Reasons to be Desired

Goldstein, Emily R 01 January 2015 (has links)
Through a comparison of Tennessee Williams’ Blanche in A Streetcar Named Desire and Neil LaBute’s Steph in reasons to be pretty, this thesis explores the ways in which the female position has both changed and remained relatively the same over the course of the last sixty years.

A poetagem bonita: edição e estudo de livro inédito de Mário de Andrade / A strain of pretty poetry: critical edition and study of an unpublished book by Mário de Andrade

Sá, Marina Damasceno de 19 September 2018 (has links)
This thesis aims to research, organize, and prepare the critical edition of articles of literary criticism by Mário de Andrade that focus predominantly on Brazilian Modernist poetry, published in the 1920s and 1930s. These articles are relevant to studies of Brazilian Modernism because they bring to light Mário de Andrade\'s critical reflection on the movement, in the heat of the \"first moment of Modernism.\" This dissertation has a twofold aim: it establishes a reliable and annotated edition of a proposed collection of essays of criticism by Mário de Andrade, whose history and general outline are preserved in the writers archives, and proceeds to undertake a critical study of the material. By bringing greater visibility to documents that are now to be found in Mário de Andrade\'s library and papers, which have been deposited in the Instituto de Estudos Brasileiros da Universidade de São Paulo, this dissertation contributes to expanding our understanding of the historical reception of Brazilian Modernism.

Placing plenty of poles is pretty preposterous

He, C., Laub, A. J., Mehrmann, V. 30 October 1998 (has links) (PDF)
We discuss the pole placement problem for single-input or multi-input control models of the form _x=Ax+Bu. This is the problem of determining a linear state feedback of the formu=F xsuch that in the closed-loop system _x= (A+BF)x, the matrixA+BFhas a prescribed set of eigenvalues. We analyze the conditioning of this problem and show that it is an intrinsically ill-conditioned problem, and especially so when the system dimension is large. Thus even the best numerical methods for this problem may yield very bad results. On the other hand, we also discuss the question of whether one really needs to solve the pole placement problem. In most circum- stances what is really required is stabilization or that the poles are in a specified region of the complex plane. This related problem may have much better conditioning. We demonstrate this via the example of stabilization.

Do You Fit the Alloy Mold? The Homogenization of Structure and Audience in the Television Adaptations of 'Gossip Girl,' 'Pretty Little Liars,' and 'The Vampire Diaries'

Murray, Caitlin 25 April 2013 (has links)
This thesis explores the ways in which the television adaptations of Gossip Girl, Pretty Little Liars, and The Vampire Diaries become more homogenized during the adaptation process, thus contributing to an implied exclusivity from which Alloy, Inc.—the media and marketing company that owns these products—might benefit. This paper points out the ways in which the three products become structurally similar to one another during the adaptation process through the implementation of soap opera conventions. An exploration of consumption and class in each of the three works reveals an emphasis on class-based exclusivity in the adaptation process. Finally, a focus on portrayals of race within the source texts and their respective adaptations reveals the ways in which African American characters are presented as invisible, outsiders, or antagonists, thus creating products that become more exclusive on a race basis.

Hlas ženy ve třech verzích Pygmalionu: sociolingvistická analýza / Voice of a Woman in Three Versions of Pygmalion: Sociolinguistic Analysis

Trojanová, Šárka January 2016 (has links)
This diploma thesis focuses on the sociolinguistic analysis of the language of female characters in a play, musical and film. The theoretical part summarizes sociolinguistic literature and it also scrutinizes the current findings of the influence of gender, social class and identity on language. These concepts are discussed both from linguistic and sociological point of view. The practical part is aimed at the analysis of woman's language in George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion and its two adaptations, the musical My Fair Lady and the film Pretty Woman. It deals with the change of the main characters that become representatives of upper social class. The change is discussed diachronically in terms of language, especially pronunciation, lexis, grammar and style, but also in terms of identity and social class.

Model-driven Pretty Printer for Xtext Framework / Model-driven Pretty Printer for Xtext Framework

Novotný, Marek January 2013 (has links)
The domain-specific language allows for describing problems of a concrete domain, for which the language is created. This fact implies that a number of languages of this kind grows with a number of problem domains. The use of domain-specific languages brings a necessity to pretty-print these languages, where the concept of pretty-printing consists of code formatting and syntax highlighting. One of tools that allow for creating domain-specific languages is the Xtext framework, which offers only a limited range of tools that are able to define a configuration for pretty-printing. Moreover, these tools are hardly understandable because they are confusing and requires knowledge of Xtext's internals. Thus this thesis introduces a new way of pretty-printing domain-specific languages. The way is based on declarative definition of formatting rules. Furthermore, this thesis helps a user to create formatting rules by utilizing nontrivial heuristics.

Transforming Rags to Riches? : Material Culture in Cendrillon and Pretty Woman

Cheng, Ya Wen Unknown Date (has links)
To de-mythicize a fairy tale means to discover its cultural, historical and political aspects and therefore, in my thesis, it helps to distinguish Perrault’s Cendrillon (1697) from other Cinderella variants. My thesis approaches Perrault’s Cendrillon in a materialist method: with the employment of the late seventeenth-century French material culture, Cendrillon is transformed into a modernized literary fairy tale about her restoration to her original social status. This French Cinderella is quite distinct from the traditional rags-to-riches Cinderella story since Perrault champions a modernism with which he intends to change the future of the French literature. The film Pretty Woman (1990) is to serve as a contrast and to elucidate the idea that different eras make different Cinderella stories. The Cinderella in the Anglophone world is getting more and more debased and the Americanized Cinderella is the most debased ever, the street walker. Her rags-to-riches transformation manifests the social expectations toward in the eighties toward what a woman should be and possess. On the other hand, there is another side of the story in the film. On Edward’s part, I am going to approach the material culture via American masculinities in order to illustrate what a man should be and have. Besides, Edward also plays the roles of the male Cinderella and the fairy godfather in the film. The two roles Edward plays will be further developed in my thesis. The materialist approach has its own limits: it cannot include the conformist and the individualist aspects and I thus fail to incorporate it in my thesis.
