The demand for U.S. railroad freight service: selected manufactured goods

Master of Arts / Department of Economics / Michael W. Babcock / Many of the railroad demand studies are out-dated, lacking the most recent data. We felt that it is time to re-evaluate the rail markets to determine if changes have occurred in the determinants of railroad demand. This paper examines the effects of industrial production and revenue per ton of railroads on the demand for railroad service for selected manufactured goods. Also there appears to be a fundamental shift in railroad pricing after 2004. Thus a dummy variable for the 2005-2010 period was included in the model. Although there is variation in the price elasticity of demand across the manufactured goods markets, all are price inelastic.

(Marketing Management and Information Systems))--University of the Witwatersrand, Faculty of Commerce, Law and Management, School of Economic and Business Sciences, 2016. / It was realised that there are inefficiencies at Company X’s plant K shunting yard; service time was long and the idling time of the locomotives was long. Locomotives can be utilised for other purposes in the plant. This has implication in resource planning and productivity in the company. The study deals with the simulation of the Company X rail network in plant K. The focus is on how shunting and product transportation takes place. A background on the study is given, taking into consideration elements which have been included in the study. These include the locomotives and the Block Train Rail Tanker Cars (RTCs). These containers transport different products from Town L to Town M. The study focuses on the transportation of five products. The study also includes the domestic and international Product E trains arriving at the Product E loading and offloading zone. Simulation model which represents the current-state situation was developed, using SIMIO software package. The study examined how service speed during the process of loading and offloading of products in the plant can be improved. The study also focused on locomotives travelling speed and idling time. Conclusions and recommendations have been made on the model developed. The results obtained were also discussed and analysed. / DH2016

Esta dissertação de mestrado versa sobre as oficinas ferroviárias, adotando-se como caso de estudo as \"Officinas Companhia Mogyana\", da Companhia Mogiana de Estradas de Ferro e Navegação, estabelecidas em Campinas, São Paulo, no início do século XX. A discussão proposta insere-se no campo de estudo do patrimônio industrial e visa contribuir para o reconhecimento, a análise e, em última instância, a preservação de remanescentes da arquitetura ferroviária paulista. O recorte temporal adotado, entre os anos de 1897 e 1908, corresponde ao período de concepção das idéias, do projeto e da execução das oficinas, com a implantação gradual de suas diversas edificações, conformando no pátio ferroviário central de Campinas um verdadeiro complexo industrial destinado ao funcionamento daquela ferrovia. Utilizando fontes documentais diversas, buscou-se investigar as diretrizes internacionalmente difundidas à época para a construção de oficinas ferroviárias, bem como a reinterpretação dessas para a realidade brasileira. Por meio do estudo das \"Officinas Companhia Mogyana\", foi possível averiguar a repercussão desses preceitos na determinação da planta industrial estabelecida pela companhia, especificamente em relação às decisões projetuais e de partido. Além disso, utilizando-se de documentos institucionais da Mogiana, mormente os relatórios da diretoria, e de visitas de campo, buscou-se analisar as diversas edificações componentes do conjunto usina geradora, seção de locomotivas, seção de carros e vagões, fundição e rotunda sob a perspectiva de sua funcionalidade e operacionalidade, como também da técnica construtiva empregada, dos arranjos formais e composições estilísticas e das transformações por que passaram ao longo de sua existência. As discussões promovidas intentam vislumbrar outras possibilidades de estudo das edificações ferroviárias, entendendo-as também como complexo produtivo e, conseqüentemente, espaço de trabalho. / This dissertation is about railway workshops, based on a case study entitled \"Officinas Companhia Mogyana\" [Mogiana Railway Workshops] of the Mogiana Railway and Navigation Company, which was established in the city of Campinas, Brazil, in the early 20th century. This discussion is classified as a study in industrial heritage and is intended as a contribution toward the recognition, analysis and, most importantly, the preservation of what remains of the railway\'s architecture in the State of São Paulo, Brazil. The period of conception of the ideas, design and construction of the workshops, with the gradual implementation of its many different buildings, extended from 1897 to 1908, and created a veritable industrial complex at its central yards in Campinas, out of which the entire railway operated. Using several different documentary sources, the dissertation represents an investigation into guidelines that were internationally recognized during the period when the workshops were constructed, and also shows how these guidelines were adapted in terms of Brazilian reality. By studying the \"Officinas Companhia Mogyana\", it became possible to verify the repercussion of these standards in determining the industrial plant that the company built, specifically in relation to the decisions concerning the designs and concepts. In addition, based on institutional documents of the Mogiana Company itself, especially reports issued by the senior management, and field visits, the author seeks to analyze the various components of the complex such as the generator, the locomotive section, the freight and passenger cars section, the foundry and the roundhouse from the perspective of their functionality and operationality. The construction techniques used, the formal arrangements and stylistic compositions, and the changes implanted during its existence are also described. The resulting discussions bring up other possibilities for studying the railroad buildings, also seen as a production complex and, consequently, a workplace.

