O presente trabalho tem o objetivo de apresentar, descrever e explicar fatores determinantes na constituição dos nomes dos nove municípios que integram a Quarta Colônia de Imigração Italiana, situada na região central do Rio Grande do Sul, levando em consideração fatores históricos, questões políticas, de origem e identidade étnica, bem como aspectos culturais relevantes nessa comunidade formada por imigrantes, que, por longos anos, estiveram na busca de estabelecer-se em um novo ambiente. Os principais autores consultados foram Dauzat (1947), Rostaing (1948) e Dick (1990, 1992, 1996). Esta pesquisa de cunho qualitativo partiu da análise de informações documentais, no que diz respeito aos nomes próprios oficiais desses nove municípios. A metodologia utilizada baseou-se na análise do processo de formação e estruturação dos topônimos, assim como seu referente motivacional, através de fichas lexicográficas-toponímicas dos municípios em questão. A análise dos dados possibilitou uma melhor compreensão do passado dos imigrantes italianos que ali chegaram, assim como as relações políticas e sociais que se estabeleceram no período da colonização e que se manifestam nos sentidos subjacentes aos nomes denominativos das cidades. The main authors studied were Dauzat (1947), Rostaing (1948) and Dick (1990, 1992, 1996). Through this qualitative research a documentation analysis of the proper names of these nine cities was performed. The methodology used was based on an analysis of the formation process and structure of the toponymys, as well as their motivation by using lexicographic-toponymy cards of the nine cities names. The analysis of the data has enabled a better understanding of the history of the Italian immigrants who arrived in these region, as well as political and social relations that were established during the period of colonization and which manifested themselves in the act of assigning names to these cities. Through the knowledge arising from this study, it is expected to contribute to the rescue of the memory of those places and to the formation of citizenship.
