How to live with pop : contextualizing the early work of Sigmar Polke, Gerhard Richter, and Konrad Lueg

On October 11, 1963, artists Gerhard Richter and Konrad Lueg held the event “Leben mit Pop: Eine Demonstration für den kapitalistischen Realismus” (Living with Pop: A Demonstration for Capitalist Realism) at the Berges furniture store in Düsseldorf, Germany. Many scholars have treated this event as an image, useful only in outlining the trajectories of the later successful careers of Gerhard Richter, Konrad Lueg, and Sigmar Polke. Few have attempted to contextualize this event in its social, historical, and political settings or to consider its effects on and relationship to the audience at the event. In this thesis, I resituate “Living with Pop” in terms of its experiential effects and its socio-historical context and extend my investigation of “Living with Pop” to the contemporaneous paintings and drawings of Richter, Lueg, and Polke. I argue that their artworks, which parody and question domestic tropes of the postwar era, reveal the complexities and ambiguities underlying the notion of West Germany’ s Wirtschaftswunder, or “economic miracle.” I examine how Polke, Richter, and Lueg explored artistic and national identities, a postwar culture of consumerism, contemporary modes of communication, and theories of culture and aesthetics in the late 1950s and early 1960s. To investigate the relationships between artistic creation, artistic identity, and contemporary daily life, I use domestic design exhibitions, advertisements, the journal Magnum, and a few select texts on contemporary society and culture by Jürgen Habermas and Theodor W. Maturation of Practices

The disparate concepts of Pop Art and abstract painting heavily influence the scope of my work. Finding a link between these two concepts has been the focal point of my studio practices. The apex of my process is the focus on commercial imagery as abstract form. The merging of these two concepts presents a complex composition of balance, color and information. This thesis explores the various concepts as well as influences that have propelled the evolution of my work. It chronicles the steps I have taken in my quest to articulate my conceptual ideas. By describing the works and defining their characteristics, this analysis gives further insight to my perception as well as process.

The Lobby The Lobby är en marknadsplats, skapad av AMF Fastigheter med syfte att agera testplattform för den framtida detaljhandeln. Marknadsplatsen är en fysisk plattform där pop-up konceptet, upplevelsen och event används med helt ny innebörd för att attrahera kunder och varumärken att ställa ut på The Lobby. Syfte och forskningsfrågor Denna fallstudie om The Lobby syftar till att undersöka vilka primära faktorer som krävs för att skapa en marknadsplats där upplevelsen och pop-up konceptet är centralt samt kartlägga dess potentiella roll i framtiden. Med grund i detta syfte har två forskningsfrågor tagits fram: Vilka är de viktigaste faktorerna vid utformandet av en marknadsplats som The Lobby?  Vilken roll kan denna typ av marknadsplats komma att ha i framtiden? Metod Denna studie har baseras på en kvalitativ fallstudie av marknadsplatsen The Lobby. Forskningsansatsen är deduktiv med induktiva inslag. Det empiriska materialet består av åtta semistrukturerade intervjuer där respektive respondent har en direkt koppling till The Lobby. Förutom intervjuer har även två observationer genomförts. Teori Den teoretiska referensramen behandlar termerna köpcentrum, pop-up butik och kundupplevelse. I denna studie motsvarar köpcentrum en marknadsplats där flertalet aktörer möts på samma plats. Teorin kommer även redogöra för pop-up butikens innebörd samt dess fördelar. Slutligen behandlas kundupplevelsens roll inom detaljhandeln. Slutsatser Genom att ta hänsyn till marknadsplatsens varumärke, kontrakt för pop-up butikerna, teknologi, kundernas behov av socialisering och upplevelse kan marknadsplatsen optimeras och skapa återkommande kunder. Om en marknadsplats som The Lobby kommer ha en fortsatt central roll i framtiden återstår att se, däremot kan det konstateras är att pop-up butikens fördelar blir allt fler. / The Lobby The Lobby is a marketplace, created by AMF Fastigheter with the purpose of finding new alternatives for the future of the retail industry. The marketplace is a physical retail platform where the pop-up concept, experience based marketplace and events will be used to attract customers and brands to The Lobby. Purpose and research questions This case study about The Lobby aims to investigate the primary factors which are required to create an experience based marketplace where the pop-up concept is central. Furthermore what purpose this kind of marketplace will hold in the future. Based on the purpose, the following research questions were formed: What are the main factors while developing a marketplace like The Lobby?  What role can this type of marketplace have in the future? Method This study is based on a qualitative case study on The Lobby in Stockholm, Sweden. The study has a deductive approach, with some elements of inductive approach. The empirical data consist of eight semi structured interviews and two observations. All the respondents has a connection to The Lobby. Theory The theoretical references used for this study are shopping mall, pop-up store and experience based marketplace. The theory of shopping mall will be studied as a marketplace where stakeholders are cooperating in one place. The theory will also describe the pop-up stores pros and cons and also the role of the experience based marketplace in the retail industry. Conclusion If a marketplace like The Lobby, where customers, retailers and partners have the opportunity to try new things, will continue to play a central role in the future, remains to be seen. One thing that can be said, however, is that the advantages of the temporary store are increasing.

