Pender House: a conversion and addition to an existing building, a student residence, in Downtown Vancouver

In the pursuit of originality, some interventions consciously stand in opposition to the existing. The approach I've taken is more holistic; rather than pursue the novelty of the moment, I've taken the stance that creativity in art and architecture is part of a continuum. With that in mind, I've attempted in this project to make this evolution apparent by bridging the existing to the new without reverting to historical mimicking. My design is not a heritage preservation project. I wanted to take what exists, re-think it, and build upon it. My proposal is for a downtown student residence for both individuals and families. It would take advantage of new developments in the area such as the new S.F.U. conference center, the new B.C.IT. complex, and other institutions already in place such as the S.F.U. at Harbor Center, and the Vancouver Community College. This student residence would be an inter-university residence, accepting students from all of these educational institutions as well as U.B.C. and Emily Carr. Its aim would be to establish greater social and academic links between the city's post-secondary educational institutes. This project feeds on what has already started to happen in the area and can re-introduce a residential population to the city core, generating new life and new activity which in turn will contribute significantly to the wealth of the urban fabric. In short, one can imagine the formation of a lively downtown university quarter. My proposed residence would be one seed sown in this larger vision. Besides feeling that I felt the project should be a dense urban scheme, it appeared imperative to me that my design foster a real sense of belonging, permitting the development of a small community within a community. In addition to public commercial space, the new program demanded realms of privacy, and more importantly a core, or center, around which a community could begin to form. From this organizational idea of a core the design started to take shape. The existing building opened up in the rear toward a court. A lane intersected it providing access and making it a space that could be both place and pathway for activity. The program turned towards this space marking it as the center, and animating it with the activity of daily life. The existing urban aesthetic informed my design language. Urban context is characterized by wall as a dominant element, tall vertical spaces, steel stairs and railing, hanging wires, and a strong demarcation between front, sides and rear accentuated by a change of brick at the corners. All these elements were to some degree absorbed, assimilated and reinterpreted in the work. The relationship of 'part to whole' became an important part of the process. Likewise, terminology in how I started to speak and think about the project. Words like old vs. new stopped being used as they aggravate the dichotomy between the parts. An effort was made not to mimic the existing building which would have produce a neo-historic building, this was not my goal. An effort was made not to objectify the existing building, rendering it a precious object. Nor did I deliberately attempt to contrast it, this would be counter-productive to the concept of the whole. Contrast aggravates the gap between then and now, disavowing integration and synthesis. My approach was rather one of complementing and complicity. Complicity is an interesting concept because it implies that two or more parties or parts come together toward a common goal, It also implies a dialogue. This is very different from contrast, for example, that is unidirectional. A dialogue receives and gives, and both parts form and are informed.

Sociopoetizando a construção das ações de autocuidado no envelhecimento saudável: uma aplicação da teoria de Nola Pender / The construction of self-care action in the healthful aging: application of the Nola Penders theory: sociopoetic study

