El artículo destaca la relevancia de considerar al primer capítulo de Paisajes peruanos, texto seminal del polígrafo peruano José de la Riva-Agüero y Osma, como el prólogo de todo el libro, pues en la disposición de este —y no solo en su contenido— pueden encontrarse sus grandes temas: la reunión de la naturaleza y la historia del Perú, de lo indígena y lo español. Riva-Agüero contrasta dos perspectivas del Cuzco y descubre en la contemplación del paisaje la esencia de la nación peruana. Al hacerlo, no solo se convierte en el historiador que él mismo añoraba en La Historia en el Perú, sino que genera —mediante procedimientos literarios, imaginativos, connotativos— un mito patrio. / The article highlights the importance of considering the first chapter of Peruvian polygraph José de la Riva-Agüero y Osma’s Paisajes peruanos (Peruvian Landscapes) as the prologue of the entire book, as in the disposition of this and not only in its content, one recognizes its great topics: the meeting of nature and history of Peru, the indigenous and the Spanish. Riva-Agüero contrasts two views of Cuzco and discovers in the contemplation of the landscape the essence of the Peruvian nation. In doing so, he not only becomes the historian who he himself missed in La Historia en el Perú (History in Peru), but generates—through literary, imaginative and connotative procedures—a patriotic myth.

It might seem obvious to state that Paisajes peruanos, one of José de la Riva-Agüero’s threegreat books, should be a travel book, as it is , in effect, the wording of a trip really made. Not whithstandingly, not every trip finishes in the form of a textual genre know as a “travel book”. Using the three dicothomies proposed by Luis Alburquerque for identifying a travel book (“factual” as opposed to “fictional”, “descriptive” as opposed to “narrative”, and “objective” as opposed to “subjective”), this paper proves the generic filiation of Paisajes peruanos. What this paper does not prove is why Riva-Agüero used specifically this particular genre tocristalize his idea of “integral Peruanity”. / Parece obvio que Paisajes peruanos, uno de los tres textos más importantes de José dela Riva-Agüero, sea un “libro de viajes”, al ser, en efecto, el registro de un viaje realmente acontecido. Sin embargo, no todos los viajes se expresan en el género textual denomina- do “libro de viajes”. Mediante su determinación como “factual” frente a “ficcional”, como “descriptivo” frente a “narrativo” y como “objetivo” frente a “subjetivo” –los tres grandes binomios establecidos por Luis Alburquerque para el género– se prueba la filiación genérica de Paisajes peruanos. No se responde totalmente, sin embargo, a la pregunta de por quéescoge Riva-Agüero un “libro de viajes” para cristalizar su idea de la peruanidad integral.

El presente trabajo tiene como propósito analizar la descripción del paisaje en la obra póstuma de José de la Riva-Agüero y Osma (1885-1944): Paisajes peruanos. Este libro de viajes nos permite explorar como el autor construye un paisaje en base al discurso histórico de esta obra. Trataremos de demostrar que las descripciones del paisaje, que conjuga lo histórico y lo geográfico, le sirven a Riva-Agüero para evidenciar que la variedad de características del hombre peruano deriva de los retos que le pone el paisaje. Tomamos este trabajo del polígrafo peruano, miembro de la generación del novecientos, como pieza fundamental para entender si esta obra en particular es reflejo de su pensamiento a lo largo de su vida o solo de los primeros años de la misma. Paisajes peruanos parte de un punto de vista histórico, pero se puede abordar su discurso desde una perspectiva multidisciplinaria. Para esta investigación utilizaremos la edición prínceps de Paisajes peruanos, así como su epistolario y parte de su producción académica. Con ello, la tesis busca sustentar las razones por las que el autor propuso una idea de nación que reúne múltiples orígenes y explorar las ventajas del uso de las nuevas tecnologías en la investigación de libros de viajes. / The purpose of this paper is to analyze the description of the landscape in Paisajes peruanos, a posthumous publication of José de la Riva-Agüero y Osma (1885-1944). In this book of travels we will explore how the author built a landscape based on the historical discourse of this work. We will try to show how Riva-Agüero's descriptions of the landscape, which combine the historical and the geographical, serve to demonstrate that the variety of characters of Peruvian man derives from the challenges posed by the landscape. We have taken this work by the Peruvian author, who was a member of the nineteenth century generation, as a fundamental piece in understanding whether this particular work is a reflection of his thinking throughout his life or only of the first years of his life. Paisajes peruanos starts from a historical point of view, but its discourse can be approached from a multidisciplinary perspective. For this research we consulted the notebooks and the preliminary typed edition, from which the first edition of Paisajes peruanos would be born, as well as his epistolary and part of his academic production. With this, the thesis seeks to support the reasons why the author proposed an idea of a nation with multiple origins and to explore advantages of the use of new technologies in the investigation of travel books.
