Multilateralismus v německé zahraniční a bezpečnostní politice v letech 1999-2011 / Multilateralism in German Foreign and Security Policy 1999-2011

Schwarzová, Petra January 2012 (has links)
The analysis of the German foreign policy multilateralism and its transformation showed that each examined period evinces clear tendencies which meet three concepts of multilateralism outlined in the theoretical beginning of the thesis. Regardless of some fundamental changes in understanding of multilateralism and its new dimensions, it is not possible to speak about development towards any hegemonic or unilateral policy. What could have been seen in the last analyzed period, was an apparent preference for pragmatic and short-term foreign and security policy. During the nineties, Germany hesitantly normalized its international role by breaking some of the taboos typical of the past decades. Foreign and security policy, however, was still based on pacifist identity and values, which have been replicated for years. This tendency corresponds with the reflexivist approach to multilateralism. Following period witnessed the emancipation of Germany and its interests. The government was neither afraid to decline participation in the operation, which did not have UN approval, nor to end up in isolation. The relationship with the United States cooled down and Gerhard Schröder stressed instead the bilateral alliance with France. European integration was no longer an obligation, but rather became a voluntary...

Multilateralismus v diskurzu: USA, EU a Japonsko / Discourse on multilateralism: USA, EU and Japan

Kolmaš, Michal January 2014 (has links)
The aim of this dissertation, titled "Multilateralism in discourse: USA, EU and Japan" is to pinpoint differences in perceptions of basic policy concepts across various intellectual traditions. The dissertation is based in the presumption that cultural, intellectual and language context are inseparable parts of our perception of reality and terms, through which we describe it. For the interpretation of these cultural differences, the thesis chose three actors with different cultural, historical and language traditions. In their respective discourses, the thesis interpreted the perception of a basic term of international relations - multilateralism. The discursive perception of multilateralism was connected to a theoretical typology of motivation for the priority for multilateralism over other forms of foreign policy behavior - instrumental, moral and social. This typology was tested against the interpretation of multilateralism on two case studies: the War on Terror and the ratification of the Kyoto Protocol. By doing so, the thesis found out that although there is a single shared definition of multilateralism, individual perceptions on the concept's value and role are significantly differing. The United States prefer instrumental logic, the European Union prefers moral logic and Japan oscillates between...

The northward path of ambition : the Northwest Passage and why Canada needs to re-embrace liberal internationalism in the Arctic

Heffernan, Nicolas January 2014 (has links)
Seen as a valuable shortcut from Europe to Asia, the Northwest Passage could become an important shipping route, and Canada wants to be able to control it. However, the current Conservative Party government under Prime Minister Stephen Harper has led an aggressive, complex neorealist approach to securing sovereignty over the Passage consisting of loud diplomacy, military drills, and rejection of multilateral cooperation in the region. But this strategy that perceives Canada as a principle power is not sustainable. The government must accept that Canada simply cannot afford to unilaterally control and develop the Northwest Passage, and a liberal internationalist approach is what is needed. Rather than continuing to fight for international acknowledgment that the Passage is a domestic strait, Canada needs to recognize that the strait can be managed and developed much more effectively if it oversaw a multilateral development effort through the International Maritime Organization. This thesis will consist of five chapters: 1. The history of Canada and the Northwest Passage, 2. The benefits of a more accessible Arctic, 3. Challenges to developing a more open Arctic, 4. Three theoretical perspectives of Canadian foreign policy, 5. Returning to multilateralism: and effective Northwest Passage policy. Powered by...

BRIICS: unilaterální nebo multilaterální cesta politického a ekonomického vzestupu / BRIICS: Unilateral or multilateral path to political and economic growth

Makhalova, Evgeniya January 2011 (has links)
The main goal of this thesis is to identify position of the group BRIICS on the international arena and to determine whether the economic and political rise of concerned economies is potentially hidden in a closer multilateral cooperation or in the separate influences on the world. Moreover, this work aims to answer the question if the BRIICS countries have the potential to dictate their conditions to the international organizations and world public. It also describes the developing countries, their basic categorization and after all the fastest growing economies (emerging markets) are singled out. This paper also examines the impact of the internal social, demographic and political problems on the existence of the organization.

Koncept multilateralismu v německé politice na Balkánu: uznání samostatnosti Slovinska a Chorvatska (1991) a Kosova (2008) / Concept of multilateralism in German foreign policy in the Balkans: comparative case study of recognition of sovereignty of Slovenia and Chroatia (1991) and Kosovo (1992)

Yurchenia, Galina January 2014 (has links)
The diploma thesis "The Multilateralism Concept in German Policy toward the Balkans: Germany's Recognition of the Independence of Slovenia and Croatia (1991) and Kosovo (2008)" deals with the role of the Federal Republic of Germany in the process of recognition of the independence of successor states of Yugoslavia in the context of discussion about transformation of the German multilateralism and normalization of the German foreign policy. The disciplined interpretive case study focuses on selected examples, which were perceived as the most controversial by German and foreign political and social circles: the German pressure on the international recognition of Slovenia and Croatia in 1991, which caused strong criticisms and fears, that the unified Germany would leave the principle of multilateralism in exchange for a unilateral promotion of its national interests; and the recognition of Kosovo in 2008, which meant ignoring the UN resolution 1244. The aim of the thesis is to describe and to interpret motives and the manners of the Germany's acting in the selected causes in detail and to test the hypothesis by Rainer Baumann about transformation of the German multilateralism "towards more instrumental perception of the multilateral cooperation and orientation on material and status-oriented national...
