Análise prospectiva da capacidade de processamento de cargas pela ferrovia no porto de Santos / Prospective analyses of the railroad capacity of load processing in the Port of Santos.

Ramos, Giselle de Moraes 26 May 2003 (has links)
This research presents a prospective analysis of the railroad operation in the Baixada Santista, considering the currently available infrastructure, the effective operational characteristics and possible future scenarios for a better exploitation of the railroad alternative. The proposed method consisted of the characterization of the railroad operation, identification of the intervening variables and data collection and analysis. The simulation software ARENA was used to construct a representative model of the railroad operation and was validated for current operating conditions. Five alternative scenes were generated considering changes in the railroad operation and increases in the demand of trains per day. The analysis of the results shows that the alterations in the operational configuration in some of the scenes are feasible and the system answers in a satisfactory way. Increments in demand are also feasible up to a certain level where the capacity of some resources compromises the operation of the system.

Minimization of overall person delay at light rail transit crossings on congested urban arterials

Unknown Date (has links)
This study describes analytical model as one innovative way to simulate Light Rail Transit (LRT) operations and calculate vehicular, transit and person delays at LRT crossings through Microsoft Excel. Analytical model emulates LRT trajectories from field and use these trajectories to clearly define train and car phases through Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) logic, which is part of analytical model. Simulation of train trajectories and calculations of delays were done for different LRT strategies and estimated roadway condition, Testing and validation of analytical model were performed in one case study in Salt Lake City (UT). Results show that analytical model is capable of emulating LRT trajectories and estimating delay at isolated LRT crossing. However, analytical model is not capable of simulating different train strategies at two or more LRT crossings, at the same time. Finally, extracted strategy provides savings from $100.000 to $200.000 in study area, on annual basis for projected year. / by Nikola Mitrovic. / Thesis (M.S.C.S.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2011. / Includes bibliography. / Electronic reproduction.

Cezar, Brida Emanoele Spohn January 2018 (has links)
This dissertation is about the ethics of memory in its relation to research and city, where it affirms the aesthetics of tragedy. São Salvador and Salvador do Sul present themselves as space-time portraits of a landscape that has been shaken and redesigned incessantly, from the effects produced by the arrival and departure of the railroad. The intervention, which gathered together the old inhabitants of this community during the course conclusion paper of the researcher, offers clues to be mapped in the sense of overflow of the lines assembled during under-graduation and that were imploded and multiplied with this dissertation. A fold happens in the processes previously lived, whether when hearing the train in its updated intensities by local elderly people, whether when narrating the undelayable undoing of scenes of the research once witnessed. Fiction allows, all at once, distancing, moving and reinventing oneself before the elapsed past and not repeated anymore, except as remnant and unfinished trace. Writing proceeds and does that by managing diversions and ways of living unsuspected until then: the raw material on which it leans out is as ephemeral as itself. The ethics in question here is conducted by the inevitable temporariness of the outline of the city, to subsequently discuss the fugacity of the text and existence itself that comes to give way.

The material traces of these profound changes present a universal human value and the importance of its study and of its conservation need to be recognized. The preservation of the railroad villages shall be motivated by the fact that in these goods a cultural signification is recognized, its aesthetic and/ or historical value, also we can?t despise the symbolic, emotional, afective value, turning them worthy of measures to be tutorshiped for the coming generations. Still, the worries in preserving the railroad villages as historical heritage can be enhanced by the inventory processes, taking in account not only its historical and architectonic value, but also the urban action that turns possible the maintainance of the current residents in the residential complexes. Inside this context, an example is the Companhia Paulista de Estradas de Ferro oppened in Campinas, S?o Paulo state, Brazil, on August, 11, 1872. The purpose was to build a railroad between the cities of S?o Paulo and Campinas. The company built throughout its existence a total of 1,612 houses along its tracks and main railroad junctions. Among the railroad villages built by the Companhia Paulista in Campinas, there is the village existing in the Ponte Preta district. During the last 80 years, the dwellings suffered countless interventions on the side of its residents, adapting them to several tastes and needs. The houses were steadily modified, with the substitution of several constructive components and even with the increase of the built area. In this thesis, we tried to know the changes that occurred in the Village. Still, in the initial phase of the research we noticed the deterioration of the houses, even with life risk of their residents. Thus, given the importance of the preservation of this railroad heritage through an inventory process and the imediate finantial getting for the restauration of the houses, with the aim that the residents may have conditions to continue to live in a safe manner, we applied for the openning of study of an inventory process of the railroad village Ponte Preta being the petition accepted by the Conselho de Defesa do Patrim?nio Art?stico e Cultural de Campinas (Condepacc). The investigations and results constitute the body of the present thesis/dissertation.

Therefore, it is necessary to contextualize the railroad in the historical development of the city, the recognition of railway cultural heritage by the community, and analysis the public politics for the protection of railway heritage in the city. At the end of the survey, after the theoric discussion and field research in the form of interviews with government and community, is possible to see the influence of the railroad to develop Irati. This influence is recognized by the people and the government, but there are no actions to preserve the railroad heritage. Being considered as a representative element of memory and identity of the local community, the railroad can be analyzed as a potential tourism product for the city, especially for the purpose of preservation and enhancement of heritage railways. However, before the railroad being used as a tourism product, it must be as an instrument of culture appreciation for the community to be an important benchmark of identity with the past.

