3-D computer generated animation and the material plane : an investigation of the material qualities of 3-D computer generated animation and relations to space and form

Jukes, Alexander P. January 2017 (has links)
This research considers the production and presentation of 3-D CGI animation where the intention is to explore the potential of this mode of practice as material. Through a practical and theoretical study, this research project outlines the proposal that within the context of 3-D CGI animation there exists a property that can be regarded as unique, or deemed as an essential quality, which in turn can be defined as material. The research refers directly to work developed by Structural/Materialist filmmakers and artists working in the 1960s and 1970s whose investigation into process and materiality acts as a method and potential framework for exploringapproaches and processes within 3-D CGI animation. The project asks the following questions: 1. Is it possible through a practical exploration to establish distinctiveness for 3-D CGI animation? 2. Can theoretical research in relation to media studies, film studies, specifically Structural/Materialist film assist to support and shape project development? 3. Can the practical work associated with the project and theoretical undertaking converge to support a basis for determining an individual characteristic for 3-D CGI animation? Hypothesis My hypothesis in relation to the expected findings and outcomes for the project can be distilled to form two strands: 1. That 3-D CGI is definable as a unique mode of production and can be classified as distinct from other digital modes of image production. That the result of the research will point towards a conceptualisation for 3-D CGI where as a process it has the capacity and the influence to be considered as a unique, discreet mode of production. That the qualities and the self-styled artefacts that emerge from the digital mass can be determined as definable products linked to a specific process.

Emotional Reactions to Stationary and Moving Animals

Unknown Date (has links)
Appraisal theory posits that the addition of new, relevant, information can alter the outcome of the appraisal process for a given emotional elicitor, such as an animal. The current study aimed to explore whether the addition of animal movement would sufficiently influence the intensity of emotional reactions and action motivation ratings for animals. The current study compared self-reported emotional reactions and self-reported action motivations for still images and videos for six animal categories (snakes, spiders, cockroaches, tortoises, deer, and ducks). Our findings indicate that movement increases the intensity of relevant emotional reactions to cockroaches, tortoises, deer, and ducks, but not snakes or spiders. Action motivation ratings indicate that movement increases approach motivations for the positively associated animals but does not alter avoidance motivations for the negatively associated animals. The implications for our understanding of the perception of and reactions to animals are discussed. / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (M.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2019. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

Films on Paper: Adaptation of Eileen Chang's Novels

Tang, Funing 01 January 2009 (has links)
Eileen Chang (1920-1995), a legendary female writer in Chinese literature history, lived in the most turbulent time of contemporary China. Her works are all about love. Her characters are all insignificant people, unrealistically invested with illusory dreams of life, but meanwhile, absorbed by worldly pursuits and pleasures. And her tone is desolate. People worship her, both as a great writer and as a mysterious woman. From 1980s, the fascination with her and her literature overtly announces itself in Chinese language cinema. Several critically acclaimed directors have intended to adapt her aura and charisma through adapting her literature. But, the result of their efforts is not optimistic; the disparity between the films and the novels still has been widely sensed. My thesis focuses on the film adaptations of her novels. I intend to explore this woman?s world through cinema; precisely, through the unexpected gap between her novels and their film versions, in order to explore the reality and moods in her mind that are hard to visualize. The same events, moments and situations presented in both the novels and the films also offer great opportunities for the comparison of two different ways of story-telling.

