Merell, Filip, Nieuwenhuizen, Lysanna January 2024 (has links)
Many studies on intimate partner violence often focus on men as perpetrators and women as victims, but this study shifts the focus to men's experiences of being victims of violence. Using the theories of stigma, masculinity, and script theory, the authors aimed to address the study's purpose, which was to investigate how men articulate their experiences of violence in close relationships. Additionally, the study explored the strategies employed by professionals working with abused men to effectively counteract the stigma associated with the challenges posed by ideals of masculinity. A qualitative approach was employed, involving the analysis of self-narratives from podcasts where abused men shared their experiences. Simultaneously, two interviews were conducted with welfare professionals specializing in assisting abused men, combining primary and secondary data. The authors concluded that the issue described by both men and welfare professionals is highly complex. Stigmatization and societal norms of masculinity present significant obstacles to men being open about their experiences of being victims of violence and seeking help. By fostering awareness of these norms among professionals and adapting support strategies accordingly, conditions are created for abused men to feel validated during the help-seeking and treatment processes.

Marketing, Marginalization, Medicalization, and Motherhood: A Gender Analysis of Health Education Programs Offered to Women and Men

Feeley, Rosemary M. January 2009 (has links)
I used multiple methods to study gender issues associated with health lectures that hospitals offer to the public. My purpose was not to evaluate the health-related content, but rather to study the gender messages that accompanied the health messages. One main reason hospitals offered lectures was to attract clients. While many lectures were offered to both sexes, women's lectures outnumbered men's lectures ten to one. One reason to target women was because hospitals offered more services to women than to men. Yet a main finding is that many women's offerings were not based solely on providing services to benefit women themselves, but also on assumptions about women's caregiving of others. Thus, while men were generally marketed to as men, women were often marketed to as mothers or other caregivers. Most speakers engaged in marginalization: while both men and women lecture attendees were treated in ways that denied their status as competent adults, women were also marginalized as women, that is, treated as "other" to a male norm. Additionally, some speakers presented a single interpretation of procedures or conditions as the only interpretation, despite the fact that other interpretations were equally plausible. Examples included offering positive interpretations of unpleasant screening procedures or treatments; attributing gender roles to biology; and attributing women's stress to personality traits. Medicalization and other forms of boundary blurring between health and other topics occurred more frequently for women than men. While some of this difference did not represent gender inequality, some did, such as gender differences in the emphasis placed on physical appearance. Similarly, while all exhibits showing men's nudity were medically instructive, that is, used to demonstrate anatomy or self-examination procedures, some women's nudity was not medically instructive, and thus unnecessary While some caregiving resources were offered to both sexes, many were offered only to women. Targeting caregiving resources to women went beyond merely reflecting the gendered division of caregiving; it also symbolically reproduced it. Further, when "women's" health resources were intended to benefit children and husbands, the boundary between self and others was blurred for women in a way that had no counterpart for men. / Sociology

Mäns våld mot kvinnor : En litteraturöversikt kring våldets konsekvenser med koppling till normaliseringsprocessen / Men's violence against women : A literature review on the consequences of violence in connection with the normalization process

Eriksson, Emma, Ljungberg, Felicia January 2022 (has links)
The aim is to use a literature review to increase knowledge about how the health and life situation of women exposed to violence are affected by men's violence. The method used for the essay is a literature review where 20 scientific articles have been selected according to relevance in terms of the purpose of the essay, the material has then been carefully categorized by using a thematic analysis. The themes found in the essay are limitations in women’s life situation, social health, mental health, physical health and care visits related to health and life situation. The results indicate that men’s violence against women has devastating consequences for women’s health. Consequences on the mental health that are shown in the results are for instance post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, depression and several other recurring emotions. Furthermore, social health is negatively affected as women who are exposed to partner violence are often isolated due to men’s control, which leads to a reduced social network. Direct injuries and impairments to the body are physical effects of violence that have been shown to be common. There is a great need of care for abused women, but it can also be a difficult process for many to go through. The normalization process is a theory that explains women’s changing images of reality. We have achieved increased knowledge about women’s exposure to violence with help of the normalization process and the collected empirical evidence. The analysis clarifies how women go from having their own control over their lives, to losing it due to men’s power.

Söderlund, Malin January 2024 (has links)

All couples fight sometimes, right? : A scoping review study on why women stay or leave a violent relationship

Martinsdottir, Johanna, Satric, Adina January 2024 (has links)
The purpose of this essay was to compile research on abused women's experiences of which factors influenced their decision to stay or leave a violent relationship, as well as what they think has increased their chances of leaving the relationship. This was answered with the research questions: "Which factors influence whether a woman stays in or leaves a relationship where there is violence?" and "What increases the conditions for leaving a relationship where there is violence?". The scientific articles used for the results were based on qualitative studies that interviewed women who have experienced partner violence and who have either chosen to stay in or leave the relationship. A literature analysis was used to analyze the results. The theories that have been used are intersectionality and the normalization process, to gain an increased understanding of how these theories affect the process to leave the abusive relationship. The results showed that the decision to stay in or leave the relationship is influenced by, among other things, access to support, their children and what feelings they have about the situation. The results showed that conditions like the woman's financial conditions and the country's laws and norms increased the chance of leaving. The conclusion drawn is that it is highly individual what affects a woman to stay or leave the relationship, but that conditions that increase her opportunity to leave does not necessarily guarantee that the woman chooses to carry out the breakup, since other factors can play a part in her decision.

“A Lifetime of Activism”: doing feminist men’s work from a social justice paradigm

Rosenberg, Isaac 04 October 2017 (has links)
This thesis focuses on the projects and experiences of social justice organizers who place an emphasis on working to address heteropatriarchy and its impacts, work that I call men’s work. In particular, these are organizers who take an intersectional, social justice approach to this work. In order to recognize who organizers are and the kinds of projects they engage in, I describe four major project themes within men’s work and briefly explore their potentials and pitfalls according to those who are involved in them. I then analyze a number of the various considerations, tensions, and difficulties that arise for these organizers, particularly the personal and interpersonal components. In order to support organizers to be resilient and successful when faced with these issues, I conclude by sharing a variety of ways they may choose to navigate the various complexities they encounter in their organizing and in their communities. / Graduate