Évaluation du risque sanitaire lié à l’ingestion involontaire de sol : étude des propriétés du sol sur la biodisponibilité relative des PCB / Assessment of health risk from involuntary soil ingestion : Study of soil characteristics on the relative bioavailability of PCB

Les polychlorobiphényles (PCB) et notamment les congénères les plus présents dans les sites et sols pollués, les PCB non dioxin like, constituent un danger sanitaire potentiel. Le risque associé est exacerbé chez le jeune enfant (6 mois à 3 ans) du fait, notamment, de son comportement exploratoire qui, de plus, a lieu durant une période critique de la croissance. L'objectif principal de cette thèse a été de caractériser l'impact des caractéristiques du sol sur la biodisponibilité relative des PCB. Les résultats in vivo ont montré l'impact des caractéristiques de la matière organique des sols sur la biodisponibilité relative des PCB par l'emploi de sols artificiels. Plusieurs matières organiques standardisées ont été testées allant des matières organiques solubles (acides fulviques, acides humiques) à une matière organique à la condensation maximale : le charbon actif. Ces éléments ont permis de montrer de larges variations de biodisponibilité relative allant d'une biodisponibilité relative nulle (charbon actif) à 100% (acide fulvique). Ces données soulignent l'importance de la condensation de la matière organique dans la rétention des PCB durant les processus digestifs. L'impact de caractéristiques (contenu en carbone organique, argile, black carbon, pH, concentrations en PCB) de sols historiquement contaminés sur la biodisponibilité a ensuite été évalué. Le taux de carbone organique et en black carbon sur la rétention des PCB. Toutefois la biodisponibilité relative demeure supérieure à 45% quel que soit le sol étudié. Les PCB sont donc peu retenus par le sol. Ainsi, l'exposition aux PCB via l'ingestion de sol semble proportionnelle à la quantité ingérée / Polychlorobiphenyls (PCBs) and, overall, non-dioxin-like PCBs (NDL-PCBs) the most abundant congeners in contaminated environmental matrices, constitute a potential health hazard. This risk is even more acute for young children (6 month to 3-year-old) because of their mouthing activities and because this exposure occurs during a critical part of their growth. The main objective of this thesis was to characterise the impact of soil's characteristics on the relative bioavailability of PCBs. The impact of the soil organic matter characteristics on the relative bioavailability of PCBs was assessed using artificial soils. Several standardised organic matters were tested ranging from soluble organic matters (fulvic acids, humic acids) to one organic matters highly condensed, activated carbon, a model of black carbon. These elements lead to show important variations in terms of relative bioavailability from 0% (activated carbon) to 100%, maximal relative bioavailability (fulvic acids). These findings highlight the importance of OM condensation in terms of PCB retention during the digestive processes. Then, the Impact of organic carbon, black carbon and clay content, pH, NDL-PCBs concentrations in historically contaminated soils on bioavailability and bioaccessibility was assessed. These approaches tended to show the importance of OC and BC content on retention of PCBs. Relative bioavailability was found to be higher than 45%, whatever the soil. Thus, PCBs retention in contaminated soils appears rather limited. Finally, exposure to PCBs via soil ingestion appears proportional to the quantity ingested

