社論的論證結構分析 / The Analysis of Argument Structures in Editorials朱灼文, Chu, Chuo-wen Unknown Date (has links)
By the means of formal semantics, this thesis used two opposite editorials as cases to design a discourse analysis procedure which translates expository-argumentative texts into formulae of first-order predicate logic. The procedure reduces disputes in natual language about truth or rightness claims into judgements on truth values and validities of argument forms, thus the communicative actions disabled by quarrels can be practically redempted. The designing drafted feasible treatments for propositional structures of discourses, compound sentential constituents, anaphoras, quantifier scope ambiguities, cause-and-effect statements, inferences for absent premises, and quotation structures.

The acquisition of coarse gaze estimates in visual surveillanceBenfold, Ben January 2011 (has links)
This thesis describes the development of methods for automatically obtaining coarse gaze direction estimates for pedestrians in surveillance video. Gaze direction estimates are beneficial in the context of surveillance as an indicator of an individual's intentions and their interest in their surroundings and other people. The overall task is broken down into two problems. The first is that of tracking large numbers of pedestrians in low resolution video, which is required to identify the head regions within video frames. The second problem is to process the extracted head regions and estimate the direction in which the person is facing as a coarse estimate of their gaze direction. The first approach for head tracking combines image measurements from HOG head detections and KLT corner tracking using a Kalman filter, and can track the heads of many pedestrians simultaneously to output head regions with pixel-level accuracy. The second approach uses Markov-Chain Monte-Carlo Data Association (MCMCDA) within a temporal sliding window to provide similarly accurate head regions, but with improved speed and robustness. The improved system accurately tracks the heads of twenty pedestrians in 1920x1080 video in real-time and can track through total occlusions for short time periods. The approaches for gaze direction estimation all make use of randomised decision tree classifiers. The first develops classifiers for low resolution head images that are invariant to hair and skin colours using branch decisions based on abstract labels rather than direct image measurements. The second approach addresses higher resolution images using HOG descriptors and novel Colour Triplet Comparison (CTC) based branches. The final approach infers custom appearance models for individual scenes using weakly supervised learning over large datasets of approximately 500,000 images. A Conditional Random Field (CRF) models interactions between appearance information and walking directions to estimate gaze directions for head image sequences.

Vymezení událostních předmětů po "have" a "take" a jejich překladové korespondence / Eventive objects after "have" and "take" - identification and translation correspondencesKřístková, Jana January 2012 (has links)
The present MA thesis is concerned with an English verbonominal construction, which consists of a semantically light verb, in the case of the present thesis have and take, with an eventive object. The construction represents one semantic unit, which is proved by a paraphrase in which the object replaces the whole construction as the verb of the clause without any change of meaning. The construction affects the aspectual features of the verb, which is reflected in Czech translation equivalents. It also allows for easier modification and quantification. The kind of determiner and modifier present has an impact on the Czech counterparts, most importantly on the aspect of the verb. Modifiers usually translate as adverbials or adjectives modifying a syntactic object, if the Czech counterpart is verbonominal. The integration of the English modifiers into the Czech sentence is often problematic. The thesis presents a theoretical survey of information on the topic and provides a linguistic description of 279 examples of the construction obtained through the online corpora InterCorp. The examples are analyzed with respect to determiners, quantifiers and modifiers. This, along with the Czech counterparts, is the basis for conclusions on the influence of the construction on the translation to Czech.

This thesis aims at filling the gap of studies of support verb constructions in African languages, as well as that of comparative studies among languages of different families in order to validate the notion of the universality of support verbs. Indeed our research has demonstrated that support verbs do exist in Ewe, a Kwa language of the Niger-Congo family for which there had been no prior study of this notion. Moreover, a comparative study also revealed to us that support verb constructions in English, French and Ewe share certain syntax-semantic properties such as the reduction of the support verbe and its reconstruction through a relative clause. The three languages also shared the property of support verbs being agents of nominalization. However, there are also differences in these constructions. One of the differences is the fact that determination plays an important role in support verb constructions in English and French. However, determination is not an important factor in support verb constructions in Ewe. Other differences that were reflected in our thesis include the differences in number and frequency of support verb constructions (SVCs) in the tree languages, as well as differences in the interdependency links among the various elements of SVCs in the three languages. On the whole, English and French seem linguistically close and there were few syntax-semantic differences. On the other hand, Ewe displayed more differences – which supports the concept of different language-specific local grammars suggested by the Lexical-Grammar framework.

Développement et réalisation d'un simulateur de machines à états abstraits temps-réel et model-checking de formules d'une logique des prédicats temporisée du premier ordre / Development and implementation of a simulator for abstract state machines with real time and model-checking of properties in a language of first order predicate logic with timeVassiliev, Pavel 27 November 2008 (has links)
In this thesis a temporal model for abstract state machines (ASM) method is pro- posed. An extension of ASM specification language on the base of the proposed temporal model with continuous time is developed. The language extension helps to reduce the size of the specification hence to diminish the probability of an error. The semantics of the extended ASM language is developed which takes into account the definitions of external functions, the values of time delays and the method of non-determinism resolving. A subsystem for verification of user properties in the FOTL language is developed. A simulator prototype for ASMs with time is developed and implemented. It includes the parser of the timed ASM language, the interpreter, the verification subsystem and the graphical user interface

