Preserving Urban Landscapes as Public History --- A Qualitative Study of Kensington Market, Toronto

Li, Na 01 February 2011 (has links)
Situated within the interpretive and critical traditions, this study aims to contribute to one of the continuing primary themes in urban preservation: how to interpret and preserve the intangible values of built environments. A comprehensive analysis of dominant theories of urban preservation forms the conceptual framework within which this dissertation takes place. It starts by locating the intellectual context of preservation in North America, and examines its basic premises and core issues. It identifies three limits to the traditional approach to preservation planning. The complexity and fragility of history, its narrative quality and its particularities, its emotional content and economic values, all connect urban preservation with public history. Therefore, in the spirit of communicative democracy and "a shared authority", the study incorporates collective memory as an essential construct in urban landscapes, and suggests a culturally sensitive narrative approach (CSNA). The study employs an in-depth case study. The setting is Kensington Market in Toronto, Canada. It examines retrospectively the urban renewal planning of Kensington Market in the 1960s, identifies the pivotal events that prompted the change of urban renewal policies, and demonstrates, through the interpretive policy analysis, that sometimes urban renewal plans that fail to be implemented can become success stories in how to preserve urban neighborhoods as a kind of public history. To probe deeper into the sources of conflict between the professionals and the public, the study further explores the mutual relationship between collective memory and urban landscapes. It takes a selective look at some significant sites of memory, and connects them into a narrative path. Through oral history interviewing, field observation, and material cultural analysis, this part of the analysis constitutes an empirical study of CSNA. A proposition is derived from this critical case study. The study concludes with seven steps of CSNA, a guide for urban landscape preservation and planning.

An Examination of the Adoption of Preservation Metadata in Cultural Heritage Institutions: An Exploratory Study Using Diffusion of Innovations Theory

Alemneh, Daniel Gelaw 05 1900 (has links)
Digital preservation is a significant challenge for cultural heritage institutions and other repositories of digital information resources. Recognizing the critical role of metadata in any successful digital preservation strategy, the Preservation Metadata Implementation Strategies (PREMIS) has been extremely influential on providing a "core" set of preservation metadata elements that support the digital preservation process. However, there is no evidence, in the form of previous research, as to what factors explain and predict the level of adoption of PREMIS. This research focused on identifying factors that affect the adoption of PREMIS in cultural heritage institutions. This study employed a web-based survey to collect data from 123 participants in 20 country as well as a semi-structured, follow-up telephone interview with a smaller sample of the survey respondents. Roger's diffusion of innovation theory was used as a theoretical framework. The main constructs considered for the study were relative advantage, compatibility, complexity, trialability, observability, and institution readiness. The study yielded both qualitative and quantitative data, and analysis showed that all six factors influence the adoption of PREMIS in varying degrees. Results of a regression analysis of adoption level on the six factors showed a statistically significant relationship. The R2 value for the model was .528, which means that 52.8% of the variance in PREMIS adoption was explained by a combination of the six factors. Considering the complexity of issue, this study has important implications for future research on preservation metadata and provides recommendations for researchers and stakeholders engaged in metadata standards development efforts.

Framework for digital preservation of electronic government in Ghana

Adu, Kofi Koranteng January 2015 (has links)
The global perspective on digital revolution is one that has received a rapturous approval from information professionals, scholars and practitioners. However, such an approval has come at a great cost to memory institutions as the preservation of digital information has proved to be a complex phenomenon to memory institutions. Guided by the multi method design and underpinned by the triangulation of questionnaires, interviews, observation and document analysis, the study examined digital preservation of e-government in Ghana. Findings revealed that the creation of databases, digital publication, emails, website information and tweets were often ocassioned by the use of ICT, e-government, and application of legislations and public policies. It observed that these types of digital records were in urgent need for preservation as most of the ministries and agencies were unable to access their digital records. While the application of a digital preservation tool (Lots of Copies Keeps Stuff Safe) was a familiar terrain to the ministries and agencies, there was expressed lack of awareness about digital preservation support organisations and digital preservation standards. The study identified funding, level of security and privacy, skills training and technological obsolescence as factors that pose key threats to digital preservation. It noted backup strategy, migration, metadata and trusted repositories as the most widely implemented preservation strategy across the ministries and agencies. On the other hand, cloud computing, refreshing and emulation were the least implemented preservation strategies used to address the digital preservation challenges . The study recommends that the ministries and agencies can address many of the digital preservation challenges if they leverage on collaborative and participatory opportunities. Such collaborative and participatory opportunities involve the use of experts from other institutions to share resources and use a common protocol through cloud computing and Open Data. It further recommends that the process of developing a digital preservation policy can be guided by a template document from other jurisdictions / Information Science / D. Litt et Phil.

