A silent scream : trauma and madness in the early works of António Lobo Antunes

Rato Rodrigues, Ricardo January 2016 (has links)
Intersection between Literature and Health Sciences, the current thesis is dedicated to the analysis of the early work of influential Portuguese novelist António Lobo Antunes. His multifaceted roles - as psychiatrist, soldier and writer - inform his literary production, in particular the semi-autobiographical novels Memória de Elefante (Elephantine Memory), Os Cus de Judas (Land at the End of Nowhere) and Conhecimento do Inferno (Knowledge of Hell), as well as his letters and chronicles. The thesis looks at the different ways in which Lobo Antunes' oeuvre articulates the different perspectives within the contexts of mental institutions and war. Issues such as trauma (individual and collective), PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) and the cathartic role of writing are analysed in detail. The brutal and traumatic realities of war and post-colonial trauma are intertwined in the novels in the intricate and complex writing that is characteristic of Lobo Antunes. His writing ethos elicits an active participation from the reader - an act of participatory reading which aims for the broadening and better understanding of human experiences via empathy. The writer's importance is not only relevant for the Portuguese context. Despite his close attention to the troublesome tradition of Portuguese psychiatry (i.e. the invention of lobotomy by Dr. Egas Moniz, who was awarded the Nobel prize in Medicine for such discovery) and the country's recent belligerent and oppressive history (the dictatorial regime and the Colonial War), Lobo Antunes' novels have universal qualities, in the Joycean tradition of the 'universality of the local', which gives his work validity and urgency.

Uma didática da invenção : re-envisioning the material world in the poetry of Manoel de Barros

Smith, David Peter Woodhead January 2016 (has links)
The poetry of Manoel de Barros has often been characterized as part of a regional canon. This characterization belies its importance not only within the confines of the Brazilian canon, but as a contribution to C20 literature in general. Barros's poetry explores themes which are crucially important to navigating our existence in the modern world, and this thesis focuses on his engagement with the natural and material world. Drawing on theories from post-modern critical thinking and eco-criticism, I demonstrate how Barros's poetry can not only be read in the light of these critical idioms, but frequently expands upon or confounds them, revealing poetry as a form of modern critique - and indeed perhaps the most pertinent and incisive form of critique available to us when dealing with questions of materiality, reality and the natural world.

Bozzo, Gabriela Cristina Borborema. January 2019 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: Abstract: The study of the literary production of Dulce Marie Cardoso unveils a detailed work on the form by the author, which ranges from the ironic language to the remembrance through the stream of consciousness. Such characteristic reaches the apex on the novel Os meus sentimentos - our corpus - composed by a period alone, extended over three hundred pages. The objective of the dissertation is to prove the hypothesis that, in the book, the theme - which is the nonbelonging - is constituted especially by the following categories: language, character, narrative, focalization and time. Through the narrative voice of the protagonist, the fixed internal focalization, and the temporal shuttle accompanied by the stream of consciousness such sentiment is elaborated. The last two resources - temporal inversions and stream of consciousness - build the consciousness of the character and also what can be considered as subconsciousness. Furthermore, we intend to define the nonbelonging and understand which relationship the novel production by Dulce Maria Cardoso has with the contemporary Portuguese literature. In view of the structural disposition of such categories of the chosen narrative, it is still intended to verify if they play a similar role in other works of the Portuguese writer. In order to achieve these objectives, we have a theoretical critical basis divided into four main lines: definition of nonbelonging, relying upon George H. Mead in Mente, self e sociedade, Abraham Mas... (Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Mestre

