In this way, we consider the historical dimension that develops an ethnographic approach to the historical sources, especially those regarding the XIXth century, presenting the Paumari people in this set and the manatee fishing practices in the Purus river. Moreover, we treat other dimensions, as feeding, that reveal the importance of manatee for Paumari society. Other dimension in this work is focused on the social position that manatee occupies in the Paumari socio-cosmology. In this sense, the Chapter II approaches some questions about the positions of “boss” and “owner”, with which the manatee is identified by Paumari. Finally, we face other dimension about the execution of manatee fishing, analyzing the universe of practices, the mechanisms used to achieve a good fishing, and the interactions with the landscape, where the manatee lives. / Esta pesquisa tem como objetivo principal tratar da relação dos Paumari com o peixeboi, destacando, principalmente, três dimensões que nos chamaram a atenção no decorrer da construção deste estudo. Deste modo, temos uma dimensão histórica que tende para uma abordagem etnográfica das fontes históricas, principalmente as do século XIX, apresentando, sobretudo, os Paumari neste cenário bem como da prática da pesca do peixe-boi na região do rio Purus. Além disso, tratamos de outras dimensões onde o peixe-boi aparece com destaque (alimentação), revelando sua importância no âmbito da sociedade Paumari. Outra dimensão abordada neste trabalho, diz respeito à posição social que o peixe-boi ocupa na sociocosmologia Paumari. Neste sentido, o capítulo II aborda algumas questões relacionadas à posição de “patrão” e “dono”, com as quais o peixe-boi é identificado pelos Paumari. Por fim, temos uma dimensão que trata do exercício da pesca de peixe-boi, onde destacamos o universo da prática e os mecanismos empregados para a realização de uma boa pescaria, bem como a interação que se tem com a paisagem em que habita o animal.

This work explains how basketry´s confection is related to cosmogonic myths and the spiritual world. We investigate the meaning of these objects in cosmology, in the feminine ritual of initiation and how its meaning changed for paumari people. Our hypothesis is the basketry express deep symbols of mythology and imaginary . We use diferents techniques of research, as interviews, participant comment and myth analysis. Eliade (1963), Godelier (2001), Ribeiro (1995) and Ricoeur (2007) are authors who inspire the writing of this work. This thesis also presents a significant sample of patterns of paumari basketry and analyses on mythology, imaginary and the artistic production of this people / O objeto da pesquisa é a cestaria do povo indígena Paumari, que vive na região do Rio Purus, no Amazonas, Brasil. O trabalho explica como a cestaria, cuja confecção está relacionada aos mitos cosmogônicos e ao mundo espiritual, é significada nas comunidades. Investigamos o sentido dos objetos de palha na cosmologia, no ritual de iniciação feminino e a significação atribuída a eles, pelos paumari que se converteram à religião evangélica. Nossa hipótese é de que a cestaria expressa símbolos profundos relacionados à mitologia e ao imaginário. Realizamos estudo de caso, técnicas de pesquisa como entrevistas, observação participante e análise de mitos. Eliade (1963), Godelier (2001), Ribeiro (1995) e Ricoeur (2007) são autores que inspiraram a escritura deste trabalho. Esta tese apresenta uma amostra significativa de grafismos paumari e também análises sobre a mitologia, o imaginário e a produção artística deste povo