O envelhecimento populacional no Brasil sobreleva a necessidade de organização de serviços de saúde, sendo a estimulação do autocuidado uma estratégia privilegiada para orientar programas de promoção da saúde para pessoas idosas. Face à busca das mais variadas formas de viver bem, abrem-se fronteiras possibilitando o surgimento de modelos de envelhecimento saudável. Partindo do pressuposto de que as pessoas possuem uma dimensão imaginativa no acrescentar qualidade aos anos de vida, delimitou-se como objeto de estudo o imaginário de um grupo da terceira idade na construção das ações de autocuidado. Objetivos: descrever a poética sobre as ações de autocuidado construídas por um grupo de pessoas idosas; e analisar os significados (conceitos/confetos) atribuídos por essas pessoas ao envelhecer. Utilizou-se como marco referencial a Teoria de Promoção da Saúde de Nola Pender. Trata-se de pesquisa descritiva, qualitativa, considerando o paradigma naturalista. Foi aplicado o método sociopoético por meio do dispositivo analítico Grupo Pesquisador, composto por 11 idosos participantes da Unati da Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, que desenvolveram a investigação no período de outubro a dezembro de 2008, mediante as técnicas de pesquisa: Dinâmica de Corpo como Território Mínimo e a Vivência de Lugares Geomíticos. Foram questões norteadoras do estudo, respectivamente: Como vocês se cuidam para o caminho do bom envelhecer? E Como é o autocuidado para o envelhecer saudável se ele for um lugar geomítico?. Os dados produzidos foram submetidos à análise categorial, dos estudos sociopoéticos. No estudo filosófico, observou-se haver coexistência da autoimagem realista revelando que os idosos estão mais aptos aos desafios da vida, pois seu comportamento é coerente com a ideia que faz de si, além de intenções, aspirações e tendências. O classificatório ressaltou as dicotomias das ações de autocuidado tendo: O Autocuidado através dos Limites e Possibilidades; e Transcender para Experienciar o Dom do Envelhecer; O transversal revelou O Autocuidado como Reconhecimento das Necessidades de Saúde, enquanto no surreal sobrelevam-se Aceitar o Novo para um Renascer Saudável; Perseverança para Conviver com o Envelhecimento; e Procurar Assistência pode Desvelar Temores para a Finitude do Viver. Conclui-se que a compreensão do imaginário dos sujeitos de pesquisa mediada pela teoria de Pender permitiu identificar fatores que influenciam e motivam o autocuidado para comportamentos saudáveis. Assim, o grupo vislumbra para seu futuro uma imagem de envelhecer mais dinâmica, adotando para si próprio um viver mais autônomo, ativo e bem-sucedido. À contribuição do estudo, propõe-se aos enfermeiros a apropriação de conceitos teóricos como forma de traduzir a realidade e demonstrar alternativas viáveis de ações de cuidado/saúde, bem como a utilização das práticas de dinâmicas de criatividade e sensibilidade nas atividades assistenciais. / Aging speed up process in Brazil raising up the necessity of enlargement of public politics and health services organization, being the incentive of self-care one of the best strategy to guide health programs for aged people. In view of search of the most varied forms of living well, models of healthful aging appeared. Considering that people has an imaginative dimension in the art of living, in adding quality to the years of life, the imaginary of a third age group in the construction of the self-care actions was delimited as study object. The objectives of investigation are: to describe the poetical on the self-care actions constructed by age people group; to analyze the meanings (concepts/confetos) attributed by these people to make old. Nola Penders Theory of Health Promotion was used as reference. This is a descriptive, qualitative research, considering the naturalistic paradigm. The sociopoetic method was applied through the Searching Group analytical device, composed for 11 Unatis aged people of the University of the State of Rio de Janeiro, who had developed the investigation, in the period of October to December/2008 with the following techniques of research: Body Dynamic as Minimum Territory and the Experience of Geomythics Places (bridge, road, fail, labyrinth, top, well, threshold and track). These had been the questions which guide the study, respectively: How do you take care of yourself in the way for a good aging? How is the self-care for the healthful age if it were a geomythics place? The produced data had been submitted to category analysis, considering the sociopoetics studies. In the philosophical study, it was observed a coexistence of the realistic self-image, disclosing that the aged people are fitted to the life challenges; therefore its conduct is coherent with the idea that makes of itself, besides intentions, aspirations and trends. The classification emphasizes the dichotomies in actions of self-care with the analytical categories: The Self-care through the Limits and Possibilities; and Transcend to experience the gift of aging. The transversal disclosed: The Self-care as Recognition of Health Necessities; while in the surreal is standed out: To accept the New to be born again healthful; Perseverance to coexist with aging, and; To look for assistance can Expose Fears for the finish of live. It is concluded that the understanding of the imaginary of the objects of research, based on the Penders theory, allowed us to identify factors, which influenced and motivate the self-care for healthful behaviors. Thus, the group considers for its future an image of more dynamic age, adopting for itself a more independent, active and well-succeeded life. With reference to the contribution of the study, the appropriation of theoretical concepts as the way to show the reality and to demonstrate alternatives of actions for care/health is proposed to nurses. As well as the inclusion and the use of dynamic of creativity and sensitivity practices, in help activities.