January 2019 (has links)
Is there a text in this class? This doctoral thesis has as its aim to analyze the wealth of critical acclaim of the aforementioned work in the Brazilian academia, by means of engaging in the study of dissertations and theses accepted from 1984 to 2014, and applying the idea of interpretive community, concept created by Stanley Fish in his Is There a Text in this Class? (1980). According to Fish (1938, Rhode Island/USA), theorist and English professor of many American Universities, interpretive communities stand for different readers applying the same reading strategies, as much constructive as interpretive, and sharing a common opinion about the meaning of a given work. The thesis to be verified in this research is the possibility that Saramago himself, through media and his other novels, had affected how the critics, or at least some of them, read and understand his work. The justification for this research was born from the perception that critics whose subject of study is the work of the Portuguese writer sometimes share the same opinions about this and other novels by him and, according to the hypothesis of this thesis, it happens so because these critics belong to a same interpretive community, one that has as its main influence the words by Saramago Himself. The methodology of analysis of this thesis is going to take place as follows: firstly, the concept of interpretive community will be explained as construed by Fish; after that, the works of which the corpus is made of are going to be displayed in chronological fashion... Diálogos contemporâneos com Eça de Queiroz e Fradique Mendes /

Bressan, Inês Cardin. January 2013 (has links)
Abstract: This thesis is a study about the resumption of the character Fradique Mendes de Eça de Queiroz in some contemporary works. Three among them were selected, which have intertextual connections with the work A Correspondência de Fradique Mendes (The Correspondence of Fradique Mendes), as well as its main character. They are: O Enigma das Cartas Inéditas de Eça de Queiroz (The Riddle of the Eça de Queiroz Unpublished Letters), (Marcos, 1996), whose narrative tries to elucidate the authorship of some Eça‟s letters, mixed with characteristics of detective novel; Os Esquemas de Fradique (The Schemes of Fradique) (Venâncio, 1999), which is a constant search to reveal the existence of two offsprings of Carlos Fradique Mendes from the point of view of a narrator journalist; and Autobiografia de Carlos Fradique Mendes (Autobiography of Carlos Fradique Mendes) (Fernandes, 2002), which brought to life Carlos Fradique Mendes by a resurrection elixir. The personal motivations for the development of this research are found into the inexistence of more vertical studies about the last phase of Eça de Queiroz, called The Last Eça, and the extensive revisitations of his work more than a hundred years after his death. Yet, the character of Carlos Fradique Mendes have repeatedly appeared in some Universities‟ syllabus, turning the creation of Eça de Queiroz time proof. Encapsulated in three chapters, the theories over intertextuality were developed in the first one, from its beginning to current time, including notions over the creation of characters. Therefore, studies of Bakhtin, Kristeva, Jenny, Genette, Hutcheon among others were used as theoric platform. The second chapter was centered into the phase called The Last Eça and introduced an outlook of this writer‟s path, specifically in a time when he published on the newspapers what later will be called The Correspondence of Fradique Mendes.

January 2019 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: The Portuguese poet Antônio de Fonseca Soares (1631-1682), also known as Frei Antônio das Chagas, became famous for his practice of romances, poems constituted by assonant quatrains (redondilhas maiores) with varied themes. According to the testimony of his contemporaries, Fonseca is an authority in the practice of this form with a multitudinous production found in manuscripts. This poetic form receives the same name from the vulgar languages, linked to a sensitivity that we would call "popular" today. During the seventeenth century, however, this 'popular' sensibility was also appropriated by learned men, which led to the diversification of the romance as a receptacle of topical and erudite structures, such as poems of mourning (endechas) or amorous lyric related to the poetry of portrait. It is sought here to describe this seventeenthcentury practice in the light of this relationship between elocution and vulgar invention and its appropriation by literates like Antônio da Fonseca Soares, configuring a "vulgar decorum". For the study of that practice, in the first place, it is important to point out some methodological assumptions, such as the notions of authorship and attribution in the seventeenth century manuscript culture. One should also examine an aspect related to orality, which is related to the poem's sonority and strophic variation and the relation as popular expressions. In addition, an attempt was made to understand aspects of ordinary Fonseca's decorum, in two respects, one that is an ingenious manifestation, which works the concept in ornate constructions, and the second, an epistolary manifestation, through letter-romances (romances-carta). This manifestation of a set of themes (inventio) and their organization (dispositio) constitute a more classic notion of 'genre'. In a single variable, the poetic form...
