Functional movement screen as a predictor of injury in high school basketball athletes

Sorenson, Eric A., 1980- 12 1900 (has links)
xiii, 89 p. : ill. A print copy of this thesis is available through the UO Libraries. Search the library catalog for the location and call number. / Participation in athletics includes an inherent risk of becoming injured that is related to the nature of the games and activities of the players. Current literature reports that approximately seven million high school students participate in sports yearly in the United States and, during the 2005-2006 sport seasons, 1.4 million injuries were reported. Considering this high number of injuries, there is little doubt that definitive research into the determination of factors that might help predict the degree of injury risk associated with sport participation is warranted. Despite common association of variables such as joint laxity, range of motion, strength and balance with injury, these traditional measures have not proven to be reliable predictors of vulnerability. Consequently, attempts have been made to identify practical methods that may better permit identification of individuals who show a high likelihood of injury during athletic competition. This study examined one such system, the Functional Movement Screen (FMS), which utilizes measures of mobility and stability to permit its developers to assert that it can be used to practically and accurately identify vulnerable athletes. Critical data on inter-rater and intra-rater performance were first obtained on a team of athletic trainers to ensure that they could reliably execute the testing methods. Following confirmation of this fact, 112 high school basketball athletes were screened with the FMS and their injuries (non-contact neuromusculoskeletal tissue damage in school-sanctioned basketball) were tracked throughout an entire season. Data analysis to determine if a commonly-used FMS cutoff score of less than 14 out of 21 could identify vulnerable athletes revealed that this value was not significantly related to the likelihood of sustaining an injury. Furthermore, logistic regression revealed that none of the individual predictors (gender, FMS movements, and movement asymmetries) were significant predictors of injury susceptibility. The results indicate that, despite the fact that multiple evaluators and trials can be practically used to evaluate FMS scores in a large group of high school basketball athletes, the test does not appear to be a valid tool in assessing injury risk in this population during an entire season. / Committee in charge: Gary Klug, Chairperson, Human Physiology; Paul van Donkelaar, Member, Human Physiology; Andrew Lovering, Member, Human Physiology; Roland Good, Outside Member, Special Education and Clinical Sciences

Filme condutor obtido eletroquimicamente à partir do Cloridrato de Amiodarona

Araujo, Tatiana da Silva January 2016 (has links)
Orientador: Prof. Dr. Hugo Barbosa Suffredini / Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal do ABC. / The aim of this work was to synthesize a new conductive material from the drug amiodarone hydrochloride. Several carbonaceous materials were used as substrate, as glassy carbon, boron-doped diamond and screen-printed carbon electrode. Platinum electrodes were also used with the same purpose. All synthesized materials were characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), which enabled the visualization of the modifications for all studied materials. Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) were used to promote the qualitative analysis of the samples, indicating the presence of iodine atoms, an element present in the original amiodarone molecule. UV-vis spectroscopy also confirmed the adhesion of the material. Contact angle analysis indicates that the modification has the surface more hydrophobic than the pristine material. Finally, it was possible to conclude that a conductor film from amiodarone hydrochloride was adequately synthesized in all studied substrates.

Technological advances, particularly internet spread and broadband connectivity, brought a new reality of access, production and distribution of information, meaning, thus, new possibilities of learning processes for population. Living in the information society requires minimal digital domain of the use of information and of communication technologies, which directly affect the social life, as well as the production of culture and knowledge. For this to happen in a positive and critical way, we need to provide the basic knowledge that is needed to produce a collective conscious, which, in turn, would be able to use these resources intelligently, knowingly and effectively. Therefore, we consider that it is necessary to develop a digital literacy and, preferably, a digital literate student. In this context, "learning to read" represents gaining ability to access, to analyze, to evaluate and to choose contents that allow recognizing different socially produced knowledge and conceptions. In order to do that, the present research proposes, through a literature review and an experimental study, to conceptualize digital literacy with the objective of understanding that literacy action, to present a thematic set of learning objects for in mass digital literacy, considering the scope of the multi-screen users ("multiscreeners") facilitating informal learning through several screens and available technological devices.

