Electronic band engineering of Transition metal dichalcogenides: First Principles CalculationMaharjan, Nikesh 01 May 2015 (has links)
Based on first principles Density Functional Theory calculations, we have investigated for possible paths for engineering electronic band structure of Transition Metal Dichalco- genides (TMDs). We have considered two approaches which have shown to be promising for engineering electronic bands of TMDs: substitutional chemical doping and heterostruc- turing. All the calculations are done using first principles Density Functional Theory as it is implemented in Quantum Espresso package. Two possible substitutional doping meth- ods for MoS2 are considered in our calculations; cation doping where Mo is substituted by metal atoms and anion doping where Nitrogen and halogen group atoms take the posi- tion of S-sites. We observe the n-type characteristics for halogen group doping and p-type characteristics for Nitrogen group doping at S site. Similarly, we observe these bipolar characteristics when substituted by the transition metal elements (4d elements in the peri- odic table) at Mo site. Our results on doping monolayer MoS2 are in agreement with those results obtained by Dolui et al. for similar systems. Our work is extended to explore the effect of substitutional doping in bilayer MoS2. We observe the promising bipolar char- acteristics on doping while the magnitude of the band gap decreases upon the controlled S-site doping with F and As. In the second part, we considered two types of heterostructuring; Van der Waals heterostructures, and lateral heterostructures. In Van der Waals heterostructures, a direct band gap is observed with a physical separation of charges into two layers from orbital isosurface plots. We present a brief overview of the folding of energy bands in supercell approach. Using heterogeneous supercell approach, we studied the electronic properties of a mixed system of MoS2 -WS2 . The separation of the charges into the two sections shows that our MoS2 -WS2 in-plane heterostructure shows a potential for a pn junction. These systematic studies of the doped and heterostructures of TMDs can be useful for device applications.

Teachers' development of critically reflective practice through the creation of classroom materialsBouckaert-den Draak, Marina January 2017 (has links)
The research presented in this dissertation explores the interaction between English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers and the classroom materials they develop. It aims to illuminate the potential value of this creative process for teachers’ development of critically reflective practice (CRP). For many EFL teachers, materials are an essential part of their pedagogy. Despite the widespread availability of publications for this compulsory subject in Dutch secondary education, many teachers choose to supplement the coursebook with their own materials. A premise of this research is that the materials teachers develop embody their personal theories of action regarding EFL teaching and learning. These theories, consisting of espoused principles and principles-in-use, are conceptualised as the teachers’ pedagogic principles. Critical reflection may help teachers uncover their espoused and tacit principles with the aim to align them, and improve their teaching practice. The central question is: In what ways does classroom materials development offer teachers of English a tool for CRP? The research questions are addressed through a qualitative, exploratory, embedded multiple-case study approach. Four Dutch EFL teachers are considered as individual cases. The components of each case are analysed to present an encompassing view of the materials development process: reflective logs (creation), the materials themselves (product), and lesson observations (use) are supplemented with pre- and post-lesson interviews to complete data collection. Data are analysed through deductive and inductive within-case analysis and cross-case synthesis. Findings suggest that teachers’ pedagogic principles are multifarious, informed by practical and pragmatic considerations, and revealed at several points and in a variety of ways during the materials development process. Yet it is only when teachers engage in dialogue about them that increased awareness of these principles ensues. CRP may thus be stimulated by a critical friend, and the materials development process can provide an impetus for discussion and dialogue.

New approaches to variational principles and gauge theories in general relativityChurchill, Lorne Winston 15 June 2018 (has links)
We develop new variational techniques, acting on classes of Lagrangians with the same functional dependence but arbitrary functional form, for the derivation of general, strongly conserved quantities, supplementing the usual procedure for deriving weak conservation laws via Noether's theorem. Using these new techniques we generate and generalize virtually all energy-momentum complexes currently known. In the process we discover and understand the reason for the difficulties associated with energy-momentum complexes in general relativity.
We study a Palatini variation of a novel Lagrangian due to Nissani. We find that Nissani's principal claim, that his Lagrangian specifies Riemannian geometry in the presence of a generalized matter tensor, is not in fact justifiable, and prove that his Lagrangian is not unique.
We speculate on the possibility of deriving a general-relativistic analog of Maxwell's current equation, a matter current equation, yielding an entirely new approach to the idea of energy-momentum in general relativity. We develop the SL(2,C) x U(1) spinor formalism naturally combining the gravitational and electromagnetic potentials in a single object--the spinor connection. Variably charged matter is rigourously introduced, through the use of spin densities, in the unified potential theories we develop.
We generate both the Einstein-Maxwell equations and new equations. The latter generalize both the Maxwell equation and the Einstein equation which includes a new "gravitational stress-energy tensor". This new tensor exactly mimicks the electromagnetic stress-energy tensor with Riemann tensor contractions replacing Maxwell tensor contractions. We briefly consider the introduction of matter. A Lagrangian generalizing the two spinor Dirac equations has no gravitational currents and the electromagnetic currents must be on the light cone. A Lagrangian generalizing the Pauli equations has both gravitational and electromagnetic currents. The equations of both Lagrangians demonstrate beautifully how the divergence of the total stress-energy tensor vanishes in this formalism. In the theory of the generalized Einstein-Maxwell and Pauli equations we succeed in deriving an equation describing a generalized matter-charge current density. / Graduate

La réception de règles de droit exogènes : l’exemple de la mise en jeu de la responsabilité sans faute de l’Etat du fait de ses actes normatifs en France et aux Pays-Bas / The reception of exogenous rules of law : the example of the implementation of the no-fault liability of the State as a result of its normative acts in France and the NetherlandsArmbruster, Néda 05 December 2012 (has links)
/... / The aim is to analyze the junction of general principles of law at European level. this study is limited to the general principles of the right to these two legal cultures, to the principles accepted by the jurisprudence and imposing itself on the administration and its relations with individuals. it will thus be necessary to answer several questions, including: do general principles of law really tend to converge? Is it necessary to detect a uniformity of law under the influence of the general principles of European rights or does it make it possible to emphasize that certain principles are "universal"? if not, why do certain principles remain specific to certain legal systems? should we not see in European rights the possibility of enriched by the general principles of rights of extranational origin? but also to share the general principles of French law? / ...

Applying lean agriculture in organic apple production: Case study in peruGonzales-Gutierrez, Francisco, Huaman-Sanchez, Vanessa, Sotelo-Raffo, Fernando, Ramos, Edgar 01 January 2021 (has links)
El texto completo de este trabajo no está disponible en el Repositorio Académico UPC por restricciones de la casa editorial donde ha sido publicado. / In this document it was proposed to apply Lean Agriculture, using the five Lean principles focused on the production of organic apples, which would allow to achieve a differentiated product, through the reduction of waste, improvements in the quality of activities and the commitment of the farmers. For this, a review of the literature that corroborated the impact of the methodology was carried out. In addition, surveys were conducted, taking a sample of farmers, which evidenced the gap. Finally it was obtained as a conclusion that after the implementation of the Lean Agriculture methodology in the processes, an increase in production suitable for sale in traditional and organic markets is achieved. In addition, the increase in quality achieved a percent of production suitable for exporting.
