Adaptive Caching of Distributed Components

Die Zugriffslokalität referenzierter Daten ist eine wichtige Eigenschaft verteilter Anwendungen. Lokales Zwischenspeichern abgefragter entfernter Daten (Caching) wird vielfach bei der Entwicklung solcher Anwendungen eingesetzt, um diese Eigenschaft auszunutzen. Anschliessende Zugriffe auf diese Daten können so beschleunigt werden, indem sie aus dem lokalen Zwischenspeicher bedient werden. Gegenwärtige Middleware-Architekturen bieten dem Anwendungsprogrammierer jedoch kaum Unterstützung für diesen nicht-funktionalen Aspekt. Die vorliegende Arbeit versucht deshalb, Caching als separaten, konfigurierbaren Middleware-Dienst auszulagern. Durch die Einbindung in den Softwareentwicklungsprozess wird die frühzeitige Modellierung und spätere Wiederverwendung caching-spezifischer Metadaten gewährleistet. Zur Laufzeit kann sich das entwickelte System außerdem bezüglich der Cachebarkeit von Daten adaptiv an geändertes Nutzungsverhalten anpassen. / Locality of reference is an important property of distributed applications. Caching is typically employed during the development of such applications to exploit this property by locally storing queried data: Subsequent accesses can be accelerated by serving their results immediately form the local store. Current middleware architectures however hardly support this non-functional aspect. The thesis at hand thus tries outsource caching as a separate, configurable middleware service. Integration into the software development lifecycle provides for early capturing, modeling, and later reuse of cachingrelated metadata. At runtime, the implemented system can adapt to caching access characteristics with respect to data cacheability properties, thus healing misconfigurations and optimizing itself to an appropriate configuration. Speculative prefetching of data probably queried in the immediate future complements the presented approach.

Exécution d'applications parallèles en environnements hétérogènes et volatils : déploiement et virtualisation

La technologie actuelle permet aux scientifiques de divers domaines d'obtenir des données de plus en plus précises et volumineuses, Afin de résoudre ces problèmes associés à l'obtention de ces données, les architectures de calcul évoluent, en fournissant toujours plus de ressources, notamment grâce à des machines plus puissantes et à leur mutualisation. Dans cette thèse, nous proposons d'étudier dans un premier temps le placement des tâches d'applications itératives asynchrones dans des environnements hétérogènes et volatils. Notre solution nous permet également de s'affranchir de l(hétérogénéité des machines hôtes tout en offrent une implantation facilitée de politiques de tolérance aux pannes, les expérimentations que nous avons menées sont encourageantes et montrent qu'il existe un réel potentiel quand à l'utilisation d'une telle plateforme pour l'exécution d'applications scientifiques.

