Excavation of a post-medieval settlement at Druim nan Dearcag, and related sites around Loch Olabhat, North UistArmit, Ian January 1997 (has links)
No / The loch-side settlement of Druim nan Dearcag has been shown by excavation to date to the
16th-17th centuries AD, when it formed part of a dispersed settlement pattern in north-west North
Uist. Elements of this settlement system were subsequently truncated by ridge-and-furrow cultivation
associated with the cleared township or 'baile' of Foshigarry. The site produced rare structural and
artefactual evidence for this period of Hebridean history and may help shed some light on the
development of settlement patterns, house types and land use in the late medieval and post-medieval
periods.

The analysis of the State autonomy after democratization of Taiwan - case study of ¡§Bin-nan industril exploit¡¨Tsai, Long-yue 16 December 2005 (has links)
Abstract
¡§The economic miracle of Taiwan¡¨ is the result of heavy interference of the State into economic development. After democratization, the State is not as convenient as it was with the authoritative period, as far as economic sector is concerned. The case for Bin-nan industrial exploit should be able to increase national income for 1%, but stalled for 11 years, it stays at the origin. It means that the State has lost the autonomy in forming and setting up policies that are closely related to the welfare of the public.
Utilizing the Model of The theory of Claus Offe¡¦s system analysis for exploring the changes in autonomy of state after democratization, aided with case for Bin-nan industrial exploit, we discussed the economic, legitimate, and political sub-system and made throughout interpretation. It is clear that in the highly controversial case for Bin-nan industrial exploit, the State slowed down the pace of development approval in exchange of support of the administration of the public and left the capitalists to communicate and negotiate with the local and social groups. The State expressed its support of the project orally on the one hand and assist in administration operations to avoid capital flee on the other hand, which avoid the non-support of current administration from the public due to full support of capitalist, which may lead to the legitimacy crisis of the administration.
During the economic development process after democratization of Taiwan, the State is still holding the dominating position in the implementation of mercantilism and is still playing the initiative role in economic development and continues in promoting capital accumulation and in pushing industried technology. The will in developing economy has indicated that the State has its preoccupies position, so the State inevitably has dual consideration in the selection of autonomy policy, which is expecting continuous capital accumulation and securing the consent from the people for its legitimate ruling base.

Construction of international news: a study of Libya Crisis coverage in Chinese newspapersZheng, Ellen Yue 01 November 2013 (has links)
In the past three decades, the Chinese news media has experienced great leaps from a propaganda machine to market-oriented industry. Although the state has managed to strengthen the information control, heterogeneity in journalistic value orientations has constructed different media discourses. This thesis discusses the diversity within different news organizations in China, and the influence of state-media dynamics on the quality and role of journalism. Previous literature in the area of media-power relations fQ us on the general landscape of Chinese media shaped by the three forces: the state, the market and the professionalism while neglecting individual cases which contribute for the complexity of the intertwined mechanisms. Supported by the sociological theory of news production and concepts from international relations, this study uses a micro approach to examine the process of international news making in two newspapers. The arguments in this study are based on in-depth interviews with 25 journalists, participant observation, and textual analyses of news reports on Libya Crisis. This study has three major findings. Firstly, the intricate power relations of social forces within China's social context produces much space, as well as obstacles, for the professional practice of journalism. The liberal newspapers keep challenging the state and pushing the boundary of media autonomy while the party organs still serve for maintaining CCP's legitimacy but package the "old wine" in a new way. Secondly, the old Chinese ideology dominated by official communism has been broken up by the emergence of neo-conservatism, old and new-leftism, liberalism and other intellectual discourses which influence the government's decision-making on domestic and international issues. Accordingly, international news reports in newspapers with various interests are manifestations of the divides. Thirdly, the different value preference of newspapers decides the media behaviors. Some choose to speak for the party and help maintain existing social order, while some others serve for public interests. Although both of them practice self-censorship, the former enjoy commercial benefits from seeking refuge from the authority and the latter promote social development by using tactics in news reports. The discrepancy creates space for diversified discourses that added to the complexity of power structures in Chinese media.

The inter-relation of a Chinese family firm and a Chinese family: the case study of the Nanyang Brothers Tobacco Company and the Jian family.January 2015 (has links)
The thesis is a research based on a case study of the inter-relation of a Chinese family firm and a Chinese family: the Nanyang Brothers Tobacco Company and the Jian family. The article will be discussing on the rationale and practices that influence a firm on its ownership, authority, operations and developments; In addition, the ground of these influences towards its family growth, expansion, connection with other families, eventually leading to a lineage evolution. / Throughout the study, I have indicated that the Jian family is a small family. Hence, most of its members have to rely on their paternal and maternal relatives, or the Cantonese fellows to operate Nanyang. In the beginning stage, this group of family members could obtain a position in Nanyang through relationship with the Jian family. However, their career paths in Nanyang are subject to their performances and the changes of relationship with the Jian family at some point in the future. / In spite of ample working experience gained in overseas, most members from the Jian family did not learn about modernization through academic choice. Notwithstanding the evidence that the Jian family has introduced the modern skills and technology into the process of Nanyang’s manufacturing and management, it is unlikely that the authority could forgo the conventional methodology in order to adapt to the advanced formulas. Over and above that, this group of family members regards this phenomenon as a disadvantage towards their position in Nanyang. The threat level of present authority and ownership determines the success rate of the evolution within a Chinese family firm. Modernization could be realized if only the present authority were not affected. However, the evolution within a firm is not a zero-sum game. And therefore, many of the Chinese family firms adapt to the integration of modern and conventional management approach. / The lack of communication efficiency between the local government and Jian family, as well as Nanyang is the fundamental of its political position. Due to its political positioning, Nanyang unavoidably faces difficulties in declining requests from the government and to strive for greater opportunities. Like any other merchants during the Republican Era of China, they could not gain a better treatment under these circumstances. / The research indicated four principles for these Chinese family firms. Firstly, when a Chinese family firm is also a stock corporate at the same time, its ownership of the company’s share will directly impact on its individual authority. Secondly, family members, relatives, and fellows could achieve an easy entry into a Chinese family firm based on its relationship. However, the career paths in the firm are subject to their individual performances and the relationship with the family. Thirdly, the threat level of present authority and ownership determines the success rate of the evolution within a Chinese family firm. Modernization could be realized if only the present authority were not affected. Otherwise, modernization will be denied at the initial stage. Lastly, entrepreneurship is a double-edged sword. It allows a firm to unleash its greatness; or, a significant drawback. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Chong, Henry Ren Jie. / Thesis (Ph.D.) Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2015. / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 277-292). / Abstracts also in Chinese.

A Confident or an Alien: The Hong Kong/Formosa Intellectual Wan-chu Lee¡¦s and His Son Peter Nan-shong Lee¡¦s Views of ChinaLi, Jia-hui 16 February 2011 (has links)
Societies in Hong Kong and Taiwan (Formosa) are not familiar with each as they are
separate colonies taken by Britain and Japan respectively. This study explores a rare
string linking the two communities through Wan-chu Lee and his son Nan-shong.
Their evolving views on China reflect larger historical and social background on one
hand and yet demonstrate agencies in choosing and forming individual choices
regarding both political identities and postcolonial possibilities on other hand. In
particular, their multiple views on China are full of individual judgments mediating
among China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong as well as between global and regional forces.