Unknown Date (has links)

Campo magnético pulsado na preservação de carne bovina moída / Pulsed magnetic field in ground beef preservation

Lins, Patricia Goldschmidt 26 July 2011 (has links)
This study aimed to evaluate the use of low intensity pulsed magnetic field (PMF) in the preservation of microbiological quality, color and oxidative stability of ground beef during aerobic refrigerated storage. Ground beef samples of chuck tender (Supraspinatus muscle) were exposed to PMF for 2 hours at frequencies of 1, 30 and 60 Hz or, in another step, they were exposed to a 1 Hz PMF for 2 hours or continuously for 12 days. Control samples were not exposed to PMF. Samples were stored at 4ºC for up to 12 days, and evaluated every six days through microbiological analysis of total aerobic mesophilic bacteria count, and every two days through physicochemical and biochemical analysis of pH, instrumental color (CIELAB scale), myoglobin and lipid oxidation. Exposure to 1 Hz PMF for 2 hours reduced the growth of aerobic mesophiles in relation to the control by 1.3 logarithmic cycles in the 12th day of refrigerated storage. Metmyoglobin content of samples exposed to the PMF for 2 hours, regardless of the pulse frequency, were significantly lower compared to the control in the 6th day of refrigerated storage. The other quality parameters did not change significantly during storage compared to the control and it was not observed effect of different PMF frequencies. We concluded that low intensity pulsed magnetic field (order of mili Tesla) has the potential to be used as innovative technology, in combination with refrigeration, in fresh meat preservation. However, more studies are needed to better understand the mechanisms of action of magnetic field, mainly in foods.

Vergleich verschiedener Konservierungslösungen in der Langzeitperfusion der Leber anhand klinisch-chemischer Parameter

Meißner, Wassilios Georgios 05 November 1999 (has links)
COMPARISON OF DIFFERENT PRESERVATION SOLUTIONS FOR LONG-TERM CONTINUOUS PERFUSION OF THE LIVER The introduction of the University of Wisconsin (UW) solution for liver preservation in 1988 allowed for the first time the extension of the safe cold storage time up to 24 hours. Nevertheless, severe organ dysfunction of the liver may still occur postoperatively, depending on the quality and the duration of organ preservation. Therefore, improved organ preservation should make possible a higher rate of immediate organ function after transplantation and the extension of the safe cold storage time avoiding any wastage of organs due to liver dysfunction. Our study aimed to investigate whether continuous perfusion of pig livers in comparison to simple cold storage with the UW solution results in improved preservation. Furthermore, we examined if our extracorporal perfusion system, modified by P. Neuhaus, would be suitable to test new preservation solutions before clinical use allowing the establishment of a new in-vitro model. Thus, livers were perfused continuously using the Free University (FU) solution and the Histidine Tryptophan Ketoglutarate (HTK) solution respectively and preservation was compared to the UW solution. The preservation injury was measured in-vitro during a subsequent warm perfusion of the organ with pig blood. Differences between continuous perfusion and simple cold storage were significant. Lower concentrations of the transaminases in the UW group were associated with a higher bile secretion, a lower arterial pressure and a lower increase of the liver weight. Results obtained for the FU group suggest a comparable quality of preservation compared to livers continuously perfused with UW solution, whereas the extent of the preservation injury was significantly higher in the HTK group. In conclusion, in our experimental design continuous perfusion with UW solution seems to be a better method for organ preservation suggesting that the clinical use of this technique may be beneficial. Large experience with continuous perfusion for human renal procurement has proven its technical feasibility.
