The problem of this study was selected aspects of public community college non-credit law enforcement training programs in Texas. Purposes of the study were: (a) to examine the development of police academies at community colleges in Texas; (b) to provide normative data describing
the academies in terms of background, organization and administration, adequacy of facilities and equipment, personnel, student policies and practices, the program administrator's perceptions of internal and external support, involvement of outside forces and the extent of the program, and (c) to provide data which community colleges can use in organizing and developing police academies.

The Effectiveness of a Stress Reduction Program for Police OfficersCoulson, Jesse E. 05 1900 (has links)
A group of veteran police officers was studied in relation to the effectiveness of a stress reduction program which utilized a cognitive-behavioral approachto training. A new instrument, the Coulson Police Job Stress Discussionaire, (CPJSD), was field tested. Two control groups, a veteran group who received no stress reduction training and an academy group which received standard basic training but not the stress reduction program, were compared on pre—test and post-test Profile of Mood States (POMS) mood disturbance cores.
Contrary to the main hypothesis formulated, there were no significant differences found between the three groups on post-test POMS measures of mood disturbance when compared with pre-test measures. The construct validity of the POMS for use with police officers is challenged. The specific format utilized is discussed and suggestions are offered for future study design. Specific difficulties inherent in the study of police groups are examined. The usefulness of the CPJSD for police job stress reduction program is suggested, as is the need for further field testing of this instrument.

This study was carried out on a group of police officers. In an experimental investigation the following method of stress management was used, namely a primary mental health education programme. An at-risk population in the society was identified namely the South African Police Force, and sixty four people from the target population of one hundred and twenty eight candicate-officers 'were selected for this study. A survey of the target population was done and these sampling units met the following criteria: they were all white warrant officers in training in the South.African Police Force from the same level of training, who had all obtained a national diploma in police administration. Estadual de SeguranÃa PÃblica do Estado do CearÃ. Tratou-se de uma pesquisa
qualitativa, com carÃter comparativo, pautada nos referenciais da sociologia e das
mudanÃas curriculares dos cursos de formaÃÃo do policial militar do CearÃ. Como
procedimentos metodolÃgicos foram utilizados principalmente pesquisas
bibliogrÃficas sobre a seguranÃa pÃblica, a violÃncia e a formaÃÃo policial, coleta e
anÃlise de dados sobre violÃncia, com observaÃÃes de acontecimentos histÃricos da
formaÃÃo policial cearense. No primeiro capÃtulo do trabalho faz-se uma anÃlise dos
acontecimentos que permitiram se chegar a construÃÃo das polÃcias militares no

analisar a instituiÃÃo policial. No segundo capÃtulo do trabalho foi abordado o cenÃrio

mudanÃas. / The present work investigates the evolution of the knowledge carried out in the
Police Academies with a concern to show which factors influenced the changes to
reach the current training model implemented in the State Academy of Public
Security of the State of CearÃ. It was a qualitative research, with a comparative
character, based on the sociology references and the curricular changes of the
training courses of the military police of CearÃ. As methodological procedures,
bibliographical research on public security, violence and police training, collection and
analysis of data on violence, with observations of historical events of the police
training in CearÃ, were used. In the first chapter of the article, an analysis is made of
the events that led to the construction of military police in Brazil with the
problematization of violence as a determining social factor for analyzing the police
institution. In the second chapter of the study the current scenario of Brazilian society
and the current training model employed in the police academy of Cearà were
discussed. In the third part, an analysis of the curricula of initial training of the military
police of Cearà is made. The books of Marcos Rolim, ClÃudio Beato Filho,
Theodomiro Dias Neto, IgnÃcio Cano and others were used as readings, as
organizers and authors CÃsar Barreira, GlaucÃria Mota Brasil and modernity scholars
who deal with the theme police with emphasis on modern training as something to Be
unveiled and explored. In the third chapter an analysis of the changes promoted in
the initial training curricula of the military police of Cearà is made.
Finally, in the final considerations, an analysis is made of the changes made in public
security in Cearà after the re-democratization of Brazil and the consequences for
homicides and police training of these changes.

Abstract
The Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, Act 108 of 1996, demands a fundamental
reassessment and transformation of the nature and style of policing in South Africa, from
denying the human rights of the majority of South Africans during the ‘apartheid era’ to
gaining the trust and respect of all. This includes changing the basic assumptions of
individual police officers with regards to the organisation and its environment. Based on the
comments of a representative sample (1 168) of newcomers to the South African Police
Service (SAPS) during the 2005 calendar year, this article explores the impact that the SAPS
basic training institutes have in changing the attitudes of new recruits that conform to deviant
themes in police culture. The research found significant evidence that most of the SAPS basic
training institutes, excluding the Bisho SAPS Basic Training Institute, only served to either
maintain or strengthen newcomers’ attitudes in support of police culture solidarity, isolation
and cynicism.

This study explores the views of managers of Police Stations and trainees in one of
forty-two (42) Policing Areas in the South African Police Service. It probes the
feelings of the managers (herein referred to as Station Commissioners) and trainees
regarding training methods used during In-service training.
The study starts by analysing the environment in which the SAPS operates. The
Management Problem identified is the lack of transfer of training at station level. This
problem exists in the SAPS at the time when it grapples with transforming from a
militaristic form to a service organisation. It is the time when the organization's
training interventions are very critical for their members to providing better service.
In finding out the views of Station Commissioners and trainees, a communication
survey was conducted in all police stations found in the Pretoria Area. A
questionnaire was administered to two groups from this Area. One was a group of
Station Commissioners and the other made of trainees that attended training
programmes at least twelve months before the survey.
The questionnaire consisted of instruments probing views on off-the-job training and
on-the-job-training methods as well as organisational climate instrument. The
organizational climate instrument was a modified version of Likert & Likert (1976)
scale.
The trainees and Station Commissioners positively viewed goal setting and decision-making
at these police stations. Leadership, motivation and communication were the
dimensions of organisational climate that need improvement or reinforcement.
Both methods of training, that is off- and on-the-job, were deemed necessary in the
SAPS. The act of travelling long distances before the training was identified as a
problem for off-the-job training. It was also highlighted that both methods are