Madalozzo, Nisiane 06 March 2015 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2017-07-21T18:15:19Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Nisiane Madalozzo.pdf: 17200821 bytes, checksum: 47a9691c9565aab4ab9bc2385f7f36f1 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2015-03-06 / Ponta Grossa is a Brazilian city that has historically had its development related to privileged geographic location. The railroad has been one of the historical events which contributed significantly for its urbanization. The railroad patio, unveiled in the transition from ninth to twentieth century, has defined the pattern of urban development, being influential to the perception of the local community as well, especially related to the cosmopolite idea of progress the city has been subjected to since then. However, with the further creation of a second railroad patio out of the central area and subsequent removal of rails, the old „railroad center‟ has lost its characteristics, with new built equipment and consequent different significations related. The main goal of this research is analyzing the current composition of the area first known as Ponta Grossa railroad center, from the signification of its built elements for the native society. The hypothesis put is that not all members of the community that live in the city are able to recognize and attribute importance to the railroad heritage of Ponta Grossa by experiencing the former patio. The document is divided in four chapters. In the first one, theoretical consideration is exposed. Especially the concepts of local and topofilia are studied, for being appropriate to the object studied. Then, both spatial and historical contextualizing are offered. Methodologically, there has been fragmentation of the studied object into ten different built elements, which are presented on the third chapter. Such decision has been important as to make data treatment viable, it being realized threw surveys and interviews with open answers. Representatives of different social groups have been included. In the forth chapter, the interviewing methods are presented, as are the results. As a conclusion, the methodology applied has proven adequate, allowing to comprehend the thoughts of people with different social profiles about the former railroad patio. The valuating of railroad historic elements has shown relative to specific social profiles, as expected; there has been, however, more recognizing of the importance of historical heritage than previously expected. It was also possible to identify that, through massive participation of the community on open-answer types of survey, a substantial array of conclusions is possible – that being thus considered as methodological contribution for the academy.

A distributed instrumentation system for the acquisition of rich, multi-dimensional datasets from railway vehicles

Stewart, Edward James Charles January 2012 (has links)
This thesis presents work carried out over a number of years within the field of railway vehicle instrumentation. The railway industry is currently moving to be more heavily “data driven”. This means that railway organisations are putting policies into place whereby decisions have to be justified based on recorded and citable data. To achieve this, the railway industry is increasingly turning to greater and greater levels of instrumentation to deliver the data on which to base these decisions. This thesis considers not only this increased requirement for data, but the frameworks and systems that must be put into place in order first to obtain it, and then to extract useful information from it. In particular the author considers the issue of contextualisation of data, where multiple datastreams may be used to provide context for, or allow more accurate and beneficial interpretation of each other in order to support better decision making. In order to obtain this data, the thesis explores, through a series of case studies, a number of options for different instrumentation system architectures. This culminates in the development of a distributed system of embedded processors arranged in an extensible modular framework to provide a rich, coherent and integrated dataset which can then be processed contextually to yield a better understanding of the railway system.

A generic fault detection and diagnosis approach for pneumatic and electric driven railway assets

Bai, Hao January 2010 (has links)
The railway assets studied in this project, are those widely distributed pieces of equipment that are critical to the dependable operation of the railway system. A failed asset is likely to cause significant delay to rail services, and may even place the system into an unsafe state. A generic fault detection and diagnosis (FDD) solution for a number of railway assets of different types is therefore desired. In this thesis, five assets, namely the pneumatic train door, point machine and train-stop, the electric point machine and the electro-hydraulic level crossing barrier, are considered as case studies. Based on their common dynamic characteristics, these assets are also known as Single Throw Mechanical Equipments (STMEs). A generic FDD method is proposed for these STMEs, which consists of sensor inputs and pre-processing, fault detection processes and fault diagnosis processes. A generic model, composed of a series of sub-models, is constructed to describe the behaviour of each asset. The results of fault detection approaches indicate that the proposed method has good performance and is generically applicable to the five assets. Two fault diagnosis methods using fault model and residual analysis are proposed and the fault model based fault diagnosis is preliminarily approached. Finally, a new three level architecture for railway condition monitoring is discussed for practical applications.

Development of semantic data models to support data interoperability in the rail industry

Tutcher, Jonathan January 2016 (has links)
Railways are large, complex systems that comprise many heterogeneous subsystems and parts. As the railway industry continues to enjoy increasing passenger and freight custom, ways of deriving greater value from the knowledge within these subsystems are increasingly sought. Interfaces to and between systems are rare, making data sharing and analysis difficult. Semantic data modelling provides a method of integrating data from disparate sources by encoding knowledge about a problem domain or world into machine-interpretable logic and using this knowledge to encode and infer data context and meaning. The uptake of this technique in the Semantic Web and Linked Data movements in recent years has provided a mature set of techniques and toolsets for designing and implementing ontologies and linked data applications. This thesis demonstrates ways in which semantic data models and OWL ontologies can be used to foster data exchange across the railway industry. It sets out a novel methodology for the creation of industrial semantic models, and presents a new set of railway domain ontologies to facilitate integration of infrastructure-centric railway data. Finally, the design and implementation of two prototype systems is described, each of which use the techniques and ontologies in solving a known problem.

Automation of railway switch and crossing inspection

Rusu, Marius Florin January 2017 (has links)
In recent years there has been an increase in railway usage which led to reduced time for rail maintenance. Railway switches and crossings (S&C) are an important asset and they typically account for 30% of the total budget spent on maintenance. The first part of this work researches the feasibility of automatically inspecting S&Cs in accordance with Network Rail inspection requirements and the likely necessary advancements. Current S&C inspection requirements, as well as current and developing inspection solutions, were analysed and categorised. This revealed the required technological advances and likely changes that the railway will have to adopt. The second part of the work researches the weakness of conventional S&C profile inspection practices used in industry. The work identified the main reasons that can lead to poor traditional inspection of the S&C profile, developed a novel, automatic method to carry out the profile measurements which eliminated human error and identified possible improvements in the area of S&C profile inspection. During this research, an inspection trolley was prototyped, field trials were carried out, and good results were obtained.
