Psykiatrivård och epilepsi i Sverige : Skildrat genom Ebba Ramsays epilepsisjukhus Vilhelmsro / Psychiatric care and epilepsy in Sweden as seen through the Ebba Ramsay Epileptic Hospital Vilhelmsro

Jörninge, Fridha January 2013 (has links)
The purpose of this essay was to investigate and compare the treatment of patients at Vilhelmsro’s hospital for children with epilepsy in Jönköping, Sweden, to the treatment of mentally deficient patients in Sweden during the 19th and 20th century. To fulfill the purpose of this investigation the administrative and medicinal archive at Jönköping’s county hospital Ryhov, and the provincial archives in Vadstena were used. The basis and the results of the investigation were drawn from studying and analyzing patient records, seizure books and enrollment charts of discharged patients, dated from 1928 to 1939. The investigation shows that although the treatment of patients at Vilhelmsro share a lot of fundamental values with the treatment of mentally deficient patients at mental institutions around Sweden at that time, such as correctness of behavior in order to fit into the norms of society, the hospital’s main concern was to educate and care for the children with epilepsy in hopes of adapting into society. This was not always possible, and the care at Vilhelmsro mainly had three outcomes which consisted of either being discharged due to recovery from illness, being discharged into the care of a more severe care facility or death from severe seizures. The hospital did concern itself with making sure that the children were molded into fitting into society’s interests and behavior and unfortunately this might have taken away from the actual medical care.

Transcendence Through Taste: The Relationship of the Preparation and Sharing of Meals to the Perfection of Human Nature as Evidenced by Literature

Reisenwitz, Erica January 2008 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Mary J. Hughes / Thesis advisor: Brian J. Braman / Drawing different people with unique tastes into relationships with one another, the dinner table acts as an anchor for the human community. Though a daily practice for most, can we mark one meal as being more significant, or more influential, or more artistic than another? While we may not consciously realize the forces at work while attending a dinner ourselves, examining the retelling of the shared human experience with meals and meal preparation allow us to analyze more objectively the multi-faceted meanings behind the event. One way in which to do this is through examining the role that mealtime has played in literature. Virginia Woolf's novel, To the Lighthouse, Isak Dinesen's short story Babette's Feast, and Frances Osbourne's biography Lilla's Feast explore the unique human transformation present as their heroine hostesses go beyond simply feeding to truly cater to their guests. Although three very different narratives, the works share the same heart as their presentation of grandiose meals, creative spirit, mystical energy, and ultimate human transcendence express the unique power each hostess has to create warmth in even the coldest of homes.Yet, what about each hostess' artistic, culinary masterpieces, their mode of self-expression, allow those who partake in their creations to better themselves? Can the meal, like art, do anything for the soul? Our psyches can be affected by the ritual act of dining. Through reflection on the communal culinary experience, as presented to us in ready-to-analyze literature, we may almost spiritually experience the art and its encouragement of the perfectibility of our own human natures. / Thesis (BA) — Boston College, 2008. / Submitted to: Boston College. Study on Ramsay Fuzzy Neural Networks

Wu, Tzung-Han 23 June 2008 (has links)
In this thesis, M-estimators with Ramsay¡¦s function used in robust regression theory for linear parametric regression problems will be generalized to nonparametric Ramsay fuzzy neural networks (RFNNs) for nonlinear regression problems. Emphasis is put particularly on the robustness against outliers. This provides alternative learning machines when faced with general nonlinear learning problems. Simple weight updating rules based on incremental gradient descent and iteratively reweighted least squares (IRLS) will be derived. Some numerical examples will be provided to compare the robustness against outliers for usual fuzzy neural networks (FNNs) and the proposed RFNNs. Simulation results show that the RFNNs proposed in this thesis have good robustness against outliers.
