A translation and edition of the Sacrorum Parallelorum Liber Primus of Franciscus Junius : a study in sixteenth century hermeneuticsJudisch, Douglas January 1979 (has links)
In his preface to the Sacrorum Parallelorum Libri Tres, Junius expresses the confidence that, if he has not attained the goal in writing the book which he yearned to achieve, he has at least pointed out to others the way of proving more successful. As the first monograph on the use of the Old Testament in the New, the Sacri Paralleli opened up new exegetical territory into which hosts of explorers and, indeed, settlers have since moved. The earlier scouts in this region often remind us that they are travelling in the pioneering footsteps of Franciscus Junius. Thus, Andreas Kesler in the seventeenth century makes use of the Sacri Paralleli, as does the great Surenhusius of Amsterdam in the eighteenth century. Even as recently as a hundred years ago Eduard Bdhl, in the historical introduction to his own dissertation on the Old Testament citations in the New Testament, wrote: "Dass ein Mann wie Franciscus Junius, welcher mit Tremellius das berühmte lateinische Bibelwerk herausgab, viel Gutes bietet, lasst sich erwarten". Yet, more recent surveys of past literature on the bi-testamental passages omit any mention of the original spade-work in the field. Ellis, for example, begins his summary of "the more direct study of NT quotations" with the notes which Drusius wrote around 1594. No account of such research, however, can justly pass over the thorough work of Franciscus Junius. Some have considered it, with good reason, the most important book of one of the most influential exegetes in the Age of Orthodoxy. As Cuno observes, the Sacri Paralleli were truly epoch-making in the history of exegesis. The present study of the Sacrorum Parallelorum Liber Primus begins with a rather full account of the life of Junius for two reasons. First, there is no delineation of his life available in English longer than the brief article in the New Schaff-Herzog Encyclopedia of Religious Knowledge. Secondly, the life of Junius not only is very interesting, but also sheds much light on the rationale of the Sacri Paralleli. There follow discussions of this rationale, the history of the Sacri Paralleli and the various editions, and the hermeneutical principles employed by Junius in the Liber Primus. In the course of his investigation of the several editions of the Sacri Paralleli, the author has examined all copies of the book which he could locate in the public repositories of Scotland and so hopes that his treatment may prove useful to the rare book librarians of the collections concerned. The translation of the Liber Primus was executed on the basis of the first folio edition (1607) of the works of Junius, this printing being a reliable, specimen of the text and the earliest copy available in the Library of the University of St Andrews. Some minor textual corruptions, however, in the 1607 edition have been corrected on the basis of the original edition of 1588. Likewise, the Biblical and patristic citations which appeared in the margins of the original edition have been noted as marginal references here, rather than being into the text in the manner of the folio editions (which sometimes match these citations to the wrong, sentences in the text). The translation here, nevertheless, follows the paragraph divisions of the folio printings, since such divisions are so few in the original edition. The third volume of this dissertation contains several pertinent appendices: The first is a photographic copy of the specimen of the original edition of the Sacrorum Parallelorum Liber Primus in the possession of the Library of New College, Edinburgh. Mention has been made in the course of this appendix if a note relating to a given page occurs in the "Errata", listed at the end of the copy of the Sacri Paralleli used here. Copies of the 1607 printing of the Sacri Paralleli are available in so many British libraries that to provide a copy of the Liber Primus of that edition here would be superfluous. The second appendix is a photographic copy of the "Praefatio" to the Sacri Paralleli (New Col- lege specimen again). The Roman numeral at the bottom of each page has been supplied here to facilitate reference to this "Praefatio" in the course of this study. There follows an annotated translation of the "Praefatio".

Scalable Data Management for Object-based Storage SystemsWadhwa, Bharti 19 August 2020 (has links)
Parallel I/O performance is crucial to sustain scientific applications on large-scale High-Performance Computing (HPC) systems. Large scale distributed storage systems, in particular the object-based storage systems, face severe challenges for managing the data efficiently. Inefficient data management leads to poor I/O and storage performance in HPC applications and scientific workflows. Some of the main challenges for efficient data management arise from poor resource allocation, load imbalance in object storage targets, and inflexible data sharing between applications in a workflow. In addition, parallel I/O makes it challenging to shoehorn new interfaces, such as taking advantage of multiple layers of storage and support for analysis in the data path. Solving these challenges to improve performance and efficiency of object-based storage systems is crucial, especially for upcoming era of exascale systems.
This dissertation is focused on solving these major challenges in object-based storage systems by providing scalable data management strategies. In the first part of the dis-sertation (Chapter 3), we present a resource contention aware load balancing tool (iez) for large scale distributed object-based storage systems. In Chapter 4, we extend iez to support Progressive File Layout for object-based storage system: Lustre. In the second part (Chapter 5), we present a technique to facilitate data sharing in scientific workflows using object-based storage, with our proposed tool Workflow Data Communicator. In the last part of this dissertation, we present a solution for transparent data management in multi-layer storage hierarchy of present and next-generation HPC systems. This dissertation shows that by intelligently employing scalable data management techniques, scientific applications' and workflows' flexibility and performance in object-based storage systems can be enhanced manyfold. Our proposed data management strategies can guide next-generation HPC storage systems' software design to efficiently support data for scientific applications and workflows. / Doctor of Philosophy / Large scale object-based storage systems face severe challenges to manage the data efficiently for HPC applications and workflows. These storage systems often manage and share data inflexibly, without considering the load imbalance and resource contention in the underlying multi-layer storage hierarchy. This dissertation first studies how resource contention and inflexible data sharing mechanisms impact HPC applications' storage and I/O performance; and then presents a series of efficient techniques, tools and algorithms to provide efficient and scalable data management for current and next-generation HPC storage systems

CORPORA PARALLELI E LINGUISTICA CONTRASTIVA: AMPLIAMENTO E APPLICAZIONI DEL CORPUS ITALIANO - RUSSO NEL NACIONAL'NYJ KORPUS RUSSKOGO JAZYKA / Parallel corpora and contrastive linguistics: enlargement and applications of the Italian-Russian corpus in the Nacional'nyj Korpus Russkogo JazykaNOSEDA, VALENTINA 19 September 2017 (has links)
Corpus Linguistics - which exploits electronic annotated corpora in the study of languages - is a widespread and consolidated approach. In particular, parallel corpora, where texts in a language are aligned with their translation in a second language, are an extremely useful tool in contrastive analysis. The lack of good parallel corpora for the languages of our interest - Russian and Italian - has led us to work for improving the Italian-Russian parallel corpus available as a pilot corpus in the Russian National Corpus. Therefore, this work had a twofold aim: practical and theoretical. On the one hand, after studying the essential issues for designing a high-quality corpus, all the criteria for expanding the corpus were established and the number of texts was increased, allowing the Italian-Russian parallel corpus, which counted 700.000 words, to reach more than 4 million words. As a result, it is now possible to conduct scientifically valid research based on this corpus. On the other hand, three corpus-based analyses were proposed in order to highlight the potential of the corpus: the study of prefixed Russian memory verbs and their translation into Italian; the comparison between the Italian analytic causative "fare + infinitive" and Russian causative verbs; The comparative analysis of fifteen Italian versions of The Overcoat by N. Gogol'. These analyses first of all allowed to advance some methodological remarks considering a further enlargement and improvement of the Italian-Russian parallel corpus. Secondly, the corpus-based approach has proved to be useful in deepening the study of these topics from a theoretical point of view.
