This thesis takes its point of departure in the change of emphasis in the field of environmental and sustainability education (ESE) towards the inclusion of social and human development issues. The theoretical frames of the thesis are poststructural and postcolonial theories, from which different writings, central concepts and approaches are drawn. The thesis also builds on a pragmatist and anti-essentialist approach which argues that we socially construct the meaning of right and wrong and what works better in our lives on the current problematic or situation. The results are presented in four studies and the thesis has three purposes. The first purpose is to describe and investigate theoretical perspectives that take a critical stand on and offer alternatives to universal and consensus-oriented approaches. This purpose is the central focus in the first and second studies. The first study examines the re-emergence of classical cosmopolitanism and contemporary views of the perspective with the intent of discussing its potential for the development of education for sustainable development (ESD). The second study aims to clarify the philosophical problem of addressing universally sustainable responsibilities and values in environmental and sustainability education. The second purpose is to investigate teachers’ ethical reflections in a first-hand intercultural experience. This purpose is dealt with in the third study, where seven Swedish upper secondary school teachers facing particular conflicts of interest and moral situations during a study visit to Central America are interviewed. The third purpose is to investigate how teachers deal with the complex issues of intragenerational equity or social justice in their teaching. This is dealt with in the fourth study, which explores how teachers integrate issues of social justice into their teaching of global sustainability. My hope is that this thesis will contribute to the discussion about how teachers can develop a conscious and critically informed approach to the teaching of environmental and sustainability issues and also contribute to theoretical and philosophical discussions about universalism, normativity and global ethics within environmental and sustainability education research.

Comment l'art contemporain du sud de la Méditerranée est-il perçu et reconnu par les experts du monde de l'art occidental ? Telle la question à laquelle nous nous sommes intéressée. Pour y répondre, il nous a fallu comprendre les liens qu'entretiennent l'art et la mondialisation et discuter les apports des études culturelles et postcoloniales à ce sujet. A partir de ce questionnement initial nous avons rassemblé et étudié les discours hégémoniques intervenant dans le champ de la culture, des processus de négociations, des politiques de différences et des modes d'identification des artistes du Sud selon une vision ethnocentriste et identitaire. Pour mener à bien notre recherche, nous avons conduit deux études. La première porte sur une étude thématique des intitulés d'expositions internationales concernant l'art contemporain du sud de la Méditerranée (Europe et États-Unis de 1999 à 2014). Nous soutenons l'idée que les sujets d'expositions véhiculent un discours qui traduit des idées culturelles d'hégémonie occidentale et des orientations concernant le genre, l' ethnicité, la classe, confinant le statut de l'artiste sud-méditerranéen à un rôle «périphérique ». La seconde enquête qui est de nature compréhensive, traite des croyances des artistes du sud de la Méditerranée et de leurs positionnements par rapport aux marqueurs identitaires dans la construction de catégories ethniques. Quel regard portent-ils sur ces marqueurs, leur accordent-ils une certaine reconnaissance ? Cette étude a été conduite avant et après les mouvements révolutionnaires du printemps arabe. / How is contemporary art of the southern Mediterranean perceived and cognized by experts in the world of Western art ? It is this very question which actually interested us. To answer this, we had to understand the links between art and globalization and discuss the contributions of cultural and postcolonial studies related to this subject. From that initial question, we have gathered and studied hegemonic discourses involved in the field of culture, negotiation processes, differences policies and modes of identification of the artists from the South in an ethnocentric vision. To carry out our research, we conducted two studies. The first concerns a thematic study of the headings of international exhibitions on contemporary art from the south of the Mediterranean (Europe and the United States from 1999 to 2014). We support the idea that the subjects of exhibitions convey a discourse that reflects the cultural ideas of Western hegemony and trends concerning genre, ethnicity, class, confining the status of the southern Mediterranean artist to a "peripheral" role. The second survey which is comprehensive in nature, deals with the beliefs of the southern Mediterranean artists and their positioning in comparison with identity markers in the construction of ethnic categories. How do they perceive these markers, do they give them some recognition ? This study was conducted before and after the revolutionary movements of the Arab Spring.

