The Role of the Speech Language Pathologist in Concussion Management: A Survey Analysis

Johnston, Elise 06 September 2018 (has links)
Primary objective. The goals of this project were to review the current literature regarding the role of the speech-language pathologist (SLP) in concussion management and to conduct a survey of SLPs with experience in concussion care to determine their current practices and perspectives. Design and methods. An online survey consisting of 41 questions was emailed to SLPs throughout the U.S. and Canada. Responses were anonymously collected from 60 SLPs, and the responses were analyzed. Results and conclusions. Results showed that SLPs who work in concussion care are generally knowledgeable and confident despite how recently concussion has become part of SLP practice. There has been improvement in the types of assessment tools used in concussion cases, but there is a need for more sensitive instruments. Findings point to the need for increased availability of concussion training for SLPs and the need for continued research into current clinical practices.

Inclusive Education: Related Services Providers' Perceptions of their Roles and Responsibilities

Jordan, Nina L 01 January 2020 (has links)
Studies that expressly define the roles of related service providers in inclusive schools are limited. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to examine the lived experiences of related service providers, specifically occupational therapists, physical therapists, and speech and language pathologists, who practice in an inclusive education setting. An objective was to examine their attitudes and beliefs toward inclusion. This study used role theory as the theoretical framework. Tenets of role theory were used to explain how related service providers have come to understand their roles and responsibilities in the inclusion setting. Purposeful and snowball sampling yielded 10 participants who participated in semi-structured interviews. Data were analyzed using a multistep, phenomenological analysis method. The participants' descriptions of their involvement in inclusion revealed 7 themes: Expert/consultant, evaluator, direct service provider, mainstreaming, methods of collaboration, member of a multidisciplinary team, and documentation. Findings suggest a strong correlation between the perceived roles of the participants and the generic roles reported in the literature. Three themes emerged from their descriptions of their attitudes toward inclusion: general definition of inclusion, social/behavioral effects on inclusion, and barriers to inclusive education. The participants' views on the behavioral and social impact of inclusive education were mixed. Findings inform stakeholders about the day to day experiences of related service providers in an inclusion setting. This study represents a steppingstone toward increasing awareness of school-based professionals' contributions to the educational experience of special education students.

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Speech-Language Pathologists’ Perceptions of Infants with Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome

Fabrize, Lauren 01 August 2019 (has links)
Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the characteristics, assessment, and treatment of infants with Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) as perceived by Speech-Language Pathologists (SLP) and whether it differed from those of other Neonatal Intensive Care Unit populations. Methods: A secure web-based questionnaire with 62 questions collected information on NAS, caseloads, treatment environment, and demographics. Twenty-six respondents initiated the survey; 42% completed most or all questions. Response analyses included descriptive and nonparametric inferential statistics. Results: Infants with NAS were on the caseloads of 73% of respondents. The majority (79%) only saw infants with NAS and feeding problems. Primary problems included incomplete or increased time to complete feeds, increased/excessive/irregular sucking rates, and reflux. Working on teams, respondents provided assessment, treatment, and education of infant feeding and state. Conclusion: Growing demand for SLP intervention with infants with NAS is likely to persist if opioid use continues to increase as projected.

Impacto de variáveis médicas e da organização laboratorial na qualidade do rastreamento do câncer do colo uterino no Brasil

Salomé, Luciana Gusmão de Andrade Lima January 2019 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: The uterine cervix's cancer maintains high rates of incidence and mortality in Brazil, despite of the fact that the Programa Viva Mulher have expanded the access to the Papanicolaou’s test. The screening of this neoplasm by the cytological test was responsible for a significant reduction of events in developed countries, which have well stablished quality control systems. However, this reality cannot be seen in developing countries. Therefore, this study focuses on the analysis of the Brazilian pathologist's view of the cytological test and the medical criteria needed to improve the quality of screening. For this reason, a descriptive observational study was conducted, including a qualitative analysis with interviews with pathologists and the application of a questionnaire, about the structure of services that perform cytological examinations in the country. The results clearly showed the concern of this professional with your gradative removal from the screening program, and the need for a more careful quality control. A critical relationship was also observed between the failures of cytological screening, the performance of the pathologist and the structure of the services responsible for this exam. In this way, the study identified the imperative need for continued education of the professionals responsible for cervical cytological examination, in addition to the implementation of a comprehensive and judicious external quality control. / Doutor

SPEECH-LANGUAGE PATHOLOGISTS’ PERSPECTIVE ON LANGUAGE DISORDER IN THE JUVENILE JUSTICE SYSTEM

Spiller, Sydney 01 May 2020 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to discover the current awareness of speech-language pathologists (SLPs) regarding the link between language disorder and the juvenile justice system. It is to consider how speech-language pathology, as a profession, think about the implications of language disorder on life outcomes as well as determine the need for speech-language intervention within the juvenile justice system. A Google Form was created and distributed to current speech-language pathologists that have their Certificate of Clinical competence, and have experience working with students in the educational setting. Results suggest SLPs are aware of the link between LD and the juvenile justice system as well as the aspects of language found difficult for these young offenders, but training and professional development on this topic is minimal. Participants report an interest in interprofessional practice and are positioned to become advocates for young offenders with LD in the juvenile justice system.
