Nitrate and phosphorus loads

<p>Daily nitrate-N, soluble reactive phosphorus and total phosphorus loads in subsurface drainage were quantified in an agricultural farm field in eastern Indiana (Davis Purdue Agricultural Center).</p> <p><b>Site description:</b> The data was collected from the field W at Davis Purdue Agricultural Center (DPAC) located in eastern Indiana. Field W is relatively flat (slope < 1%), with 0.16 km2 total area, divided into four plots, northwest (NW), southwest (SW), northeast (NE), and southeast (SE) with areas ranging from 3.5 ha to 3.7 ha. The four soil series at the site range from very poorly to somewhat poorly drained, with a small portion of moderately well drained series. The subsurface drainage system was installed in 2004, with 10-cm laterals having an approximate depth of 1 m and spacing of 14 m, resulting in a drainage intensity of 1.1 cm day-1 and drainage coefficient of 1 cm day-1. Drainage in the SE and NW plots was controlled at two different levels during some periods depending on the season, while the SW and NE were allowed to drain freely. This field has been in a corn-soybean rotation since 2011 and in continuous corn before that, and was managed using chisel-plow tillage in the fall and field cultivator tillage in the spring during the study period. Nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) fertilizers were applied at different rates prior to and after planting corn. Phosphorus was also applied prior to soybean planting in two of the three soybean years. The rate and timing of fertilizer applications were uniform for all plots and were based on Purdue Extension recommendations. More information about this site and fertilizer application can be found in Saadat et al., 2018.</p> <p><b>Sampling strategy and load calculation:</b> Automated water samplers (ISCO) were used to draw samples from the drainage outlet flow of each plot. Samples were collected every hour when flow was present except during winter, and combined into weekly composite samples varying in length from twice a week to biweekly. During the winter, water samples were collected manually to avoid freezing problems, approximately every week whenever flow was present. Samples were kept frozen until analysis and then analyzed on a SEAL Analytical AQ2 auto-analyzer to be tested for nitrate+nitrite-N (referred to nitrate-N), soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) and total phosphorus (TP) according to US EPA methods.</p> <p>Daily nitrate-N, SRP and TP concentration values needed for the load calculations were estimated using linear interpolation. A Comparison of Principals’ and Teachers’ Scores on the Leadership Practices Inventory and The Purdue Teacher Opinionaire

Most research indicates that effective principals usually involve teachers in some of the decision-making processes that take place in a school. When teachers feel they have a voice in decisions, they are more likely to take ownership in their school. Great leaders have the power to change their school either for the advancement of the establishment, or they can bring about negativity in the workplace. The purpose of this study was to determine if there were differences on the 5 dimensions of the Kouzes-Posner Leadership Practices Inventory (Model the Way, Inspire a Shared Vision, Challenge the Process, Enable Others to Act, and Encourage the Heart) between teachers’ scores and their principal’s score for participants in this study, and to determine if a relationship existed between teachers’ scores on the Purdue Teacher Opinionaire and their principal’s Leadership Practices Inventory score. For this research data were collected from 10 schools in a school system in East Tennessee that contained kindergarten through eighth grade. These schools are classified in 3 categories: kindergarten through eighth grade, third through fifth grade, or sixth through eighth grade. There were 208 participating teachers in the school system who teach kindergarten through eighth grade. One-sample t-tests were used to compare the principal’s Leadership Practice Inventory score to teachers’ Leadership Practice Inventory scores at each of the 10 participating schools. Scores for teachers and their principal were not significantly different for any of the 5 dimensions for Schools 1, 2, 9, and 10. School 8 displayed a significant difference for 3 of the 5 dimensions. The means were significantly different for Schools 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 on all 5 of the dimensions. The relationship as measured by Pearson correlation coefficients between the Leadership Practices Inventory and the Purdue Teacher Opinionaire for teachers at the 10 participating schools displayed similar mixed results.

