In this sense, was selected for analysis the educational complex corresponding to the once called Institute of Education of Paraíba, formed by three buildings: the Central Building (where was promoted the secondary school and teacher's formation), the "Infancy Garden" and the "School of Application". This institution was planned as a model of the educational system of the Paraíba, predicted by the Plan of Reform of the Public Institution in 1935, which proposed new directives for the construction of new scholar buildings. This work is organized in three chapters, where the first presents how was the scholar environment in João Pessoa before the existence of an architecture specific for educational purposes and how was the first schools built to this end; the second chapter presents the new scholar architecture that toke place with the educational reforms in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Paraíba, whose directives were based on the two first States; the third chapter analyzes the buildings of the “Institute of Education of Paraíba” and its architecture through the relation of the pedagogic ideas of the movement “New School” with the modernization of the scholar environment. / O objetivo desta pesquisa é verificar como se produziu a modernização da arquitetura escolar de João Pessoa na década de 1930, com a adoção das idéias do movimento pedagógico Escola Nova. Nesse sentido, foi selecionado para análise o complexo educacional correspondente ao antigo Instituto de Educação da Paraíba, composto por três edifícios: o Edifício Central (onde era promovido o ensino secundário e a formação de professores), o Jardim da Infância e a Escola de Aplicação. Esta instituição foi projetada como modelo do sistema educacional paraibano, previsto pelo Plano de Reforma da Instrução Pública de 1935, que propôs novas diretrizes para construção de edifícios escolares. O presente trabalho foi estruturado em três capítulos, em que, no primeiro, é apresentado como era, em João Pessoa, o ambiente escolar antes de existir uma arquitetura específica para a função educativa e como foram as primeiras escolas construídas para este fim; o segundo expõe a nova arquitetura escolar que surgiu com as reformas educacionais no Rio de Janeiro, em São Paulo e na Paraíba, cujas diretrizes para a arquitetura escolar se basearam na dos dois estados citados; o terceiro expõe a análise dos edifícios do Instituto de Educação da Paraíba, analisando sua arquitetura através da relação das idéias pedagógicas do movimento Escola Nova, com a modernização de seu espaço escolar.
