A Lake Divided: Regional Shifts in Trophic Niche Structure of Lake Powell Fishes Corresponding to the Invasion of Quagga Mussels

Introduced species can become invasive and cause catastrophic alterations to the system they invade. Both zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) and quagga mussels (Dreissena bugensis) have caused significant ecosystem alterations wherever they have invaded. These Dreissena species have caused changes in water quality and biodiversity and have disrupted energy pathways which can have cascading effects on other trophic levels. Recently quagga mussels invaded Lake Powell, a reservoir located in the southwestern USA, creating the possibility of a trophic cascade that could alter energy flow in the reservoir and change the trophic niche structure of the fishes in the lake. However, due to Lake Powell’s large size, dynamic nature, and complex hydrological structure, the effects of quagga mussels on fish species is uncertain. To determine impacts of quagga mussels on Lake Powell fishes, we quantified trophic niches of five species of sport fish over three years (2017-2019) using stable isotopes of nitrogen, δ15N, and carbon, δ13C. We test the following hypothesis: quagga mussels will cause a shift in trophic niche in more pelagic fishes such that pelagic fishes decrease in trophic position and shift toward use of more littoral energy. In addition, we compare the trophic niche of these species with a previous study on the trophic niche of fish in Lake Powell prior to full colonization of the lake by quagga mussels (2014-2015). In general, fish in the southern region of the lake exhibited a trend of decreasing δ15N suggesting decreasing trophic position and an enrichment of δ13C indicating a littoral energy shift in some species. Fish in the northern region of the lake exhibited a slight increase in trophic position and a shift towards pelagic energy across the same time period. These shifts support the hypothesis with pelagic fish experiencing a trophic niche shift, in the direction predicted, but only in the southern region of Lake Powell. Additionally, this shift is not exclusive to pelagic fish, but happened in all five species. Sediment laden input from the Colorado River may offset the impact of quagga mussels in the northern region of the lake resulting in observed regional differences.

Real-time management of river systems by using a hydrodynamic model with optimisation

Thesis (MScEng (Civil Engineering))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In this research a Real-Time hydrodynamic optimisation model of the Orange-Fish-Sundays River (OFS) system which uses real-time data in order to forecast release hydrographs, is evaluated. The OFS system stretches over three catchment areas in the Eastern Cape namely Great Fish, Little Fish and Sundays Rivers. The OFS supplies water from the Orange River through a 800 km system of canals, tunnels, dams and rivers to registered water users in this area. In order to cope with increasing pressures on water saving, water demand, water quality and dam safety, the Department of Water Affairs implemented this Orange Fish Sundays-Real Time (OFS-RT) system to calculate the optimal water flow, by running customised Danish Hydraulic Institute (DHI) MIKE11 software. The system utilizes an optimisation module that evaluates the simulated outcome at seven water release structures (dams, weirs and tunnels). Then during the optimisation process performs more adjustments to reach the objectives of the system to obtain the forecast release hydrographs. This OFS-RT model aims at target based objectives, using: (i) Hydras real-time field data of dam water levels, river flows and water quality from the area sent to the control office main computer at four hourly intervals via SMS and (ii) abstractors weekly water requests. This system takes irrigation and domestic demand into account as well as water quality, evaporation, rainfall, dam levels, dam safety, instream flow requirements and tributary flow. In order to manage the water flows through the OFS system the OFS-RT model forecasts the release hydrographs and uploads the predictions to a website to smooth operational procedures. The target outcomes were tested and evaluated during this research and it was found that the OFS- RT model succeeded in delivering release forecasts for the seven control structures to manage the OFS system. This research proved that management of river systems by using a real-time hydrodynamic model with optimisation is a useful tool for the optimal utilisation of water resources. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die doel van hierdie navoring is die evaluering van „n intydse hidrodinamiese optimiseringsmodel van die Oranje-Vis-Sondagsrivier (OVS) stelsel wat intydse data ontvang en loslatings hidrograwe verskaf. Die OVS stelsel strek oor drie opvangsgebiede in die Oos-Kaap: naamlik die Groot Vis-, Klein Vis- en Sondagsriviere en voorsien water vanuit die Oranjerivier deur „n 800 km stelsel van kanale, tonnels, damme en riviere, aan geregistreerde waterverbruikers in die gebied. Ten einde te voldoen aan die eise van waterbesparings, stygende vraag na water, die verskaffing van goeie water gehalte en damveiligheid, het die Departement van Waterwese „n intydse rekenaar model (OVS-IT) geïmplimenteer om die optimale watervloei deur middel van die aangepaste MIKE11 sagteware van die Danish Hydraulic Institute (DHI) te bereken. Hierdie stelsel maak gebruik van „n optimisering module wat die gesimuleerde uitkomste van verstellings aan sewe waterloslatingstrukture evalueer. Die OVS se watervloei word beheer deur voorspelde loslatings hidrograwe, opgesom op „n webwerf wat die uitvoer prosedures aandui. Die intydse hidrodinamiese model met optimisering het volgens hierdie navorsing daarin geslaag om vir die beheer van die OVS stelsel, die loslatings van sewe beheerstrukture akkuraat te voorspel en bevind dat die model „n waardevolle instrument is vir die optimale bestuur van waterhulpbronne.

