Risk-sensitive foraging in rufous hummingbirds (Selasphorus Rufus) : a test of the twin-threshold model

I tested the twin-threshold model, a risk-sensitive foraging model incorporating both a starvation threshold and a higher reproductive threshold. The model predicts risk-adverse foraging when an animal's energy state is close to the starvation threshold and risk-prone foraging when the animal's energy state is close to the reproductive threshold. Wild rufous hummingbirds (Selasphorus rufus) were presented with a choice of three artificial flower types that had either no, moderate or high variability around a common mean. I manipulated energy state by changing either the mean nectar volume or altering the cost of foraging (long versus short corollas). When the energy state of hummingbirds was close to the reproductive threshold they preferred the variable options. When the energy state of hummingbirds was close to the starvation threshold they preferred the nil option. Hummingbirds responded in a manner consistent with the twin-threshold model. / x, 90 leaves ; 29 cm.

Cellular immune responses of marsupials : family Macropodidae

This thesis describes a comprehensive study of the cellular responses of a number of endangered marsupial species with a principal focus on the tammar wallaby (Macropus eugenii) as a model macropod species. The development of in vitro experimental assays for the assessment of immune responses in this model species are described, which provided a set of benchmarks for comparisons with other members of the Macropodidae and with eutherian mammals. Once this data was collected and protocols were established, the study was extended to include investigations of the immune responses in opportunistic samples obtained from the Rufous Hare-wallaby (Lagorchestes hirsutus), the Long-footed potoroo ( Potorous longipes) and the more common, but nonetheless still vulnerable, Long-nosed potoroo (Potorous tridactylus) with a view to investigating their apparent susceptibility to infection with intracellular pathogens, particularly mycobacterial species. The findings from the application of these assays suggest that the cellular immune responses of these species are relatively complex and involve a level of sophistication that rivals their eutherian counterparts. Specifically peripheral blood and tissue leukocytes were morphologically similar to those of other mammals, with the exception of tammar wallaby monocytes that appeared to contain few lysosomal granules, and the basophils of the Rufous Hare-wallaby that contained very large atypical granules. The overall findings of this study suggest that the immune systems of macropod species possess most of the sophistication associated with that of eutherian mammals. Whilst some differences were apparent in cells and their products in the test species, no single factor common to all macropods was identified as a cause for immune dysfunction. It appears likely that as yet undefined factors related to their confinement rather than an inherent defect in their immunocapacity is responsible for the apparent disease susceptibility of these animals. / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Taxonomy of the Rufous-naped lark (Mirafra africana) complex based on song analysis

The Rufous-naped lark Mirafra africana complex consists of 22 subspecies spread across the African continent. Several of the subspecies have recently been suggested to potentially be treated as separate species. In this study a comparative analysis was done on the song from seven of the subspecies: M. a. africana, M. a. athi, M. a. grisescens, M. a. kabalii, M. a. nyikae, M. a. transvaalensis and M. a. tropicalis. The results showed that M. a. athi, M. a. kabalii and M. a. nyikae are all very divergent from each other as well as from the other four subspecies. In contrast, M. a. tropicalis, M. a. grisescens, M. a. africana and M. a. transvaalensis are not clearly separable from each other. Based on the results, I suggest that M. a. athi, M. a. kabalii and M. a. nyikae can be classified as separate species, with M. a. africana, M. a. tropicalis, M. a grisescens and M. a. transvaalensis forming a fourth species (M. africana sensu stricto). Finally, I conclude that this study shows that more studies need to be done on the subspecies of the Mirafra africana complex.