Entender uma faceta do desenvolvimento do setor ferroviário, essa é a proposta geral desse trabalho. A tese que guiou essa pesquisa, é que a eletrificação ferroviária era encarada por parte da engenharia ferroviária nacional como uma modernização do setor ferroviário, fundamental para garantir a sua viabilidade. A hipótese central é que essas propostas eram parte de uma ideologia sobre o que seria moderno e progressista e que estaria relacionada tanto com o contexto econômico da crise ferroviária, quanto com a posição histórica do capitalismo brasileiro, de via colonial. Para cumprir com esses objetivos, focou-se a análise nas publicações técnicas de engenheiros que tratavam da adoção da tração elétrica nas ferrovias. Os marcos históricos da pesquisa começam no ano de 1922, com a inauguração da eletrificação do primeiro trecho da CPEF, estende-se até a década de 1950, quando o modal rodoviário se torna hegemônico. Em síntese: (i) analisou-se o papel central ocupado pelas ferrovias no complexo agroexportador brasileiro, (ii) a crise ferroviária causada pelas contradições do próprio complexo agroexportador e, por fim, (iii) as propostas de eletrificação como uma modernização capaz de sanar essa crise, além de ser um fator de desenvolvimento econômico nacional. / Understanding a facet of the development of the rail sector, this is the general proposal of this work. The thesis that guided this research is that railway electrification was viewed by national railway engineering as a modernization of the railway sector, fundamental to ensuring its viability. The central hypothesis is that these proposals were part of an ideology about what would be modern and progressive and which would be related both to the economic context of the railway crisis and to the historical position of Brazilian capitalism. To meet these objectives, the focus was on the technical publications of engineers dealing with the adoption of electric traction on railroads. The historical milestones of the research began in the year 1922, with the inauguration of the electrification of the first stretch of the CPEF, extending until the 1950s, when the road modal became hegemonic. In summary: (i) the central role of railroads in the Brazilian agro-export complex was analyzed; (ii) the rail crisis caused by the contradictions of the agro-export complex itself; and (iii) the electrification proposals as a modernization capable of remedy this crisis, besides being a factor of national economic development.