Busco nas transformações e nos desdobramentos históricos do jornalismo a maneira como as lógicas do pop foram se implicando nele. Proponho, assim, uma perspectiva jornalística específica para entender essas dinâmicas, o jornalismo pop: voltado à cobertura da cultura pop, pautando acontecimentos engendrados por uma lógica intensamente midiática e comercial, mas que não se encerra aí. Constato que existem, em um contexto de crise sistêmica instaurada pela cultura digital que atravessa as lógicas jornalísticas, sete categorias para pensar a cobertura do pop no país – e que muitas vezes se interprenetam através de estratégias de produção diversas: a cobertura jornalística em torno de produtos que se desdobram da música pop, das celebridades, da cultura geek/nerd/otaku, de produções audiovisuais como filmes e séries, das novelas e do humor e a geral. Existem, nessas possibilidades, os vínculos de produção que são perpassados pelas práticas das/dos fãs – podendo serem institucionalizados no sentido de se tornarem (micro) empresas ou não – e os políticos, que envolvem um olhar crítico através de marcadores como o sexo/gênero, a raça e a sexualidade para as produções da cultura pop. O Papel Pop, no que se refere à cobertura noticiosa, movimenta-se através de todos esses focos, estando alocado no que eu entendi como uma macrotegoria: a cobertura da cultura pop de uma maneira mais ampla e geral. No entanto, há uma predominância da música pop feminina nas matérias e notícias, assim como o corpo editorial também remete a marcadores dissidentes da masculinidade heterossexual cisgênera. Visando desdobrar os sentidos acionados pelo jornalismo pop em questão, recorro à metodologia da Análise de Construção de Sentidos em Redes Digitais, que tem como pressuposto os movimentos de mapeamento de processos semióticos em rede, a elaboração de constelaçãoes de sentidos e o desenvolvimento de inferências sobre elas. Através de perspectivas dos estudos queer, notei, assim, a emergência de sete constelações de sentidos: Linguagens do Vale, Transviadices, Feminismos, Heteronormatividades Racismos/Multiculturalismos, Representações e Enfrentamentos Políticos. Elas sinalizam a maneira como o jornalismo pop do Papel Pop configura-se como uma territorialidade semiótica singular na cobertura da cultura pop, que rompe com pressupostos do masculino que atravessam o jornalismo hegemônico e que vai além da feminilidade que pode ser associada ao jornalismo cultural, sendo, portanto, queer. / The research search understands, through the senses triggered by Papel Pop, as relations between journalism, pop culture and queer studies. I seek in the transformations and historical developments of journalism the way in which the logics of pop have been implied in him. I propose, therefore, a specific journalistic perspective to understand these dynamics, pop journalism: aimed at the coverage of pop culture, setting forth events engendered by an intensely mediatic and commercial logic, but that does not end there. I note that there are, in a systemic crisis context established by the digital culture that runs through the journalistic logic, seven categories to think the pop coverage in the country - and often interpenatre through various production strategies: media coverage around products that are deployed from pop music, celebrities, geek/nerd/otaku culture, audiovisual productions like movies and series, novels and humor and the general. There are, in these possibilities, the production links that are permeated by the practices of the fans - they can be institutionalized in the sense of becoming (micro) companies or not - and the politicians, who involve a critical look through markers like sex / gender, race and sexuality for pop culture productions. The Papel Pop, as far as news coverage is concerned, moves through all these focuses, being allotted in what I understood as a macrotegory: the coverage of pop culture in a broader and more general way. However, there is a predominance of female pop music in stories and news, just as the editorial body also refers to dissident markers of heterosexual masculinity cis. Aiming to unfold the senses triggered by the pop journalism in question, I turn to the methodology of the Analysis of Sense Construction in Digital Networks, which has as a presupposition the movements of mapping of semiotic processes in the network, the elaboration of sense constellations and the development of inferences about they. Through the perspectives of the Queer studies, I thus noticed the emergence of seven constellations of meanings: Valley Languages, Transviadices, Feminisms, Heteronormativities, Racisms / Multiculturalisms, Representations and Political Confrontations. They signal the way Papel Pop’s pop journalism configures itself as a singular semiotic territoriality in the coverage of pop culture, which breaks with the assumptions of the masculine that crosses hegemonic journalism and goes beyond the femininity that can be associated with cultural journalism, being, therefore, queer.

