In today&rsquo / s cities, surveillance become a more common and internalized tool for control that spreads to everyday life with the assistance of new technologies. Numerous surveillance techniques for security reasons such as electronic surveillance on computers or phones, cameras in public and private spaces, fingerprint and eye scans at doors, investigations, credit cards, travel cards become an ordinary part of a modern individual.
The study&rsquo / s point of departure is the question of whether people willingly accept being surveilled for their security or not, in Turkey context. The main argument however is the relation between surveillance-security phenomena and women. It is aimed to question how space, security and surveillance are gendered, whether surveillance increases women&rsquo / s security or not and whether women perceive surveillance as a beneficial tool for their everyday life security. The awareness of women on surveillance techniques, the scale of surveillance, the purpose of it and the relation of it with power mechanisms are also other debated issues. The argument is developed on security and surveillance perceptions of single living and employed women in Istanbul. The consequences of surveillance on public space, the cities in neo-liberal era and the policies that magnify fear and threat and as a result, the inescapable potential of surveillance and spatial segregation are also other subjects matter.

The study intends to investigate the manifestation of power and patriarchy among Armenian marriage and household traditions and customs which have their role in the process of marginalising women. The construal how the marriage traditions and customs define gender roles and trigger gender inequality in Armenian context is discussed. Culture and society and traditions have an enormous impact on defining gender roles in Armenia. Armenians throughout history have been strongly influenced by cultural messages concerning gender roles and family influence. People both at subconscious or conscious level, take in the cultural perceptions. While the country is going through globalisation processes and becoming more and more exposed to foreign influences, conventional gender stereotypes, and patriarchal systems are still deeply rooted and prevalent in all spheres of social life, and the institution of marriage is one of the most striking among them. The dissertation completes research that began in late 2007. It presents research findings concerning ways and methods of (re) construction of gender identities of Czech children placed in facilities for institutional and protective education. Based on ethnographic research in Diagnostic institute Ark there are examined practices and techniques shaping gender roles and contents, which are rooted in the so-called helping professions discourses. Psychology, special education, social work, pedagogy, education and health education are specializations that converge are under the roof of the institutes and create a discursive field for the exercise of power-colored procedures disciplining the children who are placed (cf. Laan, 1998). These procedures are directly linked to the concepts of socially desirable sex-gender order. The research objective was to capture the processes which have been neglected by the Czech professional community so far and which may become potential disciplination instruments in the hands of professionals in a wide range of helping professions, including social and special pedagogy.

This diploma thesis deals with home births and how they were referred to in the media regarding the medial cause with a midwife Ivana Königsmarková. The goal of this work is to describe approaches that can be traced on this cause, what is the gender dimension of these approaches like and how does the aspect of power manifest itself on them. To achieve that I've chosen a method of discourse analysis which is the best one to point out the relation between language, power and ideology. Analysed material is represented by the articles from Czech media that are associated with the given cause and on basis of which the most frequently occurring topics can be traced along with their tendencies throughout time. Last but not least I'm closely analysing two chosen articles which represent two dominant ways of thinking - the medical approach of labour and natural or alternative approach.

1 ABSTRACT The aim of this thesis is to introduce the issue of sexual harassment from the perspective of students of Czech universities. I present a brief history of the phenomenon of sexual harassment and its definitions in the theoretical section. I deal with power aspects of harassing behavior and I present its impacts on harassed persons. I also put sexual harassment into research and legislative context and I devote to the specifics of the school and the Czech setting. The empirical part is dedicated to my research. On the basis of qualitative research I find out how students define sexual harassment, what personal and mediated experience they have with it, what strategies they choose, if they are to cope with this behavior, and how they evaluate it. I focus on the question, with whom they solve sexual harassment, and I present their suggestions of solving and prevention of sexual harassment. I also discuss how they evaluate relationships with teachers.

This thesis Gender in compulsory reading - Old Greek Myths and Legends: Gender analysis of the writing deals with literary representation of gender issues in mentioned writing, written by Eduard Petiška. The very analysis is based on analysing of gender topics and issues we are interested in and focused on. These topics are compared and showed using examples from particular myths and legend. The question whether these topics are influenced by patriarchal order in the society is the crucial for this thesis. Despite the variability of Petiška's writing, which is necessarily caused by variations of ancient and continuously construated stories; some patterns and systems are there to be found and explored by contemporary gender theories, mostly by feministic literature criticism. In this thesis the method of resisting reading according to Judith Fetterley is used. The deconstruction of the text and its hidden values which are based on male domination and the reconstruction of it in order to show the new perspective at the same moment are the main goals of resisting reading. The characters from the legends are used in context of archetypal criticism method. Considering the literature-critical perspective, the method of close reading is chosen.
