UM SISTEMA DE STORYTELLING TEXTUAL PARA GERAR HISTÓRIAS QUE DESPERTEM SURPRESA, SUSPENSE E CURIOSIDADE / A WRITTEN STORYTELLING SYSTEM FOR GENERATING STORIES THAT AROUSING SURPRISE, SUSPENSE AND CURIOSITY

Albuquerque, Alexandre Cordeiro de 14 September 2011 (has links)
Writing stories that please a target audience is not an easy task for their authors. The creation of stories by a computer system that are able to entertain and catch the reader s attention is an even more complex task. This work details a computer solution that produces structured narratives to arouse three cognitive feelings on readers: suspense, surprise and curiosity. To achieve this goal, the concepts of the Structural-Affect Theory of Stories were used. This theory states that these emotions might be evoked through the manipulation of the event order of a narrative plot.

Statistical analysis software for the TRS-80 microcomputer

Isbell, Robert Paul 09 1900 (has links)
Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited. / This paper documents the development of a statistical analysis package for the TRS-80 microcoraputer. The package is comprised of six interactive programs which are generally divided into topical areas. The major emphasis is on exploratory data analysis and statistical inference, however, probability and inverse probability distributions are also included. The programming language is TRS-80 Level II BASIC enhanced by the input/output commands available through the ESF-80 (Exatron Stringy Floppy) mass storage subsystem. With the modification of these few commands, the package is compatible with most floppy disk operating systems designed for the TRS-80 Model I or Model III microcomputers. This statistical analysis capability implemented on a relatively inexpensive system provides a useful tool to the student or the trained analyst without ready access to a mainframe computer system. / Major, United States Marine Corps

Effect of graphene oxide on the thermal properties of bovine hide powders

Luo, Lan, Zhang, Hao, Liu, Jie, Tang, Keyong 28 June 2019 (has links)
Content: Graphene oxide (GO) is one of the most interesting nanomaterials in recent years. In order to explore its potential application in leather making process, a study on evaluating the effects of GO on the thermal stability and decomposition kinetics of bovine hide powders (HP) was performed by thermogravimetry. It was shown that the GO-doped hide powders (GO-HP) exhibit better thermal stability than those of raw hide powders. The kinetic and mechanism analysis of the decomposition stage used an integrated procedure involving model-free methods and universal master-plots method. Various methods were employed to calculate the activation energy of the fibers, including the Flynn-Wall-Ozawa (FWO), Modified Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose (MKAS) and Friedman methods. The activation energy values of GO-HP and raw hide powder were found to be 240.5 and 184.7 kJ/mol, respectively. Comparison of the experimental and theoretical master plots of various reaction mechanisms showed that when the conversion values are below 0.5, the most probable decomposition mechanism for HP and GO-HP is D1. Above 0.5, the decomposition mechanisms of HP and GO-HP are most probably described by A3 and R3 models, respectively. Take-Away: Graphene oxide (GO) doped hide powders (GO-HP) exhibit better thermal stability than those of raw hide powders. The activation energy values of GO-HP and raw hide powder were found to be 240.5 and 184.7 kJ/mol, respectively.

Archeologie města Mostu (čp. 45-47). Vybrané kapitoly I / Archaeology of the town of Most (Nos. 45-47). Selected chapters

Kabeláčová, Petra January 2021 (has links)
The submitted master's thesis deals with the issue of urban archaeology, specifically on the example of Most plots No. 45-47. It is based on a summary of knowledge gained during rescue archaeological research, which took place between 1977 and 1978. An integral part is also the analysis and evaluation of material culture finds together with the ceramic inventory, which became the basis for the chronological sequence. The question of possible production activities that could be operated within the plots is further addressed based on the found artifacts. The final part thematically focuses on the progress and character of development in the plots in the 13th - 16th century, considering other contexts - within the city of Most, archaeology of cities in the Czech lands and archaeology of cities in Central Europe. Key words urban archaeology, medieval plots, housing, outbuildings, everyday life

Comparison of Time Series and Functional Data Analysis for the Study of Seasonality.

Allen, Jake 17 August 2011 (has links) (PDF)
Classical time series analysis has well known methods for the study of seasonality. A more recent method of functional data analysis has proposed phase-plane plots for the representation of each year of a time series. However, the study of seasonality within functional data analysis has not been explored extensively. Time series analysis is first introduced, followed by phase-plane plot analysis, and then compared by looking at the insight that both methods offer particularly with respect to the seasonal behavior of a variable. Also, the possible combination of both approaches is explored, specifically with the analysis of the phase-plane plots. The methods are applied to data observations measuring water flow in cubic feet per second collected monthly in Newport, TN from the French Broad River. Simulated data corresponding to typical time series cases are then used for comparison and further exploration.

A comparative study of six Xhosa radio dramas

Makosana, Nomkhitha Ethley 11 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA)--University of Stellenbosch, 1991. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study is based on the comparison of six Xhosa radio dramas spanning the period 1987 and 1988. The main objective is to investigate the strengths and weaknesses which manifest themselves in the dramas. The dramas are compared with respect to the six structural elements of drama viz., theme, plot, characterization, time and space, and the techniques of production.Themes are studied to establish whether there have been any developments as far as the choice of themes is concerned in Xhosa radio dramas or whether there has been stagnation. Also given is a brief literary history of the themes broadcast in the Xhosa radio. The analysis of the plot structure is also done to identify the areas where they met the requirements successfully as well as where they failed to. The dramas are analysed according to the traditional approach Le. the exposition, complication, climax and the denouement. With regard to characterization, the characters are classified according to the function they perform viz., the protagonist, antagonist, tritagonist and confidante. They are also analysed according to their individual nature Le. whether they are static or dynamic, mono- or multidimensional etc. Techniques that the playwrights have used in the portrayal of their characters are also examined. The aspects of time and space are also discussed, to investigate the artistic skills of the different dramatists in handling the time and space relations. Time is viewed with respect to the following: order, duration, frequency, tempo and the presentation of the time structures. Space is discussed with respect to the following: type, function, and the techniques of localisation.A critical comparison of the production techniques used by these different playwrights is explored, the focus being on the microphone, sound effects and music. The examination conducted in the study basically revealed that there is little development in Xhosa radio dramas. The themes that are broadcast are mainly for entertainment and consequently have little intellectual depth. There is also a lack of innovation which is shown by the repetition of the same themes. The playwrights also lack skill as far as plot construction is concerned. The plays are devoid of conflict The absence of conflict in the dramas has an effect on characterization. It has given rise to weak antagonists in the dramas. Lack of focus regarding the main character is one of the faults that is evident in the dramas. Because of the fact that all characters are on the level of importance, it becomes difficult to pin-point who the focal character is. Finally, the Xhosa radio dramas discussed in this thesis revealed that there is latent potential in the Xhosa dramatists and the producers. It is therefore necessary that they should be motivated towards research on the subject and consultation with people who are knowledgeable in this sub-genre. Such actions could be of assistance towards the improvement of skills and techniques needed in the writing of the radio drama / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie studie is gebaseer op die vergelyking van ses Xhosa radio dramas wat strek oor die tydperk 1987-1988.
