Caractérisation et modélisation du comportement mécanique des tissus conjonctifs de la paroi abdominale humaine par approche histologiquement fondée / Characterization and histologically-based modeling of the mechanical behavior of connective tissues constituting the human abdominal wallAstruc, Laure 01 April 2019 (has links)
En considérant les paramètres matériau similaires pour tous les individus, le modèle a démontré sa capacité à prédire le comportement mécanique à partir d’informations texturales / Abdominal hernia operations are one of the most common surgeries in the world. However, despite considerable progress, particularly in the development of prosthetic textiles to strengthen the abdominal wall, the recurrence rate remains very high. It therefore appears necessary to develop patient-specific numerical models of the abdominal wall in order to measure and improve the impact of care solutions. The tissues that ensure the cohesion and stability of the abdominal wall are the anterior and posterior rectus sheaths and the linea alba, which are connective tissues. Their particular structure, composed of an intertwining of collagen and elastin fibers, is at the heart of this study. This thesis highlighted the relationship between microscopic architecture and macroscopic behaviour of fibrous tissues. Thanks to experimental campaigns combining mechanical tests and microscopic observations, the structure of tissues has been identified and correlated to mechanical parameters. Three-dimensional image analysis tools have been developed to automatically estimate the anisotropy of a texture. The collected information then led to the development of a hypo-parameterized anisotropic constitutive model. Based on a three-dimensional description of the fibrillary network, the model was written in such a way as to uncorrelate the parameters related to the structure and those related to the nature of the material. By considering similar material parameters for every individual, the model demonstrated its ability to predict mechanical behaviour based on textural information

The design and analysis of a DC SQUID for a SQUID microscopeBurger, Willem Adriaan 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MScEng (Electrical and Electronic Engineering))--Stellenbosch University, 2008. / This thesis relates to the analysis and design of a SQUID microscope. Superconductor theory is discussed
in depth to provide a thorough understanding of Josephson junctions and of dc SQUID magnetometers.
The behaviour and suitability of different types of single-layer dc SQUIDs are looked at. The quality of
the superconducting material patterned onto a substrate and the Josephson junction design used affect
the behaviour of a practical dc SQUID. Noise and cooling play an integral part in the design and operation
of a dc SQUID. The source of noise is looked at in an effort to minimize its effect. Cryocooling is essential
to real world operation so different cooling strategies and their consequences are analyzed. This thesis
focuses on modeling the behaviour of the dc SQUID to creating a practical system for use inside a SQUID
microscope. Operating the dc SQUID with the appropriate electronics will linearize the device, reduce
the effect of noise, and create a device with wide bandwidth. Each step in creating a practical system
is discussed in detail. Simulations are used to create models predicting the behaviour of the dc SQUID
and the electronics. They are then used to design and create practical electronic systems. Measurements
are performed on Josephson junctions and dc SQUID magnetometers using the designed electronics. The
Josephson junctions behave as predicted and were successfully tested. The dc SQUIDs did not behave as
predicted and were not successfully tested. The SQUIDs were damaged, either by a malfunction in the
cryocooler or through age related deterioration. A full test of the flux-locked loop was not possible and
the dc SQUID was not linearized.

A PRECISION INSTRUMENT FOR RESEARCH INTO NANOLITHOGRAPHIC TECHNIQUES USING FIELD-EMITTED ELECTRON BEAMSHii, King-Fu 01 January 2008 (has links)
Nanomanufacturing is an active research area in academia and industry due to the ever-growing demands for precision surface modifications of thin films or substrates with nanoscale features. Conventional lithographic techniques face many challenges as they approach their fundamental limits. Consequently, new nanomanufacturing tools, fabrication techniques, and precision instruments are being explored and developed to meet these challenges. It has been hypothesized that direct-write nanolithography might be achieved by using a field-emitted electron beam for nanomachining. This dissertation moves this research one step closer by developing a precision instrument that can enable the integration of direct-write nanolithography by a field-emitted electron beam with dimensional metrology by scanning tunneling microscopy. First, field emission from two prospective electron sources, a carbon nanotube field emitter and a sharp tungsten field emitter, is characterized at distances ranging from sub-micrometer to a few micrometers. Also, the design and construction of a low thermal drift piezoelectric linear motor is described for tip-sample approach. Experiments indicate that: the step size is highly repeatable with a standard deviation of less than 1.2 nm and the thermal stability is better than 40 nm/◦C. Finally, the design and construction of the instrument are presented. Experiments indicate that: the instrument is operating properly in scanning tunneling microscope mode with a resolution of less than 2 Å.

Mechanical Characterization of Patterned Silver Columnar Nanorods with the Atomic Force Microscope.Kenny, Sean 30 April 2012 (has links)
Patterned silver (Ag) columnar nanorods were prepared by the glancing angle physical vapor deposition method. The Ag columnar nanorods were grown on a Si (100) substrate patterned with posts in a square “lattice” of length 1 μm. An electron beam source was used as the evaporation method, creating the deposition flux which was oriented 85˚ from the substrate normal. A Dimension Icon with NanoScope V controller atomic force microscope was used to measure the spring constant in 10 nm increments along the long axis of five 670 nm long Ag nanorod specimens. The simple beam bending model was used to analyze the data. Unexpected behavior of the spring constant data was observed which prevented a conclusive physically realistic value of the Young’s modulus to be calculated.

Ionenstrahlanalytik im Helium-Ionen-MikroskopKlingner, Nico 16 March 2017 (has links) (PDF)
The present work describes the implementation of ion beam analysis methods in a helium-ion-microscope for the determination of sample compositions with a focused ion beam of < 1 nm size. Imaging in the microscope is realized by scanning the focused ion beam over the sample surface while measuring the local secondary electron yield. Although this procedure leads to a high topographical contrast, neither the yield nor the energy distribution of the secondary electrons deliver reliable information on the chemical composition of the sample.
For this purpose, in this work different ion beam induced secondary particles were compared with respect to their suitability for the analysis of the chemical composition in the helium-ion-microscope. In particular the information content of the particles, their analysability and their yield were evaluated. As a result, the spectrometry of backscattered particles and the mass spectrometry of sputtered secondary ions were identified as the most promising methods and regarded in detail. The investigation focused on physical limitations and detection limits of the methods as well as their implementability into a helium-ion-microscope. Therefor various concepts of spectrometers were evaluated, tested and validated in terms of their efficiency, energy resolution and practicability in the microscope.
Time-of-flight spectrometry by pulsing the primary ion beam could be identified as the most suitable technique and has been successfully implemented in a helium-ion-microscope. The measurement setup, signal processing and data handling as well as comparative simulations are described in detail. Further the spectrometer was characterized explicitly in terms of time, energy and mass resolution. Spatially resolved backscattering spectra will be shown demonstrating the feasibility of performing ion beam analysis in a helium-ion-microscope for the first time on a size scale of ≤ 60 nm.
By pulsing the primary ion beam the technique of secondary ion mass spectrometry becomes automatically accessible. This method provides information on the molecular composition of samples and can reach higher detection limits than those from backscattering spectrometry. For the first time, in a helium-ion-microscope measured secondary ion mass spectra and spatially resolved elemental analysis by spectrometry of secondary ions, could be demonstrated.
The results of this work are published 2016 in the scientific journal Ultramicroscopy, volume 162 on pages 91 to 971. In October 2016 there will be another publication as a book chapter in „Helium Ion Microscopy“ (publisher: Springer Verlag Heidelberg).
