Interviews were conducted with thirty-five Australian and North American women who were fertile, childless and aged between twenty-eight and forty-two. The goal was to investigate how childlessness was experienced and understood by women for whom childbearing was a “live” issue. A key area of concern was whether women described their childlessness as “chosen” and if so, whether that description was a good “fit” with everyday understandings of choice.
