The Death of Cervantes' Don Quixote: Three Musical and Literary PerspectivesJanuary 2016 (has links)
abstract: Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra created the character of Don Quixote in his book El ingenioso hidalgo Don Quijote de la Mancha, published in 1605. Since its creation, stories from the book have been reimagined in art, in literature and in music. Frequently, Cervantes – the man and author – and Quixote – the novel’s protagonist and hero – have been inextricably linked in character. Subsequent adaptors of the novel have been influenced by this connection: composers Jules Massenet (1842-1912), Jacques Ibert (1890-1962) and Mitch Leigh (1928-2014) all wrote their own versions of the Quixote saga. Though their approaches to the story are varied, the basic characteristics of it remain: Love, Life and Dreams. Those themes are reflected in the old knight’s death scene in each of their respective works. Here, the lives of the adaptors are briefly discussed and a dramatic and musical (Schenkerian), analysis of Quixote’s last hours are presented. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Music 2016

Left Brain vs. Right Brain: An Analysis of Cervantes' Don QuixoteScimeca, Michael D 01 January 2016 (has links)
El ingenioso hidalgo Don Quixote de la Mancha sits at the crossroads of two defined Spanish early modern contexts, combining Renaissance ideals with Baroque elements into one Golden Age masterpiece. The theme of duality present throughout the work finds true expression in Cervantes’ well-educated protagonist, Alonso Quijano. In him, the reader glimpses the struggle between antiquity versus early modernity, ideality versus reality, instability versus sanity, and unhealthiness versus healthiness. These medical themes and the underlying sociocultural facets will be investigated by thoroughly evaluating Cervantes’ treatment of human consciousness. In doing so, this study aims to explore the following questions: to what extent does Cervantes present relevant medical knowledge applicable to the Renaissance and Baroque periods of Spanish history? How do these medical allusions and references influence the reader’s perception of Don Quixote as insane? Could/Would a medical diagnosis of some neurologically or psychologically based disorder be applied? Finally, to what extent of the protagonist’s behavior may be medically attributed and to what extent may be the result of sociocultural disconnection? Following an in-depth review of Spanish literature and medical knowledge, it will be necessary to examine the work for episodes in which Don Quixote experiences pronounced fatigue, forgetting spells, head trauma, sleep disturbances, and headaches. This psychoanalytical process of interpreting Spanish medicine through the lens of literature illuminates the scientific background inherent in the novel and establishes a foundation for uncovering the connections between medicine, culture, and literature in Golden Age Spain.

The novel Don Quixote de La Mancha, by the Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra (1547-1616), first published in 1605 (Volume 1) and 1615 (Volume 2), is acknowledged by many literary critics as the milestone of the modern novel, and its plot is known worldwide. The success of Don Quixote was foreboded by the own author, reported in the prologue of Volume 2. The interpretation of Don Quixote’s narrative over its four centuries of existence unveils multiple analysis, of which, among them, the romantic bias one is emphasized. In this dissertation we have approached a brief overview on the trajectory of the dissemination of the aforementioned novel, also regarding the novelist himself, as well as its diffusion throughout the world, growing into one of the most famous books in mankind. Its diffusion goes beyond literary boundaries, such as existing adaptations in several artistic fields like drama, cinema, music, painting, among others. We have emphasized one of its adaptations to children’s literature, made by the Brazilian authoress Ana Maria Machado, entitled O Cavaleiro do Sonho: as aventuras e desventuras de Dom Quixote de La Mancha (2005), which dialogues interartistically with painting, since its illustrations were taken from the series of paintings Dom Quixote (1956), by the Brazilian painter Candido Portinari. The bonding with the narrative also takes place via the field of orality, forming the Myth of Don Quixote. We have investigated Ana Maria Machado’s point of view concerning her adaptation of Cervantes’ diegesis by means of the myth. To this end, we have utilized an analytical perspective that makes use of Myth Criticism, Cervantic studies, Theory of Literature and Language Studies in order to substantiate the interdisciplinary element stressed by the authoress.

The present study try to analyse the images that the Spanish painter Salvador Dali accomplished to the Cervantes masterpiece, D. Quixote. The result is an illustrated book marked by one singularity: since its first edition, in 1945, new images were incorporated, allowing the editors total freedom to arrange them through the following publications, in a way that each edition, so far, is different from the previous one. With this singular artistic proposition, Dali subverts the conventions concerning the traditional process of book illustration. His approach to the literary production can be understood in a wider universe. This universe â?¿ the ut pictura poesis doctrine â?¿ is known as the humanistic theory of painting, comprehending the relations between poetry and painting, which, since the ancient times has been a concern of philosophers and art thinkers. By subverting the formal relations between image and text, Dali uncovers the ambiguity of renascence topic and allows the reader to compare the multiplicity of meanings of both languages / Doutorado / Educação, Conhecimento, Linguagem e Arte / Doutor em Educação

Tras un siglo de recepción cervantina en Brasil: estudios críticos sobre el Quijote (1900-2000) / The study of the critical reception of the Cervantes\' work in Brazil from 1900 to 2000Rodríguez, Marta Pérez 07 March 2008 (has links)
Dom Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes enjoyed a generous reception in the Brazilian context that was manifested in various spoken and artistic forms. The present work confines itself to the study of the critical reception of the work in Brazil from 1900 to 2000. The commemorative dates related to the work and its author provided privileged moments for the production of essays and critical studies published in book form or as news articles. Taking this fact into account, the starting date for the research is 1905, when the third centenary of the publication of the first part of the work was commemorated in the city of Rio de Janeiro. The aim of the work is to analyze the way in which such studies set about translating the form and content of the work, sometimes through images, other times by the defense of certain values, establishing in some cases connections between the life of the author and the literary work. Apart from the analytical consideration of the 16 analyzed texts, the work seeks to establish connections between them by means of a comparative critical exercise with emphasis on symbolic representation. The research undertaken led to the organization of a bibliographical archive based on the journalistic resources consulted and registered, which enabled the formulation of the first catalog of Cervantes\'s works produced in the country. This catalog is intended to facilitate future consultations and new research into the reception of the work in Brazil.

A study of Don Quixote preliminary verses and translation proposalGiselle Cristina Gonçalves Migliari 24 February 2012 (has links)
Not only has this work been devoted to an analytical study of the preliminary verses of El ingenioso hidalgo Don Quijote de La Mancha, written in 1605 by Miguel de Cervantes, but also a proposal of their translation attached in the end of this work. The research has taken into account different considerations about Cervants criticism. Most of them revealed how the author was worth being read as a writer and others highlighted his poems. As a consequence of the literary appreciation that had been brought up before this research, form and content are still permeating the ten introductory poems of the Manchegos narrative knight. Beyond this, burlesque elements in the verses will be referred as a way of showing relevant poetic concepts and, consequently, parameters established to support an innovative Portuguese version. It must be mentioned that the present translation is systematically based on rhyme and poetic interpretation.
