This study examined the moderating role of religiousness in relationship between homesickness and depression, alcohol use, and risky sexual behaviors in freshmen college students. Data were collected on 312 freshman (195 female, 117 male, mean age = 18 years). Religiousness was found to moderate the relationships between homesickness and depression and alcohol use; however, the moderation was dependent on the domain of religiousness measured. For the relationship between homesickness and depression, positive religious coping served as a protective factor, while organizational religiousness, private practices, and global religiousness functioned as risk factors. For the relationship between homesickness and alcohol use, private practices served as a protective factor, while personal religiousness was a risk factor. Religiousness had no impact on the relationship between homesickness and sexual behaviors. Results highlight the need for domain-specific religiousness measures, and for an increase in awareness of the role religiousness can play in an individual's adjustment to college. / Master of Science

This thesis examines religiosity in the U.S. military and at the U.S. Naval Academy. More specifically, this qualitative study briefly explores whether belief in and practice of religion affects the overall adjustment and experience of midshipmen at the U.S. Naval Academy. Data were collected through focus groups with first and second class midshipmen (seniors and juniors, respectively) in the Classes of 2006 and 2007. Content coding revealed current issues of tolerance, acceptance, diversity, and understanding between midshipmen with differing religious beliefs and the in-group/out-group phenomenon that occurs between the religious majority and minority of the institution. Research into minority and diversity issues are compared to focus group data about minority versus majority religious groups and beliefs. Focus group respondents did not uncover or suggest any serious or egregious affronts to religious tolerance. However, there is anecdotal evidence that biases and prejudices remain especially with regard to atypical or unusual groups. Respondents spoke of racism, homophobia, and specifically, intolerance towards religious minorities. The message of tolerance has not penetrated some emotional reactions and there exists undertones of intolerance regarding certain diversity issues. Recommendations include individual and group counseling and development of a structured diversity and acceptance education curriculum. / US Navy (USN) author.

The present study was designed to investigate the possible relationship between religiosity as cognitive variable and the occurrence and severity of nonpsychotic, reactive depression within the paradigm of cognitive theory. Religious orientation, religious belief content, and locus of control were investigated to assess their relationship to guilt tendencies and depression tendency. The basic cognitive elements of religiosity were used as predictor variables in multiple regression analyses of the criterion variables of guilt and depression tendencies. Pearson correlations were also performed to determine the strength of the relationships between religiosity variables and guilt and depression tendencies.