Introdução - No período de agosto de 2009 a setembro de 2015, doze trabalhadores morreram atropelados por trem durante exercício do labor. Pelas análises dos acidentes realizadas pela empresa de transporte ferroviário de passageiros, todas as vítimas descumpriram os normas e os procedimentos de segurança. Para solucionar o problema, a empresa propôs que os trabalhadores atendam integralmente a todos os procedimentos e normas. Objetivos - Mediar o processo de análise do trabalho feito pelos próprios trabalhadores de uma empresa pública de transporte ferroviário de passageiros, de modo a compreender e desvelar situações críticas do cotidiano de trabalho dos operadores que podem estar relacionadas às causas dos atropelamentos de trabalhadores em via férrea. Método - Análise Coletiva do Trabalho - ACT, foram realizadas duas reuniões. Resultados - A organização do trabalho está baseada em princípios da administração científica de Taylor. Pela percepção dos maquinistas e dos técnicos de manutenção de superestrutura, eles são excluídos do processo de formulação do procedimentos, o que implica no distanciamento e na fragilização da confiança entre quem planeja e executa. Conclusão - O método da ACT permitiu desvelar as dimensões da dominação burocrática presente no cotidiano dos ferroviários. / Introduction - Between August 2009 and September 2015, twelve workers were killed by train during their work. From the analysis of the accidents carried out by the passenger rail company, all victims failed to comply with safety standards and procedures. To solve the problem, the company proposed that employees comply fully with all procedures and standards. Objectives - To mediate the process of analyzing the work done by the employees of a public railway transport company, in order to understand and uncover critical situations in the daily work of the operators that may be related to the causes of trampling of workers on the railroad . Method - Collective Labor Analysis, two meetings were held. Results - The organization of the work is based on principles of Taylor\'s scientific management. By the perception of the machinists and superstructure maintenance technicians, they are excluded from the process of formulating the procedures, which implies distancing and weakening trust between planners and executives. Conclusion - The ACT method allowed to reveal the dimensions of the bureaucratic domination present in the everyday life of the railway workers.

O presente trabalho tem como objeto de investigação as modificações ocorridas no complexo ferroviário na cidade de Campo Grande - MS, partindo da análise sobre o desenvolvimento da cidade associado com a chegada da Noroeste do Brasil - NOB, como parte de um processo de expansão do capitalismo e modernização do campo, entendendo sua urbanização como resultado disso. Em um segundo momento, foi realizada uma analise sobre a ferrovia enquanto referencial de memória coletiva e urbana, servindo assim como \"resistência\" dentro do processo de valorização do patrimônio. Por último, buscou-se entendimento do patrimônio ferroviário enquanto âncora no processo de valorização das cidades, como parte de um sistema de \"reestruturação\" do capitalismo na contemporaneidade. Desta forma, este trabalho constitui-se como uma reflexão sobre a relação entre a preservação patrimonial dos bens de uma extinta ferrovia frente ao processo de reinserção de antigos espaços nos novos contextos urbanos, apontando o quão contraditório é esta relação que muitas vezes utiliza-se do discurso do patrimônio para atrair e gerar valorização a estas antigas áreas / The present work aims to investigate the changes in the railway complex in the city of Campo Grande - MS, based on an analysis of the development of the city associated with the arrival of Noroeste do Brasil - NOB, as part of the process of capitalism expansion and the countryside modernization, understanding its urbanization as a result of this. In a second step, an analysis of the railroad as a reference of urban and collective memory was held, thus serving as \"resistance\" in the heritage valorization process. Finally, was sought to understand the railroad heritage while anchor in the cities valorization process, as part of a system of \"restructuring\" the contemporary capitalism. As a result, this work constitutes as a reflection regarding the relationship between heritage property preservation of a defunct railroad against the reintegration of old spaces in new urban contexts, pointing how pointing how contradictory is this relationship that often makes use of the speech of heritage to attract and generate the valorization of these old areas

Data integration in the rail domain

The exchange of information is crucial to the operation of railways; starting with the distribution of timetables, information must constantly be exchanged in any railway network. The slow evolution of the information environment within the rail industry has resulted in the existence of a diverse range of systems, only able to exchange information essential to railway operations. Were the cost of data integration reduced, then further cost reductions and improvements to customer service would follow as barriers to the adoption of other technologies are removed. The need for data integration has already been studied extensively and has been included in the UK industry's rail technical strategy however, despite it's identification as a key technique for improving integration, uptake of ontology remains limited. This thesis considers techniques to reduce barriers to the take up of ontology in the UK rail industry, and presents a case study in which these techniques are applied. Amongst the key barriers to uptake identified are a lack of software engineers with ontology experience, and the diverse information environment within the rail domain. Techniques to overcomes these barriers using software based tools are considered, and example tools produced which aid the overcoming of these barriers. The case study presented is of a degraded mode signalling system, drawing data from a range of diverse sources, integrated using an ontology. Tools created to improve data integration are employed in this commercial project, successfully combing signalling data with (simulated) train positioning data.