Ce travail de thèse interroge les enjeux des idéologies et des pratiques linguistiques scolaires en Polynésie française, dans une perspective sociodidactique ayant pour finalité la recherche de leviers pour une meilleure réussite scolaire et éducative. Dans le cadre épistémologique et éthique de la complexité, la recherche met en oeuvre une méthodologie qualitative fondée sur une approche compréhensive à visée actionnelle. Ancré dans le domaine spécifique des sciences du langage, le parcours proposé appréhende ainsi les différents niveaux du système éducatif (macro i.e. politique linguistique éducative ; méso i.e. établissements et dispositifs ; micro i.e. la classe ; nano i.e. l’individu) tout en établissant des liens avec d’autres champs des sciences humaines (anthropologie, histoire, géographie culturelle, notamment). L’analyse des pratiques langagières met en relief l’existence d’un « macrosystème langagier », et permet de dessiner les contours d’un véritable capital collectif, plurilinguistique et pluriculturel. Il apparaît alors que le système éducatif évolue dans une tension dé/re/structurante entre trois modèles, celui d’un schéma diglossique jusque là dominant, celui, émergent, de la fierté d’une identité polynésienne plurilingue, mis en place par la Charte de l’éducation en 2012, et celui,potentiel, d’un macrolangage hybride, dynamique et pluriel. On réfléchit alors aux pistes qui peuvent permettre de valoriser cette ressource pluri langagière au service de l’amélioration de la qualité du système éducatif, dans une perspective socio-écologique visant à articuler espaces langagiers, territoires scolaires et réussite éducative. / This thesis questions the ideological stakes and school linguistical practices in French Polynesia, within a sociodidactical perspective, in the aim of finding ways to improve school and educational success. Within the epistemological and ethical framework of complexity, this investigation implements a qualitative methodology based on a comprehensive approach with an actional aim. Anchored in the specific field of the language sciences, this work apprehends the different levels of the educational system (macro – meso – micro – nano) establishing links with other human sciences fields. The analysis of language practices emphasizes the existence of a “language macrosystem” and allows us to draw the outlines of a true plurilingual and pluricultural collective background. Intrepid white saviors - international development in contemporary travel writingMalinowska, Magdalena 21 November 2017 (has links)
Drawing from tourism studies, travel literature, and cultural studies, this dissertation uses textual analysis to explore the implicit ideological agendas of international development in a selection of popular narratives written to describe efforts of Spanish individuals to combat poverty in “developing” countries: Pura vida (1998) by José María Mendiluce, Una maestra en Katmandú (2002) by Victoria Subirana, Sonrisas de Bombay (2007) by Jaume Sanllorente, and Los colores de un sueño (2013) by Alba de Toro. This study provides a sociological framework for understanding the politics of production, distribution, and reception of such narratives and examines the discourse of individual altruism by juxtaposing the fields of mass tourism, international development and contemporary popular literature.
Although development-themed narratives present themselves as depictions of charity work, they are also stories of touristic exploits. This dissertation explores how the colonial myth of the explorer is refurbished in narratives of altruistic development within the postmodern mood of “global consciousness”, which is triggered by globalization, commodification and a sense of uncertainty—factors that produce a relentless drive to “save the world”. Despite the postmodern gloss, however, these narratives exoticize “non-modern” scenarios in which the narrators (adventure development tourists) represent themselves as intrepid white saviors in the style of explorers, missionaries and survivors of the past. In this sense, these narratives depend on traditional travel literature tropes.
The deliberate status of these popular narratives as commodities is highlighted, exposing their utility as marketing tools for NGOs. To this end, this dissertation connects the idea of “a good story” to a publishing objective. Reception is approached by exploring the role of interpellation: the subliminal ways in which readers become financial supporters within the context of “global consciousness” wherein altruistic impulses are commodified and incorporated into lifestyles. In this sense, literature plays a key role in formulating and naturalizing the discourse of development. This dissertation exposes the double mechanism at work in development-themed narratives: the pursuit of progressive development used to veil complicity with exploitation.

Jean-Claude Eloy est un compositeur passionné de musiques extra-européennes (et en particulier de musique japonaise) qui revendique un multiculturalisme militant et refuse farouchement que sa démarche puisse être associée à un quelconque exotisme. Pourtant, et sans que la sincérité de son positionnement idéologique puisse être remise en cause, certaines ambiguïtés apparaissent au fur et à mesure de l’étude de sa production. Ainsi, si l’exotisme de surface caractéristique du XIXe siècle a disparu au profit d’un intérêt largement documenté pour les cultures musicales non occidentales, on n’en décèle pas moins la permanence de thèmes caractéristiques de cet exotisme. Il s’agira d’analyser ce paradoxe et d’en proposer des explications. Le travail part de l’hypothèse que l’exotisme repose sur un imaginaire anthropologique à partir duquel prennent naissance des expressions différentes selon les lieux et les époques. L’exotisme répondrait ainsi à des réalités humaines dans lesquelles le contexte colonial aurait joué un rôle uniquement facilitateur (et non suscitateur). Cet exotisme ne pourrait donc pas avoir disparu avec la fin des empires. Il s’agira ainsi de lire les ambiguïtés d’Eloy à la lumière d'un « mythe exotique » toujours vivace dans l’imaginaire collectif contemporain. S’appuyant sur le courant des postcolonial studies, cette lecture interrogera les résurgences exotiques présentes dans l’œuvre d’Eloy pour aboutir à la définition d’un exotisme postcolonial différente de celles qui ont pu être développées dans le domaine littéraire. / Jean-Claude Eloy is a French composer. He is passionately fond of extra-European music, especially Japanese music. He calls for muticulturalism and refuses his works to be associated with exoticism. Even so - and without questionning Eloy’s intellectual honesty - it is possible to find out some ambiguities in his works. For instance, even though superficial exoticism, typical of XIXth century, no longer appears in his music, several themes of this exoticism can be found in some of this works. We will analyze this paradox and suggest some explanations. Our thinking is based on the proposition that exoticism comes from anthropoligical imagination and takes a variety of forms depending on the era. According to this proposition, colonialism has made the development of exoticism easier but didn’t create it. As a result, exoticism could not completely disappear with the end of colonial empires and still exists as a human reality. Postcolonial studies, semiotics and hermeneutics will be used as a background approach to explain the existence of exoticism in Eloy’s works.