O presente trabalho investiga a obra de Pedro Almodóvar Caballero, cineasta espanhol; mostrando que sua principal marca autoral é trabalhar com elementos da Cultura Pop, fundamentalmente a citação, pastiche e a paródia; mesclados com sua experiência pessoal, da infância em La Mancha, e da busca pela liberdade na Madri, de La Movida, do final do franquismo e da transição para a democracia. Usando a teoria da paródia, como fundamentação teórica, demonstram-se como os filmes de Almodóvar dialogam com textos fílmicos os mais variados, incorporando-os à sua narrativa e imprimindo nela uma marca original e internacionalmente reconhecível. Traça-se uma filmografia crítica da recepção de seus filmes, no contexto em que surgiram no cenário da cultura marginal underground dos anos 1970, e seu pleno desenvolvimento e maturidade no circuito comercial, a partir da década de 80. Centrando-se a análise em Todo sobre mi madre, demonstra-se o nível de diálogo estabelecido com a obra de John Cassavetes, Federico Fellini e na retomada de sua própria obra, como fonte de citação, como o diálogo estabelecido entre La flor de mi secreto/Todo sobre mi madre. / This study carries out research into the work of Pedro Almodóvar Caballero. The great spanish director has, like autor mark, working with icons of Pop Culture, essentially quoting and parody; mixing with his own childhood personal experience, in La Mancha, and the freedom conquered within the Madri of La Movida; post-franquism period of transition throw democracy. Based on the parody theory, this work shows like the movies of Almodóvar talk/exchange subjects with others movie images of diferent kind, getting them incorporated on its narrative, providing his movies of an orginal and internacional hallmark. It sets a critical filmografy of how was the reception of his films, within de underground culture they had born, in the ´70, and its total development and maturity on the commercial circuit of the earlier ´80. The central point of the analysis is the movie All about my mother, fixing the level of the dialogue established with John Cassavetes` Opening night and some characters of Federico Fellini, like Cabiria and Gradisca; and so on, the recycle of the own Almodovar`s previous works, like source of quote, like the exchange made between The flower of my secret and All about my mother.

Se entendermos o pop rock como componente fundamental da música popular, é possível tomar as suas manifestações, vivências, social idades e produções como determinantes para a compreensão e explicação da estrutura social em que ocorrem e das identidades de quem a produz e reproduz. Mais ainda, se a sociologia não se interessa por essências, mas por processos, parece-nos que o campo do pop rock, ainda que recente, será uma matriz essencial de análise das representações sociais e da memória colectiva. É neste axioma que entroncamos os objectivos estrutura dores da investigação que esteve na base desta Dissertação. É também aqui que advogamos o desenho do nosso objecto de base, a abordagem do rock como prática social enquanto produção e reprodução societal no âmbito da sociedade contemporânea, designada mente na sociedade portuguesa entre 1980 e 2010. O escopo analítico situou-se nas suas vertentes mais alternativas (consumo, mediação e produção), ou, se quisermos de uma forma mais fiel à realidade portuguesa, "vanguardistas", considerando-o como um elemento central na estruturação e reestrutu¬ração das culturas populares urbanas. Consideramos o mundo do rock na sua plenitude, com os seus diferentes agentes, práticas, contextos, lógicas de produção e de reprodução social, numa problemática próxima dos "mundos da arte" tal como é desenvolvida por Becker (1988) ou Crane (1992), complementada por uma sociologia da mediação tal como a defende Hennion (1993), sob um pano de fundo da teoria dos campos de Bourdieu (1992; 1996; 2004).
