames (AUMONT, 1993) and that make interdiscursivities (VERÓN, 2004; MAINGUENEAU, 1998). The research examines the appropriation of internet memes in the Protestant religious field, in pages that call themselves evangelical humor. It investigates how the appropriation of this discursive mechanism of contemporary communication is articulated in the process of mediatization of religion. The main objective is to identify the discursive strategies constructed through these memes, in order to contribute to the understanding of the changes and tendencies in the religious field in its relation with the secular world from its interfaces with the media field. For this purpose, a multiple case study (YIN, 2005) is done, analyzing memes in three pages chosen from the identification of reading contracts (VERÓN, 2004; FAUSTO NETO, 2007) that hold similarities and also singularities. In an analysis of the discourses from the perspective of Verón (2004), the work also elucidates the effects of sense that are produced through memes as devices of enunciation in virtual religious environments and the interactions of the religious and mediatic fields in the environment of social networks.

Brace yourselves, memes are coming : formação e divulgação de uma cultura de resistência através de imagens da internet / Brace yourselves, memes are coming : creation and dissemination of a culture of resistance through internet images

Coelho, André Luis Portes Ferreira, 1985- 26 August 2018 (has links)
Orientador: Cristiane Pereira Dias / Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Estudos da Linguagem / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-26T07:09:05Z (GMT). This dissertation aims to approach the use of Internet images, known as "memes", seeking to understand their effects as elements of cultural propagation. These memes, increasingly present in the virtual environment and in social network feeds, present themselves as a growing tendency not only in humorous and relaxed contexts, but also as a discourse of resistance as opposed to the current social discourse, with subcultures negotiating meanings through images. By analyzing the subjects of language and their conditions of production, we can understand the meanings generated by the "memes" spread throughout the Internet, and their process of resistant cultural propagation. A digital counterculture? We will thus seek to analyze the process of creation, alteration and replication of these images, using as tool the French school of discourse analysis, represented by authors such as Pêcheux and Eni Orlandi, thereby trying to perceive their possibilities as elements of cultural propagation. This will be done initially by analyzing an image feed known as "9gag.com", a social network in which users post, vote comment and share their favorite memes and images; and also a previously selected corpus primarily comprised of images related to the July 2013 popular protests. By combining these two sources, we create a corpus of images to proceed with the discourse analysis of words, discourses, and the subject position of the site users, memes and also the meanings created by the "nerd" subculture itself and its role in resistance discourses in the virtual environment / Mestrado / Divulgação Científica e Cultural / Mestre em Divulgação Científica e Cultural
