Inexpensive mobile technologies to empower rural farmers with m-agricultureIraba, Marie Louise January 2010 (has links)

Market information and established communication between seller and buyer play an important role in business activities. This thesis investigates the Transkei area in the Eastern Cape / Province, South Africa to find out how to empower rural farmers by providing them with less-expensive mobile technology enabling them to post and advertise their produce, access market / information on a common database, and find and communicate with potential customers. The farmers&rsquo / requirements were identified using quantitative and qualitative methods and a prototype / consisting of USSD and web applications was developed. It allows the farmer to follow a sequence of menu commands to send a request to the database and access market information, such / as commodity prices, and post information about their own produce so as to attract more customers. The low cost of USSD and the ubiquity of mobile phones enable the system to be usable, affordable and effective. During the final stage of development, the system was tested successfully and addressed a major problem faced by farmers, i.e. lack of access to market information.

Contribution des TIC à l’amélioration des conditions de vie des populations défavorisées : l’exemple de la rive droite du Fleuve Sénégal, en Mauritanie / Contribution of ICT to improve the living conditions of disadvantaged populations : the example of the right bank of river SenegalN'Diath, Mouhamadoul Hady 17 January 2011 (has links)
This thesis deals with the study of the contribution of ICT to improve the living conditions of disadvantaged populations. From an empirical and spatial framework that is the Law Contrée located on the right bank of the River Senegal, we try to show how populations isolated and poor and abandoned by the public authorities were able to make ICT tools for the improvement of living conditions. Indeed, in this enclave locality, droughts of the 1970s, has destroyed the local economic fabric based on subsistence agriculture. Emigrants who have deserted this locality are found in Europe to meet the needs of families remained in the country. In fact, money transfers for many families are the only way to cope with everyday needs. These money transfers through informal channels through the mobile phone. After reviewing the different types of transfers, empirical study is interested on the impact of this financial windfall in the villages and towns of the basin of river Senegal using, rather than of GDP per capita, but more objective indicators of human development in terms of social benefits. In addition to ensuring the survival of family, immigrants grouped into associations in host communities undertake community-based projects. Urban transformations through real estate projects are also an important indicator. Sites that create employment in small and medium-sized enterprises such as welding, carpentry and hardware. Furthermore, community radio located on the left bank of the River has an impact of populations on the right bank. These radios, extension of Orality, are very close to local concerns. Indeed, announcements and information conveyed through these radios relate to the everyday life of the populations. But at the same time this appropriation of ICTs has resulted in significant socio-culturalchanges in populations and deepened further the social divide by poverty and marginalization. However, oral cultural identity support appears to be spared by this loss of marks because the media like radio and mobile phones are a kind of second Orality", a kind of preservation of traditional communications widely evoked in the empirical part forms.

The study of trust in the field of information and communication science is of paramount importance in this discipline at the crossroad of others research field. It helps to refine and to supplement the knowledge to a better understanding of informational and communicational phenomena. Trust due to it theoretical aspects, is rarely mobilized in research as an explanatory variable in information and communication sciences. The objective of this work is to measure the level of trust of "Orange Money" users. This money transfer system based on mobile phone is now part of the range of services offered by the company of telecommunications Orange Mali to Malian populations. In order to achieve this, a questionnaire was administered to 309 citizens in the district of Bamako, the main city of Mali. Results from the processing of collected data show a high level of confidence of users in monetary transactions by mobile phone. However, the result shows a general distrust of survey participants to give their personal information to Orange Mali. All these results are interpreted in a dedicated chapter. The present thesis focuses on ten chapters organized into three parts: the first is devoted to the presentation of theoretical concepts on trust, economic and social context. The second part focuses on the analysis, processing and interpretation of data collected on our field survey. And finally, in the third part, we try to put into perspective the results.