It examines their morphological and functional transformation throughout history, analyzes the squares of Latakia and assets them according to special criteria for successful squares which have been articulated by occidental urban planners and architects. xi, 205 p. / As an increasing number of differentially situated women implicated within the global economy continue to come into contact with each other, a host of opportunities and challenges are inaugurated for feminist praxes across borders and differences. The cycles of dependencies accentuated by globalization come hand-in-hand with concerns about unequal distribution, unequal access to resources, and the rise of fundamentalist ideologies. All these together remind us of the urgency of collaboration and cooperation across differences. At the same time, the presence of differences and inequalities threaten to undermine the spirit for collaboration at any given moment. We, therefore, need analytical frameworks that are able to do justice to our identities and agency within interactive spaces. We also need better evaluative frameworks for theorizing ethical responsibility and political concerns about justice within a transnational space that take these realities into account.
I argue for the possibility of a new "critical multicultural transnational feminism" and develop a theoretical framework to anchor this vision in my dissertation. The "critical" component emphasizes the vision for a feminism that is, at once, a self-reflective praxis. The juxtaposition of "multicultural" and "transnational" seeks to emphasize the need for recognizing both the limitations and the importance of borders on our lives. To do this, I articulate an alternative logic of "borders" so as to develop an interactive ontology for thinking about transnationalism and transnational identity. I then take up the project of envisioning the ethical-political project of "solidarity" in the light of this ontology. The philosophical framework that I develop is inspired by the philosophical pragmatism of Mary Parker Follett and Josiah Royce, the existential phenomenology of Simone de Beauvoir, and the work of various postcolonial feminists such as bell hooks, Chandra Mohanty, and Ofelia Schutte. This framework is a feminist pragmatic phenomenology for postcolonial feminist ethics and politics, which can serve as a normative paradigm and a framework of analysis. Finally, I use the framework developed in the dissertation to analyze and evaluate aspects of the international industry in surrogacy-related fertility tourism--a paradigmatic instance of incommensurability and inequality among women within the global economy. / Committee in charge: Bonnie Mann, Co-Chair;

In the aftermath of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in South Africa
J.M.Coetzee writes of the "system" of guilt and shame, debt and retribution which
operates throughout society. He and writers like Doris Lessing and Barbara
Kingsolver tell stories which traverse and explore the paths tracked by society's quest
for healing and restitution. (White) women too, Coetzee's protagonist (in Disgrace)
muses, must have a place, a "niche" in this system. What is this "niche" and what role
do the women in these texts play in the reparation of colonial wrong? How is their
position dictated by discourses which acknowledge the agency of the (female) body in
epistemologies of guilt and power?
This mini-dissertation attempts to trace the figure of the white woman in three late
201h-/early 21 51-century postcolonial literary texts, in order to read the phrases of
meaning that have been inscribed on her body. The novels read are J.M.Coetzee's
Disgrace, Barbara Kingsolver's The Poisonwood Bible and Doris Lessing's The