Evaluating the effect of display size on the usability and the perceptions of safety of a mobile handheld application for accessing electronic medical records

Minshall, Simon 27 September 2018 (has links)
INTRODUCTION: While mobile device use by physicians increases, there is an increased risk that errors committed while using mobile devices can lead to harm. This mixed-method study evaluates the effects of screen size on clinical users’ perceptions of medical application usability and safety when interfacing to critical patient information. In this research, two mobile devices are examined: iPhone® and the iPad®. METHOD: Eleven physicians and one nurse practitioner participated in a chart-review simulation using an app that was an end-point to an electronic health record. Screen-recording, video-recording and a think-aloud protocol were used to gather data during the simulation. Additionally, participants completed Likert-based questionnaires and engaged in semi-structured interviews. RESULTS: A total of 105 usability, usefulness and safety problems were recorded and analysed. A strong preference was found for the larger screen when reviewing patient data due to the large quantity of data and the increased display size. The smaller device was preferred due to the devices portability when participants needed to remain informed when they were away from the point of care. CONCLUSION: There is an association between screen size and the perceived safety of the handheld device. The iPad was perceived to be safer to use in clinical practice. Participants preferred the iPad® because of the larger size, not because they thought it was safer or easier to use. The iPhone® was preferred for its portability and its usefulness was perceived to increase with greater distance from the point of care. / Graduate

Student-generated representations in Algodoo while solving a physics problem / Studentgenererade representationer i Algodoo vid lösningen av en fysikuppgift

Bengtz, Oskar January 2018 (has links)
Physics teachers are often faced with the difficult task of representing abstract, formally-defined properties of the physical world (such as forces or energy) for students in a way which goes beyond equations, graphs, and diagrams. In this study, I investigate two cases of university students solving a physics problem while using the digital software, Algodoo, on a large touch screen to examine how students might naturally leverage such technology to create such representations of their own. I find that as student draw scenes in Algodoo, they tend to prioritze a degree of resemblance to the physical world which goes beyond the formal treatment of problems they might have been taught in physics classes. Additionally, as the students recruit physics equation into their solution of the problem, they appear to use Algodoo as a conceptual check for the numerical answer they calculate on the normal whiteboard. In this way - and as has been hypothesized in previous research - I see the potential for Algodoo and similar digital learning environments to act as a bridge between students’ conceptual intuitions of the physical world and the more formal, mathematically-based descriptions used in physics.

The present study aims to analyze and point out the Hybrid TV as a business opportunity for regional broadcasters in Brazil. The advent of Digital TV and SmartTVs, among others, which allow the access of broadband content (using a signal enabled by IP - internet protocol), together with the traditional broadcast transmission (signal enabled by air) present a trend of technological and behavioral convergence that unites the broadcast and the broadband, which can be called "Hybrid TV". This said Hybrid TV arises not only as a possible natural convergence of the culture in today's society, but also as an opportunity for a new way of making and watching television. This study, using a methodology that combines exploratory research and the opportunity recognition model, has identified hybrid TV as a business opportunity for regional open television broadcasters in Brazil, and found in the use of the second screen business opportunities for Audience measurement, strategic advertising, extra content, distance learning (EaD) and edutainment, but also to enhance audience relationship and loyalty.