A Mobile Deaf-to-hearing communication aid for medical diagnosisMutemwa, Muyowa January 2011 (has links)
>Magister Scientiae - MSc / Many South African Deaf people use their mobile phones for communication with SMSs yet they would prefer to converse in South African Sign Language. Deaf people with a capital `D' are different from deaf or hard of hearing as they primarily use sign language to communicate. This study explores how to design and evaluate a prototype that will allow a Deaf person using SASL to tell a hearing doctor how s/he is feeling and provide a way for the doctor to respond. A computer{based prototype was designed and evaluated with the Deaf people in a previous study. Results from the user trial of the computer{based mock{up indicated that Deaf users would like to see the prototype on a cell phone. Those user trial results, combined with our own user survey results conducted with Deaf people, are used as requirements. We built a prototype for a mobile phone browser by embedding SASL videos inside XHTML pages using Adobe Flash. The prototype asks medical questions using SASL videos. These questions are arranged in an organized way that helps in identifying a medical problem. The answers to the questions are then displayed in English and shown to the doctor on the phone. A content authoring tool was also designed and implemented. The content authoring tool is used for populating the prototype in a context free manner allowing for plug and play scenarios such as a doctor's office, Department of Home A airs or police station. A focus group consisting of Deaf people was conducted to help in the design and pilot trial of the system. A final user trial was conducted with more than thirty Deaf people and the results are presented and analyzed. Data is collected with questionnaires, semi-structured interviews and video recordings. The results indicate that most of the Deaf people found the system easy to learn, easy to navigate through, did not get lost and understood the sign language in the videos on the mobile phone. The hand gestures and facial expressions on the sign language videos were clear. Most of them indicated they would like to use the system for free, and that the system did not ask too many questions. Most of them were happy with the quality of the sign language videos on the mobile phone and would consider using the system in real life. Finally they felt their private information was safe while using the system. Denní rytmy obcí Středočeského kraje / Daily rhythms of municipatilies in Central Bohemian regionFrydrych, Pavel January 2018 (has links)
An object of this diploma thesis is a study of daily rhythms of municipalities in the Central Bohemian Region. The aim is to bring new insights into the daily rhythms of the suburban zone of the Prague Metropolitan Area and the Central Bohemian Region. The work has three main objectives. The first objective is to create a typology of the Central Bohemian municipalities according to their daily rhythms. Mobile phone location data is used to create the typology. There was used a method called cluster analysis. The second objective is to evaluate the daily rhythms in selected municipalities (Kněževes, Ořech, Tochovice) in detail with other data (mobile phone location data from Prague Institute of Planning and Development and commuting data from the Census 2011). Using these sources, I want to highlight the obstacles, but also the benefits of using mobile phone location data in studying of daily rhythms. The last objective is to describe in these three municipalities the pacemakers which influent their timing. The results show that in the Central Bohemian region dominate municipalities with a residential type of daily rhythm. Most of these municipalities are located in the suburban zone of Prague, while in other municipalities of the Central Bohemian region is the rhythm often almost balanced. Large...

The growth of mobile phone and therefore the number of base station, which establish communication with mobile devices, has extended the applicability of services under this wireless technology. Although it has benefits for the current lifestyle, mobile phone has generated concerns about possible adverse health effects of exposure to non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation populations. The set of three articles are included in this thesis with the overall objective to investigate the association between exposure to non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation arising from base station of the mobile phone and health symptoms. In cross-sectional study, 440 questionnaires were applied by means of interviews in two neighborhoods in Salvador/BA. Initially examined whether exposure to non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation/mobile phone on ways to use the cell phone handset and the perception of the population in exposure to non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation. Considering physical phenomena of absorption, reflection and diffraction, which affect the propagation of electromagnetic characteristics and functioning of the cell phone waves, especially as this is the strongest source of non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation, how to use by the population, the lack of base station Monte Serrat, considering also research showing an association between cell phone non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation and health effects and the findings of this research, it is appropriate to analyze the association between health effects and exposure to non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation mobile phone. These effects would be more linked to cell phone use in relation to base station. In this sense, it is understood that the reasons should be of more concern of the population are related to the duration of the calls, the use of the set of weak signal coverage and the proximity of the device to the skull, among other inappropriate usage modes. In the case of exposure to non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation/base station, in view of the low values of the electric field and that individuals are in the far field, the effects would be for residents to 300 m from its surroundings. In the analysis of the perception of the respondents, it was found more reference to risks than benefits. It was found that age influences the perception of risk associated with non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation /mobile phone. We evaluated the association between complaints and neurological and psychiatric diagnoses and exposure to non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation mobile phone, using a hierarchical logistic regression analysis. We observed an association between neuropsychiatric effects and reside near the base station and forms of cell phone use (≤30min / day, with weak signal coverage near the body, two or more chips and never turn off the phone to sleep). It was concluded that exposure to non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation mobile phone and other electronics was independently associated with neuropsychiatric symptoms of gender, education and smoking. In this sense, it is recommended the adoption of precautionary measures aiming to reduce such exposure: the installation of base stations of mobile phone away at least a distance of 300 m from residences. The cell phone user must use earphone or headphone pop, as well as to avoid using the device with weak signal coverage; should still leave the cell phone away from the body and keep it off while sleeping. These results may guide the authorities towards the achievement of prevention/ precaution and information for decision making regarding the management and risk communication for the promotion of health of individuals when exposed to such radiation.