At the practical clinic, many diagnoses, preventions and treatments are established with the use of tests or measuring instruments. Instruments and tests that cover the motor developing aspects of manual coordination ability are even harder to find on the Brazilian children s norms and are important to notice the motor coordination issues that may affect their ability to take care of themselves, social activities and school performance. This study intended to find validation evidences of three manual motor ability tests, Purdue Pegboard, Finger Tapping and Simple Reaction Time in 134 right-handed children of 5 and 6 years old from two schools based in São Paulo, one of which is a private school and the other one is a public school with different socioeconomic levels. The specific objectives were intended to compare the performance of the manual motor ability tests between sexes and ages of 5 and 6 years olds, and to verify whether there was a performance difference in the tests between the children from the public and private school. The results showed a significant correlation between the three tests helping to validate the theory. Regarding the specified objectives, it was observed that between all the manual motor ability, only on the Purdue Pegboard 3 and 4 sub-tests did the girls perform better than the boys; the older children achieved a better performance on the tests; and the manual motor ability tests performance doesn t depend on which type of school the children attend. / A escassez de dados normativos em instrumentos e testes específicos para a população brasileira é um desafio aos profissionais que propõem mensurar a efetividade de seu trabalho. Na prática clínica, muitos diagnósticos, assim como prevenções e tratamentos podem ser estabelecidos com o uso de testes ou instrumentos de mensuração. Instrumentos e testes que abrangem aspectos do desenvolvimento motor como habilidade motora manual são ainda mais difíceis de estarem disponíveis nas normas para crianças brasileiras. Estes são importantes para a detecção de problemas de coordenação motora, que podem influenciar nas atividades de auto-cuidado, nas atividades sociais e no desempenho escolar. Este estudo propôs buscar evidências de validação de três testes de habilidade motora manual, Purdue Pegboard, Finger Tapping e Tempo de Reação Simples em 134 crianças de cinco e seis anos de idade. Todas destras, de duas escolas paulistanas, sendo uma escola particular e outra pública, com níveis sócioeconômicos distintos. Como objetivos específicos, a pesquisa propôs comparar o desempenho dos testes de habilidade motora manual entre os sexos, e entre as idades de cinco e seis anos. Além de verificar se existe diferenças no desempenho dos testes entre os sujeitos da escola pública e particular. Os resultados apontaram correlações significantes entre os três testes, o que auxiliou no processo de validade da construção. Em relação aos objetivos específicos observamos que entre todos os testes de habilidade motora manual, apenas nos sub-testes 3 e 4 do Purdue Pegboard, as meninas tiveram melhor desempenho que os meninos, os sujeitos com maior idade obtiveram melhor desempenho nos testes e o desempenho dos testes de habilidade motora manual independe do tipo de escola que o sujeito freqüenta.

Prototyping a Well-Driver PUP (Purdue Utility Project) to Install Low-Cost Driven Water Wells

<p>People living in developing countries or undeveloped regions often do not have proper access to quantities of safe, clean water to fulfill their daily needs. Certain members of the families, often women and children, walk miles every day to collect surface waters that are frequently contaminated. To improve water availability and quality, a sustainable mechanical solution to more safely access groundwater has been developed.</p> <p> </p> <p>A well-driving attachment for a PUP (Purdue Utility Project) vehicle provides a low-cost means for installing driven type wells in areas of high to medium water table heights. PUP vehicles have a niche in developing countries, as they offer impressive value and utility in comparison to other powered machines. The vehicles are built and sourced using locally available materials with basic tooling. A hydraulic post driver has been attached to the rear of a PUP frame to serve as an impact mechanism, driving a well point and a series of inter-connecting pipes to serve as a permanent casing for the well. </p> <p> </p> <p>Water wells were tested at four different test sites around central Indiana, with the deepest well reaching 23 feet. This suggests that the Well-Driver PUP can install driven water wells in areas of medium to high water tables and may be suitable for a development setting. Water wells can be installed on a communal basis, thus providing an increased level of hygiene and standards of living. Low-cost driven water wells will provide a drinking water supply that is better protected than a hand-dug well and will reduce the likelihood of disease caused by waterborne pathogens. Development of the Well-Driver PUP prototype and its applications will be discussed.</p>

The purpose of this creative project was to develop a program on video tape that would briefly explain the local Cooperative Extension Office, the programs and the assistance available. Audio-visual material available prior to this consisted of one slide tape set approximately 10 years old. In the new video tape a short history of Extension, and an overview of each area of the local Extension Office are explained, using examples of how the local Extension Agents provide assistance to the community. The disciplines include 4-H, Agriculture, Family and Consumer Sciences and Community Development.Development of the video tape included planning, script writing, filming, editing and documentation of the project. The major task was to present the best, most informative material explaining the role of Extension with-out being long and boring. By showing preliminary tapes to control groups and making changes as suggested. A final format was established that should most effectively explain the Extension Office and its services.

Leadership Behaviors in High School Principals: Traits and Actions That Affect Morale.

This study examines the relationship between principal leadership practices and teacher morale. A sample of ten public secondary schools, with a total of 664 teachers and ten principals, participated in this study. The Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI)(Kouzes and Posner, 2002) was used to gather information regarding the principals' leadership behaviors. Teacher morale was measured by using the Purdue Teacher Opinionaire (PTO)(Bentley & Rempel, 1968). The PTO provides a total score as a single measure of the general level of teacher morale while also providing ten subscale scores on different dimensions of teacher morale. Demographic data was gathered through the Tennessee State Department of Education website and through personal interviews with school officials. Research questions explored teachers' overall level of morale, self-perceived and observer-perceived leadership practices of the principal, differences in teacher morale between less experienced and more experienced teachers, the specific leadership behaviors affecting teacher morale, and organizational and structural dimensions of each school that may impact teacher morale. Results showed that teachers who participated in this study exhibited a moderately high degree of teacher morale. The principals who took part in this study exhibited a higher rating in self-perceived leadership practices than the level found in existing research. Principals in this study also indicated that they engaged in the identified leadership practices more frequently than their teachers' perceptions of their behavior. There were significant differences between teachers with five or fewer years of teaching experience and those with more than five years experience. In measuring the relationship between leadership practices and teacher morale, a positive correlation was revealed pertaining to each of the five factors. In the analysis of school demographic characteristics and teacher morale, it was revealed that there was a relatively strong, positive relationship between teacher morale and Act scores as well as student matriculation to college. Recommendations for future research are presented.