整合性製造管理資訊系統開發之研究

本論文旨在探討以產品資料標準格式及資訊技術與工具,發展資訊整合模式,其目標是連結電腦輔助設計與電腦輔助製造功能,並結合產品資料管理共用資料庫及型態管理作業,達到同步管理,以實現同步工程作業。資訊整合使自研發、設計、製程規劃、及製造之電腦輔助作業的資料得以連結及共用,形成共通性資訊作業環境,有效提昇產品開發與製造之同步流程管理。為達此一目的,必須以符合國際產品資料表示與交換標準定義整合運作系統所使用的產品共通性資料,以利在電子化環境下,企業體內之上下游廠商可透過此標準定義配合網際網路技術,分享彼此產品資料管理系統中的產品資料,降低資料交換的誤差,並加速產品資料交換的速度。本研究以探討XML及STEP為基礎,首先分析產品生命週期管理之資訊需求,就設計、製程規劃、及製造管理之不同系統,釐清資料管理之資料表達規範,其次以IDEF方法進行產品資料管理之流程分析,並以Zachman資訊系統基礎架構框架各觀點進行資訊需求及架構分析,最後以國防工業體系之中心工廠為例,進行個案實証研究探討資料整合模式與流程分析之可行方法。 研究結果發現,提出三點建議供企業實行資訊整合之參考: 一、 企業流程再造BPR是工作流程、組織結構、資訊技術及工作內容等之合理化與重新設計,使績效大幅改善。 二、 雖有大量投資,但整合後系統的顧客價值不一定增加,例如:業務模式無法吸引更多的客戶時,系統整合後的價值也不一定增加。電腦系統整合的困難度應有企業內充分且全面性溝通的時間。 三、 將所有的資訊應用建置於同一超級資訊平台上作業,很難做到。分散式應用程式讓企業在建置資訊系統時不論在採購上或建置上都更為彈性,企業可依需要不斷的擴充系統,而不需在初期即一次購足。資訊服務網(Web Services)的發展促使企業應用整合EAI技術能滿足此一需求。 本研究係以應用於國防工業體系之中心工廠整合性製造管理資訊系統發展模式為例,國防工業是軍公民營企業合作發展模式,其具有穩定、不易外移、及能帶動相關產業發展之特性,相關產業的資訊整合均面對類似的問題。期能藉由本研究之結果,提供企業進行資訊整合時之參考,使其產品資料能於電子化環境中即時而正確地共用與分享。 / In today’s economy, product lifecycle has been significantly shortened. All manufactures are faced with the challenge of making high quality products within a short product introduction time while reducing costs as low as possible. Product lifecycle management (PLM)is an emerging solution and information integration is a core to address this challenge. Without an efficient methodology to integrate data and processes, PLM would be impossible. This research explores thus the methodology and IT requirement for the integrated product manufacturing information management system, with the following research goals: 1. To investigate the methodology needed by manufacturing companies to implement the integrated product manufacturing information management system to achieve PLM. 2. To investigate the information integration framework for the integrated product manufacturing information management system. Based on analytic method originated from Zachman Framework, this research conducted a case study on a defense industry. The core of this case study is to identify the Framework provides a means for organizing the models of Enterprise Applications Integration (EAI) into useful categories. Model is composed of multiple modeling methods integrated in a way that is sufficient to describe the system. The main models are: (1). Information models for the representation of product data are being developed as an international standard (ISO 10303) informally called STEP. STEP (STandard for the Exchange of Product model data) is designed to enable the exchange of product data between heterogeneous computer systems used throughout the product life cycle. (2). A neutral model of engineering and management data, developed based on the eXtensible Markup Language (XML), can be a standard interchangeable information representation for manufacturing information integration in PLM, and is developed in this research. (3). During several of the BPR steps, the critical process pieces are identified and designed together using IDEF Models. A last, with respect to enterprise information technology integration, this research comes to the conclusions as follows: 1. The primary goal of a BPR effort is to document the current and future business process and to ensure stakeholder buy-in and support. 2. Enterprise information integration is still relatively new, and its best practices are not fully disseminated, which helps to explain why Zachman Framework and analysis tools are important. 3. Since the structure of the data changes too rapidly, integration at the physical source level does not work. Web Services provide a distributed computing technology for revealing the business services of applications on the Internet or intranet using standard XML protocols and formats. It enables EAI to be an ongoing process of creating a flexible, standardized enterprise infrastructure that allows new IT-based applications and business processes to be easily and efficiently deployed.

Middleware de comunicação entre objetos distribuídos para gerenciamento de computadores baseado em redes sem fio (WSE-OS) /

Resumo: Para simplificar o gerenciamento de computadores, vários sistemas de administração estruturados por conexões físicas adotam técnicas avançadas para gestão de configuração de software. No entanto, a forte ligação entre hardware e o software faz com que haja uma individualização desta gerência, além da penalização da mobilidade e ubiqüidade do poder computacional. Neste cenário, cada computador torna-se uma entidade individual a ser gerenciada, exigindo operações manuais de configuração da imagem de sistema. Tecnologias que oferecem gestão centralizada baseadas em conexões físicas cliente-servidor, combinando técnicas de virtualização com a utilização de sistemas de arquivos distribuídos, refletem a degradação em flexibilidade e facilidade de instalação deste sistema gerenciador. Outras arquiteturas para gerenciamento centralizado que estruturam o compartilhamento de dados através de conexões físicas e dependem do protocolo PXE, apresentam os mesmos impasses descritos anteriormente. Diante das limitações dos modelos de gerenciamento centralizado baseado em conexões físicas, o objetivo deste trabalho é o desenvolvimento de um middleware de comunicação cliente-servidor como parte integrante e necessária para um ambiente de gerenciamento centralizado em redes de comunicações sem fio. Este ambiente, denominado WSE-OS (Wireless Sharing Enviroment ? Operating Systems), é um modelo baseado Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) que associa técnicas de virtualização e sistema de acesso remoto seguro para criação de uma arquitetura distribuída como base de um sistema de gestão. WSE-OS é capaz de realizar a replicação de sistemas operacionais em um ambiente de comunicação sem fio além de oferecer abstração de hardware aos clientes. Nevertheless, the strong link between hardware and software makes for an individualism of that management, besides penalizing computational mobility and ubiquity. In this scenario, each computer becomes an individual entity to be managed, requiring manual operations of the system image configuration. Technologies that offer centralized management based on client-server physical connections, combining virtualization techniques with the use of distributed file systems in clusters with distributed processing on network computers reflect the deterioration in flexibility and ease of installation and maintenance of distributed applications. Other architectures for centralized management that structure the sharing of data through physical connections and depend on the PXE protocol, present the same dilemmas described above. Given the limitations models of centralized management based on physical connections, the objective of this project is the development of a middleware for client-server communication as part necessary of an environment for centralized management in wireless communications networks. This environment, called WSE-OS (Wireless Sharing Environment ? Operating Systems), is a model based Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI), which combines virtualization techniques and secure access system for creating a distributed architecture as the basis for a management system. Towards a framework for determining a platform for teaching web application development in tertiary institutions in South Africa