Electromagnetic Fields in Moving and Inhomogeneous Media

Piwnicki, Paul January 2001 (has links)
The present thesis deals with electromagnetic effectscreated by the motion or inhomogeneity of a dielectricmedium. In the first paper the quantum R\"ontgen effect isdiscussed. Here a rotating Bose-Einstein condensate -- oranother kind of quantum fluid -- is placed in a chargedcapacitor. The medium's rotation creates a magnetic field.Quantum media can only rotate in form of vortices, which leadsto a magnetic field corresponding to the field of a magneticmonopole. In the remaining part of the thesis the geometricalrepresentation of electromagnetic fields in moving andinhomogeneous media is discussed. It is shown that aninhomogeneously moving dielectric, e.g., a vortex, defines aspace-time metric and light rays follow null-geodesics definedby this metric. This means that light propagation in a movingmedium is analogous to light propagation in a gravitationalfield. The possibility of creating laboratory models ofastronomical objects, e.g., black holes is discussed. Theapplicability of the newly developed media with extremely lowgroup velocity for the actual creation of such an experiment isconsidered. Furthermore, a model for the case of the slowlymoving medium is discussed. Here the light propagation isanalogous to the motion of a charged particle propagatingthrough a magnetic field. The velocity of the flow correspondsto the vector potential. Consequently, light propagation in avortex corresponds to the Aharonov-Bohm effect. Finally, acomplete geometrical description of light in an inhomogeneousdielectric at rest is presented. It is shown that lighttrajectories are geodesics of a three-dimensional metricdefined by the medium. Here even the propagation of the fieldsis discussed in the language of differential geometry and it isshown that the field vectors are parallel transported along therays. These considerations can be generalized to thefour-dimensional case where the field-strength tensor isparallel transported along the ray. This emphasizes thefar-reaching analogy between light in moving media and light ingravitational fields.

Discovering Moving Clusters from Spatial-Temporal Databases

Lee, Chien-Ming 28 July 2007 (has links)
Owing to the advances of computer and communication technologies, clustering analysis on moving objects has attracted increasing attention in recent years. An interesting problem is to find the moving clusters composed of objects which move along for a sufficiently long period of time. However, a moving cluster inclines to break after some time because of the goal change in each individual object. In order to identify the set of moving clusters, we propose the formal definition of moving clusters with semantically clear parameters. Based on the definition, we propose delicate approaches to cluster moving objects. The proposed approaches are evaluated using data generated with and without underlying model. We validate our approaches with a through experimental evaluation and comparison.

Vibration suppression of straight and curved beams traversed by moving loads

Javid, Fahim 01 September 2011 (has links)
Vibration suppression of beams traversed by moving loads, using optimal Tuned-Mass-Damper (TMD) systems, is investigated. This study is performed on two different geometrical shapes of the beam, namely, uniform homogenous straight beam, and the uniform homogenous curved beam. Initially, three different models of the moving load on a straight beam were developed using the APDL coding in ANSYS©, a commercially available software. Results obtained from the numerical simulation of either a single moving load or a moving mass on the straight beam were compared and validated with those reported in literature. A comprehensive parameter sensitivity analysis was carried out on the beam traversed by moving load with and without the presence of random base excitation and the effects of different beam parameters on the dynamic response of the system were closely examined. Vehicles travelling on suspension bridges induce undesirable vibration, which must be suppressed to a great extent. A half-car planar model moving on a straight beam is considered to study the suppression of vibration and parameter optimization. Attempt is made to design an optimal TMD system to suppress the induced vibration of the bridge due to the moving vehicle, considerably. Furthermore, the effect of non-symmetrical and side-way motion of vehicles on bridges has been considered when both the torsional and flexural vibrations of the bridge-vehicle have been present. Optimum values of the double-acting TMDs parameters have been found to suppress the combined flexural and torsional vibrations of the supporting beam structure. Similar work has been carried out on a uniform homogenous curved beam traversed by either a moving load or a half-car planner model. The effects of the beam curvature angle and the type of loading are closely studied. Optimum values of the two TMDs were obtained to suppress the combined flexural and torsional vibrations of bridges traversed by traveling vehicles. / UOIT

Bayesian model discrimination for time series and state space models

Ehlers, Ricardo Sandes January 2002 (has links)
In this thesis, a Bayesian approach is adopted to handle parameter estimation and model uncertainty in autoregressive moving average (ARMA) time series models and dynamic linear models (DLM). Bayesian model uncertainty is handled in a parametric fashion through the use of posterior model probabilities computed via Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) simulation techniques. Attention is focused on reversible jump Markov chain Monte Carlo (RJMCMC) samplers, which can move between models of different dimensions, to address the problem of model order uncertainty and strategies for proposing efficient sampling schemes in autoregressive moving average time series models and dynamic linear models are developed. The general problem of assessing convergence of the sampler in a dimension-changing context is addressed by computing estimates of the probabilities of moving to higher and lower dimensional spaces. Graphical and numerical techniques are used to compare different updating schemes. The methodology is illustrated by applying it to both simulated and real data sets and the results for the Bayesian model selection and parameter estimation procedures are compared with the classical model selection criteria and maximum likelihood estimation.