Isolan, Luciano Rassier January 2012 (has links)
Anxiety disorders are one of the most common forms of psychopathology among children and adolescents and are associated with impairments in academic, social, and family functioning. Although very prevalent, the anxiety disorders are often undetected or untreated. School bullying is common and is associated with a broad spectrum of psychiatric problems, including anxiety symptomatology. The main objective of this study was to examine the prevalence of bullying behaviors in a large communitarian sample of Brazilian children and adolescents and to investigate the association between bullying behaviors and DSM-IV anxiety symptomatology. This cross-sectional study involved completion of a self-report questionnaire about bullying behaviors and their frequency and the Screen for Child Anxiety Related Emotional Disorders (SCARED) that is also a self-report screening tool for childhood anxiety disorders by 2353 students aged 9-18 years from 6 schools located in the catchment area of the Primary Care Unit from the Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre. A total of 22.9% of the sample reported frequent involvement in bullying, as a bully (7.4%), as a victim (5.7%), or as a bully-victim (9.5%). In general, boys were more likely to be involved as bully and as bully-victim, and girls were more likely to be involved as victims. Our findings showed that students involved in bullying behaviors, as victims or bully-victims, were more likely to have higher total scores in SCARED scale, as well as in its subscales than bullies and than uninvolved students. The prevalence of bullying behaviors found in our sample is about average when compared with previous studies described in the literature. Victims and bully-victims, but no bullies, are groups associated with higher anxiety symptomatology. Although prevalence rates of anxiety disorders in Brazilian youth are significant, there is a lack of validated instruments to assess anxiety symptoms and related constructs in children and adolescents. In addition, this study verified the psychometrics properties of two scales that are frequently used in the assessment of anxiety in children and adolescents. The SCARED is a self-report instrument that was originally developed as a screening tool for DSM-IV childhood anxiety disorders. Our study suggested that the SCARED has appropriate psychometric properties and is a useful and reliable instrument to assess anxiety symptoms in Brazilian youth. The Childhood Anxiety Sensitivity Index (CASI) is the principal instrument used to assess anxiety sensitivity in children and adolescents. Anxiety Sensitivity refers to the tendency to fear anxiety-related sensations and is thought to arise from beliefs about their harmful physical, cognitive, or social consequences. Anxiety sensitivity is associated with other anxiety measurements, mainly those evaluating panic symptoms. It is also considered a risk factor for the development of anxious symptomatology and anxiety disorders in youth. Our findings demonstrated an appropriate reliability and evidence of convergent validity in the CASI with the SCARED in a subsample of our study, suggesting that the CASI could be a suitable tool for evaluating anxiety sensitivity in this population. Given the limited mental health resources and the paucity of clinical attention to childhood anxiety disorders in Brazil, these instruments may be a valuable tool for screening Brazilian children and adolescents with anxiety symptoms who may need further assessment and treatment.

The experiment was developed in the Flamingo Farm , situated in the county of Garanhuns – Pernambuco, with an average altitude of 896 m, in the coordinates 08º53’25”S of latitude and 36º29’34”W of longitude, and began on 12/06/2006 and ended on 03/08/2007. The experimental design adopted was a completely randomized blocks with three replicates and five treatments. The First Fouu Treatments( 25%; 50%; 75%; 100% of crop evapotranspiration (Etc) managed with an irrigation interval of two days) , with univariate analysis , simple regression and response surface. In the fifth treatment ( managed through tensiometers and 100% of Etc) a residue analysis in relation tothe fourth treatment( 100% Etc) was done. The yield characteristics and crop quality were evaluated for the first four treatments, and the percent residue analysis for the two last ones. Along the time, the irrigation depths studied influenced the stem diameter , the yield per square meter , the bud diameter and the relative growth rate. The bud length, fresh weight and dry weight were influenced at distinct time periods by the irrigation depths applied. The maximum sellingprice of the product was obtained with the application of an irrigation depth corresponding to 77% of Etc. The increasing levels of irrigation depths linearly reduced the number of blind and dead stems. At post-harvest, the variable shelf life showed a decreasing trend with increasing irrigation depths. The treatments influenced in a quadratic manner the accumulated yield given as stems per square meter, of the A80 grade , with maximum levels at about 68% of ETc. The residue analysis indicated that the treatment 100% of ETc was more efficient than the treatment 100% of ETc managed by tensiometers, in the evaluation of the response variables: stem diameter, bud length, bud diameter, fresh and dry mass, yield of stems per square meter, selling value and cummulative yield of the A80 grade. For the variables stem plus bud length and relative growth rate, the treatment 100% ETc managed through tensiometers was indicated as the most efficient. However , for the variables shelf life and blind and dead stems there was none more efficient treatment than the other ones.