This study develops and applies a conceptual framework that can be used to evaluate dynamic Web platforms in order to determine a platform for teaching Web application development in tertiary institutions. The framework is specific, yet comprehensive and supported with theory and empirical experimental programming results. We first identify the concepts of Web application development and the constraints to be satisfied by a platform for teaching identified concepts. Then we establish various criteria that will enhance the teaching of the concepts. We also establish qualities and experiment that will ensure that a selected platform is easy to use, fast, portable and affordable. A spreadsheet tool is developed to apply the framework and enable users to customize the framework by varying the criteria's weights. The developed framework is tested by the evaluation of the suitability of Java Servlets, JSP, ASP and PHP with PHP emerging as a suitable platform. / Computing / M.Sc. (Information Systems)

This paper presents an architecture of an Interactive Service Provider named Interactive Service Provider for Digital Television Systems - ispTV - to interactive digital television systems, based on a service-oriented architecture that enables the publication and delivery of services in different technologies such as JAX-WS, Axis2 and ispTV services, with the inclusion of an abstract layer of communication in order to simplify the development of interactive programs with a standardized communication APIs provided by the architecture. The Brazilian Digital Television System is to provide an objective of social, cultural and technological inclusion through broadcasting educational, government and commercial television applications for the television user programs. In this context, this paper presents some interactive applications with educational support to viewers with special needs using the proposed architecture. The applications presented demonstrate the usability aspects of the architecture along ispTV to test usability of the APIs of abstraction that the architecture offers. Also presented are performance testing and scalability of the architecture, showing that its operation allows its use for the transmission of interactive applications for various classes of projects, institutions and companies. / A evolução dos sistemas de televisão, de analógicos para digitais, proporciona uma nova e vasta gama de serviços diante da possibilidade de transmissão de dados junto à alta qualidade de áudio e vídeo. Com a agregação de dados a transmissão dos programas televisivos, surgem os sistemas de TV Digital Interativa permitindo a inclusão de conteúdos interativos implicando em um novo modo de produzir e transmitir os programas televisivos. Este trabalho apresenta uma Arquitetura de um Provedor de Serviços Interativos, nomeada Interactive Service Provider for Digital Television Systems ispTV para sistemas de televisão digital interativa, baseado em uma Arquitetura Orientada a Serviços que possibilita a publicação e oferecimento de serviços em diferentes tecnologias, tais como JAX-WS, Axis2 e serviços ispTV, com a inclusão de uma camada abstrata de comunicação com o intuito de simplificar o desenvolvimento de programas interativos junto a uma comunicação padronizada oferecida por APIs da arquitetura. O Sistema Brasileiro de Televisão Digital tem como um dos objetivos proporcionar a inclusão social, cultural e tecnológica através da televisão transmitindo aplicações educacionais, governamentais e comerciais para a interação do usuário com os programas televisivos. Neste contexto, este trabalho apresenta algumas aplicações interativas, educacionais e de suporte aos telespectadores com necessidades especiais, utilizando a arquitetura proposta. As aplicações apresentadas, evidenciam aspectos de usabilidade da arquitetura ispTV junto aos teste de usabilidade das APIs de abstração que a arquitetura oferece. MODELO PARA PREDIÇÃO DE AÇÕES E INFERÊNCIA DE SITUAÇÕES DE RISCO EM AMBIENTES SENSÍVEIS AO CONTEXTO / A MODEL FOR ACTION PREDICTION AND RISK SITUATION INFERENCE IN CONTEXT-AWARE ENVIRONMENTS