Embedded systems are increasingly integrated into existing real-time applications. They are usually composed of deeply integrated but heterogeneous hardware and software components. These components are developed under strict constraints. Accordingly, the work of design engineers became more tricky and challenging. To meet the high quality standards in nowadays embedded systems and to satisfy the rising industrial demands, the automatization of the developing process of those systems is gaining more and more importance. A major challenge is to develop an automated approach that can be used for the integrated verification and validation of complex and heterogeneous HW/SW systems. In this thesis, we propose a new compositional approach to model and verify hardware and software written in SystemC language. This approach is based on the SystemC Waiting State Automata (WSA). The SystemC Waiting State Automata are used to model the abstract behavior of hardware or software systems described in SystemC. They preserve the semantics of the SystemC scheduler at the temporal and the delta-cycle level. This model allows to reduce the complexity of the modeling process of complex systems due to the problem of state explosion during modeling while remaining faithful to the original system. The SystemC waiting state automaton is also compositional and supports refinement. In addition, this model is extended with parameters such as time and counters in order to take into account further aspects like temporality and other extra-functional properties such as QoS.In this thesis, we propose a stepwise approach on how to automatically extract the SystemC WSAs from SystemC descriptions. This construction is based on symbolic execution together with predicate abstraction. We propose a set of algorithms to symbolically compose and reduce the SystemC WSAs in order to study, analyze and verify concurrent behavior of systems as well as the data exchange between various components. We then propose to use the SystemC WSA to model and simulate hardware and software systems, and to compute the worst cas execution time (WCET) using the Timed SystemC WSA. Finally, we define how to apply model checking techniques to prove the correctness of the abstract analysis.

Acquisition of Italian as a second language: the situation of adoption from Lithuania / Italų kaip antrosios kalbos įsisavinimas: įvaikinimo iš Lietuvos situacijaRamonaitė, Jogilė Teresa 25 June 2013 (has links)
The aim of this dissertation is to analyze the linguistic development of Lithuanian children adopted to Italy focusing on the expression of action (and state) as one of the most important communicative tasks; to define the stages of acquisition of Italian as a second language, the speed with which the stages occur and the factors that influence it; to investigate the position of Lithuanian in the linguistic repertoire of the adopted children. In order to achieve these goals a sociolinguistic survey of adoptive parents has been conducted, adopted children have been observed for a year after the adoption, spontaneous speech data were collected of one selected child, the data then has been transcribed and annotated for analysis with the program CHILDES, a detailed analysis of the expression of action / state has been conducted.
Summarizing the results of the research, the dissertation confirms that the adopted children rapidly acquire the new language (L2), they reach a very high level of linguistic quality, comparable to that of the native speakers, even though their acquisition is completely (or mostly) natural and not formal. The expression of action / state starts by using pragmatic principles and gradually passing to the grammatical ones whereas the grammar is acquired in a typical evolving sequence. Even the second language acquisition of the older adopted children has some similarities with the children’s mother tongue acquisition (L1). Age is not the major factor that...

Issues on Xitsonga verbsMabaso, Ximbani Eric 06 1900 (has links)
This study focuses on the predicate argument structure (PAS) of a sub-class of
verbs in Xitsonga - verbs of change of possession: give, contribute, future having,
providing, obtaining and verbs of exchange. It is shown that these verbs select
various theta roles to form their PAS in the different alternations allowed in this
language. The effects of the applicative {-el-} and causative {-is-} verbal affixes on
the PAS of such verbs are also considered. The study confirms the fact that the
ordering of objects in ditransitive verbs is determined by an interplay of syntactic and
semantic factors. Ambiguity arises in the case of two animate objects. In this case
the object with a definite reading will appear adjacent to the verb. / African Languages / M. A. (Arican Languages)

This thesis investigates patterns of referentiality in sentential complementation in Portuguese, Italian and Modern Greek, especially the phenomenon known as obviation or disjoint reference. This is a constraint attested in languages, and it is characterized by the fact that the subject of the subordinate clause must be disjoint in reference to the subject of the matrix sentence. Traditionally, obviation has been assumed to be a property of subjunctive complementation, or a phenomenon arising along with the control from the competition between finite/non-finite forms. However, the data are not consistent with these hypotheses, since obviation appears in indicative complementation and inflected infinitive contexts. Moreover, obviation is not displayed in every volitional context. Based on the theory of semantic selection and a minimalist version of subcategorization (cf. Adger, 2004), this thesis proposes that obviation, in sentential complementation, is a semantic constraint required by three types of predicates, the causative, volitional and physical perceptive predicates, which will be taken as predicates able to impose semantic constraints on their complements. These predicates are called obviation predicates, which share some common properties, as denoting eventive/non-epistemic reading, they require referentially independent subject pronouns in an embedded clause, and select a TP complement. We argue that these predicates, because of their modal character, select semantically a trace [obviative], which is transmitted to the subject in the embedded clause. Obviation predicates are distinguished from another group of modal predicates, control predicates, which do not allow, in an embedded clause, an argument referentially independent from the matrix subject. These two groups are distinguished from yet another group of verbs that allow free reference, specially constituted by epistemic, declarative predicates, among others, which denote an epistemic/propositional reading and select CP complements. Syntactically, this group can be distinguished from obviation predicates by selecting distinct structures, because while these have a TP complement, the former select CP complements. To explain why both obviation and control are displayed by volitional predicates, we propose that there are two types of volitional meanings in the languages: the default volitional that selects control, and the causative volitional, that requires obviation. Furthermore, we argue that the inflected infinitive complement selected by causative and perceptive verbs is a TP structure, and they require obviation, which differ from the inflected infinitive selected by factives/epistemic/declarative verb, which take CP complements and allows free reference. The purpose of this thesis is to show that obviation, in sentential complementation, is not a phenomenon restricted to the Romance languages, or languages that exhibit a distinction between finite and non-finite forms, but that it is a semantic constraint imposed by obviation predicates on their complements and, consequently, this constraint will appear in languages which have these contexts in sentential complementation / Doutorado / Linguistica / Doutora em Linguística