桃園縣之大園工業區係一專門容納具水污染之污染性工業區。本研究之目的在於針對 其污染的特性探討其對周圍鄰近土地使用產生的影響,包括影響程度及影響原因。 研究方法分為資料搜集及資料分析兩部份。資料搜集包括工業區引進工廠之類別、廢 水量與特性資料、工業區周圍水體之水質及附近農田之損害調查等。資料分析係指工 業區周圍水體水質受污染程度汲農田損害程度之分析,並以污染損害成本函數振示其 間的關係。 本研究共計六章,第一章為緒論,敘述研究動機、目的、方法及文獻回顧,第二章介 紹工業污染對土地使用的影響及以污染損害成于函數將此影響量化的理論,第三章為 大園工業區之現況分析,第四章為工業區周圍水體水質及農業生產環境之現況分析, 第五章為實質污染損害成本函數的推估,第六章為結論與建議。 研究結果顯示污染性工業區對鄰近土地使用具有不利影響,包括﹕(一)使周圍河川 喪失其原來所具有的水體功能;(二)使附近農田之生產受損,估計每公頃農田損失 58,613元。根據現況農田損失及污染物對水稻生產之劑量一應答關係,本研究 得到工業污染對農田損失之實質污染對農田損失之實質污染損害成于函數,以做為決 策者訂定環境政策的參考。

Phytoplankton community structure and water quality of Red River, Vietnam

This study aimed to describe the distribution and relative abundance of the phytoplankton obtained during the two seasons (rainy and dry seasons) from the Red river system. The water and phytoplankton samples were monthly collected during the year 2012 at four sampling stations along the Red River (Yen Bai, Vu Quang Hoa Binh,and Ha Noi) . Environmental variables (e.g. temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, suspended solids, conductivity, TDS, NO3­-N, NH4­-N, PO4-P, Total Phosphorus; and DOC) and phytoplankton (e.g. cell density and relative abundant species) were analyzed. Six phytoplankton classes were identified with the Bacillariophyceae dominating in the phytoplankton community. A distinct seasonal variation in phytoplankton structure was observed with high cells density in dry season and low values in rainy season. PCA (Principal Component Analysis) showed that suspended solid factor that governed the temporal and spatial distribution of phytoplankton structure in the Red River system. / Nghiên cứu này trình bày sự phân bố và độ phong phú tương đối của quần xã thực vật nổi vào mùa mưa và mùa khô trong hệ thống sông Hồng. Các mẫu nước và thực vật nổi được thu hàng tháng trong năm 2012 tại 4 điểm trên sông Hồng (Yên Bái, Vụ Quang, Hòa Bình và Hà Nội). Các thông số môi trường (nhiệt độ, lượng oxy hòa tan, pH, chất rắn lơ lửng, độ dẫn, TDS, NO3-N, NH4-N, PO4-P, T-P và DOC) và thực vật phù du (mật độ tế bào,độ phong phú tương đối ) đã được phân tích. Sáu lớph tảo được được xác định với tảo silíc chiếm ưu thế trong quần xã thực vật phù du. Sinh khối thực vật đạt giá trị cao vào mùa khô trong khi thấp vào mùa mưa. Phân tích hợp phần chính cho thấy yếu tố chất rắn lơ lửng đóng vai trò quan trọng việc xác định biến động thời gian và không gian cấu trúc quần xã thực vật nổi trong hệ thống sông Hồng.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of TVR formation and environmental variables on composition and spatial distribution of eggs and larvae, in dams cascade operating with free threshold and under the Run of River system. Fortnightly nocturnal samplings were carried out between October/2016 and January/2017, in four points of influence area of the Rio das Antas Energy Complex, Patos Lagoon ecoregion. The ichthyoplankton was collected with conical-cylindrical networks, in three sections of the river and by a light trap per point. The eggs were quantified, while larvae were identified using the sequence regression development technique, framed in larval periods (larval yolk, pre-flexion, flexion and post-flexion) and juvenile. Were collected 5,681 eggs, 2,124 larvae and 43 juveniles, belonging to 25 taxonomic groups. Small species, sedentary and without parental care (small characids) had the highest total abundance and density. Significant spatial differences were identified in egg and larval densities, as well in the stages of ontogenic development, influenced by flow, temperature, pH and dam-free river stretch. The higher density of upstream larvae and the greater species richness downstream of the complex, indicate disruption in the natural processes of drift and the displacement of many species in the upstream direction. Higher flow rates positively influenced the use of RDS as spawning sites. / Hidrelétricas que desviam o rio, além de fragmentar os ambientes aquáticos, reduzem drasticamente as descargas de fluxo hídrico nos Trechos de Vazão Reduzida (TVRs). O objetivo desse estudo foi avaliar a influência da formação de TVR’s e das variáveis ambientais na composição e a distribuição espacial de ovos e larvas, em um complexo de barragens em sequência, que operam com soleira livre e sistema de desvio do rio e soleira livre. Foram realizadas amostragens quinzenais noturnas entre outubro/2016 e janeiro/2017, em quatro pontos na área de influência do Complexo Energético Rio das Antas, ecorregião Lagoa dos Patos. O ictioplâncton foi coletado com redes cônico-cilindricas, em três secções do rio e por uma armadilha luminosa por ponto. Os ovos foram quantificados, enquanto as larvas foram identificadas através da técnica de sequência regressiva de desenvolvimento, enquadradas em períodos larval (larval vitelino, pré-flexão, flexão e pós-flexão) e juvenil. Foram coletados 5.681 ovos, 2.124 larvas e 43 juvenis, pertencentes a 25 grupos taxonômicos. Espécies de pequeno porte, sedentárias e sem cuidado parental (pequenos caracídeos) foram as maiores contribuintes para a abundância e densidade totais. Foram identificadas significativas diferenças espaciais nas densidades de ovos e larvas, bem como nos estágios de desenvolvimento ontogênico, influenciadas pela vazão, temperatura, transparência, pH e trecho de rio livre. A maior densidade de larvas à montante e a maior riqueza de espécies a jusante do complexo, indicam interrupção nos processos naturais de deriva e dispersão de muitas espécies no sentido montante. Maiores vazões influenciaram positivamente a utilização dos TVRs como sítios de desova.