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The availability of low cost sensors and mobile devices allowed many advances in research of ubiquitous and pervasive computing area. With the capture of contextual data provided by the sensors attached to these devices it is possible to obtain user state information and the environment, and thus map the relationship between them. One approach to map these relationships are the activities performed by the user, which also are part of the context itself. However, even that human activities could cause injuries, there is not much discussion in the academy of how ubiquitous computing could assess the risk related to them. In this sense, the Activity Project aims to determine the risk situations related to activities performed by people in a context aware environment, through a middleware that considers the risk in the actions that composes an activity and the user performance while performing an activity. This thesis aims to specify the Activity Manager middleware layer proposed for the Activity Project, whose goal is to address issues relating to the prediction of actions and activities and the detection of risk situation in the actions performed by an user. The model developed to address the composition and prediction of activities is based on the Activity Theory, while the risk in actions is determined by changes in the physiological context of the user caused by the actions performed by itself, modeled through the model named Hyperspace Analogous to Context. Tests were conducted and developed models outperformed proposals found for action prediction, with an accuracy of 78.69%, as well as for risk situations detection, with an accuracy of 98.94%, showing the efficiency of the proposed solution. / A popularização de sensores de baixo custo e de dispositivos móveis permitiu diversos avanços nas pesquisas da área de computação ubíqua e pervasiva. Com a captura dos dados contextuais providos pelos sensores acoplados a estes dispositivos é possível obter informações do estado do usuário e do ambiente, e dessa forma mapear a relação entre ambos. Uma das possíveis abordagens para mapear essas relações são as atividades executadas pelo usuário, que inclusive são parte constituinte do próprio contexto. Entretanto, mesmo que as atividades humanas possam causar danos físicos, não há muita discussão na academia de como a computação ubíqua poderia avaliar esse risco relacionado a elas. Neste sentido, o projeto Activity Project objetiva determinar situações de risco no momento da realização de atividades desempenhadas por pessoas em um ambiente sensível ao contexto, através de um middleware sensível ao contexto que considera o risco nas ações que compõe uma atividade e o desempenho do usuário enquanto executa uma atividade. Esta dissertação tem por objetivo especificar a camada Gerência de Atividades do middleware proposto para o Activity Project, cujo objetivo é tratar as questões referentes à predição de ações e atividades e a detecção de situações de risco em ações. O modelo desenvolvido para tratar a composição das atividades e a predição das mesmas baseia-se na Teoria da Atividade, enquanto que o risco em ações é determinado pelas mudanças no contexto fisiológico do usuário, modeladas através do modelo Hiperespaço Análogo ao Contexto. Nos testes realizados os modelos desenvolvidos superaram as propostas encontradas até o momento para a predição de ações com uma a precisão de 78,69%, bem como para a determinação de situações de risco com uma precisão de 98,94%, demonstrando a eficácia da solução proposta.

In a conglomerate of computers in a network, each computer becomes an entity managed individually, which generates continuous requests for configuration changes, such as installing software updates, configuration and connection of peripherals, profiling email and applying patches. Moreover, there is the risk of data theft and hacking when users' computers are not protected. Allied to this scenario, the constant evolution of computer systems and their potential for processing, each day requires new techniques for exploitation of these resources. Solutions aimed facilitating the management of environments with large mass of computers to take maximum advantage of computing power concentrated on servers have become real needs, not only in large corporations but also small and medium enterprises, besides other types organizations, such as educational institutions. Facing this need, focusing on a tool that supported this growth scenario, this work presents a centralized management model, named WSE-OS (Wireless Sharing Environment – Operating Systems) based on virtualization techniques and secure remote access combined with a remote file system in user space. This solution eliminates the need for installing and configuring applications machine to machine, besides take greater advantage of existing computing power on the servers . Déploiement auto-adaptatif d'intergiciel sur plate-forme élastique / Self-adaptive deployment for middleware on elastic platform

