Bestuursmatige hantering van studente-afwesigheid by tegniese kolleges

Holtshousen, William Stephen John 12 February 2014 (has links)
M.Ed. / The purpose of this research is to formulate responsible recommendations that will probably contribute to increased class attendance, academic success and job satisfaction of students at technical colleges. On closer investigation it would appear that four role-players, viz. lecturers, students, management staff and employers/parents, should be involved in solving the problem of student absenteeism and poor academic achievement. The contributions these individuals make can be distinguished but not separated. The research comprised a literature and a descriptive empirical study, as well as comments expressed by students and lecturing staff of an experimental technical college. Students' comments on class attendance, academic success of and job satisfaction experienced by students were classified under the following headings: * The lecturers' subject knowledge * Presentation of lectures * Emotional factors experienced by students * The influence exerted by fellow-students. During a two-day working seminar at the experimental technical college the lecturing staff formulated recommendations on the contribution and role of lecturers in guiding students to maximise their potential. It was established that staff development should be regarded as a priority with a view to the improvement of the academic success of both students and lecturers. A descriptive empirical investigation was undertaken to determine the class attendance and academic success of students of the 44 technical colleges which offer Engineering Studies. Particular focus was placed on the experimental college. It was established beyond doubt that there is a positive correlation between the class attendance and academic success of students. It was also statistically proven that the class attendance and success rate of students of the experimental technical college had improved considerably once the management team and lecturing staff of that college started focusing on the achievement and job satisfaction of lecturers and students and the class attendance of students. It is the responsibility of the management team of a technical college to remove all obstacles and to address all problems which may have a negative effect on the class attendance, academic success and job satisfaction of both students and lecturers. Consideration should also be given to a system of participatory management in which staff and student representatives are closely involved. It has also become clear that parents/employers should be more closely involved in order to ensure a greater measure of academic success of students. In conclusion, it can be stated that it is both advisable and possible to improve the students' class attendance, academic success and job satisfaction. In order to achieve this, however, all the role-players, i.e. lecturers, students, the management team and the parents/employers concerned should make a substantial contribution in this regard.

[en] EMERGENCY SERVICE OF RESIDENTS AT FAZENDA DA ESPERANÇA: A RETURN TO LIFE EXPERIENCE / [pt] ATENDIMENTO EMERGENCIAL DOS RESIDENTES NA FAZENDA DA ESPERANÇA: UMA EXPERIÊNCIA DE RETORNO À VIDA

CARLA CRISTINA DE SOUZA DIMARÃES 28 December 2011 (has links)
[en] The research is outlined within the Fazenda Esperança, in the male center located in Manaus, aimed at caring for substance-dependent individuals in the form of therapeutic community. The emergency service is developed by psycologists on duty service in the context of alcohol abuse and / or drugs and is willing to provide those in recovery, the recovery of its history, its existence, to return the possibility of rebuilding and learning in dealing with yourself and others around you. The study was drawn from the documentation referred to psycologists on duty, since all calls are recorded in medical records. The analysis of this material was made according to the comprehensive approach proposed by Amedeo Giorgi, for the apprehension and interpretation of experience in a dialogic relationship, by residents in emergency care. From this, drew up a profile of Fazenda Esperança resident for the year 2009 and that the universe was elected a case study. Thus, it was observed that there are possibilities for recovery of the resident, subject to availability on his part to participate in the dialogic relationship that is established. The experience provides grants to return to society, family and work, giving them rights which had been excluded with the misuse of drugs and /or alcohol, recovering their citizenship and opening horizons for the construction of a new life project.

Religious Attendance, Surrender to God, and Suicide Risk: Mediating Pathways of Feeling Forgiven by God and Psychopathology

Pugh, Kelley C, Toussaint, Loren, Webb, Jon R, Clements, Andrea D, Hirsch, Jameson K 12 April 2019 (has links)
Suicide is a significant public health concern and the second leading cause of death for college-age students in the United States. Although psychopathology (e.g., stress, anxiety, and depression) contributes to suicide risk, individual-level protective characteristics may be preventative. For instance, involvement in religious communities is inversely associated with suicide risk. Other factors, like surrendering to God or a deity (i.e., relinquishing control to God, entrusting one’s life to God’s purposes), are not well understood, but may also be beneficial. Further, psycho-spiritual processes, such as forgiveness, may help to explain the linkage between religious attendance/surrender and suicide. At the bivariate level, we hypothesized that religious attendance (RA), surrender to God (STG), and feeling forgiven by God (FFG) would be positively related; that depression, anxiety, stress, and suicide risk (SR) would be positively related; and that religious and psychopathological variables would be inversely related. In multivariate analyses, we hypothesized RA and STG would be negatively associated with suicide risk, and that FFG (1storder mediator) and psychopathology (i.e., stress, depression, and anxiety; 2ndorder mediators) would mediate this linkage, such that greater religious attendance/surrender would be related to increased FFG and, in turn, to less psychopathology and suicidality. Students from a rural southeastern university (N=249) completed self-report measures, including: a single-item measure of RA; the Surrender to God Scale; Brief Multidimensional Measure of Religiousness/Spirituality – forgiveness items; Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scales; and, Suicide Behaviors Questionnaire – Revised. Pearson-product moment bivariate correlations were utilized to assess for associations between, and independence of, study variables. Multivariate mediation analyses were conducted using Hayes’ PROCESS macro in SPSS, utilizing a 10,000 bootstrapping sample and covarying age, race, and sex. All bivariate hypotheses were supported, in expected directions (p<.001). All multivariate hypotheses in the RA models were supported, such that a total effect, but not an indirect effect was observed for depression (β=-.036, SE=.009,t=-4.104, p<.001), anxiety (β=-.036, SE=.009,t=-4.104, p<.001), and stress (β=-.036, SE=.009,t=-4.104, p<.001), indicating mediation. All hypotheses in STG models were supported, such that a total effect, but not an indirect effect was observed for depression (β=-.092, SE=.016,t=-5.700, p<.001), anxiety (β=-.092, SE=.016,t=-5.700, p<.001), and stress (β=-.092, SE=.016,t=-5.700, p<.001), indicating mediation. In all models, specific indirect effects occurred through the FFG pathway, suggesting the importance of intrinsic, relational aspects of religiosity for the reduction of suicide risk. A specific indirect effect between STG and SR through stress was observed, suggesting that relinquishing control to a “higher power” may be beneficial for stress reduction. Our novel findings highlight several potential mechanisms of action linking religious factors and SR, and may have clinical implications. Therapeutic promotion of religious involvement, when appropriate, and fostering a sense of forgiveness (e.g., via cognitive behavioral therapy, REACH model of forgiveness) may aid in the reduction of psychopathology and suicide risk in the collegiate population.

Truancy as a factor in the delinquency of boys : a case-study of 300 boys in the Preston School of Industry at Ione, California, and comparisons with the truancy problem of the Sacramento City Schools

Husband, V. Pierpont 01 January 1930 (has links)
The study of a question such as that of Truancy must be undertaken on the basis of statistics. It is essentially a matter of investigating and gathering data upon individual cases. The preliminary search for material upon the subject revealed the fact that practically nothing had been written upon it and apparently little inquiry made into the problem. Accordingly, the writer obtained permission from Superintendent O.H. Close of the Preston School of Industry located at Ione, Amador County, California to conduct an investigation of this problem among the delinquent boys committed to that institution. This school is the state correctional institution for boys between the ages of 15 and 21 years. For comparative purposes, an investigation of the problem of truancy in a city school system -- that of Sacramento -- has been made. It is hoped, therefore, that the present study may make some worthwhile contribution to what is already known about the subject.