Post-Oppositional Queer Politics and the Non-confrontational Negotiation of Queer Desires in Contemporary ChinaJanuary 2016 (has links)
abstract: The meaning of sexuality is not only specific to particular time periods in history; it is also culturally specific. Informed by transnationalism, queer of color critique, postcolonial feminism, and public sphere theory, my dissertation investigates the complex dynamic between what I call "Chinese queer subjects" and their bio-genetic families in a time of queer globalization. By centering the life experiences of Chinese queer subjects through interviewing and rhetorical analysis, this project intervenes in the teleological discourse of "coming out" that is circulated both in transnational LGBT movements and within academia. Through a materialist analysis of the "coming out" discourse in mainland China, I reveal why and how the discourse of "coming out" is prioritized in Chinese LGBT movements in order to foster a domestic queer market in mainland China. Of most significance to this project are the two non-confrontational strategies that some Chinese queer subjects employ to navigate the tension between family and sexuality: first, the reticent "coming with" strategy that engages the home space with queer desires, transforming the heteronormative family institution from within, toward a more livable queer life; second, the xinghun strategy, a marriage arrangement that many Chinese gay men and lesbian women partake in as a means of being gay or lesbian without exiting the family kinship system. The practices of reticent "coming with" and xinghun challenge the binary between family and sexuality, suggesting that queerness can emerge and thrive without exiting the (heterosexual) family; they give us some concrete examples of what AnaLouise Keating calls "post-oppositional politics" among some Chinese queer subjects. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Communication Studies 2016

Previous issue date: 2015-09-02 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES) / Since 2004 the city of Lins (São Paulo) receives proportionately the largest flow of African students in São Paulo. Early in our research had about 140 students from the Portuguese Speaking Countries (PALOP): Angola, Cape Verde, Sao Tome & Principe, Mozambique and Guinea Bissau. There they live and study at the University Center of Lins (Unilins). However, are overweight young people from Angola, about 120, are the only ones who are enunciated as Angolan community. By stating this discourse, African students tout and negotiate a set of representations, state differences and promote identification processes. Thus, this work aims specifically foregrounding the experiences of these young Angolan students in Brazilian society. That there is an ethnic character positioning played by students is, and this is the hypothesis of this study, enrolled assignment expression of blackness, historical and daily to people of African descent in their collective experience. In other words, students in their stay in
Brazil undergo a process of racialization. And, in response to this denial produced by a process ethnization a positioning. Which in turn articulates intersected way these two sociological divisions (race and ethnicity). Thus, as important as the intersection and articulation of these two divisions, the form, the process, the "how" students perform this agency and negotiation is critical. You know how, in what way these students are building through complex cultural processes of identity and difference figures. From this derives the following specific objectives, though no less important: i) how and why Brazil is presented as a destination for these students? ii.) As the Angolan students perceive themselves in front of the Brazilian social formation? For if on the one hand, the particulars used to identify contribute to better understand their narratives about tensions and difficulties they experience in this new socio-cultural context; on the other, the choice of Brazil as a privileged destination for these young people is closely linked to the relations that Brazil has with Angola and other countries of Palop. / Desde 2004 a cidade de Lins (interior de São Paulo) recebe, proporcionalmente, o maior fluxo de estudantes africanos do interior paulista. No inicio de nossa pesquisa haviam cerca de 140 estudantes provenientes dos Países de Língua Oficial Portuguesa (Palop): Angola, Cabo Verde, São Tomé & Príncipe, Moçambique e Guine Bissau. Lá eles residem e estudam no Centro Universitário de Lins (Unilins). No entanto, são preponderantes os jovens provenientes de Angola, cerca de 120, sendo, os únicos que se enunciam enquanto comunidade angolana. Ao enunciar esse discurso, os estudantes africanos agenciam e negociam um conjunto de representações, afirmam diferenças e promovem processos de identificação. Nesse sentido, esse trabalho procura tematizar de forma específica a experiências desses jovens estudantes angolanos na sociedade brasileira. De que há um posicionamento de caráter étnico protagonizado pelos estudantes que é, e esta é a hipótese dessa pesquisa, expressão da atribuição adscrita da negrura, histórica e cotidianamente aos povos de origem africana em sua experiência coletiva. Dito de outro modo, os estudantes em sua permanência no Brasil passam por um processo de racialização. E, em reação a essa negação produzem por meio de um processo de etnicização, um posicionamento. Que por sua vez articula de forma interseccionada essas duas clivagens sociológicas (raça e etnia). Dessa forma, tão importante quanto a intersecção e articulação dessas duas clivagens, a forma, o processo, o “como” os estudantes realizam esse agenciamento e negociação, é fundamental. É saber como, de que forma esses estudantes estão (re)construindo através de complexos processos culturais figuras de identidade e diferença. Deste deriva os seguintes objetivos específicos, embora não menos importantes: i) como e porque o Brasil se apresenta como destino para estes estudantes? ii.) Como os estudantes angolanos se percebem diante da formação social brasileira? Pois, se por um lado, os
elementos utilizados para a identificação contribuem para entender melhor as suas narrativas sobre as tensões e dificuldades que vivenciam nesse novo contexto sociocultural; por outro, a escolha do Brasil enquanto destino privilegiado por esses
jovens esta intimamente ligada às relações que o Brasil estabelece com Angola e os demais países dos Palop.