The Effect of Aluminium Industry Effluents on Sediment Bacterial Communities

The goal of this project was to develop novel bacterial biomarkers for use in an industrial context. These biomarkers would be used to determine aluminium industry activity impact on a local ecosystem. Sediment bacterial communities of the Saguenay River are subjected to industrial effluent produced by industry in Jonquière, QC. In-situ responses of these communities to effluent exposure were measured and evaluated as potential biomarker candidates for exposure to past and present effluent discharge. Bacterial community structure and composition between control and affected sites were investigated. Differences observed between the communities were used as indicators of a response to industrial activity through exposure to effluent by-products. Diversity indices were not significantly different between sites with increased effluent exposure. However, differences were observed with the inclusion of algae and cyanobacteria. UniFrac analyses indicated that a control (NNB) and an affected site (Site 2) were more similar to one another with regard to community structure than either was to a medially affected site (Site 5) (Figure 2.4). We did not observe a signature of the microbial community structure that could be predicted with effluent exposure. Microbial community function in relation to bacterial mercury resistance (HgR) was also evaluated as a specific response to the mercury component present in sediments. Novel PCR primers and amplification conditions were developed to amplify merP, merT and merA genes belonging to the mer-operon which confers HgR (Table 5.6). To our knowledge, the roles of merP and merT have not been explored as possible tools to confirm the presence of the operon. HgR gene abundance in sediment microbial communities was significantly correlated (p < 0.05) to total mercury levels (Figure 3.4) but gene expression was not measurable. We could not solely attribute the release of Hg0 from sediments in bioreactor experiments to a biogenic origin. However, there was a 1000 fold difference in measured Hg0 release between control and affected sites suggesting that processes of natural remediation may be taking place at contaminated sites (Figure 3.7). Abundance measurements of HgR related genes represent a strong response target to the mercury immobilized in sediments. Biomarkers built on this response can be used by industry to measure long term effects of industrially derived mercury on local ecosystems. The abundance of mer-operon genes in affected sites indicates the presence of a thriving bacterial community harbouring HgR potential. These communities have the capacity to naturally remediate the sites they occupy. This remediation could be further investigated. Additional studies will be required to develop biomarkers that are more responsive to contemporary industrial activity such as those based on the integrative oxidative stress response.