Nous avons étudié durant cette thèse les moyens de rendre le déploiement d'un intergiciel auto-adaptatif. Le type d'intergiciel que nous avons considéré ici est hiérarchique (structure de graphe) et distribué. Chaque sommet du graphe modélise un processus qui peut être déployé sur une machine physique ou virtuelle d'une infrastructure de type grille/cloud, les arêtes modélisent des liens de communications entre processus. Il offre aux clients des services de calcul haute performance. Les infrastructures de grilles/cloud étant élastiques (perte et ajout de nœuds), un déploiement statique n'est pas la solution idéale car en cas de panne on risque de tout reprendre à zéro, ce qui est coûteux. Nous avons donc proposé un algorithme auto-stabilisant pour que l'intergiciel puisse retrouver un état stable sans intervention extérieure, au bout d'un temps fini, lorsqu'il est confronté à certains types de pannes. Les types de pannes que nous avons considérés sont les pannes transitoires (simulé par la perte de nœuds, l'ajout de nouveaux nœuds, la perte de liens entre deux nœuds). Pour évaluer ces algorithmes, nous avons conçu un simulateur. Les résultats des simulations montrent qu'un déploiement, sujet à des pannes transitoires, s'auto-adapte. Avant d'en arriver à la phase de programmation du simulateur, nous avons d'abord proposé un modèle d'infrastructure distribuée (ce modèle permet de décrire des environnements de type grille/cloud), un modèle pour décrire certains types d'intergiciels hiérarchiques et enfin un modèle pouvant décrire un intergiciel en cours d'exécution (processus déployés sur les machines). / We have studied the means to make a middleware deployment self-adaptive. Our use case middleware is hierarchical and distributed and can be modeled by a graph. A vertex models a process and an edge models a communication link between two processes. The middleware provides high performance computing services to the users.Once the middleware is deployed on a computing infrastructure like a grid or cloud, how it adapt the changes in dynamic environment? If the deployment is static, it may be necessary to redo all the deployment process, which is a costly operation. A better solution would be to make the deployment self-adaptive. We have proposed a rules-based self-stabilizing algorithm to manage a faulty deployment. Thus, after the detection of an unstable deployment, caused by some transients faults (joining of new nodes or deletion of existing nodes which may modify the deployment topology), the system will eventually recover a stable state, without external help, but only by executing the algorithm.We have designed an ad hoc discrete events simulator to evaluate the proposed algorithm. The simulation results show that, a deployment, subjected to transients faults which make it unstable, adapts itself. Before the simulator design, we had proposed a model to describe a distributed infrastructure, a model to describe hierarchical middleware and a model to describe a deployment, that is the mapping between the middleware processes and the hardware on which they are running on.

This dissertation explores the features of object orientation to define an architecture framework for interactive Digital TV and reuse the functionality of the modules digital learning objects. With the need to focus on a specific type of problem, which identifies students in high school and college still have difficulties in learning mathematics, therefore investigates the field of trigonometry in order to promote entertainment and education on ways of teaching resources used by teachers. It is part of this dissertation also investigate applications and middleware frameworks developed by the Digital TV standard in Europe and Brazil, highlighting difficulties such as definition of standard interfaces, handling graphics, audio and video resources. To qualify the system evaluation results generated are presented in three classes using the resources of learning objects for teaching trigonometry in a digital television system. The results obtained in the experiment show that the environment contributes positively as a further support of technological resources that can be used in education and promotes the need to use free applications for interactive digital TV, leaving an architecture that can be exploited for other field of or other mathematical discipline using the same methodology. / O desenvolvimento e a reutilização de arquitetura de softwares voltados para educação no Brasil continuam carentes de pesquisas para reduzir o prazo, o custo e melhor aproveitamento das funcionalidades que obedeçam às características pedagógicas em ambiente real de aprendizagem. Esta dissertação explora os recursos da orientação a objetos para definir uma arquitetura de framework para TV Digital interativa e reutilizar as funcionalidades dos módulos de objetos digitais de aprendizagem. Com a necessidade de focalizar sobre um tipo específico de problema, identifica que alunos do ensino médio e superior ainda possuem dificuldades em aprender matemática, por isso é investigado o campo da trigonometria com propósito de promover entretenimento e educação sobre as formas de recursos didáticos utilizados pelos professores. Faz parte desta dissertação também investigar aplicações e frameworks desenvolvidos através do middleware de TV Digital no padrão europeu e brasileiro, destacando dificuldades como definição de padrões de interfaces, manipulações gráficas, recursos de áudio e vídeo. Para qualificação do sistema gerado são apresentados resultados avaliativos em três turmas utilizando os recursos de objetos de aprendizagem para aulas de trigonometria em um sistema de televisão digital. Os resultados obtidos na experiência demonstram que o ambiente contribui de forma positiva como mais um apoio de recursos tecnológicos que podem ser utilizados na educação e fomenta para necessidade de utilizar aplicações gratuitas para TV Digital interativa, deixando uma arquitetura que possa ser explorada para outro campo da matemática ou outra disciplina utilizando a mesma metodologia.