Mobile phones' contributions to socio-economic development according to Sen : corn growers' perceived impact in the CongoCibangu, Sylvain January 2016 (has links)
Research questions: This research was focused on exploring the impact of communication technologies on rural populations in the Congo. In particular, this research posed two questions: 1. Do mobile phones produce development in rural areas of the Congo? 2. Do mobile phones improve the living conditions of people? The questions helped examine ways in which mobile phones were or were not engendering development among these populations. Methods: The research was undertaken using four methods: 1. Phenomenology, 2. Sen's capability approach, 3. Participatory method, and 4. Ecological method. Phenomenology aimed to cater to the experiences and meanings of mobile phone uses. Sen's capability approach allowed the interviews to be focused on the basic needs of the poor. Participatory method provided a greater participation of respondents in discussion groups, and ecological method helped achieve a higher inclusion of key players in the targeted area. Major findings: The major findings of this study included: 1. Much of the literature on mobile phones and development was not representative or inclusive of key players and their day-to-day lives. 2. Studies have tended to present snapshots or single-focused accounts of mobile phone and development. 3. Authors of mobile phone research have tended to see rural populations with an urban-led bias, leaving aside the actual characteristics of rural areas. 4. Mobile phones were not limited to a person and her properties, but rather mobile phones were owned and shared by the community. 5. Participants expressed a need for technical skills and means to be available to the community and their members. 6. Households were not separated, but rather they were connected to allow people take care of one another. 7. People were connected through collective solidarities in order to come to the aid of those with special needs. 8. Literature and mobile phone sponsors or companies were disseminating mobile phones with an extractive and commercial tendency, focused principally on fees of batteries, chargers, and prepaid cards. Major contributions: The major contributions of this research revolved around the focus on: 1. technology to enhance the needed technical skills among concerned populations. 2. shared ownership of mobile phones to cater to both users and non-users of mobile phones among concerned populations. 3. connected households to capitalize on the dynamics of family among concerned populations. 4. collective solidarities to accommodate the processes of aiding one another among concerned populations. 5. capabilities, from a commercial or extractive aspect to capabilities to enhance the capabilities of people to afford mobile phones fees. 6. capabilities, from a corporate or business aspect to capabilities to enhance the capabilities of people who did not and could not own a business. 7. human basic needs to enhance the capabilities of mobile phone users with regard to human basic needs. 8. outliers or the marginalized to attend to those left out among concerned populations. 9. mobile phone-centric libraries to enhance the storage and retrieval of needed information among concerned populations.

INSTANTES COTIDIANOS: POR UMA ARTE DA FOTOGRAFIA MÓVEL / DAILY INSTANTS: FOR A MOBILE PHOTOGRAPHY ARTSwarowsky, Luciana Abitante 21 March 2013 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The objective of this research, in visual poetic, is to investigate in a practicaltheoretical
way, the photography production from the usage of a new media: the
mobile phone. This research aims to question the mobile photography while
photographic object, as question the ephemerid of photographic act through a mobile
device. In the subjugate of the pre-established technical limitation, which is a mobile
device characteristic, I am developing a poetic which works the photographic capture
and post-capture in transit, the mobility. This is a poetic motivated by a growing
potential that is reaching the mobile communication and that tries to include new
media in daily basis. Therefore, we are being guided by electronic impulses and
dialogs mediated by the machine. Through three-distinct operational process, from
innumerous possible, I work the mobile photography searching ways to transform it in
an expressive way of art. In the position of a armed subject and completely
apparatus , with a camera always in hand, I tried to express an experience derived
not only from my subjectivity while author and real subject, but also as a experience
that elucidates the device chosen automatisms and, therefore, and automatized
subject revealed, non-personalized. In this way, all the photographic production
process, capture and post-capture, get instituted by an interactive dialog between
subjectivity and automaticity.

Previous issue date: 2013-10-24 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This study aimed to investigate the presence of the cell phone and its recurrence for educational use in the municipal schools of Florianopolis - RME, collecting and analyzing data about the access and familiarity of students and teachers with digital media in the school environment of RME, and also verifying the status of the cell phone and the use of its photo and video devices. A literature review leaded to an investigation about the tensions and meetings produced by the presence of media in schools, with emphasis on educational issues of authority and digital inclusion, and teacher training. Using questionnaires, it was found that the cell is accessible to almost all the students and teachers of the RME of Florianópolis at the three schools surveyed. Both groups are aware that the cell is restrained by law, but it does not prevent its presence and use in schools. The teachers and students are favorable to the pedagogical use of cell phone, and to its photo and video capabilities. A larger debate about the use of these tools in schools is essential, because the formal prohibition does not preclude the use of the cell phone, perceived as a tool of transgression by students, and therefore its educational potential stays unseen for the teachers / Nesta pesquisa buscou-se investigar a presença do celular e suas recorrências de uso pedagógico em escolas da Rede Municipal de Ensino de Florianópolis, coletando e analisando-se dados sobre o acesso e a familiaridade discente e docente com as mídias digitais no ambiente escolar da RME, bem como sobre o estatuto do celular e do uso de seus dispositivos de fotografia e vídeo.
